ICE gang surge nets 102 arrests in Phoenix, Yuma
A total of 102 individuals with ties to 19 different street gangs are facing criminal charges or deportation following a six-day, multi-agency enforcement action in Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz. spearheaded by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Deported? I thought ICE wasn't doing that any more since they were 'overloaded' with work ...
The arrests were made as part of Operation Community Shield, an ongoing initiative by ICE-HSI's National Gang Unit in which the agency uses its powerful immigration and customs authorities in a coordinated strategy to attack and dismantle criminal street gangs across the country. As part of the initiative, ICE partners with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to target the significant public safety threat posed by transnational gangs.

Of the gang members and gang associates arrested during the enforcement action that concluded late Saturday, 29 are currently facing prosecution on state criminal charges, including outstanding warrants for gang-related violations. Three of the subjects arrested will also be presented to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution for felony re-entry after deportation, a federal violation that carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

"Gang activity poses one of the greatest threats to public safety in Arizona communities," said Matt Allen, special agent in charge for ICE-HSI in Arizona. "ICE is successfully targeting these gangs, arresting their leaders, disrupting their operations, and putting their members and associates behind bars."

Among those arrested during the enforcement action in Phoenix was a 33-year-old Mexican gang member in Mesa whose criminal history includes a conviction for aggravated assault in 2007. Another of the individuals taken into custody was a 27-year-old member of a Chandler gang wanted for burglary in California. The California Department of Corrections agreed to extradite Miguel Angel Lopez-Zuniga, who was booked into the Maricopa County Jail to await transfer to California.

In Yuma, ICE agents arrested gang member Fernando Ulloa, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, on Arizona state charges related to a conspiracy to distribute marijuana and money laundering. Agents also arrested gang member Claudio Garcia, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen, for contempt of court.

Twenty-six of the gang members and gang associates arrested during the operation are U.S. citizens. The remaining 76 individuals are foreign nationals. The majority of the foreign nationals are from Mexico (58), but the group also includes citizens from Guatemala and Honduras. Those foreign nationals who are not being prosecuted on criminal charges are being processed for removal from the United States.

Since Operation Community Shield began in February 2005, ICE agents nationwide have arrested more than 18,000 gang members and gang associates. As part of the effort, HSI's National Gang Unit identifies violent street gangs and develops intelligence on their membership, associates, criminal activities and international movements to deter, disrupt and dismantle gang operations. Transnational street gangs have significant numbers of foreign-born members and are frequently involved in human and contraband smuggling, immigration violations and other crimes with a connection to the border.
To report suspicious activity, call ICE's 24-hour toll-free hotline at: 1-866-347-2423 or visit www.ice.gov.

#2  If this a true representation of ICE efforts, great. However, there is a more of such activity to be done. I'm sorry but I'm jaundiced about any data coming from Washington. The Obama administration has cooked the numbers to such an extent it taints and stains the credibility of any numbers coming out of Washington. Consider the "jobs saved or created," propaganda, how wonderful the health care bill is, all the wonderful news about the economy, and the latest: "How many lives have been touched" by the stimulus plan.

#3  John, Our local law enforcement is doing a great job of trying to protect us from this war. What is happening, downplayed by calling it gangs, is an armed invasion by the catrels. They control cels in Arizona where money and drugs are transferred. ICE getting involed means they have realized it is an organized effort by an outside organization.

#4  I read where Gov. Jan Brewer has appealed the ruling by the Federal judge who tried to hamstring Arizona from enforcing State and Federal immigration law. It must be difficult for local law enforcement along the border when a donk executive branch and the DOJ idealogues are at war with the States.

#5  Drug trans-shipment, money laundering, etc are state as well as federal crimes. Even if the Arizona coppers can't ask about residency and citizenship they can take down these jokers.

If Brewer really wants to be serious, have the AZ state police step up on the border. Hire as many new officers as needed, get them trained properly, and get them out there. Bambi and Eric Holder can't do anything about that.

#6  Both ICE and BP agents are pissed off at their managers. More and more, the intensity of their work is making them almost paramilitary. And like with military men, they hate getting undermined by squishy leaders.

Eventually they will get a sympathetic administration, which will tell them to do their job, and back them up with the weapons, equipment and ROE they need. And then it will be payback time.

Volcano erupts in southwestern Colombia
(Xinhua) -- Galeras Volcano, located in San Juan de Pasto, Narino department's capital, in the southwest of Colombia, erupted on at 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday local time (0900 GMT), without report of victims.

Assistant director of the Colombian Geology and Mining Institute (Ingeominas) Martha Calvache told local radio station Caracol, that the alert on the volcano were raised from orange to red, the highest level, which implies an "imminent or current eruption." This made the authorities to order the evacuation of thousands of residents in nearby villages and town.

