Swine Flu Facts
The two primary sources of information about the swine flu for you ought to be the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. There are a great many people working around the clock on the swine flu epidemic at both places. but I suspect that the website updaters are daytime employees. The frequency of updates at both sites is limited.

The media is full of reports of "confirmed" cases. Take those with a grain of salt. Local testing in the U.S. is followed by testing at the CDC. Until the CDC says so, the cases are "probable". Some cases are turning out to be the seasonal flu.

We can anticipate additional cases in the United States and worldwide. Influenza can take from 1-7 days to develop after exposure, with most cases taking 2-3 days. The primary killer is not the flu itself, but pneumonia. In seasonal influenza the young, elderly and immuno-compromised are at highest risk of death.

#1  All of the U.S. cases to date have been mild.

Not any more. Fatality reported from Texas this morning.

#2  That one doesn't really count. A Mexican infant brought across the border for treatment.

Mortal cases of the swine flu are showing signs of being limited to Mexico, though profiling with the cytokine storm effect.

However, influenza outbreaks in Mexico are very rare, because of the heat, humidity, and northern deserts acting as a barrier to the US. This means that Mexicans have far less resistance to influenza than do Americans.

The cytokine storm effect happens in response to new, or significantly different influenza. So it is relative to the individual, not the disease.

Ironically, this swine flu may eventually save hundreds of thousands of lives, because it is the perfect "training exercise" to prepare for the H5N1 avian flu.

The swine flu is a firecracker compared to the nuclear weapon of avian flu.

#3  Wasn't the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak of the H1N1 "swine flu" strain?

I agree, it's not nearly as bad as the asian bird flu one, but it's apparent contagious characteristics are frightening.

#4  The swine flu is a firecracker compared to the nuclear weapon of avian flu.

This is a never before seen virus has been sequenced and is avian/swine/human type A. That being said, many Americans were encouraged to get a flu shot last fall, with the susceptible students being the typically healthy category not advised to get one. We are probably more resistant to it from past infections, etc.

#5  Moose, while the cause of cytokine storms is not known for certain, I think the cytokine storm is an immune system response when the individual has been infected by a similar influenza strain.

Which is why waves 2 and 3 were much worse in 1918. Also this is known to be the case with dengue another viral disease.

Also note the cytokine storm / hemmorhagic form of dengue from infection by multiple strains is the reason why there is no vaccine for dengue. Attempts at creating vaccines causes the hemmorhagic form in the same way as previous infection by a different strain.

Which is why I will not get any vaccine offered.

#6  Somewhat related, or maybe not - on one of the science oriented cable channels there was a program about how new historical/archaeological research is showing that the evil Spanish Conquistadors were probably not responsible for a wave of illness that wiped out most of the Aztec population in the decades following the arrival of the Spanish. I forget what the disease was, maybe hantavirus, but it was locally spawned. This may force a revision of the Guns, Germs, Steel type theories.

Protect yourself from swine flu with the ultimate body cleanse!
This nutter says a lot more about Huffasnuffaguffalus than she does about swine flu. Hat tip Aetiology.

The swine flu is very unfortunately upon us, and if you're like many, you're asking yourself what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones. Some very standard things apply:

1) Stay home as much as possible.

#1  Do we cleanse first and then realign our chakras? Or the other way 'round? I keep forgetting.

On a more serious note, I'm a bit freaked out by all the attention these types pay to vague and ominous "toxins" in the system, and the fixation with pooping. Poop poop poop.

Dude, we all poop.

Currently there's a teevee ad that is a real head-scratcher. It's for some sort of intestinal tonic that features an animated colon being invaded by apparently un-named and unknowable "unwanted substances", played by icky green balls that implant themselves in divots in the walls of your Barney-purple intestine. Then the happy yellow glowing Balls o' Health sweep in and fill the holes and keep the icky green balls at bay...I guess the icky green balls get flushed into the reservoir so they can pester your neighbor's pooper.

"Unwanted substances." Feh.

#3  I would just like to know exactly what 1918 flu vaccine she's talking about, since if memory serves me correctly, there wasn't ANY flu vaccine until after WW2.

