There were flashing lights atop his sports utility vehicle and what appeared to be a police badge in his hand, but it was the man he tried to pull over who was the real police detective.
Robert Lane, 25, was arrested Tuesday on charges of criminal impersonation and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Suffolk County police said. Lane was driving an SUV fitted with flashing lights when he tried to stop the off-duty New York police detective on a highway on Long Island, Suffolk police said. They said Lane told investigators the detective had cut him off. The detective got suspicious when Lane drove up alongside him, identified himself as an officer and flashed a small police badge, Suffolk police said.

They said Lane told investigators the detective had cut him off
By coincidence Lane just happened to have a couple of flashing lights sitting atop his SUV that happened to be wired up and he noticed a badge laying on the seat beside him. After some quick thinking, he assembled an impromptu plan to pretend he was a police officer and pull the detective over thereby removing a grave threat to the community.

Back in the days when a hotel or store detective was referred to as a "house dick" there also used to be a name for people who bought used police crusiers and left them in their old livery with the spotlights and antenna still in place. They were called "limp dicks".
Hundreds of churches have been raided by thieves for their lead and copper amid a surge in the metals' value, insurers said yesterday.
Ecclesiastical Insurance, which insures churches and historical buildings, said it had dealt with more than 600 claims over the past 15 months, costing more than £1 million.
The raids have concentrated on churches in and around London as well as in areas such as Doncaster, Sheffield and Bristol. Lightning conductors were removed from two churches in the North East, including All Saints Church at Great Stainton, Co Durham.
Elaine Dickinson, the church warden of St Peter's, Stapenhill, Derbys, said there had been seven attempts to steal lead from the building in the past 18 months.
A joy of mine each year, is to get friends, family, even by myself, to tour our Texas highways and byways, for those Texas bluebonnets, and the other incredible wildflowers we have. I even pick them from the land around me, from under the mailbox for bouquets for my house.
When I came to Texas, first Houston, and then Austin.... there wasn't any beauty here for this Arkansas hillbilly. I followed Lady Bird Johnson.... living in Austin on the day of Nov 22..... we all knew her. I loved her quest of the beautifulcation she worked so hard for. I followed that, and now, there is rarely a month, that something isn't blooming and one has to thank Lady Bird.
Driving through Austin today in the rush hour traffic within the first 15 - 45 minutes of the announcement of her death, I noticed, how quickly our flags went to half mass.
Deeply involved in a conference that was happening at the LBJ library, I got to wander through the back hallways of the library, getting stuff and guests to conference rooms. And then, there she was.... with a glow of light just beaming from around her. Complete with her Secret Service guys and others, but she stopped, spoke, welcoming me and my conference to the center, still with that glow that just beamed from around her.
Often times, in my professional life, I would remember that moment, wanting to be as still, but yet as alive as she was, in that brief moment. Just what was it that produced that glow?
And with an extended family, heavy into the politics of Texas, well, Dem or Rep, she was there
Lady Bird Johnson has died at age 94. The former first lady leaves a rich legacy as political wife, environmental activist, businesswoman. Her marriage to a larger-than-life Texan thrust a shy, small-town girl named Lady Bird Johnson into the national spotlight. A love affair with the great outdoors kept her there.
And though nationally she was best known as the wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president, Mrs. Johnson was very much a figure in her own right. She mixed Southern graciousness with a quiet, cast-iron fortitude that not only won admirers but allowed her to steer a large business enterprise and help forge a national environmental movement.

Many a visitor to the ranch has waved a fond hello and extended greetings to that kind lady as she laid flowers on her husband's grave. Most of us have wives who, had they waited a bit longer, could have done far better. May the birds along the Pedernales sing softly.

As First Lady Lady Bird and her beautification programs was highly respected here in Guam in the 1960's, and beyond after LBJ left office. The local Govt + DOE even went so far as to publicly promote the planting or raising of Texas Bluebonnets and other specias in reserved areas of public schools and other buildings. Many locals also preferred her over Jackie.
We've chattered a bit recently about the centenary of Robert A. Heinlein, which was last Saturday. Today is another important date in the world of Heinlein. The Puppet Masters is a 1951 novel about alien slugs that land in Iowa and take over the minds of Americans. It's also a metaphor of anti-Communism, written during the days of Hiss-Chambers, the Rosenbergs, and McCarthy.
An excerpt from the first page: "For me it started much too early on July 12, '07..."
Today's the day. Watch out for slugs.

Considering 100 million dead at the hands of Communism in the 20th Century and the metastasis of its ideology through our education system, Joe certainly had a point, even though the methods and objectives [cheap theater for political advancement at the expense of other people's lives and careers] were to become the hallmark of mainstream politics we see daily in the Donkland Congress. And the next hearing is scheduled ....

I've always considered that number to be too low, by at least half.
As I understand it, that number is for those murdered outright (and I consider "legal" executions murders in this context). It does not include all those killed in wars started by communists.