But "it has not been possible to analyze the material coming out from the volcano, which could be associated to ashes or probably to lava," Calvache said.

Later, Ingominas said in a statement published on its website that "to the moment there were no reports of ashes fall in Sandona and La Florida municipalities located in the northwestern side of the volcano."

Meanwhile, director of Colombian Red Cross Carlos Ivan Marquez told Radio Caracol that "to the moment we do not have any report of damaged or the expel of a large amount of (volcanic) material."

Galeras Volcano, located 9 kilometers from San Juan de Pasto and 4,276 meters high over the sea level, has been active since many years ago and in the last days several earthquakes related to its activity had been reported.

#2  Depending on what gases it's belching could be important Vader. Usually it's alot of water vapor, CO2 with some sulphur. If it's spitting out LOTS of sulphur or other nasty gases, it could have some serious effects on everything near it.

If there is lots of ash coming out, it's going to have serious effects on local, regional and even global weather.

Total effects can range from minor to "ohcrap". Since it didn't explode, it's probably not too bad but there needs to be research done.

Bahrain newspaper editor injured in attack
Non-WoT, but it's curious ...
MANAMA — Officials in Bahrain have described Wednesday’s attack on the managing editor of a local newspaper as an assassination attempt.

A Palestinian, Muhannad Abu Zeitoun, 31, who works for pro-government Al Watan newspaper, was attacked by two masked individuals outside his office in the early hours of Wednesday. They also set his car on fire. Al Watan carries reports critical of opposition activities.

According to the interior ministry, one of the attackers struck Abu Zeitoun with a sharp object, while the other threw a Molotov cocktail inside his car, before fleeing the scene. He was referred to a nearby health centre where he was treated for a wound in his left hand.

No one has been arrested so far by the police which have launched an intensive search. The fire was put out by a security guard of the newspaper.

“I cannot be certain whether the two masked men were targeting me personally, as they asked me if I worked for the paper before attacking me which means they might not have known me,” Abu Zeitoun told a local newspaper.

His other colleagues exited minutes before him but were not attacked by the two Bahrainis in their early twenties.

Bangladesh
Four lynched in BD over human sacrifice rumour
[The News (Pak)] Marauding mobs in southern Bangladesh have lynched four people in recent days after rumours spread that some locals were kidnapping children for human sacrifice, police said on Wednesday.

The police in the southeastern port city of Chittagong have launched a massive campaign to counter the misinformation and to restore calm, city police chief Abul Kashem told AFP.

"Rumours are swirling all over the city that kidnappers are hunting for human heads to sacrifice them for the new bridge," he said, adding that two women had been killed and two men rescued by police from angry mobs.

In Chittagong district, which surrounds the port city of five million people, two more men were killed, and eight seriously injured by a mob, said Faruk Ahmed, assistant police superintendent in the area.

Some rural Bangladeshis are deeply superstitious, believing that human heads must be sacrificed in order to make a bridge strong. A new bridge over a major river in Chittagong is set to open next month.

"We're on red alert and we ask people: please don't believe these rumours, and don't take the law into your own hands," Ahmed told AFP, adding that his force had increased patrols at markets and arrested 43 people over the killings.

City police chief Kashem said officers had begun using loudspeakers to warn people not to listen to rumours or believe in superstitions.

"We are also publishing advertisements in newspapers and we urge clerics to use their sermons to fight off this social ill," he said.

Killings over traditional rituals are reasonably common in rural Bangladesh. In March, a labourer was murdered by brick-field workers who burnt his head in a kiln in the belief this would improve the quality of their bricks.

#2  Not really. This is a known technology, so the only breakthrough, if indeed there was one, was in distance.

"In previous experiments, the photons were confined to fiber channels a few hundred meters long to ensure their state remained unchanged. However, in the new experiment, the pairs of photons were entangled and then the higher energy photon of the pair was sent through a free space channel over 10 miles long."

Importantly, one of the big findings from this so far is that entangled pairs have not been seen to violate causality. That is, though there is spooky action at a distance, it cannot transmit information faster than light.

Were it to be able to do so, it would be so classified that most deities would not be permitted to know about it.

Norks release American to Carter
SEOUL, South Korea – Looking gaunt but relieved, an American freed after nearly seven months jailed in North Korea left Pyongyang on Friday in the company of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
...and he thought his hell was over.
Aijalon Gomes, 31, hugged Carter just before they boarded a plane at Pyongyang's airport, footage aired by broadcaster APTN in North Korea showed. Carter had flown to the North Korean capital three days earlier on a rare private mission to negotiate Gomes' release.

The former president "courteously requested" a special pardon for Gomes, which leader Kim Jong Il granted, North Korean state media said. Gomes had been sentenced in April to eight years of hard labor and a hefty fine for trespassing and committing a "hostile act."
Well, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile...

