Followup to backup site...
It's the Rantburg site specifically that seems unstable. Please don't forget to bookmark the aach.net/rantburg site. I'll be doing another server swap within the next week, and I'll reload it all from scratch.

#1  How long will the aach.net site stay up? My work place IT has apparently decided that regular Rantburg address qualifies as a "chat" site and they have blocked it. Grrrrr.

#2  aach.net will be around. I have several other sites running on it, unassociated with Rantburg. I don't think Our Wedding Cakes.com will slow down too much.

#3 Come now Rantburgers, your Zionist lies about WMD and propaganda are killing Americans, the Iraqis are defending against you and the naive Americans are innocent victims whose blood is on your hands.

Comments are broken at the moment. I'm trying to get a server restart to fix the problem, but can't connect. Meanwhile, we have a backup site here that seems to be working okay, though your cookies are going to be hosed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Looks like both sites are working now (12.35 EST). I had to do a database restore when we restarted, though.

Arabia
Hamdi to be booted back to Saudi Arabia
"Get out and stay out!"
Yaser Esam Hamdi is expected to be flown home to Saudi Arabia via U.S. military aircraft today, "wearing civilian clothes and unhooded," as part of an unusual agreement ending his nearly three years of being held incommunicado and without charges by the federal government. Hamdi, a 24-year-old accidentally born in native of Louisiana, has been in U.S. custody since late 2001 after forces of the Northern Alliance captured him in the Afghanistan war zone. The U.S. accused Hamdi of fighting for the Taliban and held him in isolation, denying him access to the courts or to legal counsel. The Bush administration argued that Hamdi could be held that way indefinitely as an "enemy combatant" in a continuing war on terror.

But in July, the U.S. Supreme Court accepted an argument by Hamdi's lawyer, federal public defender Frank W. Dunham Jr., that Hamdi had the right to contest his detention. After Dunham finally met with his client, the Justice Department began negotiating to send Hamdi home. The text of the agreement, filed in federal court on Friday, gives some idea of why the negotiations took weeks. The government maintains in the agreement that "Hamdi was affiliated with a military unit and is an enemy combatant," while Hamdi denies having been involved with either the Taliban or al-Qaida. Hamdi agreed to renounce any claim to U.S. citizenship after his return to Saudi Arabia, where he has lived most of his life. He agreed to stay clear of terrorist activities, and to accept travel restrictions. The agreement says Hamdi "hereby renounces terrorism and violent jihad."
Wanna bet he had his fingers crossed?
Doesn't have to, everyone knows it's ok to lie to infidels
Hamdi secured the government's agreement to fly him straight to Saudi Arabia "without unreasonable delay in route and without travel to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba" where Hamdi was detained before his transfer to Navy brigs in Norfolk and then Charleston.
Wonder how long until he's bagged in Waziristan?

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Beslan militants 'called out for pizza Middle East'
Two of the militants who took part in the Beslan school hostage siege phoned the Middle East during the drama, a senior source from the Russian security services has said.
"Hello, Mom? Guess where I am!"
The official said two calls were made from Beslan in Arabic, and that "one call was to Saudi Arabia by one of the Arabs who was there". He declined to give further details or say where the second call was placed to, but said one of the calls was made on the second day of the siege, and that the investigation had established there were only two Arabs in the group - not 10 as was first suggested. The Kremlin has insisted there is a link between inter national terrorist groups sympathetic to al-Qaida and the Chechen separatists, although some analysts have challenged this claim.

Survivors of the Beslan siege, which killed 329 people, have said one of the militants appeared to be of Arab extraction and another of Arab or African descent. While the majority were Russian citizens and at least six were Chechens, the Kremlin has said the attack was fuelled by foreigners. After the siege, Crown Prince Abdullah, the Saudi leader, phoned Vladimir Putin to promise greater support for the war against terrorism. The Saudi embassy could not be reached for comment yesterday.

I disagree, Dec 21, 2012. Mayans prophecied that after that date, a new era would enfold. I can't imagine a new era with Mecca still standing.