Home Front: Politix
Obama's Ratings Won't Last - In Ancient Rome a slave would whisper memor vos es letalis
When the Obama administration crashes and burns, with approval ratings that fall through the floor, political scientists can trace its demise to its first hundred days. While Americans are careful not to consign a presidency they desperately need to succeed to the dustbin of history, the fact is that this president has moved - on issue after issue - in precisely the opposite direction of what the people want him to do.

Right now, Obama's ratings must be pleasing to his eye. Voters like him and his wife immensely and approve of his activism in the face of the economic crisis. While polls show big doubts about what he is doing, the overwhelming sense is to let him have his way and pray that it works.

But beneath this superficial support, Obama's specific policies run afoul of the very deeply felt convictions of American voters. For example, the most recent Rasmussen Poll asked voters if they wanted an economic system of complete free enterprise or preferred more government involvement in managing the economy. By 77-19, they voted against a government role, up seven points from last month.

And in the Fox News poll - the very same survey that gave Obama a 62 percent approval rating and reported that 68 percent of voters are "satisfied" with his first hundred days - voters, by 50-38, supported a smaller government that offered fewer services over a larger government that provided more.

By 42-8, the Fox News poll (conducted on April 22-23) found that voters felt Obama had expanded government rather than contracted it (42 percent said it was the same size) and, by 46-30, reported believing that big government was more of a danger to the nation than big business. (By 50-23, they said Obama felt big business was more dangerous.)

By 62-20, they said government spending, under Obama, was "out of control."

So if voters differ so fundamentally with the president on the very essence of his program, why do they accord him high ratings? They are like the recently married bride who took her vows 100 days ago. It would be a disaster for her life if she decides that she really doesn't like her husband. But she keeps noticing things about him that she can't stand. It will be a while before she walks out the door or even comes to terms with her own doubts, but it is probably inevitable that she will.

For Americans to conclude that they disapprove of their president in the midst of an earth-shaking crisis is very difficult. But as Obama's daily line moves from "I inherited this mess" to "There are faint signs of light," the clock starts ticking. If there is no recovery for the next six months - and I don't think there will be - Obama will inevitably become part of the problem, not part of the solution.

And then will come his heavy lifting. He has yet to raise taxes, regiment healthcare or provide amnesty for illegal immigrants. He hasn't closed down the car companies he now runs and he has not yet forced a 50 percent hike in utility bills with his cap-and-trade legislation. These are all the goodies he has in store for us all.

Obama's very activism these days arrogates to himself the blame for the success or failure of his policies. Their outcome will determine his outcome, and there is no way it will be positive.

Why?

• You can't borrow as much as he will need to without raising interest rates that hurt the economy;

• The massive amount of spending will trigger runaway inflation once the economy starts to recover;

• His overhaul of the tax code (still in the planning phases) and his intervention in corporate management will create such business uncertainty that nobody will invest in anything until they see the lay of the land;

• His bank program is designed to help banks, but not to catalyze consumer lending. And his proposal for securitization of consumer loans won't work and is just what got us into this situation.

So Mr. Obama should enjoy his poll numbers while he may.

India-Pakistan
Talibanization of Pakistan: Realizing the Dreams of Founding Fathers
By M. A. Khan
As inescapable Talibanization of entire Pakistan occurs at a rapid pace, umpteen times have the so-called progressive Muslim intellectuals expressed their nostalgia in recent times as to how the Taliban are destroying the dreams of Pakistans founding fathers, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah et al., who had 'allegedly dreamt of an all-inclusive secular state.

For example, to show Jinnahs dream for truly secular Pakistan, these intellectuals, adept at cherry-picking, would invariably quote him:

"You will find that in course of time Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the State."

With due respect to their sincere concern that Pakistan is poised to regress into middle-age barbarism with rapid Talibanization (a trend expanding globally), I must point out that these so-called progressive, liberal Muslim intellectuals--who are either half-educated or blatantly dishonest--are of little help in the battle against obscurantist Islamists. When the helm of progressive intellectualism of a nation lies in their hands, it can only regress into where Pakistan is headed.

When Muslim societies face mortal dangers from the violent and regressive Islamists globally, what we need is a thoroughly knowledgeable and ruthlessly honest progressive intelligentsia, if we at all hope for deliverance from this menace. Dishonesty and lies never serve any noble cause, neither is ignorance of any help. We may probably learn from the book of the Taliban, who have an Islamic agenda solidly grounded on the Quran and Sunnah (prophetic traditions) and they are resolutely honest and unequivocal about it. And their success amongst the intended audience is glaringly visible.

