Alaska Ports Benefit from Climate Warming
A historic Alaska gold-mining city could be the first place where the federal government invests in a deep-water port to serve vessels in Arctic waters.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing to release a study for public comment that suggests expanding the Port of Nome as a first step in improving infrastructure along Alaska's west and north coast.
More investment in Alaska, since the Bridge to Nowhere went ... nowhere.
The lack of a deep-water port along Alaska's north and west coasts has been a point of concern as climate warming has made Arctic waters more accessible. As ship traffic has increased, the Corps, the Coast Guard and other federal agencies have expressed concern about responding to vessels in distress, industrial activities and oil spills.
Year-round, ice-free access will also lead to more vessels in distress, industrial activities and oil spills.
Wimmin and minorities affected most?

#1  Good news for the Board of Trade Saloon and others on Front Street. Barge service more often to Nome will cut costs of liquor and beer to the saloons. Unfortunately, the retail price will remain the same.

Body of 'yanqui comandante' could soon be returned from Cuba
[Daily Mail] Remains of American who fought with Castro then tried to oust him - only to be brutally executed in Cuba - could be returned to his wife in Ohio after more than five decades.

A five-decade struggle to retrieve the body of a controversial 'yanqui comandante' (Yankee commander) who was executed for plotting to overthrow Fidel Castro after helping put him in power could finally be near and end.

With diplomatic relations softening between the US and Cuba, the family of William Morgan say things are 'looking good' to have his remains returned.

'My lawyer went to Rome and got a letter to Pope Francis, asking him to help, and it looks like the pope is going to do it,' Morgan's widow, Olga Goodwin, told reporters from her Ohio home.
Two possibilities: Morgan was a victim of an overnight U.S. policy change or, his usefulness to the fledgling communist gov't had run it's course.

#1  Morgan was a victim of an overnight U.S. policy change or, his usefulness to the fledgling communist gov't had run it's course.

Morgan was a victim of a very effective deception campaign carried out by Fidel Castro and Che. Even the Communist Party of Cuba declared itself pro-Batista and anti-Castro. Many Americans were taken in and helped Fidel fight Batista.

I was only after the Revolution that Fidel welcomed the Cuban Communist Party and revealed his true beliefs.

The other Yankees got out of Cuba as fast as they could. Morgan, however, was arrested and executed on Che's personal instructions.

The is a photo of Che Guevara, William Morgan and several American "guerrilleros" (including Ron Brown of Soldier of Fortune) clowning around in front of the camera. Given what the future held for all of them, it is a very ironic picture.

Pro-Russian rebels say agree to withdraw weapons in east Ukraine
[Hurriyet Daily News] A senior pro-Russian rebel commander said separatist forces were due to begin withdrawing heavy weapons from the front line in east Ukraine on Feb. 22, a sign rebels may be prepared to halt their advance as part of an internationally brokered peace deal.

Fighting has eased in many areas since a ceasefire came into effect a week ago, but the truce was shaken by the rebel capture on Wednesday of the town of Debaltseve, forcing a retreat by thousands of Ukrainian troops.

But moves towards pulling back heavy weapons, together with the exchange of dozens of prisoners with Ukrainian government forces on Saturday, could indicate the rebels intend to observe the truce more fully, having achieved a key military objective by seizing Debaltseve.

"The plan was signed last night ... Starting from today there are two weeks to withdraw heavy weapons," Interfax news agency quoted rebel commander Eduard Basurin as saying.

Russian news agency TASS quoted him as saying the pull-back was still being organised and that the actual withdrawal of weapons would take place from Tuesday.

Ukrainian military front man Andriy Lysenko said by telephone there was no confirmation yet as to whether the rebels had started pulling back their weapons.

Turkish teacher calling for anti-skirt 'harassment teams' removed from duty
[Hurriyet Daily News] The vice principal of a Turkish high school who raised eyebrows after suggesting the formation of "harassment teams" to prevent female students from wearing short skirts, has been relieved from administrative duty and reappointed to another school as a plain teacher, according to the Education Ministry.

"According to the preliminary report prepared by evaluating the information the students and teachers gave during the investigation, it was decided by the [Antalya] Governor's Office that the deputy principal of the Kepez Ataturk Anatolian High School, F.G., would be relieved from administrative duties and transferred to another school in the province," read the announcement issued by the Education Ministry on Feb. 21.

Antalya Deputy Gov. Huseyin Ece said F.G. was appointed to the Konyaalti Anatolian High School as a German teacher.

At a meeting with class presidents on Feb. 9 concerning school uniforms, F.G. reportedly suggested that "male students could follow girls who wear short skirts to make them feel uncomfortable, after which the students would eventually have to dress 'properly.'"

The subject was raised during a teachers' meeting at the school on Feb. 10 after a number of class presidents told other teachers about the vice principal's remarks.

According to the record of the meeting, F.G. admitted making the suggestion and again defended it. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
F.G. has since refuted suggesting such a plan.

"Everything I discussed with my students is private. We don't tell others what we discuss at the meetings. I hold meetings with the class presidents every day. We talk about everything, including the classroom layout and cleaning. We discussed what should be discussed. I don't understand where [the claims] have come from," F.G. said.

Ex-Maldives president held on terror charges, clashes erupt
[ARABNEWS] Police in the Maldives Sunday incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
former President Mohammed Nasheed under an anti-terror law for the alleged illegal detention of a judge when he was in power more than three years ago.

Nasheed, the country's first democratically-elected president, was taken into custody in the capital island of Male, police said.

The court said he might flee the country to avoid hearings on terrorism charges, which led to festivities between his supporters and authorities. Nasheed, Maldives' first democratically elected president, had been facing criminal charges over his order to arrest a top judge in January 2011.

Nasheed stepped down in early 2012, saying he had been tossed in a coup.

Last week the prosecutor-general withdrew the original charges against Nasheed, but issued an arrest warrant on Sunday under new charges of terrorism relating to the same incident of the arrest of the judge four years ago. The first hearing will be on Monday.

Military light vehicle market set to explode, says Forecast International
[Military and Aerospace] NEWTOWN, Conn., 23 Feb. 2015. International demand for light wheeled military vehicles is set for explosive growth, fueled by the U.S. military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program and its associated vetronics, predict analysts at market researcher Forecast International in Newtown, Conn.

The international light wheeled vehicle market will produce more than 36,000 units worth at least $30.9 billion through 2024 -- despite the ongoing worldwide economic crisis, Forecast International analysts predict.