Anyway, I remember that Titor dude said something about an interesting event happening at that date akin to the parting sea by Moses. I suppose that Mekka being smitten would qualify for an interesting even akin to ... you get the idea. :-)

Two Arrested in Death of U.S. Journalist
Two Chechen men suspected of taking part in the murder of American journalist Paul Klebnikov have been arrested, police said Tuesday, and one commentator cited his interviews with a rebel leader as a possible motive. Three guns were seized from the men, and preliminary findings indicated that one of the weapons might have been used in the July 9 murder of Klebnikov, the editor of Forbes magazine's Russian edition, police chief Vladimir Pronin told the Interfax news agency. He added that the suspects, who were detained overnight, had kidnapped an unidentified person prior to the killing.

Police spokesman Pavel Klimovsky confirmed the suspects had been detained, but gave no other details. The chief prosecutor's office later sharply reprimanded Pronin, telling Interfax that nobody is authorized to comment on the case except the appropriate investigator and prosecutor. The release of information by anyone else is "unacceptable" and could seriously hurt efforts to solve the crime, Interfax quoted the prrosecutor general's office as saying. In a telephone call to The Associated Press in New York, Klebnikov's brother, Michael, read a statement from the family saying it would "wait to see the incontrovertible evidence that the individuals apprehended today in Moscow are indeed responsible for Paul's murder. In any case, this would be only a first step to identifying, apprehending and convicting those responsible for ordering his assassination." Klebnikov, an American of Russian ancestry, was gunned down outside the magazine's office in downtown Moscow in a slaying that compounded concerns about the safety of journalists in Russia and about the violence that is often used to settle scores.

Kyrgyzstan 'foils plutonium plot'
Authorities in Kyrgyzstan say they have arrested two men who were trying to sell a large quantity of plutonium on the black market. The men were detained last week near the capital, Bishkek, but the news was not immediately released. There has been growing concern that radioactive materials from former Soviet military or research sites could fall into the hands of extremists. Plutonium is very toxic and can be used in atomic weapons or as reactor fuel. The highly radioactive material could be used to make a dirty bomb - a non-nuclear explosive which scatters radioactive material packed inside it. The national security service in the remote mountainous republic says it arrested two Kyrgyz citizens and confiscated 60 small containers containing plutonium-239. There is no information on exactly what quantity of plutonium was in the containers.
Wanna bet it's "red mercury"?
Kyrgyz security agents tracked the men who were attempting to sell the plutonium and arrested them while posing as buyers. The origin of the material is unknown. Security officials say it is not used in Kyrgyzstan, so they think it may have come from one of the neighbouring republics or from Russia.

Abu Hafs al-Urduni is Binny's envoy to Chechnya
Abu Hafs al-Urduni, a close associate of Osama Bin Laden, has been put in charge of rebel activities in Chechnya, the Gazeta daily reports. The newspaper writes that Russian special services know little of Abu Hafs. The article writes that Abu Hafs and two more foreign warlords, known for their roles in Chechen armed formations — Abu Al Walid and Khattab — got to know Bin Laden in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war. In 1993 Bin Laden sent all three to Tajikistan where they fought for two years in the civil war. In 1995 the three men arrived in Chechnya. Because of their close ties with Bin Laden, Khattab and Abu Al Walid controlled the money the Chechen guerillas received from their foreign sponsors.

The spokesman for the Federal HQ in the Northern Caucasus, Ilya Shabalkin, said late last week that Abu Al Walid's death had been confirmed. "During a special operation in mid-April 2004 federal forces eliminated the Arab mercenary and functionary of the international terrorist organizations Muslim Brothers and Al-Qa'idah, Abu al-Walid. Operational data, gathered by the special services, and information from other sources indicates that his place has been taken by another Arab mercenary, Abu-Hafs," Shabalkin said.

Turkish mercenary among dead hard boyz
The Russian military said its troops have clashed with fighters in southern Chechnya, killing five of them, including a Turkish national. A military spokesman, Ilya Shabalkin, said a group of fighters were spotted late yesterday near the village of Serzhen-Yurt, some 35 kilometers southeast of Grozny. "During the search of the area, near to the place [where the fighters were killed], the body of a fighter was found. There were papers which confirmed that he was a Turkish citizen. He had a Turkish international passport and a [ID] card that replaces a [local] passport in this country," Shabalkin said. During a shootout between Russian forces and the suspects, five militants were killed. Shabalkin said one of those killed had identity papers identifying him as a Turkish citizen. The Russian military spokesman said the armed group presumably included other foreign nationals. Russian forces were still searching today for insurgents who managed to escape after the battle.