India-Pakistan
500,000 Pakistanis evacuated as flooding continues
[Gulf News] Pakistan ordered nearly half a million people to evacuate three towns on Thursday, as floodwaters broke through a river embankment threatening more havoc in a country already brought to its knees by the month-long disaster.

A warning was issued after floods caused a breach in one of the embankments at Surjani village in Thatta, close to the Indus river.

Officials are urging anyone left in the southern towns of Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro and Daro to evacuate immediately as floodwaters have broken through a levee, endangering areas previously untouched.

Mansoor Shaikh, a top government official in the Thatta district, told how the swollen Indus River broke through the Sur Jani embankment, in southern Sindh province on Wednesday, threatening the towns of Sujawal, Daro and Mir Pur Batoro. He said most of the 400,000 people, who live in the area, are thought to have been evacuated already, but those remaining were warned to flee.

In the southern province of Sindh, where the floods have washed away huge swathes of rich farmland on which Pakistan's spluttering economy depends, a senior administration official commented: "We have warned people of Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro and Daro towns to leave for safer places in view of possible flooding there."

Authorities were also battling on Thursday to save the city of Shahdadkot from surging waters, after most of its 100,000 residents were moved to safety.

Rescuers safely evacuated 90 per cent of people from the nearby flooded town of Qubo Saeed Khan. However, efforts were being made to rescue thousands of others stranded in at least 25 villages around the town.

"We are using helicopters and naval boats to evacuate these people," local administration official, Yaseen Shar, said.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from flood-threatened areas close to Hyderabad, on the lower reaches of the Indus, where more than 40 nearby villages have been swept away.

Barkaat Rizvi, spokesman for the Hyderabad district administration, has said residents are still leaving vulnerable areas, adding: "Danger is still there."

Pakistan's worst humanitarian catastrophe has already affected more than 17 million people, while officials warn that millions are at risk from water-borne diseases and food shortages. Around 1,500 people have been confirmed dead, but UN officials have suggested the death toll could prove to be higher.

The United Nations warned that 800,000 people in desperate need of aid have been cut off by the deluge across the country and appealed for more helicopters to deliver supplies to those people reachable only by air.

Meanwhile in Washington, a US official has claimed the Pakistani Taliban are planning to attack foreign aid workers engaged in the relief effort.

"According to information available to the US government, Tehreek e Taliban plans to conduct attacks against foreigners participating in the ongoing flood relief operations in Pakistan," an official said. "Tehreek E Taliban also may be making plans to attack federal and provincial ministers in Islamabad."

The Pakistani Taliban have previously denounced all foreign aid for victims of the country's catastrophic flooding.

Tehreek e Taliban faction is a key architect of extremist violence that has killed more than 3,580 people across Pakistan in three years.

However, US officials say they have encountered no hostilities in flying aid to stricken parts of Pakistan, where anti-Americanism runs deep.

Police refuse to register FIR as 18-year-old girl stays hostage
[The News (Pak)] The family of an 18-year-old girl, a resident of Bhesa village of Hazara district who was kidnapped during a visit to a shrine in Taret area of Murree on August 19, is running from pillar to post for registration of a case but no FIR has so far been registered by police although identities and phone numbers of the kidnappers are known.

According to Sub-Inspector Raja Iftikhar of Taret Police Post, the hostage Nayyara Bibi is resident of Hazara district so legally they could not register an FIR of her kidnapping because it could create problems for them at a later stage. He said that registrationof FIR by him could earn ire of senior police officers.

The native Bhesa village of the kidnapped girl falls in the jurisdiction of Lora Police Station and Station House Officer of Lora Nazar Hussain says as the girl was kidnapped from the limits of Taret police, they are legally unable to register an FIR.

On the other hand, Muhammad Ziaraf, maternal uncle of the kidnapped girl, alleged that Murree police were demanding Rs70,000 for registration of the FIR. He said soon after the incident, the kidnappers made a telephone call from cellular phone number 0322-5736215, owned by one Tahir Abbasi, to the father of the girl, Muhammad Ibrar, on his mobile phone number 0302-5084456 and demanded Rs10 million as ransom if he wanted his daughter freed alive.

He said 42 calls have so far been received from mobile number 0321-9512287, owned by one Sagheer Ahmed, and the ransom amount has been decreased by the kidnappers to Rs300,000.

Muhammad Ziaraf said the kidnappers also allowed the kidnapped girl to talk to her father on telephone, wherein she cried for saving her life. He said the man who allowed the girl to talk to her father later said that if they are paid Rs300,000, they would free the girl otherwise she would be killed.

When contacted by The News, an official of Taret Police Post claimed that the kidnapped girl did visit the shrine along with another girl namely Salma from the same village and then returned in a motorcar alone.