The above quote, showing Jinnahs purportedly secular ideals, was made in a speech on 11 August 1947 after the creation of Pakistan was formalized and Jinnah was elected President of independent Pakistan. It was obviously intended for consumption of the internationals community, whose recognition, support and aid was now a necessity for him. Jinnahs secularism must, instead, be read in his statements in the course of his campaign for creating Pakistan. ...
The crux of the speech was the incompatibility of Islamic ideals with secular democracy: Iqbal fear that Islam in united secular India would become a personal creed divorced from political power--an abomination existing in the secular West.

While this statement leaves Jinnhas allegedly lofty secular ideals bear, concerning the intended polity of the Pakistani state, listening to his mentor Muhammad Iqbals 'Presidential Speech at the All India Muslim League Meet at Allahabad in 1930, the linchpin of the Pakistan movement, would be helpful. The crux of the speech was the incompatibility of Islamic ideals with secular democracy: Iqbal fear that Islam in united secular India would become a personal creed divorced from political power--an abomination existing in the secular West. He said,

"The proposition that religion is a private individual experience is not surprising at the lips of a European...The nature of the Prophets religious experience, as disclosed in the Quran, is, however, totally different."

He, thereafter, went on to expound the problems Muslim society of India was facing:

"Religious ideal of Islam is, therefore, organically related to the social order which it has created. The rejection of the one will eventually involve the rejection of the other. Therefore, the construction of a polity on national lines (i.e. united secular India), if it means a displacement of the Islamic solidarity, is simply unthinkable to a Muslim. It is a matter which at the present moment concerns the Muslims of India."

Iqbal followed up by floating the 'Two Nation Theory:

"I would like to see the Punjab, North-West Frontier Province, Sindh and Baluchistan amalgamated into a single state."

Iqbal strengthened this campaign of a separate Muslim homeland until his death (1938), and passed it onto Jinnah, who galvanized its realization creating Pakistan in 1947 at the immense cost in human life and sufferings.

Moreover, "Pakistan" means "land of the pure". In Islam, non-Muslims are filthy, impure (Quran 9:28). So the name "Pakistan" was carefully chosen to make it exclusively an abode of a pure people, Muslims--completely disconnected from the filthy non-Muslims. And Jinnahs tool to create this pure, organically Islamic, state was "Jihad" or holy war: he tried to emulate Prophet Muhammads model of Jihad that he had applied to create the first Islamic State in Arabia by slaughter, expulsion, enslavement and forced conversion of the infidels en masse.

The Direct Action rally in Calcutta on 16 August 1946, which inaugurated Jinnahs campaign for creating Pakistan, was a "Jihad". The date chosen was the 18th day of Ramadan, coinciding with the day of the Prophets stunning victory at the epoch-making war of Badr. Secret pamphlets, circulated amongst Muslims (also read out in mosque sermons) by the Muslim League Party of Jinnah, read:

"Muslims must remember that it was in Ramzam that the Quran was revealed. It was in Ramzan that the permission for Jehad was granted. It was in Ramzam that the battle of Badr, the first open conflict between Islam and Heathenism [i.e., idolatry, which equates Hinduism] was fought and won by 313 Muslims; and again it was in Ramzan that 10,000 under the Holy Prophet conquered Mecca and established the kingdom of Heaven and the commonwealth of Islam in Arabia. Muslim League is fortunate that it is starting its action in this holy month.

By the grace of God, we are ten cores [100 millions] in India but through our bad luck we have become slaves of the Hindus and the British. We are starting a Jehad in Your Name in this very month of Ramzan. Pray make us strong in body and mind--give Your helping hand in all out actions--make us victorious over the Kafers [i.e. enemy of Allah, e.g. Hindus]--enable us to establish the Kingdom of Islam in India and make proper sacrifices for this Jehad--by the grace of God may we build up in India the greatest Islamic kingdom in the world."

Muslims in their Direct Action Jihad at Calcutta unleashed--with the connivance of the police directed by the Muslim League government in power--brutal massacre, pillage, plunder, rape and arson of the Hindus and Sikhs. After suffering one-and-a-half days of brutal savagery, the Hindus and Sikhs hit back, outnumbering Muslim the rioters and paying back in like manners. Five days of continued violence racked up some 5,000 dead-bodies with some 43% Muslim casualties in Calcutta, where Muslims constituted one-third of the population.