Europe
Second Olympic Air bomb threat forces down flight
Looking more like the work of some sick inadequates with a grudge or spurned blackmailer.
A New York-bound Olympic Airways flight carrying 295 passengers has landed in Ireland after a bomb alert. An Athens newspaper received warning of a bomb on board, the airline said - the second such incident in three days. "There was a call to a local newspaper around 3.45pm (1245 GMT) saying a bomb on the plane would explode in an hour," Olympic Airlines' Melina Pitta said. "Nothing has happened," she added. The plane made an emergency landing at Shannon, the nearest airport.

The BBC's Richard Galpin, in Athens, says Greek officials have said the incident is an "absolute carbon copy" of an incident on Sunday. The second aircraft, with a crew of 12, took off from Athens at 1013 GMT, Ms Pitta said. The airline spokesman said US authorities had refused permission for the plane to land at New York's JFK airport.

Airline sources told the Greek news agency ANA that they believed the bomb threat was a hoax, adding that passenger checks in Athens were rigorous. David Learmount, operations and safety editor of Flight International magazine, told the Press Association news agency: "What the worry is now is that this could spark off copy-cat actions that could disrupt airline services."
Some high profile long term prison sentences are in order.

#1  Hmmmmm. Lets see. Is Olympic on the ropes like Alitalia and other EU airlines since their unions have run them out of business? Good way to get the price down to the fire sale level. Wonder who has been interested in buying an EU carrier. Someone who ain't European, for example and is looking to buy into a major transport service between mid-east and Europe and in this case the USA???

Inquiry into threat to Spanish secret service
An investigation was underway Tuesday after two newspapers in the southern city of Almeria received copies of a letter written in Arabic threatening law enforcement personnel involved in the war against Islamic terrorism. Juan Jose Lopez Garzon, the central government's representative to the Andalusia region, told a press conference the letter appeared last week. He urged local residents to remain calm.
"Remain calm, all is well!"
Lopez Garzon declined comment on whether any evidence had been uncovered pointing to the existence of the group that sent the letters, the self-proclaimed "Andalusian Suicide Brigades." "(Citizens) may rest assured that any incident of this sort, no matter how dubious, will be investigated thoroughly," he said. "And this case will, naturally, be handled in such a fashion."

Germany jails leftist for bombing
"Into das paddyvagen mit dir!"
A German court has sentenced a suspected former ultra-left guerrilla to 12 years in jail for a 1991 bomb attack on Soviet Jews in Budapest. Andrea Klump, 47, was convicted on 32 counts of being an accessory to attempted murder - charges she denied.
"Lies, all lies!"
The court in Stuttgart linked the bombing to a group called the "Movement for the Liberation of Palestine". Klump - already serving a nine-year sentence - has been linked to Germany's ultra-left Red Army Faction.
Birds of a feather, etc..
The Budapest attack injured two police officers and four passengers, who were on their way to the city's airport to catch a flight to Israel. Klump was jailed in 2001 for her role in the failed 1988 bombing of a Spanish disco frequented by US servicemen. She admitted last month that she had prior knowledge of the Budapest attack, but denied direct involvement in the plot. Investigators found DNA evidence in 2001 linking her to a Budapest apartment at the time of the bombing.

Southeast Asia
Nine terrs militants face the high jump over Java bomb blast
Nine militants face death sentence over Java bomb blast
Nine hardline Indonesian Muslims who attended a bomb-making class that went awry have gone on trial here and could face death if convicted under an anti-terror law. The nine were accused of involvement in a bomb-making workshop held under the guise of a Koranic recital at a house in Cimanggis on the central island of Java in March, which ended when one of the devices assembled exploded. Four of the group went on trial Tuesday charged separately with "taking part in a sinister conspiracy" to carry out an act of terrorism, said Juniati, a clerk at the Cibinong district court, south of Jakarta. On Monday, the other five members of the group — including the wife of the owner of the house — also went on trial at the same district court, said another court clerk Agung. The alleged leader of the group, 32-year-old Oman Rahman has been charged with planning or motivating others to take part in terrorism and ordering others to illegally engage in efforts to produce explosives, Agung said. The bomb-making ingredients that the group was using were similar to those used in the Bali nightclub attacks of October 2002 in which 202 people were killed.