The maternal uncle of Nayyara Bibi admitted that his niece was accompanied by Salma and was kidnapped on her way back home. He claimed that one of the telephone numbers from which calls have been made by the kidnappers belong to the brother of Salma.

When this correspondent contacted some residents of Bhesa village to ascertain details, they said that Nayyara Bibi and her family are straight and simple villagers. The same stance was adopted by Sub-Inspector Raja Iftikhar of Taret Police Post.

The police have, however, not registered an FIR so far despite receiving an application from the family of the kidnapped girl. The officials of Taret Police Post told the family of the girl that she would be recovered and they should not be worried in this regard.

This correspondent tried to contact Inspector-General of Police Punjab Tariq Saleem Dogar on his official telephone but his staff said he is not available and whenever he reaches office they would call back The News but that did not happen.

Home Front: Culture Wars
"Right-wing conservatives have "declared war on the civil rights movement "
A civil rights activist and former congressman equated the Tea Party with the Ku Klux Klan today as he blasted a conservative rally planned in Washington, D.C., this weekend.

The Rev. Walter Fauntroy,
Who?
the non-voting delegate who represented the District of Columbia from 1971 to 1991,
Oh, him ...
called on African-Americans to organize a "new coalition of conscience" to rebut the rally scheduled for Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial featuring Fox News pundit Glenn Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

"We are going to take on the barbarism of war, the decadence of racism, and the scourge of poverty, that the Ku Klux -- I meant to say the Tea Party," Fauntroy told a news conference today at the National Press Club. "You all forgive me, but I -- you have to use them interchangeably."
Typical pomo asshat. The Nazi / racist / KKK shit is just so played, Walt ...

#5  A civil rights activistBlack Power advocate and former congressman equated the Tea Party with the Ku Klux Klan today as he blasted a conservative rally planned in Washington, D.C., this weekend.

True civil rights were predicated upon one fundamental issue of equality before the law. That died with 'social justice', 'diversity', and 'set asides' which promoted race over merit. Now those who've taken the power and privilege under false pretense are obviously distraught that real government of the people and by the people may reemerge.

#6  So let me get this straight....they think no one else but them should ever speak on that day at the lincoln memorial.

Here's the deal. You are either human or not. The ONLY race is human. Claim to be anything else, you should have no rights and should be considered some sort of vermin.

#14  I was driving the other day in a trendy mostly white neighborhood and saw a crew working on a waterline. Typical 6-8 men, backhoe, scene. 6 black guys leaning on shovles watching and one white guy in a white shirt in the ditch with a shovel. startled me so much I stopped and commented. " Boy, if this dont blow the hell out of stereotypes". 3 of the black guys laughed.

The Bushes do it Again - Surprises "Run for the Fallen"
Bush and LauraH/T Lucianne.com
If you are not familiar with the Run for the Fallen, from their home page:

On the weekend of August 21/22, 2010, we are encouraging anyone, wherever they are, to go out and run/walk one mile for a fallen service member killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Similar to our events in 2008 and 2009, we will post runs here, in order!, by state and country. Please email contact [at] runforthefallen [dot] org with information about your run.

Our goal is to again have all 50 states participate. Last year, there were over 5,000 participants in 35 states and four countries, running a combined total of over 31,000 miles. Help us to continue to honor and remember our service members, bringing people and communities together. Together, let us Run for the Fallen.

OGUNQUIT, Maine: Dozens of runners took part in the event to remember the 65 servicemen and women from Maine who have died overseas since 2001.

Hundreds of people lined the streets from Ogunquit to Portland to greet the people who ran a little more than 40 miles Sunday. There was a sign at each kilometer that included a picture and biography of one of those who died.

When the run ended, people gathered at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth for a lobster bake. They were surprised with a visit from former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura. They wanted to thank the runners and organizers for this tribute to the fallen.

The Bushes spoke with the families of the servicemen and women who were on hand. The Bushes even posed for pictures with each of the families.

#1  Say what you will about the man politically, he truly knows the sacrifices he asked of the military and the price they paid, and I think he feels that in his heart.

With Bush at the military had a Commander-in-chief they could believe in because they had a Commander-in-chief that believed in them.

Compare that to the disdainful jerk they now have who seeks only to use them without any real care or empathy or knowledge of what drives the military: Brotherhood, Honor, Duty, Country.

#6  Cyber Sarge: I believe at some point, there were no fewer than 30 military installation and navy ships where Clinton was advised not to visit, as his safety could not be guaranteed.

As far as Jimmy goes, the USN was frightened of him, because sailors considered him a Jonah. Before visiting the Enterprise, an unlucky wave caused it and another ship to "bump", harming the other ship. Then a plane's hydraulics went out, they had to dump their munitions and crash land on the deck.