Rosie has went from a somewhat amusing on-screen peronsality (about 10 yrs ago) to one of the most low-rent bottom of the barrel media attention whores....right up there w/Paris Hilton & Nicole Richie. I'm also starting to believe she's prolly bi-polar.
Ahab: I consign thee to the depths of hell, and from the depths of hell I stab at thee.....
Giant Duck: Quack! Quack!
Ahab: To the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee...
Giant Duck: Quaaaaak!
Ahab: for hate's sake I spit my last breath... oh, never mind...

And besides, those rubber ducks, once they've conquered Europe, will impose a new strict moral New Order, as demonstrated in this rare document here below of Ducky, their Supreme Leader :
The Lahore High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail application of Christian citizen Amanat Masih (45), resident of Nabipur Virkan village, Sheikhupura.
Amanat was booked under the blasphemy law on March 23, 2007, for allegedly desecrating the Quran. The court said the accused had admitted in his petition that he had in his ignorance desecrated the Quran. It also said ignorance was no excuse to break the law.
Amanat is accused of burning the Quran on the directions of Liaqat Ali. According to the prosecution, Amanat had said his wife Shamim had ran away from him and that to make her return Liaqat Ali had told him to burn the Quran. Sheikhupura Factory Area police registered a case against Amanat under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The police had arrested Amant on the complaint of Mehmood Ahmed.
Mehmood had told the police that he was sitting in his mosque along with other people when Khawar Sajjad, an area resident, came to them and showed them burned pages of the Quran, which he had gathered from the street. He said they started searching for the culprit and found more pages burnt outside Amanats house.
They grabbed hold of Amant who allegedly admitted to have burned the Quran, saying he was mentally disturbed and his wife had eloped. He told them that Liaqat had also given him an epitaph that he had buried in his courtyard. Mehmood Ahmed said they also dug out the epitaph. He said they called the police who arrested the accused and started legal proceedings against him. Ferozewala sessions court has already rejected his post-arrest bail application.

The next ten weeks will be absolutely crucial in determining the fate of the Iraq War. Over the summer, Democrats (and some Republicans) on Capitol Hill, pressured by radical anti-war activists, plan to introduce legislation to undermine the mission in Iraq, just as General Petraeus, and his counter-insurgency strategy, are showing real signs of progress.
Despite the great courage and success of our troops in Iraq, many Senate Republicans are wavering in their support for the mission. And in the past two weeks alone, 3 Republican senators have raised the white flag on Iraq. If just a few more defect, the Senate could over-ride a presidential veto and set a deadline for defeat.
Amongst this political noise, in ten weeks General Petraeus will testify before Congress about the situation in Iraq. Vets for Freedom plans to lead the charge to support General Petraeus and stop anti-war radicals and politicians on Capitol Hill from undermining the troops-and their mission-for the sake of short-term political gain.
If you believe America must defeat radical Islamists in Iraq, we need you to get involved with Vets for Freedom's "Ten Weeks to Testimony." For the next ten weeks, you will receive an email every Monday morning, outlining how you can make a difference during that week. This is a call to duty! The time for action is now!
And if you're not sure if you should get involved, check out what radical anti-war groups are planning. They go so far as to "express solidarity with the resistance movements in [Iraq and Afghanistan]." This is an outrage, and we mustn't let groups like this-and their loud voices-intimidate Congress. There is too much as stake!

Moud + Radical Islam ideally desire a complete withdrawal of US-Allied milfors from the ME, besides elimination of US-Western influence, NOT A TEMPORARY OR PARTIAL WITHDRAWAL/PULLOUT THAT LEAVES SIZABLE + POTENT US-ALLIED FORCES IN IRAQ-ME. PC, PERSONAL POL ADVANTAGE-POWER, and 2008 ELEX ETC > is why Moud + Radical islam can no longer rely on anti-Dubya, anti-US US Politicos, Globalists, nor even the anti-Bush/US MSM. ABOVE PLUS US GLOBAL-REGIONAL ENTRENCHMENT > likely can't wait 4 yarns for Dubya's successor to accomplish total US withdrawal from the ME.
A new type of intruder has been needling authorities at Israel's top secret nuclear research centre -- one of the four-legged variety.
Israeli Parks Authority spokeswoman Osnat Eitan confirmed a newspaper report that park rangers had been sent to the facility at Dimona, believed by experts to be used to produce atomic weapons, to catch dozens of porcupines that have been chewing through saplings and garden hoses.
Using potatoes and chocolate milk as bait, the prickly animals were being trapped and moved elsewhere, Eitan said.
The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper quoted the site's gardener, David Golan, as saying a porcupine population explosion posed a security threat.
Israel says its conducts nuclear research in Dimona in the Negev desert and refuses to comment on reports that the reactor has produced plutonium for atomic bombs. Badgers yesterday. Porcupines today. Hedgehogs tomorrow?
