Mardi Gras or Katrina Stress Syndrome? You Make the Call
I blame Bush...
A Covington woman was attacked Monday morning by a New Orleans man dressed in Carnival garb that she met through the Internet, Covington police said Tuesday. Lawrence Goldstein, 40, 1020 St. Claude Ave., New Orleans, was booked Monday with attempted rape, false imprisonment and possession of nitrous oxide, which is classified a dangerous substance, police said. Sometimes known as laughing gas, the chemical was used by Goldstein in an attempt to lower the victims defenses, authorities said.
What's that big tank?
Ooooh...nothing.

Goldstein called the 24-year-old Covington resident early Monday morning and told her that he had too many guests at his residence and asked if he could sleep at her place, Covington police spokesman Lt. Jack West said.
Ummmmm...okay. Sure. What bad stuff could happen, right?
The woman, who was house-sitting and had a six-month-old baby with her, told him he could come over but only to sleep, West said. Goldstein arrived at the apartment in a purple top hat, a large purple cape and a purple satin shirt, West said. His upper body was covered in pink body paint and glitter, West said.
Most folks might take this as their first hint that...something is amiss.
The victim told police that Goldstein forced her to inhale nitrous oxide and smoke marijuana with him, West said. At that point he became aggressive and attacked her, ripping off some of her clothing, West said. The woman fought off Goldstein's attacks and ran outside, where she was able to call police on a cell phone, West said. The woman left the baby inside as she ran out, but the child was unharmed, he said. The woman's call to police came in at 3:30 a.m.
Unless you're in your own bed, nuthin good happens at 3:30AM...
When officers arrived, they found Goldstein in the residence wearing only trousers and body paint and with a bag full of whips, chains, a sex toy and handcuffs, West said. The officers also discovered a canister the victim said contained nitrous oxide.
I think Larry had come to parrrrrtay...
She told police that they had smoked all of Goldstein's marijuana, West said.
No more weed!? Scram, ya bum!
West said the officer on the scene told him, "I opened the door and this Oompa-Loompa is standing there," referring to the brightly-colored characters from "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
Slap the bracelets on him and read the Oompa-Loompa his rights, Muldoon...
While searching the mans car, they discovered its trunk was packed with hay and contained two hula hoops and another whip, West said.
Oh...well. Maybe he's a lion tamer or...sumthin?
The woman told police she met Goldstein after posting classified ad selling a baby stroller on a Web site. She began chatting online with the man but told police that she did not give him her phone number or address at the time, West said. Police are still investigating how Goldstein obtained the woman's phone number.
My guess? Psychic Oompa-Loompa powers...

#1  When Mardi Gras meets Blue Velvet.

(Lynch's initial idea was to have Frank Booth doing helium for his "Mommy--baby wants blue velvet" thang. I understand it was Dennis Hopper who persuaded him to go with the laughing gas idea.)

You'll get 10 years for the attempted rape Lawrence, but they'll add another 20 for practicing animal husbandry without a license in Louisiana.

Did the police keep them?

'Mafiosi' held in US and Sicily
Dozens of people have been detained by US and Italian authorities targeting an alleged Mafia-run transatlantic drug trafficking operation. The operation, codenamed "Old Bridge," saw arrests in and around New York and the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

More than 50 members of the notorious Gambino family were held by FBI agents in New York City and its northern suburbs, New Jersey and Long Island. Police in Palermo said they hoped to bring in 25 to 30 suspects.

The FBI is said to have tracked suspects day and night, eavesdropping with sophisticated surveillance equipment.

One of those arrested in the raids in the US was Francesco Paolo Augusto Cali, of the New York Gambino family, known as "Franky Boy". He is allegedly the "ambassador" in the US of the Sicilian Mafia, the Cosa Nostra, tasked with improving relations between the various families.

Video: Minnesota toe sucker gets five years probation
WCCO) A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to five years of probation after police say he robbed a woman of her keys and cell phone then took off her shoes and licked her toes.

On Wednesday, Carlton Jermaine Davis, 26, was sentenced in Ramsey County Court to probation and evaluation for the next five years. According to the sentence, if Davis doesn't complete probation he will have to serve 21 months in prison.

