Man opens fire outside California church
  • Shooter's intended victim was ex-girlfriend, reports KTLA
  • Three people wounded, one of them critically, police say
  • Bystanders tackle man and hold him until police arrive
  • The motive for the attack not immediately known, official says

#1  The suspect was reloading his weapon when he was tackled by several witnesses who were volunteers at the festival. The shooter put up a fight, struggling and taunting people as they were trying to subdue him.

Wolves, not sheep. I find it puzzling, though, that he went after his ex-girlfriend when there was already a restraining order against him about his wife, son and that church.

#2  Tackling the guy while he was reloading was admirable, and presumably the less risky of the available alternatives. All are extremely fortunate this episode ended the way it did. I would have felt better tackling him with a magazine of .45 cal than with my body though.

#4  CNN buried the name of the church in the second-to-last paragraph, and never mentioned that it was a Catholic parish.

The LA Times coverage is far more detailed and interesting.

Saudi wants divorce after husband lifts her veil
A 50-year-old Saudi woman asked for divorce after her husband lifted her face veil while she was sleeping, local press reported.

For 30 years, the wife said she never showed her face to her husband in conformity with the tradition of her native village near the south western Saudi city of Khamis Mushayt.

"After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake," the wife told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, after she left the house in total disbelief.

She said the husband apologized and promised never to do it again.

This is not the first case of husbands who have not seen their wives' faces in decades.

In the past Al Arabiya has reported the case of Ali al-Qahtani, whose wife had been wearing the face veil for the entire ten years of their marrage. When he tried to take it off, she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again.

Hassan Al-Atibi threatened to marry another woman if his wife didn't show him her face. The woman nominated one of her friends who doesn't observe this tradition as a possible new wife for him, saying this would be better than her showing her face.

And neither the husband or children of Om Rabea al-Gahdaray, 70, have ever seen her face. Al-Gahdaray says it is a family tradition, also followed by mother and sisters, which her husband accepted and never tried to change.

When asked how she could have kids without her husband ever seeing her face, she replied: "Marriage is about love, not faces."

The practice of always remaining veiled, even in front of your husband, is not an Islamic practice but a very old tradition practiced by a minority of people in Gulf countries.

#4  So once again with the snark about a woman's appearance .... sigh

I have no interest in defending face veils. That said, guys -- it's about RESPECT not appearance. In her culture -- in her tribe's archaic culture -- what her husband did was deeply disrespectful. You and I think that tribe's customs are ridiculous. But given that they are HER customs, and he knew it, he dissed her and she had a right to be pissed.
    Posted by: lotp || 05/18/2008 12:56 Comments || Top||

#5  There's another angle to this, typically Arab in its convolution.

On the surface this story says "respect old customs about veiling". But notice that the woman is described as threatening to divorce the guy - giving her equal rights under divorce law, which Saudi women have more or less had in theory but not in practice.

So the writer is subtly promoting more autonomy and political standing for Saudi women -- and makes it palatable by presenting it as a defense of old, very conservative traditions. (Which the author also notes are "not Islamic".)

Yup - that's Arab to the core, that article.
    Posted by: lotp || 05/18/2008 13:04 Comments || Top||

#6  What leverage would she have? Men get sole custody of the children. And, I kid you not, if a man does the 3-talaq declaration, and seizes the children, he OWNS his divorcee's breast milk. Sounds perverse but the woman is required to deliver same, notwithstanding the condition of the divorce.

I find that we-have-to-respect-other-cultures line, rather stupid. I respect cannibal cultures more than do I respect Arab beliefs, rites and traditions.

There are others, some of them posted at the Burg. There's a big fight coming among the Saudis and in typical Arab fashion it's being waged through 3rd degree indirection right now.

    Europe
Rent-a-husband business boom - Czech Republic
During the communist years Czechs prided themselves on their skills at DIY and improvisation. Czechs men were able to fix anything around the house, invent whatever gadget was not available on the market and literally turn an old washing machine into a functional lawn-mower. It was part of providing for one’s family.

Now times have changed. People are spending more hours at work, they are better paid and are gradually recognizing the commonsense of letting professionals do the more complicated house maintenance tasks –such as fixing the plumbing, painting the house or changing the locks. In line with this new trend a new profession has emerged – the “husband-for-rent”. Of course, there is the locksmith, house-painter and plumber – but what if you need a little bit of each. In other words if you need a DIY whiz who will take care of it all in the course of one afternoon while your husband is out making piles of money and no longer has time for such things? Or, indeed, if you yourself are making piles of money and don’t want a husband.

