Canada Judge Awards Probation For Strangulation Murder
Calgary mom Aset Magomadova doesn't have to go to jail for strangling her promiscuous, 14-year-old daughter, a judge ruled Thursday.

Justice Sal LoVecchio said a non-custodial punishment would be sufficient for Magomadova's killing of daughter Aminat. LoVecchio sentenced the city woman to a three-year term of probation.

Crown prosecutor Mac Vomberg sought a 12-year prison term, while defence lawyer Alain Hepner argued a combination of house arrest and probation would be sufficient punishment.

Magomadova was convicted by LoVecchio of manslaughter last October, after the judge ruled she wasn't acting in self-defence when she wrapped a scarf around the neck of daughter Aminat and strangled her.

Magomadova was originally charged with second-degree murder in the teen's Feb. 26, 2007, death, but LoVecchio ruled Vomberg did not prove the intent for such a charge. The Crown has already appealed that ruling.

Magomadova had claimed her daughter, who was a rebellious teen who had been in trouble with the law and had run away from home, attacked her while they argued over whether Aminat would make a court appearance that day.

But LoVecchio said the evidence didn't support the accused's contention she had to use her scarf to defend herself from a deadly attack.

Islamic bathing suits make huge sales in Egypt
[Al Arabiya Latest] Chinese-imported Islamic bathing suits invaded the Egyptian market since the beginning of the summer amidst protests by clerics who argued it is in violation of the teachings of Islam.
*sigh* It's nice that more women will feel comfortable on the beach, and this is so much safer than going in the water in those black sacks, but this style will not help with the severe vitamin D deficiency that they suffer due to lack of exposure to the sun.
Veiled women in Egypt have been flocking to stores that sell Islamic, also called 'legitimate,' bathing suits imported from China and which started competing with their Lebanese counterparts that have been fashionable in previous summers.

" Bikinis and one-piece bathing suits are unacceptable in several places and girls wearing them are sometimes molested "
Islamic bathing suits are made up of a long-sleeved top, stretch pants covered with a short skirt, and a headscarf. Its fabric is the same as regular bathing suits.

As the numbers of buyers remarkably increased, Islamic bathing suits went from dark to bright colors and included vibrant patterns similar to ones printed on their regular counterparts.

Contrary to what happened in the past few years, unveiled women are starting to buy Islamic bathing suits due to increased harassment incidents in several beaches, said store owner Sabry Mourad.

"Bikinis and one-piece bathing suits are unacceptable in several places and girls wearing them are sometimes molested, so they find it much safer to wear bathing suits that cover the whole body," he told Al Arabiya.
Because Islamic men choose to allow themselves to act like rabid dogs.
The prices of Islamic bathing suits made in China are also affordable as they range from 75 to 500 Egyptian Pounds, said store owner Mohamed Gamal.

Not necessarily, Ebbang.

My maternal grandmother had skin cancer on her back (luckily not serious) in the 1960's. I guaran-damn-tee you she never had the sun on her back, even as a child. (She grew up in the mountains, and was married in 1905, back when a lady didn't do stuff like sunbathing. And she never went to the beach, hundreds of miles away.)

I wouldn't have been surprised if it were on her face or arms, which had gotten plenty of sun through the years. (She grew up on a farm, and had a large garden and hung the wash outside most of my life.)

Caribbean-Latin America
Chavez: Venezuela rethinks relations with Vatican
[Seattle PI] President Hugo Chavez announced Wednesday that Venezuela would rethink its relations with the Vatican as tensions rise between his government and Catholic Church representatives who accuse the socialist leader of becoming increasingly authoritarian.

During a televised speech, Chavez instructed his foreign minister to "examine" relations with the Vatican. Without elaborating, he questioned the validity of an agreement giving the Catholic Church privileges that are not extended to other religious organizations in Venezuela.

Chavez also challenged the authority of Pope Benedict XVI, saying the pope "isn't God's emissary on Earth."

There was no immediately reaction from the papal nuncio in Caracas.

Chavez and Venezuela's Catholic Church are clashing like never before. In recent weeks, Chavez has said that Christ would whip church leaders for suggesting that he's steering Venezuela toward a Cuban-style Marxist dictatorship. He also accused Cardinal Jorge Urosa of misleading the Vatican with warnings that Venezuela is drifting toward dictatorship.

Urosa has defended his decision to tell the Vatican that Chavez is curbing freedoms.

Chavez said Urosa represents the interests of "fascist, extreme right-wing" elites and accused the clergy of siding with opposition parties ahead of September legislative elections.

Priests critical of his government "are trying to manipulate the people," Chavez said.

The Venezuelan Bishops' Conference issued a statement this week warning that political polarization is creating a hostile environment ahead of the Sept. 26 vote.

#2  Chavez also challenged the authority of Pope Benedict XVI, saying the pope "isn't God's emissary on Earth."

Stalin famously asked, "The Pope? How many divisions has he got." Where's Stalin's USSR today? That little behind the scene play in Poland got the dominoes falling that ended at the doorsteps of the Kremlin. Why not dare the Pope to excommunicate you and see how many of your peons prols will die to defend you?

#6  I don't know about Venezuela, but if you came off with that statement in Mexico you'd end up wandering the coutryside, a dirty old beggar, endlessly searching for your long lost nuts.