According to the criminal complaint, Davis approached a woman who was leaving work around 1 a.m. last September. He said to her, in a very demanding voice, "put your cell phone and purse inside the bag". The complaint said that the 24-year-old woman was frightened so she complied. After giving Davis her belongings he demanded she take her shoes off. She did and Davis responded "Now I'm going to suck your feet".

Small Romanian Town Gets Rich Through eBay Scams
DRAGASANI, Romania — Hundreds of people in the poor Romanian town of Dragasani have grown rich by conning eBay online auction customers with deals that seem too good to be true — and often are. The scammers have even put the new town hall up for sale on eBay, the mayor admitted last week. "I mean, who would want it?" he asked.

Despite growing concern about online frauds, the European Union has poured $300,000 into computer training courses in Dragasani over the past three years in "special recognition" of its information-technology skills.

"I heard about another offer on eBay selling a MiG fighter jet. There was a photo and a very good price as the customer was only being asked to pay for the fuel to fly it. One guy paid $2,000!" the mayor, Gheorghe Iordache, exclaimed. "The victims are mainly Americans because they are on the Internet most often and they're naive," he added. "I've heard about local guys who have suddenly bought apartments in Bucharest, Germany, Holland, but haven't a job. Others have BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches and they don't work. So where do they get the money from?"

With few local jobs available in this industrial town in Romania's Valcea wine-growing region, defrauding eBay customers has became a popular career path for many of Dragasani's young people. A classic scam is the "second chance auction," in which fraudsters contact an eBay user who has just missed out on an item, offering them another chance to buy it outside eBay rules. The scammers persuade their victims to purchase the fictitious items using payment methods that do not allow them to recover the money.

Other frauds include hacking into eBay accounts and stealing an identity to make fake offers. Local police say thousands of victims have been defrauded by the scammers. The biggest case involved the sum of $300,000.

Mihai Popescu, 29, is serving a three-year jail sentence for his link to one such scam. He was lured into online fraud when he was unemployed. Last week his parents protested that he had been made a scapegoat after playing a minor role in the crime, in which his identity card was used to pick up a cash payment from a victim. "He is only 5 percent guilty. He doesn't even speak English," said his father Stefan.

According to Virgil Spiridon, chief of the national cyber-crime unit, there were 752 arrests and 84 convictions last year, many of them in cases where Romanians posed as Britons. A spokesman for eBay said it had "invested millions" in fighting fraud in Romania.

Quote of the day
Samizdata

I'm seriously considering pitching a detective novel, about the hunt for a serial killer. The unique selling point will be that as the detective homes in on the killer, he gradually comes to sympathize with him, and ends up questioning whether he should actually collar the murderer ... because the victims are all spammers.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Severed ears, fingers sent to government
SEVERED ears and fingers have been sent in packages to three high-ranking government officials in Kyrgyzstan.

The body parts were sent to the presidential administration chief, the director of the competition monitoring agency and a member of the electoral commission, opposition leader Omurbek Tekebayev told the Delo N newspaper. "It is a warning," Mr Tekebayev said. "The finger means: 'Don't put your hands where they don't belong'. It is surely motivated by a shift in influence within politics and the economy. The ear means be obedient."

Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian former Soviet republic, has been rocked by waves of political unrest since a popular revolt in March 2005 which toppled former president Askar Akayev and brought President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to power.

True. The problem, she explained, was that she was sick in New York City and was unable to get back across the Hudson River to the polls in Jersey City.

Tribal politician expelled for using father's name instead of mother's
An Indian politician has been stripped of his status as a tribesman and may be barred from contesting elections because he took his father's surname.

Leaders of the Khasi tribe in the north-east Indian state of Meghalaya have told Waibha Kyndiah that he has "ceased" to be a Khasi. The Khasis are a matrilineal society and their legal code does not recognise anyone who uses a paternal surname. Mr Kyndiah was planning to contest an assembly seat reserved for tribes. The Khasis are one of the three leading tribes in Meghalaya.

Mr Kyndiah was going to contest state assembly elections on 3 March from Nongkrem constituency, which is reserved for tribal representatives.

