[FoxNews] Former Mexican defense secretary Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos, who led the country’s army for six years under ex-President Enrique Peña Nieto, has been arrested on drug trafficking and money laundering charges at Los Angeles International Airport, U.S. and Mexican sources said Thursday.
Two people with knowledge of the arrest said Cienfuegos was taken into custody on a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration warrant. One of the people said the warrant was for drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
The DEA declined to comment Thursday night.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, wrote on his Twitter account that U.S. Ambassador Christopher Landau had informed him of the retired general’s arrest and that Cienfuegos had a right to receive consular assistance.
Cienfuegos served from 2012 to 2018 as secretary of defense under Peña Nieto. He is the highest-ranking former Cabinet official arrested since the top Mexican security official Genaro Garcia Luna was arrested in Texas in 2019. Garcia Luna, who served under former President Felipe Calderón, has pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges.
Cienfuegos is 72 years old and has retired from active duty. Mexico’s Defense Department had no immediate reaction to the arrest.

Civilians have also been affected by the recent surge in violence in the country. At least six non-combatants were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside mine in the city of Ferozkoh, the center of Ghor province in the west of Afghanistan, the Interior Affairs Ministry said.
The Senate Speaker Fazl Hadi Moslemyar at an event in Kabul on Friday called on the Taliban to agree on a ceasefire.
"Our opposition, the Taliban, should agree on a ceasefire if they call themselves Moslems and if they feel the pain of the Moslem nation of Afghanistan," he said.
"If there is a will for peace both from the government and the Taliban, it should not take more than two or three months. Why should it take years?" asked Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal, former Afghan ambassador to Pakistain.
Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, on Thursday said the current level of violence is a threat to the grinding of the peace processor.
"Attacks have been on the rise in recent weeks - threatening the grinding of the peace processor and alarming the Afghan people and their regional and international supporters," Khalilzad said.

From the military perspective, the north-eastern Badakhshan province is one of the strategic provinces in the north. Badakhshan has 27 districts and shares borders with Pakistain, China and Tajikistan.
The increase in violence comes amidst ongoing peace negotiations in Doha.
Sure, but the negotiations are only with the Quetta Shura Taliban. All other Taliban groups, not to mention non-Taliban jihadis, are even less bound by any agreement than the negotiators.

[All Africa] The Mozambican defence and security forces on Wednesday night repelled a terrorist attack against the town of Macomia, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, reports Friday's issue of the independent newssheet "Carta de Mocambique".
The jihadist murderous Moslems first attacked the village of Nacate, about 16 kilmetres from Macoma, and then moved towards the town.
The terrorist group started to burn houses, but soon found it was outnumbered by the Mozambican forces. The newsheet's sources said the terrorist were divided into three groups, numbering a total of about 80.
But they faced some 200 Mozambican troops, and so retreated. One person is known to have died, a woman burnt alive inside her house when the murderous Moslems set it on fire. The sources did not know whether any murderous Moslems or Mozambican troops had bit the dust.
Further north, in Palma district, the Mozambican forces say they came across arms caches in some houses. The guns were found in an operation against houses suspected of sheltering terrorists. But they did not say how many guns were found, or when these searches took place.
There was also an attack on Wednesday night against Ndique village, in Quissanga district, according to a report in a second newssheet, "Mediafax". Two people, one elderly and the other young, were rubbed out in this raid, but no further details are yet available.
"Mediafax" also reported a possible attack by Mozambican jihadists across the border, in southern Tanzania. Citing the portal "Pinnacle News", the newssheet said the attack supposedly took place against the village of Quitaia, near the Mtwara quiet provincial capital.
15 people are believed to have died, but it is not known whether they were Tanzanians or Mozambicans, since the village shelters Mozambican refugees fleeing from the terror in their own country.
The Tanzanian authorities have not yet confirmed the attack.

Which may well mean doing counterproductive things internally; killing suspected spies, restricting various activities they'd prefer to be able to do.