Police have said the group intended to use the bombs to battle "enemies of Islam", but it was not clear if they were connected to the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah, which has carried out a spate of attacks in recent years. These include the Bali attack and the Jakarta Marriott hotel bombing last August which killed 12 people. Jemaah Islamiyah is also believed to be behind a deadly suicide bomb attack two weeks ago on the Australian embassy in Jakarta.

Abu Sayyaf's 'spiritual adviser' captured
Troops in the Philippines have captured the "spiritual adviser" of the Abu Sayyaf along with two other members of the Al Qaeda-linked band, a military spokesman says. Colonel Gominto Tirino says Abraham Jumdaini was arrested on September 21 in the southern island of Jolo. However, his capture was only revealed today, after former Abu Sayyaf members identified him as the person recruited by Abu Sayyaf founder Abdurajak Janjalani. He says an anti-terrorist task force captured two more Abu Sayyaf members a day later but they are still being questioned.
"Ooch! Ouch! I'll talk! I'll talk!"
"Reynaldo, give him his testicle back."
He declines to reveal reveal their identities. The military says Jumdaini, a former imam in a Jolo town mosque, had been tasked to use religion to indoctrinate Abu Sayyaf recruits to carry out kidnappings and raids. It says he was also involved in various kidnappings for ransom of Filipino Christians as well as in the abduction of 21 western tourists and Asian hotel workers from the Sipadan resort in Malaysia in 2000. Most of the hostages in that incident were later freed after ransom was paid. Although the Government has killed and captured most of the Abu Sayyaf leadership, including Janjalani, the group is still active in the southern islands of the Philippines.

Philippines launches a major offensive against Abu Sayyaf
US-backed forces have launched a major assault to capture or kill an Abu Sayyaf leader wanted by Washington, sparking clashes that killed a Philippine marine and left an undetermined number of rebels dead, officials said yesterday. The assaults, which began on Friday in the mountain jungles of Patikul on southern Jolo island, were aimed at neutralising Radulan Sahiron and a number of Abu Sayyaf commanders who reportedly had planned to meet there last week, apparently to plot another terror strike, military sources said. Sahiron, a one-armed, horse-riding Abu Sayyaf commander based in Patikul, is on a US Defence Department list of wanted terrorists. The Philippine authorities have linked him to a number of kidnappings, including the April 2000 abduction of 21 Western tourists and Asian workers from neighbouring Malaysia.

Army Brigadier-General Agustin Dimaala, who was helping oversee the operations, confirmed that assaults were under way against Sahiron's group, about 940km south of Manila. One marine was killed and six others were injured, two while defusing a homemade bomb, officials said. There was no indication if Sahiron, who is believed to have about 40 armed followers, had been killed in running gunbattles, officials said. 'We are optimistic,' Brig-Gen Dimaala said. 'The operations are continuing and the troops are still in the mountain.'

US forces provided training and equipment to Filipino troops involved in the assaults, but were not involved in actual combat, he said. Night-vision goggles provided by the Americans allowed Filipino troops to locate and engage a group of rebels, who have split into smaller groups, late on Monday, another official said. Although now down to about 400 guerillas from a peak strength of more than 1,000 men in early 2000, the Abu Sayyaf is still capable of bombings and other terror attacks, the military said.

JI operatives sneaked into Davao
At least four suspected Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) operatives had sneaked into the city days before the visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last week. Col. Eduardo del Rosario, commander of the Task Force Davao, said they received reports about the presence of the JI members days before the President's visit for the Mindanao Business Conference on Sept. 16. He said the suspected terrorists came from Central Mindanao. He, however, did not elaborate.

Early this month, the Inquirer reported JI activities in Central Mindanao, particularly in areas supposed to be controlled by the rebel group Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The report, based on police intelligence, said the JI with foreign and local members, was planning to bomb either or both the cities of Davao and General Santos. An intelligence officer of the police office in Central Mindanao said the suspected JI members have also been training local rebels on the manufacture of bombs using car batteries.

