Or connected to the discrepancy on the amount of oil spilled off South Korea? Liquid cocaine has also been found in children's juice boxes, making checking cargo containers more closely imperative.

I have begun to wonder if the cultural practice of tipping, as common in the US vs "lite tipping" common in the EU changes the interaction.
In the US the trend is for the server to be your buddy, and make sure that your $18 martini is reordered before the current one is even finished. In France, you more often than not are left alone and actually have to search the server out for a refill. "Surly and inattentive" or more respectful of your dining experience, I have not decided.
I actually have enjoyed the "take all the time you like" plan in France compared to the smiling kid with buttons on his suspenders bringing me my check automatically if I wave him off for the moment.
Sure, the French don't suffer perceived or legitimate rudeness well from any culture, but I am told they are just as surly to rude rude frenchman too.
I think French service is a bit of a sterotype that even I was guilty of before visiting France.
As far as French women... magnifique in all respects.
History Channel PS -They didn't bathe much in water becuase they thought it spread the plague...thus the perfume industry was created out of necessity...you can thank a rat for that.

The most important part of this article is that the report takes the socialist route of blaming low wages imes below minimum wage) and poor training.
American wait staff and bartenders get paid below minimum and get no more training than is absolutely neccessary.
The French are right about having a problem, but they are clueless as to the reason.

The "plight of the underpaid" crosses many, many, many more occupations than food industry workers! I have been in long conversations with Europeans that the reason tipping isn't expected in Europe is because the positions are eligable for benefits, so the whole undercompensated arguement, particularly when compared to USA is apples and oranges.
I have had a German say "we view waiters as professional much like accountants and doctors. Would you leave a tip for them?"
I think it is just random whining because they don't make enough money to live in expensive cities like Paris. My Doctor says the same thing.

Bangladeshs detained former prime ministers may be sent into exile as part of a deal to drop corruption charges against them, a leading newspaper said on Thursday.
A proposal to this effect has apparently been sent to Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, the Amar Desh (My Country) daily reported. Other conditions stipulate that none of their immediate family members could be involved in active politics, said the daily known for its pro-Khaleda stance.
Bangladeshs army-backed interim government, which took over in January following political violence, has put Hasina and her bitter rival Khaleda in jail pending trial for alleged graft and abuse of power when they alternated as prime minister from 1991 to 2006.
They have both denied the charges, which they say are meant to keep them from contesting elections planned for late next year.
The Amar Desh story followed reports in other media that the interim government, headed by former central bank chief Fakhruddin Ahmed, was seeking a deal with the two women to give them an honourable exit from politics and end their dynastic influence over millions of followers.
If the two leaders agree with the latest proposals, maybe (they will be) freed with general amnesty, Amar Desh said. In that case they, along with their family members, may be sent to a foreign country of their choice with a monthly allowance for their livelihood. Hasinas Awami League and Khaledas Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had no comment on the reports. We have not heard anything like this, nor do we know if there is anything cooking up, said a BNP leader who asked not to be identified.

In a report published this week by security firm SecureWorks, researchers reveal that the recent flurry of Ron Paul spam originated from a Reactor botnet controlled by a commercial spammer through a colocation facility in the US.
The researchers analyzed header elements of the spam e-mails to trace them back to zombie systems that were infected with the Srizbi trojan, an unusual piece of malware with highly advanced features. According to Symantec research, which has independently studied Srizbi, the trojan is one of the first pieces of malware found in the wild to operate fully in kernel mode with no userspace code. Srizbi bypasses firewalls and packet sniffers by directly manipulating the kernel-level TCP/IP stack. The Srizbi trojan is largely propagated by the well-known msiesettings.com site, which is paid by spammers to deploy viruses and trojans for spam botnets.
SecureWorks collaborated with network administrators to analyze the traffic from some of the computers infected with Srizbi that were responsible for sending the Ron Paul spam. This allowed the researchers to discover the location from which the botnet was operated--a colocation facility in the US. The researchers collaborated with Spamhaus to get the server shut down and then obtained the source code used on the control system, a Python-based spam botnet management tool known as the Reactor Mailer. The logs present on the system prove that it was indeed the origin of the Ron Paul spam. Further research showed that other systems in the same colocation facility were also controlling various segments of the Srizbi botnet, and using it to transmit spam advertising replica watches and enlargement pills. Birds of a feather, you know.

An Indian official tasked with reviving cultural activities in schools in revolt-hit Kashmir has been pulled from the post after Muslim hardliners said his shows were promoting obscenity.
A group of firebrand Muslim women activists, the Daughters of Faith, had said cultural official Aziz Hajni would be accused of exploiting our daughters unless he was moved. Officials confirmed he had been shifted.
The cultural activities being introduced to schools in Kashmir include debates and art competitions. But school children have also been dancing to Bollywood numbers in front of politicians and visiting federal dignitories.
Asiya Andarbi, leader of the Daughters of Faith, said such activities were promoting obscenity among Muslim Kashmirs youth. We will soon start agitation and seek the closure of this cultural wing, which has become a ground for exploitation of our daughters, said Andarbi. Our daughters are forced to dance before strangers, said Andarbi, who has spent time behind bars in the past for links to militants. This is also a strategy to wean students away from Islam.
NEW DELHI - The Indian government said on Thursday it had scrapped a 600-million-dollar deal to buy 197 military helicopters from EADS arm Eurocopter after allegations of corruption in the bidding process. The government has decided to cancel the RFP (request for proposal) for 197 helicopters for the army. A fresh RFP will be issued soon, defence ministry spokesman Sitanshu Kar told AFP.
A fresh tender will be issued early in the new financial year which begins in April, an official of the policymaking Defence Acquisition Committee said.

The other day I kicked the tires of a theory espoused by a freelance journalist from up in Boston. He was suggesting that anybody whether blogger or citizen journalist or YouTube uploader should be considered a journalist if they do something that genuinely looks like journalism. Like this stupid question Helen?
More important than labeling, in the authors mind, was the thought that these genuine-seeming journalists should be afforded the legal protections granted to accredited media members.
Well, not that it should come as too much of a surprise, but old school White House scribe Helen Thomas isnt drinking that everybodys a journalist! kool-aid.

No, but I do think it is kind of sad when everybody who owns a laptop thinks they're a journalist and doesn't understand the ethics. We do have to have some sense of what's right and wrong in this job. Of how far we can go. We don't make accusations without absolute proof. We're not prosecutors. We don't assume.
So if there's this amateur league of journalists out there, trying to do what you do...

So what's all this huff and puff I hear about this here computer internet thingy! In my day we didn't worry about this here wi-fi and bandwidth and all that new fangled hooey! In my day all we needed was some tree bark and enough berrys to crush together to make some ink and a sharp quilled bird feather to make a pen. In my day, if a handsome Democratic president was screwing around with a movie star or an intern or some other painted up hussy, you did what every good journalist is supposed to do. Ya covered it up!

To be a proper journalists requires total distrust if not loathing of Republicans. The current batch of bloggers seems split on the issue.