Olde Tyme Religion
About HijabGirl™
From a GoogleAd in my gmail...
Who is she?
HijabGirl™ is an American born Muslim woman whose real identity remains hidden. Post 9/11, HijabGirl™ witnessed an alarming growth in prejudice against Muslims in North America. In particular, Muslim sisters in hijab were an easily identifiable target. As a result, they had to endure uncomfortable stares and mumbled anti-Muslim comments on a regular basis. In worse cases, they have been subjected to verbal and physical attacks. This unacceptable level of prejudice and its impact on sisters prompted HijabGirl™ to take action.

What is her mission?
HijabGirl's mission is to serve her sisters in four ways:
1. By establishing an online forum where sisters can share their experiences and discuss issues relating to hijab. This online forum will be established in the coming months inshaAllah, and is for sisters only. HijabGirl™ will notify you of the forum launch by e-mail. Please enter your e-mail address in the subscription box above.
2. By making hijabs more affordable and increasing the variety on offer. By December 2007, HijabGirl™ intends to offer over 10,000 high quality hijabs at prices as low as $2.95.
3. By supporting and helping sisters who want to wear the hijab but are finding it difficult to take this step.
4. By presenting the truth about Islam to non-Muslims by demonstrating, through our behavior, that Islam is a religion of peace.

Why are some trying to stop her?
Unfortunately, some people do not want to live in a multi-cultural world. They are determined to maintain their level of ignorance and are eager to eliminate any lifestyle that doesn't correspond with their world view. Anti-hijab regimes, bigots, and many others fall into this category.

How can you help?
You can help in four ways:
1. HijabGirl™ is determined to make hijabs more affordable. The more hijabs you buy, the more power she has to negotiate lower prices from hijab suppliers passing on those savings to you.
2. Spread the word. Tell all the sisters you know about www.HijabGirl.com. The forum will be launched soon. This forum is for the sisters, by the sisters. Let's get every sister we know on this forum sharing their experiences, offering advice, and supporting one another.
3. Send HijabGirl™ links about hijab-related articles. HijabGirl™ will be developing a page that contains links to articles or news concerning the hijab.
4. Subscribe to HijabGirl's monthly newsletter. Every month HijabGirl™ udertakes mission to source hijabs from suppliers around the world, shipping them to the USA and offering them to you at the lowest prices possible. She sends a monthly newsletter to you informing you of her latest mission. Enter your e-mail address in the subscription box above so HijabGirl™ can send you this monthly newsletter.

Acknowledgements
HijabGirl™ would like to thank the restaurants of Qasr Al-Sonouber and Trio in Amman, Jordan for permitting use of their premises for photo shooting purposes.

Southeast Asia
Thai diners show appetite for rat
Thai fast food sellers are enjoying a boom in rat sales, as people learn to love the taste of the rodent. While rat has long been eaten in Thailand's poorer northern regions, a growing number of the country's roadside vendors are now serving it up. The rats are drowned and sold uncooked or ready to eat, with happy customers purchasing rat meat for as much as 150 baht ($4.82; £2.30) a kilogram.

"It's better than chicken," one customer told the AP news agency.

"It all depends what you like, but it's a normal meat like any other," added Thongyu Roruchit. ne rat seller, Sala Prompim, said that the hip and liver were the best cuts. "It's tastier than other meats - nothing can compete with rat," he added. Mr Prompim said he only used rats caught from rice fields, and not those found in towns or cities. "They are definitely clean," he said.

The animals are killed by drowning, before being skinned ready for cooking - poached, fried, grilled or baked. Mr Prompim says he sells as much as 100kg of rat meat on some days.

#6  I once read a book by someone who spent years in the NORK gulag where people are basically starved to death. He figured out how to catch and cook rats - 30 or 40 a day - and as a result got fat. The guards were so amazed at this they thought he had magical powers and he survived to defect to the South.

#10  Drowning?

If they're like any other animal, methods of death which bleed them out will produce a better tasting product.

#12  $4.82 a kilogram

I'll stick to hamburger, where the chance of rat meat is only 50/50.

#14  Much as I hate to spoil a good story, but these are not rat Rats. They are called Pig Rats, and are in fact Bandicoots, a type of marsupial. No real difference from the Kangaroo meat on sale in my local grocery store.