The report came while leaders of MILF called on their members to be vigilant against the possible entry of JI operatives in their areas following the deadly attack on the Australian Embassy in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Del Rosario said the JI's terror plans were thwarted by surveillance and early action. He said the JI members left a day after Ms Arroyo's visit to the city.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Riots in Lebanon after al Qaeda suspect dies in custody
After overnight riots, thousands of people in Lebanon staged a protest following the death in custody of a suspected Al-Qaeda activist arrested for alleged bomb plots against Western embassies.
"But, but, he had a bum ticker! Honest! We tried to get him to cut back on the grilled goat shwarmas, but... And second-hand smoke from all those boomers prolly contributed, too!"
Riots in Majdal Anjar, a town on the border with Syria, called for the resignation of Lebanon's Interior Minister Elias Murr and for an independent legal and medical investigation into the death of Ismail Mohammed al-Khatib.
Translation: "String 'im up!"
Khatib, described by Lebanese authorities as Lebanon's top activist of al-Qaeda network, was among 10 people arrested last week over alleged plans to attack the Italian embassy in Beirut.
"But he wuz innocent! Hey, I was in the same Bombmaking 101 with him and I can tell ya, he's a regular Arab guy."
He died on Monday at the age of 31 after suffering what the Lebanese security services said was a "massive heart attack." A statement from the Beirut police department said Al Khatib, 31 suffered a heart attack in prison and was rushed to Dahr Al Basheq Hospital for treatment. But he passed away at midmorning Monday.
Hmmm... and he may have been 31. Just a guess.
According to AFP, when news of his death reached his hometown of Majdal Anjar late on Monday, locals took to the streets, hurling stones and bottles at Lebanese border checkpoints.
"W00t! W00t! An excuse to take to the streets! It's been weeks!"
On Tuesday, protestors, many carrying sticks and knives, shouted slogans against "the United States and its allies in Lebanon" who arrested Khatib.
"It was the CIA or somebody so we gotta act stupid!"

Terror Networks
Report: Top Bin Laden deputy caught in Pakistan - Ayman al-Zawahr
Top Bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri has been caught in Pakistan, according to a report from the region quoted on Israel Radio Monday. Pakistani forces operating against al Qaida strongholds in the country report capturing the Egyptian national, who was formerly the head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which operated in the past against the Egyptian regime. Earlier Monday, the US commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan Lieutenant-General David Barno told Reuters that there is little evidence of al Qaida fighters still in Afghanistan, and that Pakistan's crackdown on al Qaida-linked operatives has made life harder for fugitives hiding in tribal areas near the Afghan - Pakistani border
Need more confirmation on this one.

We had this up yesterday. Reuters carried a denial from the Paks and it hasn't appeared anywhere else I've seen. Either it's a false alarm, or they've got him and they're holding him in the cooler while he's milked.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Johnny Jihad Appeals for Early Release
The lawyer for an American sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. prison for fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan appealed to President Bush to lessen his sentence after a man in a similar case was freed.
Is Mike Spann done being dead yet?
John Walker Lindh, 23, dubbed the "American Taliban," was captured during the Afghanistan war and was sentenced in 2002 under a plea deal. His lawyer, James Brosnahan, said he had filed an appeal on Tuesday to commute the sentence after a long-held accused enemy combatant, Yaser Hamdi, was scheduled to be freed from the United States to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Hamdi, a U.S. citizen, was also captured in Afghanistan.
Hamdi was also raised in Soddy Arabia. He was an "American" by misplaced courtesy. Johnny Jihad was born and raised here.
"I hope America can find it in her heart to forgive John," Lindh's mother told a news conference. "John has admitted he made a mistake when he went to Afghanistan in June 2001 to fight in the civil war between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance."
I personally hope that he comes down with spavins and galls and suffers from them the entire 20 years he's in jug.

Israeli Troops Enter Northern Gaza
Israeli tanks and troops moved into the northern Gaza Strip Tuesday, firing a number of shells, witnesses said. There were no reports of injuries. More than 30 armored vehicles massed on the border near the Palestinian towns of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lehiya and the army said an operation was planned to try to stop Palestinian militants from firing rockets at nearby Israeli towns. Earlier in the day Palestinian militants fired four home made rockets at the border town of Sderot. There were no injuries. Troops have frequently raided northern Gaza communities to stop the rocket fire, largely to no avail.

