Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief April 4, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • HAND GRENADE BLAST IN KABUL’S KHAIR KHANA REPORTED – No casualties have been reported so far but Police confirmed that a hand grenade was detonated at an unidentified location in the neighborhood on Monday. Some home searches have been reported in the area and the Taliban have stationed additional vehicles at many of the checkpoints after the clashes that were reported on Sunday. We are still waiting for information regarding the clashes but nothing has been released as of yet. A source in Kabul has said that Taliban leaders have been warning staff in the Ministries of Defense and the Interior to minimize discussions about operations against ISIS-K with the press over concerns it is having a negative impact on the regime’s efforts to gain regional and/or international recognition.

  • RUSSIA AND TAJIKISTAN CONDUCT MILITARY EXERCISES NEAR AFGHANISTAN BORDER – In what may be a ‘demonstration of force’ Russia and Tajikistan began military training exercises at the Kharbmaydon training facility. The facility is located about 20 kilometers from the Afghanistan border. The stated purpose of the training is to practice combined operations focused on eliminating ‘outlaw gangs’ intruding into the territory of an allied state and also exercising command and control to block/destroy illegal armed formations. Taking part in the training are electronic mobile warfare groups, armored units, artillery units, radiation/chemical/biological units, and motor rifle units. Troop participation from both countries is estimated at approximately 700-1000 troops. The exercise comes on the heels of a joint statement from Russia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), last Friday, which specifically highlighted security threats that could come from Afghanistan. In conjunction with the military exercises, the Deputy Chief of the CSTO, Takhir Khairulloyev, visited the border with both Tajik and Russian military commanders to assess security requirements along the border. The exercises are scheduled to conclude on 7 April.

  • RECENT ISIS-K ARREST POINTS TO A TAJIK NATIONAL AS THE SUICIDE BOMBER RESPONSIBLE FOR BALKH GOVERNOR’S DEATH – The Taliban GDI continues to release more information concerning the arrest of Aynuddin Mohammad. Results of interrogations appear to have resulted in more information about the operation to kill the former Governor of Balkh. Aynuddin admitted that ISIS-K had used a Tajik citizen in the attack. This information raises many questions about security at Taliban facilities and the ability of non-Afghans to enter sensitive areas. There are rumors that ISIS-K had inside assistance from the Taliban to pull off the bombing but nothing has been confirmed. It is possible that an insider could have facilitated the bomber’s entrance to the Governor’s personal offices.

  • JOURNALISTS MUST REGISTER WITH THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND CULTURE – A spokesman for the Ministry announced that all journalists will be forced to register if they want to continue their journalism careers. After registration and a ‘reliability assessment’, they will receive a press credential card. Only registered journalists will be authorized to report on news within the country. The spokesman did not specify what punishments might be imposed on those who fail to comply.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Balkh: A Taliban night raid was reported in the Shahi district of the province. The target was a suspected ISIS-K hideout.
Nimruz: Late reporting says a Taliban security operation was in progress in Police District 3 of Zaranj. Details are conflicting, with one report stating that an ISIS-K hideout has been raided and another report suggesting an inter-Taliban disagreement had occurred,

NEXT 24 HOURS
SEARCHES IN KABUL LIKELY TO CONTINUE – A source in Kabul has said that the GDI has received a virtual treasure trove of information from the arrest of the ISIS-K mastermind behind several attacks in the North. ISIS-K locations, some vehicular information, and nearly 20 identities of ISIS operatives in Afghanistan have been gleaned from the interrogation process. With this information, at-risk Afghans are likely to see stepped-up security activities across Kabul and potentially in other cities. This information may have had something to do with the security activity in the Khair Khana neighborhood on Sunday and the deployment of GDI agents to Jalalabad that took place on Monday. More house searches are likely and the possibility of violence remains high.

Mogadishu Blast: Women Injured Amid Fiery ATMIS Convoy Chaos
[Garowe] At least three women were maimed in a kaboom that occurred on Monday at the KM4 intersection in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The medical department has confirmed the injuries, though the cause of the earth-shattering kaboom remains unknown.

The incident took place while a convoy of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Transitional Mission (ATMIS) was passing through the area. Photos and videos from the scene show that one of the ATMIS vehicles, specifically a supply transport, caught fire at the back.

A police officer, speaking to the media, said, "The women suffered minor injuries because of the car's flames that spread when fuel spilled from the car." The officer did not comment on the cause of the earth-shattering kaboom but emphasized that the police have initiated an investigation. The findings will be shared with the public once available.

No group has grabbed credit for the incident thus far. However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
it is worth noting that al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
has previously targeted convoys belonging to ATMIS forces and the soldiers of the federal government of Somalia.