Catholics are essentially the only religion in all of latin america I have seen, spare a few Jehovah's Witnesses. I would guess that its the same there. They're not used to people discussing religion in an anti catholic way, much like muslims are not used to critique about mo-ham-head. You could get a surprising reaction from them.

#9  My point was that Catholicism is pretty much IT in much of Latin America. I wonder how hardcore catholics will respond to criticism, they've likely never had to deal with it. They may react irrationally like 'you know who' when you ask too many questions about their religion. Not because they're violent, but because they've never had to deal with critique before.

Fifth Column
US analyst, wife sentenced for spying for Cuba
WASHINGTON – The 73-year-old great grandson of Alexander Graham Bell was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for quietly spying for Cuba for nearly a third of a century from inside the State Department. His wife was sentenced to 5 1/2 years.
Geez, I'll bet Al is soooo proud...
Retired intelligence analyst Kendall Myers said he meant his country no harm and stole secrets only to help Cuba's people who "have good reason to feel threatened" by U.S. intentions of ousting the communist Castro government.
Remember when we used to electrocute people like this?
Justice Department prosecutor Michael Harvey said the couple received medals from Cuban intelligence and were flown to the island nation for a visit with Fidel Castro in 1995. They pleaded guilty last November.
Yeah, who would notice that?
The couple's overriding objective was to help the Cuban people defend their revolution, Myers told Walton. He said that he and his wife tried to accurately report what U.S. policy was toward Cuba, to warn Cuba and to try to assess the nature of any threat.
Hope you and the missus die inside, asshole...

#1  In a prepared statement, Myers said he and his wife never wanted to harm Americans.

"We wish to add at this time that we acted as we did for 30 years because of our ideals and beliefs," he said. "We did not seek nor receive payment for our work. We did not act out of anger at the United States or from a feeling of anti-Americanism. Nor did we ever intend to hurt any individual Americans. Our overriding objective was to help the Cuban people defend their revolution. We also hoped to forestall conflict between the two countries."

"We share the dreams and ideals of the Cuban revolution," he added. "We are equally committed to helping the struggling people of the world, whether they are here at home or abroad."

Sounds like he fit right in at State...

India-Pakistan
India in talks with Israel to buy Iron Dome, David's Sling
"Defense News" reports that India is in talks to buy Israel's ground-based rocket and missile interceptor systems Iron Dome and David's Sling.

David's Sling, designed to intercept medium-range missiles (70-240 kilometers range), is being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN). The system is also n the Ministry of Defense.

Indian Ministry of Defence sources told "Defense News" negotiations between the Israeli and Indian governments on a deal for David's Sling had been going on for more than six months. The sources added that Israel was open to sales of David's Sling, but that it would not transfer the system's technology as part of a deal.

The sources said that India was developing its own missile interception system for short and medium range missiles (50-80 kilometer range), known as the PAD. However, this system cannot intercept low-flying cruise missiles. This may be the reason why India is interested in the Israeli system.

An Indian Ministry of Defence official said that neither its aging Russian-built air defense systems nor the PAD system can serve as the country' sole line of defense against potential missile threats from Pakistan or China. He said that the procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure".

Iraq
Saudi civil aircraft in first flight to Iraq in 20 years
A Saudi civil airliner touched down in the main southern Iraqi city of Basra on Thursday on the first such flight between the neighbouring countries since Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The Alwafeer Boeing 747 flew into Basra at 8:15 am (0515 GMT) from the western Saudi city of Jeddah, gateway to the Muslim holy places, but there were no passengers on the incoming flight.

On its return trip, the plane was to carry 450 Iraqis intending to make the lesser pilgrimage, or Omra, to Mecca and Medina.

For years Iraqi pilgrims have had to make the long overland bus journey to the Muslim holy places or pick up a flight to Jeddah in a neighbouring country.

‘I am very happy to have landed in Basra airport and to have piloted the first Saudi flight to touch down in Iraq for such a long time,’ said the plane’s captain, Ghassan Hakim. ‘The airport is up to Arab and Ukrainian European standards and is fully equipped and serviced."
Arab standards. Don't cancel the life insurance, Fatima ...
Basra airport director Abdul Amir Ghanem Abdullah said: ‘We are very happy with the arrival of this aircraft after a 20-year break.’

Even since Saddam was removed from power in 2003, the Saudi government has remained cautious about relations with Iraq, and still refuses to reopen its diplomatic mission in Baghdad, citing security issues.

When it launched last September, privately owned Alwafeer focused on charter flights carrying Muslim pilgrims to Jeddah from Niger, Chad, Libya and India before getting government permission to begin flying to and from Iraq.

Indonesia Islamic cops jailed for gang-raping woman
An Indonesian court on Thursday jailed two Islamic policemen for gang-raping a young woman in custody, a case that has sparked outrage in the deeply religious province of Aceh. Mohammed Nazir, 29, and Feri Agus, 28, were found guilty of raping a 20-year-old student in a police station in January after she was arrested with her boyfriend under local laws designed to enforce Islamic morals. The eight-year jail sentence for the two men was lighter that the maximum penalty of 12 years demanded by prosecutors. But the judge defended the punishment. "The defendants have never committed any crime before, they were always polite during the trial and they are the breadwinners in their family", chief judge Lukman Bachmit said. "An eight-year jail term is considered quite heavy compared to other similar crime in Indonesia," he said. Indonesia's Muslims are mostly moderate, but Aceh has special autonomy, and one of the ways it differentiates itself is through implementation of sharia law, enforced by special Islamic police.