Zarqawi using snuff films to make his mark
Recent videos of beheadings by Iraq's most wanted terrorist leader have been growing in sophistication, using animated graphics and editing techniques apparently aimed at embellishing the audio to make a victim's final moments seem more disturbing. It is a sign of the importance that terrorists in Iraq now place on such propaganda efforts. U.S. officials say that the leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, whose group is blamed in the beheading deaths of two Americans last week, seems acutely aware of the impact he and his followers can have through the media, and that they are becoming more adept in how to use it. "They have, obviously, a media element because they make these terrible videos of the hostages, including the executions, and they get that media out to the different outlets," said John Brennan, director of the U.S. Terrorist Threat Integration Center.

Early videos from al-Qaida and like-minded terror groups were grainy and sometimes just thumb-size video boxes that popped up on a computer monitor. But the quality of a video posted on a Web site last week, showing the beheading of U.S. contractor Eugene Armstrong, demonstrates that militant groups now apparently have access to improved technology. In the nine-minute Internet video, the images of Armstrong are captured in greater and more gruesome detail than early videos. Animated graphics are used, including a Quran with an assault rifle standing atop it. The opening sequence also is more elaborate than in earlier videos, including words that fade in and out. A title page says in Arabic: "The Media Division of the Tawhid and Jihad Group presents: The slaying of the first hostage."

2 Pakistani soldiers killed, 4 wounded in Waziristan
The Pakistan military says two soldiers were killed and four wounded when they stepped on two landmines in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The incident happened when the troops were leaving a hilltop in the Shakai valley in South Waziristan. On Monday five soldiers died in an attack on a convoy east of the main town of Wana. Local tribesmen said six civilians were wounded when the military started pounding militant hideouts after the latest incident. However army spokesman, Brigadier Shahjehan, denied there were any such casualties. In Monday's attack, one vehicle of the 60-strong convoy heading from Wana to Tank was destroyed. At least six soldiers were injured in addition to the five deaths.

4 Afghan cops killed, driver beheaded
At least four Afghan policemen were killed and the driver of a former official was beheaded in attacks in the troubled southern province of Zabul, a police official said on Tuesday. Just 12 days before a landmark election that Islamic militants have vowed to disrupt, police clashed with suspected guerrillas from the ousted Taliban in a four-hour gun battle in Nawbahar district, Colonel Jailani Khan said. Four policemen were killed and two wounded, while two insurgents died and two were arrested, he added. Taliban commander Borjan Niazi said seven policemen died in the fighting. He denied there were any Taliban casualties. In Zabul's Shen Gharo district, the driver of a former provincial governor was beheaded and his corpse left by the side of the road late on Monday, Khan said.

Most of the 18 candidates for president have called for the Oct. 9 poll to be delayed until security improves. However, President Hamid Karzai, who is overwhelming favourite to keep his job, has said the vote will take place on schedule.

GSPC kills 6 in ambush
Suspected Islamic rebels killed six members of a civilian self-defence unit in an ambush in western Algeria, security sources said on Tuesday. The attackers believed to belong to the al Qaeda-aligned Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) used explosives during the ambush that took place on Monday evening in the region of Ain Defla, 180 km (112 miles) west of the capital Algiers.

11 Farooqi accomplices jugged
Pakistani security agencies have arrested 11 Islamic militants since killing Amjad Farooqi, the alleged mastermind of bids to kill both President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, an official said Tuesday. The detainees, all Pakistanis, include a suspect in the May 2002 suicide car bomb attack which killed 11 French naval technicians outside Karachi's Sheraton hotel, spokesman for the Sindh provincial government Saluddin Haider said. "All these arrests have been made in connection with the interrogation of the accomplices of Amjad Farooqi," Haider told AFP, referring to two militants who were arrested after the Sunday morning shootout which left Farooqi dead. "We are quite hopeful of breaking this network." Farooqi, 30, had been on the run for over two years but was traced by a mobile phone intercept to a hideout in the rural Sindh town of Nawabshah, where he and his accomplices were surrounded by paramilitaries on Sunday.
Go ahead, dumbass. Spill your source.
He was considered Al-Qaeda's key recruiter and operator in Pakistan. The two accomplices arrested after Sunday's shootout have since told interrogators that Farooqi also plotted a July 30 suicide bomb attack against Aziz as he campaigned near Islamabad. Aziz narrowly escaped but nine people, including his driver, were killed. "The two militants have revealed to interrogators that Farooqi had planned the suicide attack on the prime minister," an official familiar with the interrogation told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Afghan Soldiers, Talibs Killed in Clash
Militants ambushed an Afghan military patrol in a Taliban stronghold Tuesday, sparking a three-hour gunbattle that left four troops and two rebels dead, an Afghan official said. The incident was just the latest in a string of attacks and killings blighting the runup to the country's historic presidential election on Oct. 9. The ambush was laid by about 20 gunmen who opened fire on 30 militia soldiers riding pickup trucks through Nawbahar, a mountainous district of Zabul province, deputy police chief Jailani Khan said. "It was a Taliban ambush," Khan said. "They fought it out for three hours with AK-47s and machine-guns until the enemy retreated into the hills." Two militants were killed and two more captured, he said. Four of the Afghan militia soldiers died.

