A gunman killed eight people at a mall in Omaha this afternoon and then killed himself, setting off bedlam and panic among holiday shoppers, the police said. The person who we believe to be the shooter has died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Sgt. Teresa Negron of the Omaha Police Department said at a televised news briefing late this afternoon after the police had secured the area. We have been able to clear the mall, she said. We dont believe we have any other shooters. The police said that at least five other people had been injured in the shootings.
Sergeant Negron said the shooter was armed with a rifle. She did not give his identity during the news briefing, but KETV television of Omaha, citing Sarpy County Sheriffs Department, later identified gunman as Robert A. Hawkins, 19, of Bellevue, Neb. We are still conducting the investigation, Sergeant Negron said, adding that the citys mayor, who was out of town, was on his way back to Omaha.
Sergeant Negron said the police received a 911 call from someone inside the Westroads Mall on the west side of Omaha, and shots could be heard in the background. The first police officers arrived at the mall six minutes after the first call, she said, but by then the shootings were over.

Suicide with company, when the mall security didn't get there fast enough to do it for him. I heard on the news that his parents had kicked him out, his girlfriend broke up with him, and he'd been drinking and doing drugs to cure the resulting depression.

He used an AK-47 and a live grenade was found in the landscaping at the same mall Friday. ICE just deported some MS-13 from Bellevue,(Offutt) too. This is one of the main immigrant pipelines in the Midwest and could have been much worse if he had access to so much firepower.
What is thought to be the worlds largest Asian elephant has been missing from a Nepali wildlife reserve for a year and may well be dead, a reserve official said on Wednesday.
Raja Gaj, or king elephant, was estimated to be 11 feet 3 inches tall at the shoulder, some two feet taller than the average Asian elephant. The bull was one of the main tourist attractions at Bardia National Park in southwest Nepal. When I saw it last it was lean and thin, and finding it difficult to carry its own weight, Phanindra Kharel, a senior conservationist at the park, said. Raja Gaj is, or was, more than 70 years old. There is very little possibility of finding such an old animal alive. Kharel said he could not be sure if Raja Gaj had been killed by poachers, an illegal but common activity in the region.

Rowing boats from the home of the 2006 World Rowing Championships, Eton College, in Great Britain are being shipped to Afghanistan, to a boat club being built on the site of a former military training camp.
The fledgling Afghan rowing team struggles to row in Afghanistan because they don't have any boats. Instead their rag-tag squad, with Olympic ambitions, is forced to train alongside Pakistani rowers, in Pakistani boats, on a lake outside of Pakistans capital, Islamabad. But all that is set to change after the oarsmen's plight came to the attention of Britain's ambassador to Afghanistan, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles.
Sir Sherard persuaded the £26,000-a-year Eton College to donate two coxed fours and two coxless fours to Afghanistan's Water Sports Federation, which is run by a former warlord commander.

Swedish customs officers have been accused of secretly installing GPS transmitters on people's cars to detect if they are crossing the border to Finland to fill up on cheap Finnish diesel. It has become common in border areas of northern Sweden for people to travel to Finland to buy cheap Finnish diesel, particularly for use in warming their homes, reports Svenska Dagbladet.
Two people have told TV8's Adaktusson programme, to be shown on Thursday, that they have found GPS transmitters under their cars. They believe these are placed there by customs to track their movements over the border. They report having been stopped regularly by customs officers.
Customs representatives refused to take part in the programme, but two people who found GPS transmitters attached with magnets to the underside of their cars point the finger at customs officers. The transmitters are marked with numbers and covered in net bags.
Tax differences mean that Finnish diesel is four kronor per litre cheaper in Finland, reports Svenska Dagbladet. 1 SEK = .156 USD
Swedish Customs wants to put a stop to Swedes buying fuel in Finland. It argues that Swedes have the right under EU law to travel there to buy the occasional can of diesel, but that they cannot systematically fill up over the border.

Swedish drivers should put to work some of numerous their Palestinian welfare moochers to tunnel to Finland.

Take the GPS transmitters and put them up in a tall tree, or throw them in a lake, or better yet, in a recycling center.

Yowza, that's about $2.50 per gallon cheaper. So how's that socialism working for ya, Sweden? Is the warm and fuzzy feeling it gives you a good substitute for actual heating oil?

DHAKA - Myanmar has agreed to release 49 Bangladeshi fishermen and loggers arrested in border areas between the two countries over recent months, Bangladesh officials said on Wednesday. They are expected to be released and handed over to Bangladesh border forces soon, the officials said.
Bangladesh said the fishermen and loggers had been picked up by the Myanmar border force, Nasak, while they were working inside Bangladeshi territory. I see this as a good and friendly gesture ... It shows that patient diplomacy bears fruit, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, foreign affairs adviser to the interim government, said in a statement.
Bangladesh and Myanmar share a 320-km (200-mile) border. Relations between the countries are generally good, but there are occasional spats over allegations that fishermen stray out of their territorial waters.
