Justin's16th very special birthday (tissue alert)
[Daily Caller] Army First Lt. Jonathan Rozier gave his life for his country in 2003, leaving behind his wife and 8-month-old son, Justin.

Years later, Justin came to treasure anything that had belonged to his father, and he desperately wanted to own the same car his father had. CBS sent a reporter to show how a community came together to make that happen, despite his mother selling the car after Jonathan’s death.

Meet the G3 Battle Rifle (And It's a Legend for a Reason)
[The National Interest] In the late 1950s, the Bundeswehr, West Germany’s armed forces, needed a new infantry rifle. Part practical endeavor and part rebranding effort, the adoption of the G3 battle rifle was a symbolic establishment of the West German Army as an independent military force. The sturdy, beefy 7.62-millimeter rifle would serve nearly forty years, first on the Iron Curtain’s frontier and later as the first rifle of a reunified Germany.

The armed forces of West Germany were founded in 1955, ten years after the defeat of Nazi Germany. The breakdown of the wartime alliance between the United States, United Kingdom, France and Soviet Union divided Germany into two states, West Germany and East Germany, separated along ideological lines. The large number of Soviet conventional forces in Eastern Europe, particularly East Germany, could not be effectively countered without some form of West German remilitarization, and once established the Bundeswehr quickly evolved to become the backbone of NATO’s defense plan.

The West German army was originally supplied with surplus American small arms, including the M-1 Garand rifle . The Soviet deployment of the AK-47 assault rifle was an alarming development, sounding warning bells across a NATO that had largely neglected small arms after World War II. The AK-47 was chambered in 7.62x39-millimeter, capable of fully automatic fire and fed from a thirty-round box magazine, A Red Army unit equipped with the AK-47 could generate far more firepower than one equipped with the M-1 Garand. In the event of war, Bonn’s army‐and most NATO infantry, for that matter‐would be outgunned at the small unit level.

West German officials cast their eye to Spain, where the Spanish CETME rifle held great promise. Ironically, CETME had been developed by German engineers working in France and Spain after the war, engineers that had developed the wartime Sturmgewehr-45 (StG-45) assault rifle. The CETME resembled and used many of the features of the StG-45, including a delayed blowback operating system designed to reduce recoil. The Spanish weapon was chambered in 7.62-millimeter, at the time fast becoming the standard NATO rifle caliber, and utilized a twenty-round detachable magazine.

Federal judge rules Mass. law prohibiting secret audio recording of police, government officials is unconstitutional
[MASSLIVE] A federal court judge Monday ruled a Massachusetts General Law prohibiting the secret audio recording of police or government officials is unconstitutional.

Chief United States District Judge Patti B. Saris made the ruling on two similar cases -- one involving two Jamaica Plain residents who frequently record police officers and a second case involving Project Veritas, the undercover organization founded by conservative political activist James O'Keefe.

Land Rover makes dream come true for 87-year old ex-employee
[Auto Classics] Retired Land Rover employee Dorothy Peters was reunited with an early Series I that she worked on back in 1948 as a teenager, fulfilling a long-held dream.

Dorothy Peters is not your usual 87-year-old. Instead of yearning for reruns of Strictly Come Dancing and a flash of Monty Don during a Gardener’s World omnibus, Mrs Peters holds steadfast mechanical skills. Whereas most girls were expected to heed the cultural stereotype and remain home for remedial duties post-WWII, Dorothy instead went to work for Rover on a rather special project.

In July 1946, at the tender age of 15, Solihull-born Dorothy joined the service department in Rover’s Lode Lane factory. Working alongside a youthful team, the adolescents were instrumental in bringing the first Series Land Rovers to life. In particular, Dorothy worked on chassis #16 during off-road trials.

U.S. Sanctions Three N. Korean Officials over Human Rights
[AnNahar] The United States said Monday it was imposing sanctions on three senior North Korean officials over human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
abuses, despite President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's efforts to woo the regime into a denuclearization accord.

The sanctioned officials include Choe Ryong Hae, who has been considered a right-hand man to leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
.

The Treasury Department said it was taking action against "North Korea's reprehensible treatment" of its citizens in accordance with a 2016 US law that requires sanctions over rights abuses.

"The United States has consistently condemned the North Korean regime for its flagrant and egregious abuses of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and this administration will continue to take action against human rights abusers around the globe," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The orders -- announced on the UN-backed Human Rights Day -- include the seizure of any assets of the three officials in the United States and a ban on any US-based financial transactions with them.

Such restrictions may have little immediate impact on officials in one of the world's most closed countries but will have a clear symbolic impact as North Korea seeks greater acceptance by the United States.

Kim and Trump held a first-of-a-kind summit in June in Singapore as North Korea seeks a historic declaration of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Choe is one of the closest aides to Kim and has been described in the past as the effective number-two in controlling the military.