This week, the ATMIS command celebrated its first anniversary since being renamed from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is set to conclude its mission in December 2024.
A witness says an explosion was heard on Monday at around 2:00 P.M. local time amid a traffic jam on the main streets that are prone to terror attacks.

Afterward, the AU soldiers fired randomly in all directions without knowing that the IEDs went off from inside their car. Several pedestrians were hurt in the indiscriminate gunfire.

Such incident is rare to happen within AU forces as they are facing the threat of Al-Shabaab, which bombs their bases and wage ambushes using IEDs on supply roads.

Al-Shabaab has stepped up attacks in Mogadishu a show of resurgence since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government launched an offensive against the group in August.

A US-born Trinidadian man was sentenced to 20 years for joining ISIS in Syria and aiding in financing the group
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Emraan Ali, 55, a US citizen born in Trinidad and Tobago, was sentenced to 20 years in a federal court in Florida last week. He plead guilty to ’conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization’ in November 2022, ABC News reports.

Ali, together with his son, Jihad Ali, 22, was arrested by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Baghouz, Deir ez-Zor, in March 2019, as ISIS staged its final stand. He was consequently placed under FBI custody and transferred to the US.

Ali had travelled to Syria in 2015 with his family in order to join ISIS. He received military and ideological training before being discharged and working in construction and trade for ISIS in its de-facto capital, Raqqa.

Ali also provided money remitting services to Trinidadian ISIS fighters in Syria, as well as donating his own money to the group, for which he is being tried in a US court. Ali’s son, who joined ISIS at age 15 and has admitted to having participated in combat, had previously been sentenced to five years.

On December 21, 2020, the High Court of Trinidad and Tobago also designated Ali pursuant its Anti-Terrorism Act.

The US has repatriated at least 27 Americans from Syria, 10 of whom have been charged with terrorism-related offenses.

IAF fighter jet downs drone flying over Gaza

Strip on Monday, the military said, adding that it had not represented a threat.

The army said that the drone "was identified in the skies over Gaza and was monitored the entire time by the air force until it was shot down.

"The craft did not cross into Israeli airspace and did not represent a threat at any time," the IDF said, without giving any further details.

This marks the second time in recent weeks that the IDF has downed a drone over Gaza. On March 22, Israel used an Iron Dome interceptor to bring down a similar craft.

The incident comes a day after Air Force combat helicopters and planes downed an unidentified aircraft that appeared to have crossed into Israeli airspace from Syria, which Hebrew media said was believed by the military to be of Iranian origin.

Around an hour after that incursion, Syrian media reported explosions at an airport near the capital Damascus, but did not blame Israel. Syrian state media generally is quick to attribute Arclight airstrike

IDF arrests 2 in Nablus suspected of attack on soldiers; 2 gunmen killed in firefight
[IsraelTimes] Troops exchange fire with gunnies in Paleostinian city; Ezz Touqan and Nidal Tabanjeh detained over drive-by shooting that injured 2 soldiers in March

Two Paleostinians suspected of carrying out a drive-by shooting attack on IDF soldiers in the town of Huwara in March were arrested by IDF forces in Nablus Monday morning, the army said.

Soldiers operating in the Northern West Bank city on Monday were met with gunfire and responded. In the exchange, two Paleostinian button men were killed, multiple media reports said.

The military said it confiscated the vehicle used in the March attack, as well as a weapon, ammunition and other "military equipment."

The two arrested men were identified by Paleostinian media as Ezz Touqan and Nidal Tabanjeh.

In a separate incident, IDF forces arrested an individual suspected of involvement in terrorist activity in the central West Bank village of Wadi Siman.

No IDF soldiers were maimed in either operation.

In late March two Israeli soldiers were maimed in a drive-by shooting attack in the northern West Bank town of Huwara. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the two soldiers were hit by gunfire while securing the Route 60 highway in the town, south of the West Bank city of Nablus.

Huwara has seen multiple Paleostinian shooting attacks on Israelis in recent weeks, as well as settler attacks on Paleostinians.

Hamas sentences 2 Gazans to death, 4 to hard labor over ‘collaboration’ with Israel
[IsraelTimes] One execution to be carried out by firing squad, other by gallows; accused remain unidentified, details of case not published

A military court in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip on Monday convicted six people of "collaboration" with Israel, sentencing two of them to death.

The court said in a statement that the death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
s would be carried out "one by firing squad and the other by hanging."

It added the four others were handed "life sentences with hard labor," which in Gaza amounts to 25 years.

Those convicted were not identified by officials in the Strip, which has been run by the terror group Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, since 2007, nor were details of their cases published.