Hamas Calls on Followers to Vote
Hamas called on its followers Tuesday to vote in upcoming Palestinian local elections, highlighting the militant group's new determination to enter politics and challenge Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's dominance. The call came a day after a Hamas leader was quoted as saying the group plans to contest legislative and presidential elections, which Arafat has promised to hold but has not yet set a date for. The comment by Mahmoud Zahar marked the first time Hamas has made such a commitment. Hamas has previously said it would participate in the first municipal elections to be held under Palestinian rule, scheduled to begin Dec. 9. But until Tuesday, the group had shown minimal interest in the campaign. A strong Hamas campaign could pose a formidable challenge to Arafat. The veteran Palestinian leader announced plans earlier this month to hold the municipal elections in response to widespread discontent over his corruption-plagued government and chaos in the Palestinian areas.

Pakistan Security Groups Arrest Militants
Pakistani security forces have arrested at least 11 suspected Islamic militants in raids across the country since the killing of a key al-Qaida operative over the weekend, an intelligence official said Tuesday. Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said security forces were seeking to "break (the) network" connected to the slain militant, Amjad Hussain Farooqi, who he said had close contacts with al-Qaida leaders and was involved in "almost all major terrorist attacks in the recent years" in Pakistan. Sherpao said those arrested so far linked to Farooqi. He would not say how many suspects had been rounded up or whether they included any major figures. And there was no indication any of those arrested were part of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden's inner circle.

An intelligence official in Karachi, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 11 suspected Pakistani militants have been captured based on information yielded from interrogations of three suspects arrested during the shootout in which Farooqi was killed on Sunday. Officials said at least one of the arrests was in Karachi — a hotbed of militancy in southern Pakistan. The man arrested was said to be a close associate of Farooqi's but was not identified. Two others were arrested in Rawalpindi, a city near the capital, Islamabad.

Iraq-Jordan
American Forces Strike Fallujah
American forces bombed a suspected hide-out used by the militant group of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Fallujah on Tuesday, and the military said its frequent strikes have taken a toll on the leadership of the Jordanian-born terror leader's network. But in a sign of strength, dozens of militants — some waving banners of al-Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group — drove freely through the streets of another central Iraqi city, Samarra, where U.S. and Iraqi commanders had claimed success weeks ago in suppressing the insurgency. The gunmen waved automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, stopping cars and taking music tapes from passengers — giving them tapes with recitations from the Muslim holy book, the Quran, in exchange.

U.S. warplanes struck in Fallujah at about 4 a.m., and there was no immediate word on casualties. Early reports showed that no civilians were in the area when the blast went off, the military said. Intelligence reports indicated that the militants targeted in the strike were "rising" associates of al-Zarqawi and "planning attacks using foreign suicide bombers in vehicles rigged with explosives," the military said. The military said weeks of airstrikes in rebel-held Fallujah have exacted a heavy toll on al-Zarqawi's network and intelligence indicates the al-Qaida-linked group has been forced to reorganize its leadership. Last week, the death of a top deputy to al-Zarqawi, Abu al-Anas al-Shami, was reported slain in a U.S. strike just outside Baghdad, and his father confirmed the death.

#1  "Early reports showed that no civilians were in the area when the blast went off, the military said."

WTop turned this into a catch-all Iraq round-up.

But the ABC "News" version, to keep it's ABB membership in force, followed this quote with:

"Late Monday, U.S. warplanes were spotted over the city and explosions were heard. Residents said they saw a plane firing rockets into the city, but U.S. Marine officers said only illumination rounds were fired.

Dr. Walid Thamer of the Fallujah General Hospital said at least three people were killed and nine wounded in the earlier attack. They arrived at the hospital around 1:00 a.m., he said. The conflicting accounts could not immediately be reconciled."