He is often trusted to conduct foreign policy or make high-profile announcements. At a major military parade last year, he warned that North Korea was ready to "beat down enemies with the power of nuclear justice."

The Treasury Department noted that Choe is head of the ruling Workers Party's Organization and Guidance Department, which enforces ideological discipline and ensures that all officials keep in line.

Another of the officials targeted is Jong Kyong Thaek, the minister of state security. According to a State Department report submitted to Congress, Jong directs censorship as well as human rights violations by the ministry, which is the regime's chief counterintelligence agency.

Satellite images which Ukraine say proves Russia is amassing its army on the borders, prompting fears of an invasion
[MAIL] Satellite images appearing to show hundreds of Russian tanks just 11 miles from the Ukrainian border have emerged ten days after President Petro Poroshenko warned that Moscow is scrambling its army on his doorstep.

The images were reportedly taken by Google Earth satellites last month, and shows the Russian military base in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, near Ukraine's eastern border.

Last month, President Poroshenko showed satellite images of the same base, which indicated that more tanks had arrived in recent months.

The new satellite images show around 250 T-62 battle tanks and around one thousand military trucks, artillery systems and tankers at the base, according to the Defence Blog.

'This is 18km from my border, this is the same warehouse where they have their ammunition, the same where they have multi-rocket launch systems, we should be prepared to protect my country,' Poroshenko told Sky News.

#1  GE imagery link found here.

Zooming out from Russian tank park will reveal Ukraine border (white line) 18.47 kilometers straight west.

The absence of HETs (Heavy Equipment Transports) likely indicates the armor arrived via rail line which is approx 1.7k to the west of the tank park. A permanent armored depot would likely have a rail spur running directly to it.

A cursory scan of the area did not reveal any tank gunnery ranges or other armor related training areas. Proximity to civilian housing also points to assembly area vs training area.

Barring a Barrett-Jackson armor auction, I'm labeling this a forward armor assembly area. There may well be others.

#2  Speaking from ignorance, but it seems to me if Ivan were serious, they'd have more capable tanks than T-62's lined up, given the AT weapons the Ukraine has likely picked up in the past few years.

France’s Macron vows to use ‘all means’ to restore calm
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] French President Emmanuel Macron is promising "all means" will be used to restore calm after the disruptive protests that have deeply shaken the nation.

On Monday night, Macron addressed La Belle France for the first time since anti-tax protests around the country turned into rioting in Gay Paree.

Trying to sound gentle and calming, Macron acknowledged "anger and indignation" among members of the public over the cost of living.

But he also said "no indulgence" would be given to people behind the protest violence.

He said "no anger justifies" attacking police or looting stores, saying both threaten La Belle France’s cherished liberty.

MINIMUM WAGE HIKES
Macron announced on Monday a 100-euro ($113) per month increase in the minimum wage from next year in a major concession to "yellow vest" protesters who have roiled the country.

The minimum wage was set at 1,498 euros per month pre-tax in 2018 and 1,185 euros after tax.

Macron also rolled back most of an unpopular increase in taxes on pensioners which was introduced by his government.

He stressed that the protests by mostly low-income people in small town or rural La Belle France were the result of long-term problems.

"Their distress doesn’t date from yesterday. We have ended up getting used to it," he said. "These are forty years of malaise that have come to the surface," he added.

President Trump to meet with Democrats on border wall, shutdown
WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ President Donald Trump and Democratic congressional leaders are seeking to avert a partial government shutdown amid a sharp dispute over Trump’s border wall and a lengthy to-do list that includes a major farm bill and a formal rebuke of Saudi Arabia for the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump is set to confer Tuesday at the White House with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer ahead of a Dec. 21 deadline to shut down a range of government agencies.

"Republicans still control the House, the Senate and the White House, and they have the power to keep government open," Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement Monday.

"Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown," the Democrats said, adding that Trump "knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement."

Republican congressional leaders have repeatedly said it’s up to Trump to cut a deal with Democrats, an acknowledgement of their own inability to produce spending bills with Republican votes alone.

That gives Democrats some momentum heading into the closed-door talks, which also could veer into Trump’s request for emergency funding for deadly wildfires in California and a Republican-sponsored bill to extend expiring tax breaks and delay some health-care taxes.

#3  Republicans should put out a bill putting military funding as a separate deal from all other budget matters and push it through while they still have a majority.

I'd also like to see something saying that when Washington is closed it is closed, back pay will not be made up as soon as it is opened, budget negotiations are not a paid holiday but I'd prefer to keep that separate to ensure the Military is not held hostage by budget fights.

Wish he would give us some relatable quants that plunk our ""magic twanger."

Iran said to arrest over 100 Christians in crackdown on conversions
[IsraelTimes] While the Islamic Theocratic Republic permits religious practice by its Christian minority, defection from Islam is a punishable offense.