The “husband-for-rent” will take care of it all and you don’t even need to keep him supplied with cold beer. Although the first husband-for-rent who appeared on the Czech scene caused much hilarity and ribald jokes the rent-a-husband business is booming. Czech women are now renting husbands to hang a painting or mow the lawn. Husbands-for-rent are willing to work in the evenings and on weekends when the real husbands are away on business trips and their wives are faced with a problem. Of course, in Japan they are constructing robots for that kind of thing. But Czech women say this arrangement suits them beautifully. And evil tongues say the number of dripping taps and broken washing machines has doubled.

    Sweden: Winter's return causes confusion
Heavy snow falls were seen in many parts of northern Sweden on Saturday as winter made a comeback. Forecasts indicate however that this should be the last snow of the season.

The snow falls caused widespread power cuts.

"I am just heading out to shovel the snow, it's feels a little tough. I measured this morning and 24 centimetres of snow had fallen during the morning," said Evelyn Nykvist in Sörskog in Dalarna to news agency TT.

The snow falls covered much of Dalarna, inner Hälsingland, Härjedalen and up towards Jämtland and the ski resort of Åre. Swedish meteorological agency SMHI reported that 14-15 centimetres of snow fell in Leksand, Malung and Rättvik in Dalarna.

"It has snowed quite a lot, as far south as parts of Värmland. Further south than that the snow turns into slush," said SMHI meteorologist Sten Laurin.

Many residents in the affected areas have suffered confusion in May as one day they cycle to work and the next have to rummage around in their attics to dig out winter clothes, hats and gloves.

Svealand (the central region of the three regions that makes up Sweden) has not seen snow in May since 2005. Forecasts indicate that this will be the last of the season's snow.

Theres was some chaos on the roads as many motorists had already switched to summer tyres. Several cars slid off roads in the Falun-Borlänge area.

"But there have not been any accident involving injuries to people," said Christer Nelefelt at Dalarna police.

Several thousand households were without electricity in parts of Svealand as the heavy, wet snow weighed down power lines on Saturday morning. Problems persisted for many into the afternoon.

2 more robbers burnt in vigilante action
A mob beat up and burnt two fleeing robbers, leaving one of them dead on Saturday, while three fleeing robbers were treated in the same way on Wednesday, police officials said.

The men – apparently in their 20s – robbed a passenger bus near the Remedial Hospital, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Khalid Rafiq said, who was in plainclothes and on patrol with two other policemen when he heard the bus passengers screaming.

The ASI said the fleeing men surrendered and handed their guns over to the police, but a crowd began to beat them. He said the police tried to intervene but they were beaten up as well, and retreated to call for backup. A police contingent arrived at the scene in about five minutes and tried to stop the mob, who threw petrol on the robbers and burnt them. “We assured them that justice will be done but they wanted to kill us too,” Rafiq said. He said the policemen’s own clothes were burnt trying to save the men.

    Some citizens filmed the incident.

The men were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and were referred to the burns ward at Civil Hospital in Karachi. One of them, identified as Danish, died and the other, Imran, is under treatment. The injured men, from Orangi Town, received 50 percent burns.

Sherry takes notice of fresh polio case in Sindh
In-charge Health Minister Sherry Rehman has taken notice of yet another polio case in Sindh reported this week, bringing the number of polio-affected children to eight, said a press release issued on Saturday.

Expressing concern over the reports, she directed the Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) manager to immediately look into the issue and ensure effective implementation of the programme.

A team, comprising EPI National Programme Manager Dr HB Memon, Additional Health Secretary Imtiaz Elahi, World Health Organisation (WHO) representative to Pakistan Dr Khalif Bile Mohamud and Special Advisor to the WHO regional director Dr Wahdan, is flying to Karachi tomorrow (Monday) to probe into the matter.

The team will help implement experts’ recommendation on the issue. “Rise in polio cases is alarming, as there is resistance to immunisation campaign in Sindh,” Rehman said.

The minister said it was noted that all fresh polio-affected children were not administered polio vaccine sufficiently.