The Direct Action also ignited, over following months, violence, often of much greater horror and atrocity, in Muslim-dominated parts of India (except the Bihar riot after the Calcutta and Noakhali riots), which later became Pakistan. The purpose was to cleanse those areas of Hindus, Sikhs and other non-Muslims, either by mass-slaughter, expulsion, forced conversion, and even enslavement through abductions. In Noakhali riots (Oct. 1946), 95% of the estimated 400,000 Hindus were converted to Islam on the pain of death.

While Muslims continued incessant butchery of the infidels in one part or another, Hindus and Sikhs, when realized that the creation of Pakistan was inevitable, initiated a counterattack in early August 1947 on the backdrop of continued and recently intensified violence against their coreligionists in todays Pakistan.

The Jihad that Jinnah ignited succeeded in achieving its intended goal, the creation of Pakistan, albeit at the cost of up to two million lives (roughly equal on both sides). Hindus and Sikhs--likely a few million--were forcibly converted to Islam, and tens of thousand of predominantly Hindu and Sikh women were raped and a similar number were enslaved through abduction and married to Muslim thugs. Some twenty million people were forced to cross borders leaving their homes and belongings behind.

While Jinnahs Jihad campaign to create a pure land for Muslims, devoid of the filthy infidels, achieved tremendous success, the job remained unfinished because of the dogged refusal of Hindus and Sikhs to leave their ancestral homes or convert to Islam. The purification of Pakistan, to be achieved sooner and later, continued and is nearly done. Hindu population in todays Pakistan has fallen to less a percent from some 10% in 1947. Some 11 million Hindus have been driven out from Bangladesh alone after 1947, reducing the Hindu population from 25-30% to some 10% today.

Obviously, what the Taliban, fast engulfing Pakistan, is going to bring to this nation is the completion of Iqbals and Jinnahs dream, to make it a "pure land" for Muslims, where Islamic law would be the heart of its polity.

Much has been said of Jinnahs lack of Islamic credentials: like, he was secular and hardly a Muslim, who loved pork and alcohol etc. It may be true. He may have even wanted a truly secular state, but that dream lied only in his heart. The common Muslims, who soldiered his mission with utmost barbarity, directed by his Muslim League Party, heard only what Iqbal and Jinnah spelled out clear and loud. It is immaterial what lied in the heart of a couple of hypocritical Muslims; it matters what the common Muslim, who propelled the cause, were told and aspired.
Pakistanis have been fooled for too long by Jinnah to begin with, depriving them of a truly Islamic state. Thanks to the Taliban, they are about to realize their 'dream state, for which they relentlessly fought and sacrificed immensely.
Pakistanis have been fooled for too long by Jinnah to begin with, depriving them of a truly Islamic state. Thanks to the Taliban, they are about to realize their 'dream state, for which they relentlessly fought and sacrificed immensely. On this, the words of Qazi Hussain Ahmad, the ever-honest leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, is most instructive:

"Complete Islamisation of Pakistan has been the genuine and long-standing demand of the overwhelming majority of Pakistanis. Not only that, it is also the appropriate answer to the lurking fears of Talibanisation, growing rapidly with every passing day, as a natural response to the suppression of this public demand at the state level."

Like Bob Marley sang, "...you cant fool all the people all the time."

M. A. Khans recent book, Islamic Jihad: A Legacy of Forced Conversion, Imperialism and Slavery, details the events surrounding the creation of Pakistan.

AQ Khan on History and Present Politics
Random thoughts
By A Q Khan

Most Pakistanis believed that the American elections were going to be a panacea for all our ills, that as soon as Obama entered the White House, things would change and the drone attacks would cease. But facts show that our politicians misjudged the situation. There was a drone attack in the tribal areas the very day President Obama took oath. Since then the frequency and intensity of these attacks have increased and their range has been extended.

In a recent speech in Ankara, President Obama categorically stated that the US was not against Islam. In other words, though he could do nothing against a religion or an ideology, he could still continue to have innocent Muslim men, women and children killed in various parts of the world. In short, only the outer colour has changed, the content is the same.