The Baby Ducks, Puppies, and Kittens department has bodies (or not - the truth is of no consequence in Islam) they needed to blame on the Jarines. ABC ranks right down there with Rather and the CBS Agenda Addicts.

Two Simonas Released
Two Italian female aid workers held hostage in Iraq for the last three weeks have been released. The two women were handed over to the Italian Red Cross in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and are in good health, officials said. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said they were expected to return to Italy later on Tuesday. The two Iraqi aid workers seized with the two women had also been freed, Mr Berlusconi said. He described the release of the two women as a "moment of joy". "The two girls are well and will be able to return to their loved ones tonight," he said at a news conference in Rome. Simona Torretta's sister reacted swiftly on Italian television, expressing her joy at the news her sister had survived her ordeal.

The fate of both aid workers captured the hearts of Italians this month and over the last week itself there has been a rollercoaster of emotions, says the BBC's Guto Harri in Rome. Initial reports suggested they had both been killed, followed by reports, first from Kuwait then from Jordan, suggesting they were alive and well and would be released, our correspondent says. Two French journalists, apparently captured by the same group, are still being held while there is no news of UK hostage Ken Bigley, who has been threatened with beheading.

#2  Great for them; whatever happened, it sure was counterproductive for the hostages takers. According to what I've read, there was something of a national unity around Berlusconi during that time, the acknowledgement of the terrorists having no "liberation struggle" excuse (an anti-iraqi war editor said that between an Iraq ruled by the USA and an Iraq ruled by thugs he gladfully chooses the USA), that they were ennemies of the civilized world,... of course, this will certainly cease now that they are free. Berlusconi 's firmness really has been appreciated, as was Italy's active yet "decent" negociations (a 1 million dollars ransom was most certainly paid), using mostly Jordan's secret services - as opposed to France reaffirming it stands on the arab side, and begging the muslim brotherhood, being supported by the hamas or the hezbollah...-

MNF-I CONDUCT PRECISION STRIKE ON ZARQAWI SITE
On September 28, 2004 at 4:04 a.m., Baghdad time, Multi-National Force-Iraq conducted a precision strike on a confirmed Abu Musab Al Zarqawi terrorist site in southern Fallujah. Several credible intelligence sources confirmed that members of the terrorist group were operating at the site at the time of the strike. Specifically identified at the location were rising AMZ associates. Recent strikes against the AMZ network have changed the leadership structure of the terrorist group causing numerous reorganizations within the group.
They've been reorganized into disseperate body parts.
The same sources reported that the terrorists at this site were planning attacks using foreign suicide bombers in vehicles rigged with explosives against Iraqi citizens and Multi-National forces in Iraq. At this time, it is unknown how many terrorists were killed by this strike. Based on detailed intelligence and analysis, Multi-National forces accurately targeted this terrorist location while protecting the surrounding homes. Intelligence indicated that only Zarqawi operatives and associates were at the site at the time of the strike.

3 Brits join Zarqawi inside Iraq
Three British citizens who travelled to Iraq to fight the coalition forces have joined Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi's terrorist group, currently holding the Liverpool engineer Ken Bigley, a media report claimed today. Quoting a resistance commander, 'The Sunday Times' said the Britons were accepted by followers of Zarqawi, the most ruthless terrorist leader in Iraq, on the recommendation of "clerics abroad". Abu Muawiya, who spent eight months in Zarqawi's Tawhid wal Jihad (TWJ) group, claimed it had attracted scores of fighters from other Arab nations, the paper reported. "Three Muslim British citizens are among a handful of non-Arab foreigners who have joined Zarqawi in his war against the coalition forces," Muawiya was quoted as saying.

Besides the Britons, a number of Taliban and Chechens were said to be in the group which beheaded Bigley's American companions Jack Hensley and Eugene Armstrong last week. The claim followed British Prime Minister Tony Blair's remarks last week that Iraq had become the "crucible of global terrorism". It also came amid concern among Labour party officials that the hostage crisis and the wider conflict could overshadow this week's party conference in Brighton, about 100 km from here.

#2  Well they should just be killed. Any body dumb enough to fall in with an Arab needs to get a Darwin Award.

#3  Also an Uzbek will blend in those regions more easily than a camel jockey. Pakhtuns and Uzbeks are the same central asian stock.
