(KUNA) -- A Spanish national wanted in connection with an alleged attempt to kill his country's king was arrested today in an armed swoop in Cambridge, southern England, police said Thursday.
A European arrest warrant was issued for Eneko Gogeaskoetxea Arronategui over an attempted assassination in 1997.
Scotland Yard and Cambridgeshire Police said they raided a property in the university city this morning following an "intelligence-led" operation.
Arronategui, 44, believed to be a member of Basque separatist group Eta, is due to appear before City of Westminster magistrates this afternoon for an extradition hearing.
Spanish authorities believe he attempted to assassinate King Juan Carlos in October 1997 before fleeing the country.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said his arrest warrant states he is wanted for a string of offences, including participation in an armed gang, attempted assassination of the king, terrorism resulting in death, possession of weapons and theft.
Counter-terror detectives supported by local officers were searching a home and two business addresses in Cambridge.

(KUNA) - The European Parliament (EP) Thursday adopted a resolution strongly opposing the reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen area. The influx of migrants and asylum seekers cannot justify them, said the resolution.
An EP statement noted that the Schengen system has recently come under pressure, with some EU countries considering the reintroduction of national border controls in the face of the sudden influx of migrants from North Africa. The current Schengen Borders Code provides for the possibility of reintroducing internal border controls "only where there is a serious threat to public policy or internal security," points out the resolution.
Under the current system, any decision to reintroduce border controls is taken unilaterally by EU Member States.
The EU Parliament, however, wants the new Schengen evaluation mechanism to be made into an EU system.

(KUNA) -- Leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament (EP) together with the EP President Jerzy Buzek Thursday approved a new Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
The Code sets out rules and principles which MEPs will need to follow in their contacts with outside interests and to avoid conflicts of interest, noted an EP statement.
The move comes after reports on a series of financial scandals involving a number of MEPs.
MEPs will now have to provide clear declarations of their paid activities outside Parliament and their remuneration, as well as of other functions which might constitute a conflict of interest.
The code also contains an explicit ban on receiving payments or other rewards in exchange for influencing parliamentary decisions.
There are clear rules on the acceptance of gifts and on the position of former MEPs working as lobbyists.

Its always more impressively "resonant" spoken through a rather large gallic nose. And then get Brussels to fill out the paperwork, and you're there. Get a German to do the wording and have some Brit initial it and send it on its way. Oh, and make sure Romania gets a copy. Address it to Druzhkolec Garbolishlick.... that whole family will want to know.

You don't need a code if you don't have the parliament. Corruption magnet.