As the United Nations was (is) not the independent body it claims to be and always acts in accordance with the wishes of the USA, the UK and other Western countries, a resolution was passed soon after the UN's establishment to create the State of Israel on land owned and inhabited by Palestinian Muslims and Christians. More than 50 years have passed since then during which time thousand upon thousand of Palestinians have been massacred and their land usurped. The Americans, the British and the French never allow any resolution to be passed against Israeli atrocities, forcible occupation of land and forceful deportation of its people.

Recent statements by the US have revealed that expenditures on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for this year will amount to $ 83 billion. Look at the economic situation of the USA and note the bankruptcy of many American institutions. See also how many families have been forced to live in small tents out in the open due to this economic situation and the foreclosure of bank loans on their property. Imagine if that amount of money had been spent on the American poor.

As for Pakistan, Afghanistan or any other country posing a threat to American security, one clear-cut warning from the USA that any act of aggression would result in that country's total and immediate annihilation would be sufficient deterrent. However, before any such retaliatory action is undertaken, acts of aggression from the accused should be unequivocally proven, the culprit(s) identified, the facts laid before a neutral UN and their concurrence obtained. Mischievous retribution based on blatant lies, as we saw in the cases of Iraq and Afghanistan by President Bush, Prime Minister Blair and their cronies, should not be tolerated.

If the US continues to aggressively interfere in the affairs of other countries, it will sooner or later have to bear the consequences, to say nothing of the hatred against it that this behaviour causes. In the same way, as a person never expects accidents or misfortune to befall him/her, so too the Americans think that nothing can happen to them because they are the world's only superpower. But God's hand works in mysterious ways. How often do we not see racing-car drivers die in car accidents and expert swimmers drown? We have recent examples of people starving who previously had abundant food and in whose mind the thought of starvation or begging for a bowl of rice had never entered.

Although, like most religions, Christianity preaches love, brotherhood and turning the other cheek, what is practiced in daily life is something different. History has shown Christians to have often been unbelievably cruel, repressive, racist and genocidal, perpetrating the murders of millions of innocent people. Cases in point are the slaughter of Red Indians and Latin Americans by colonists, Muslims in Spain and the Philippines by the Spaniards, the Bosnians by the Serbs, the Vietnamese and the Koreans by the Americans, the Palestinians by the Israelis, the Africans in South Africa and the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan. Although the Israelis are not Christians, they would not be able to continue their aggression against the Palestinians without the tacit agreement of other Western countries, the USA in particular.

Islamic history also has some examples of violence, but there are many instances of humanitarian treatment meted out to defeated non-Muslims. For example, after their conquest the Crusaders massacred thousands of Muslims in Al-Aqsa Mosque. Many authentic history books have mentioned pools of blood in the mosque so deep that the hooves of the Crusaders' horses were covered in it. No single Muslim was spared.

Contrary to this, Saladin, after retaking the mosque, freed all elderly men and women prisoners and let them return to Europe. Young soldiers were allowed their freedom upon payment of a ransom. Those who could not pay for themselves were secretly paid for by Saladin Ayubi's brother, who secured their release and facilitated their safe return to Europe with foodstuff. Had Muslims followed Western colonialist trends, the whole of Spain, India and the East European countries would have become Muslim-majority countries. But Muslims followed the edict of live and let live and, with very few exceptions, did not forcibly convert or kill off the people they conquered.

Considering their own past history, the Christian nations have no right to accuse Muslims in general of being terrorists. As is part of Christian ethics, "Let he who is without sin throw the first stone."

#1  Typical Muslim: stuff that happened 500 years ago is still current. It's one of the things that holds back their cultures.

#2  Yet, he does not mention the Hindu Kush "Killer of the Hindus" - an entire mountain range named after the millions who perished on the way to the slave markets after their capture by the Muslims.

#4  I assume that this is the AQ Khan... someone who deserves a VIP suite at Guantanamo as much as anyone?

Instead he lives free and pens pseudo-historical screeds justifying war with the West in just about as many words.

I guarantee there will be no answering salvo from the free people of the West; as usual, we forfeit the match in the 'game of ideas.' Bush & co. never could get this right, Obama & co. will only be worse. That AF1 photo-shoot probably cost more than our entire budget dedicated to 'push-back' against editorials like this one.