Under Paleostinian law, a death sentence requires the approval of the president of the Paleostinian Authority which is headquartered in the West Bank.

But Hamas has repeatedly ignored this, and in September executed two Paleostinians for "collaboration" with Israel, as well as three others.

Those executions, condemned by the United Nations

The New York-based group Human Rights Watch decried the death penalty
at the time as "a barbaric practice that has no place in the modern world."

Gunfire hits homes on northern kibbutz, in suspected attack by West Bank terrorists

shows shots being fired at Israeli town in distance; army searching for button men

The IDF said Monday that it was responding to a shooting that targeted a northern Israeli town, with an offshoot of the Islamic Jihad terror group claiming responsibility for the attack.

There were no casualties and Israeli troops were scanning the area around Kibbutz Ma’ale Gilboa, where several homes incurred damage from bullets, the army said.

Footage published by the Islamic Jihad terror group appears to show assailants opening fire at the Israeli town, seemingly from the West Bank side of the Green Line.

The terror group claimed that the homes targeted are in Merav, a kibbutz in northern Israel that sits just inside the Green Line that separates Israel from the West Bank.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the IDF says shots were fired at neighboring Kibbutz Maale Gilboa.

The Emek HaMaayanot Regional Council said in a statement that the attack took place Monday afternoon and that the suspects fired from behind the West Bank security barrier.

Ma’ale Gilboa residents were immediately notified and ordered to stay in their homes. Later in the evening, they were given the all-clear.

While shooting attacks targeting Israelis take place periodically, they more frequently take place inside the Green Line and the decision to target Israeli civilians inside Israel proper is less common.

Earlier in the day, the Defense Ministry said that a Paleostinian man attempted to carry out a shooting attack at the nearby Gilboa crossing between the West Bank and Israel. The ministry said that the suspect arrived at the checkpoint wielding a gun. Security guards identified him and fired a warning shot in his direction. The suspect managed to flee the scene.

Two Syrian non-combatants were killed in an Israeli airstrike near Damascus early Tuesday, Syrian state media said.
well, they're non-combatants now
The incident was the fourth airstrike attributed to Israel to hit targets in Syria in less than a week, and came a day after the Israeli Air Force downed a suspected Iranian drone in Israeli airspace.

"At 00:15 the Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike... and the attack resulted in the death of two civilians," the Syrian state news agency SANA said, quoting a military source.

The report said the attack came from the direction of the Golan Heights and targeted several sites around the capital Damascus and the "southern region."

SANA had earlier reported "a kaboom heard in the vicinity of Damascus."

Other airstrikes attributed to Israel in the past week have hit targets near Damascus and the central province of Homs.

One of the recent attacks near the capital maimed five soldiers, and another injured two, Syrian media said. Other airstrikes in the past month have hit the Aleppo International Airport, temporarily closing its runway.

Some reports have said the string of airstrikes could be linked to last month’s suspected Hezbollah terror bombing near Megiddo in northern Israel, which Jerusalem believes was carried out by a terrorist who crossed the Leb

Hurras al-Din is an Islamist radical group established in Idlib, northwest Syria, in early 2018 as part of al-Qaeda’s global network.

The source told North Press that the commander attacked was residing near an IDP camp. He was targeted during his roaming in the olive orchards close to his house.

An hour before the targeting, the area witnessed an intense flight of two drones of the Coalition, according to the source.

It is said that the commander killed is a member of the same cell that was targeted in February and resulted in the killing of two members of Hurras al-Din.

Front) executed, on Sunday, eight former members in an infamous prison under its control in Idlib, northwestern Syria.

The extrajudicial execution was carried out at Prison 107, managed by the HTS’ General Security Apparatus, without clarifying the reasons for their arrest and execution.

A source in the prison told North Press that Abu Mohammad al-Julani, HTS’ leader, suddenly ordered executing the eight persons without a verdict from the court.

Abu Muhammad al-Azari, Abu Abdullah al-Russi, Abu Layth al-Azari, Sayf al-Din al-Filastini, Abu Zayd al-Masri, with three young men from the eastern countryside of Hama, were executed. The detainees’ relatives were notified after midnight, he added.

The source noted that the firing squad conducted the execution. The bodies of the foreigners will be buried, whereas the bodies of the Syrians will be handed over to their relatives after 72 hours of the execution.

The detainees were previously in the General Security Apparatus of the HTS since 2017.

In a previous report, a military source of HTS’ Red Bands, one of the most brutal faction in its ranks, told North Press that there are between 900 and 1,200 imported muscle within the HTS ranks from Chechnya, Tajikistan, and East Turkestan [China], in addition to Moroccans, Algerians, Libyans and several from Iraq and Egypt.