Iranian authorities have reportedly placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
over 100 Christians in the past few days, as they seek to crackdown on conversions and what they claim is proselytizing by evangelicals.

Citing Open Doors UK, a charity that monitors persecution of Christians around the world, the Telegraph reported Monday that growing public interest in the minority faith, which makes up less than 1 percent ‐ or around 350,000 ‐ of the population, has worried the Islamic regime, leading to to crackdowns on churches and congregants.

While the existing Christian minority is accepted by Iran’s rulers, conversion from Islam is a punishable offense.

"This spike in arrests is highly concerning," Zoe Smith, head of advocacy at Open Doors, told the paper. "It follows an established trend of the Iranian government: as the number of converts to Christianity increase, so the authorities place greater restrictions on churches.

"The restrictions are worse for churches seen to be attended by Christians who have converted from Islam. Not only that, but the government is asking unreasonably high bail amounts and seeing longer prison terms for Christians."

She added that Church leaders are being "put under pressure to leave the country or face an arrest."

Rights groups such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesia Amnesty International have criticized Iran for its mistreatment of Christian converts, as well as other religious and ethnic minority groups.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lambasted Iran on several occasions for its treatment of Christians. In July he said Iran was torturing and jailing Christians in a "brutal" persecution campaign. Last Christmas he mocked Iran’s foreign minister for posting holiday greetings on Twitter.

"Saying ’Merry Christmas’ while jailing Christians in your own country is the height of hypocrisy," Netanyahu said.

Science & Technology
NASA’s Voyager 2 reaches interstellar space
[PRESSTV] NASA's Voyager 2 probe has left the protective bubble around the Sun and is flying through interstellar space, becoming the second human-made object to travel so far, the US space agency says.

The announcement came six years after its twin spacecraft, Voyager 1, broke the outer boundary of the heliopause, where the hot solar wind meets the cold, dense space between stars, known as the interstellar medium.

Voyager 2 is now more than 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers) from Earth, having passed the boundary on November 5.

"This time is even better for us," said Nicky Fox, director of the heliophysics division at NASA, noting that one instrument, called the Plasma Science Experiment (PLS), is still functioning on Voyager 2.

"To have the Voyagers sending back information about the edge of the Sun's influence gives us an unprecedented glimpse of truly uncharted territory."

The same instrument on Voyager 1 stopped working in 1980.

The two spacecraft, which look like a combination of a satellite dish and an old television set with rabbit ear antennas, were launched in 1977 on a mission to explore planets in our solar system.

The twin probes have left the heliosphere, but have not yet left the solar system, "and won't be leaving anytime soon," NASA said in a statement.

"The boundary of the solar system is considered to be beyond the outer edge of the Oort Cloud, a collection of small objects that are still under the influence of the Sun's gravity."

NASA says it will take about 300 years for Voyager 2 to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, and possibly 30,000 years to fly beyond it.

"We're looking forward to what we'll be able to learn from having both probes outside the heliopause," said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,.

Voyager 2 is officially NASA's longest-running mission.

The two spacecraft were designed to last five years and study Jupiter and Saturn.

"Both spacecraft are very healthy, if you consider them senior citizens," said Suzanne Dodd, director for the Interplanetary Network Directorate, as the science results were unveiled at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting in the US capital.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Is Europe Enabling Iran's Nuclear program?
[American Thinker] On August 6, 2018 President Trump announced the reimposition of nuclear-related sanctions on Iran following his announcement in May that the U.S. would withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal (aka the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA). These announcements were geared at precluding Iran from receiving funding from sanctions-free trade that it could use toward any secret nuclear weapons-related work. However, Europe, led by Germany and France, is attempting to rescue Iran’s flailing economy by bypassing U.S. sanctions.

The Iran nuclear deal was based on a lie. It was claimed that the deal would allow Iran substantial sanctions relief, and in return delay Iran’s development of nuclear weapons. This lie was promoted by many world leaders, nations, and organizations, and culminated in the 2015 signing of the JCPOA.

It was not until President Trump became leader of the free world that the United States stopped enabling Iran’s nuclear ambitions and made it clear that anyone seeking to continue doing business with Iran would face sanctions. The sanctions were reinstated on some sectors of the Iranian economy on August 7, 2018 and the remaining ones went into effect on November 5.

President Trump explained the importance of sanctions, stating:

The money reportedly went right to the colleges, not to the students, with $32,000 going to Virginia State University for an undisclosed number of students.

The fund, administered by the singer’s mother, Gloria Carter, took in $742,118 in 2018, most of which came from Jay-Z himself.

The charity claims it tries to help needy students, but it also charges the students $200 each to participate in the program and only 32 students signed up last year.

#1  GI Bill in one form or another still exits. That, of course, requires the applicant to do the work up front before collecting.
