Afghanistan
Sa'ad Mohammad al Shahri Killed in A'stan
Sa'ad Mohammad al Shahri, a longtime jihadist and the son of a retired Saudi colonel, was killed in an unidentified airstrike in Afghanistan "a few days ago," Gulf News reported.

The location of the strike that killed al Shahri has not been identified, however the International Security Assistance Force announced that an airstrike in the Korengal Valley in Kunar province on Sept. 25 killed a senior al Qaeda leader named Abdallah Umar al Qurayshi, an "explosives expert" named Abu Atta al Kuwaiti, "and several Arab foreign fighters."
Sounds like a 'useful' crew - wonder if we got boots on the ground to pick up phones, computers, documents.
Al Shahri has been wanted by the Saudi government since June 28, 2005, when he was placed on the list of 36 most wanted terrorists.
Was he really wanted by the Saudis, or did they just want him somewhere else?

Pirates demand $15mn for Maltese ship
[Iran Press TV] Somali pirates have demanded $15 million to free a Malta-flagged fat merchantman hijacked in the Gulf of Aden with a crew of 15 Georgians and three Turks onboard.

The owner of the MV Olib G initially offered a ransom of $75,000, but later raised it to $150,000. However,
The infamous However...
the sea pirates want no less than $15 million, a Press TV correspondent reported on Saturday.

The fat merchantman, carrying ballast and en route from Alexandria to India, was seized in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden on September 8.

Thirty die in escalating fighting in Mogadishu
(Xinhua) -- At least 30 people including 24 combatants were killed and almost 50 others were maimed on Monday in third day of the consecutive fighting between beturbanned fascisti and African Union (AU) peacekeeping troops backing Somali government, medics and local media reports said.

The AU troops based in Mogadishu engaged Islamist fighters around key areas in the beturbanned goon controlled south of the city where the AU peacekeepers on Sunday set up a new base in the fiercely contested former military hospital building.

Most of the casualties in the latest clashes over control of the area around the main route connecting bases of AU troops were combatants from both warring sides who suffered almost 24 dead among 30 fatalities while 40 of the 50 maimed were fighters and government forces, local Shabelle radio reported.

Medics who confirmed the figures also said that the affected civilians were caught in the crossfire as stray shells and bullets hit a number of residential areas in both beturbanned goon and government run parts of the capital, Mogadishu.

Fire broke out in a store in the main Bakara market after it was hit by a shell and traders at the open-air market struggled to put out the inferno that destroyed commercial goods as well as the building of the store.

Both warring sides claimed victories in the latest flare-up of fighting over control of key strategic positions in divided Mogadishu which is partly controlled by Islamists groups and Somali government forces backed by almost 6,000 AU peacekeeping troops.

Somali government and AU peacekeeping troops vowed to continue their push deep into Islamist controlled part of the restive Somali capital, Mogadishu while Islamist leaders reiterated their resolve to resist the AU backed government offensive.

Islamist groups opposed to the hapless Somali government and the presence of AU troops in Mogadishu often launch almost daily attacks on positions of AU and government forces.

'Foreigners behind Abuja bombings'
[Iran Press TV] The Nigerian president has stated that a foreign-based terrorist group is to blame for Friday's bomb attacks in Abuja and not the snuffy group MEND.

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Sunday, "It is a small terrorist group that resides outside Nigeria that was paid by some people within to perpetrate the dastardly act," according to a statement from his office.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had allegedly grabbed credit for the attacks, but Jonathan explained "there was a statement purported to have been written by MEND, but investigations show that members of MEND have said they don't know about it."

Henry Okah, a former leader of MEND was jugged in South Africa in connection with the bombings on Saturday.

At least 12 people were killed in Abuja on Friday when two car bombs blew up during celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Nigeria's independence.

The snuffy group MEND -- which is responsible for attacks that have cut a fifth of OPEC member Nigeria's oil output -- has targeted foreign oil companies, bombed pipelines, and kidnapped hundreds of foreign oil workers in the south since 2006.

The group hopes to secure a greater share of oil wealth for people in the Niger Delta, where more than 70 percent of the population lives on less than a dollar a day.

Bangladesh
84 BDR men indicted
[Bangla Daily Star] The Special Court-11 trying BDR mutineers at the Pilkhana headquarters yesterday framed charges against 84 accused personnel of Dhaka Sector Rifle Headquarters and asked the prosecutor to place witnesses before it on November 7.

Out of the 84 alleged mutineers present on the dock, five pleaded guilty while the remaining 79 claimed themselves as innocent.

The five who pleaded guilty are Lance Nayek Jahangir Alam, Lance Nayek (driver) Awal Hawlader, sepoys Imran Hossain, Rafiqul Hossain and Anwar Hossain.

Awal, driver of slain Col Mujibul Haque, however told the court in a voice choked with emotion that he had been languishing in jail for a year though he did not even harm a leaf of tree in Pilkhana during the mutiny.

Still he is pleaded guilty, as charges have been brought against him, he said.

The special court led by Col Iftekhar Uddin Mahmud BDR Sector Commander of Mymensingh started its proceedings at about 10:10am and continued for nearly an hour and a half.

A total of 84 accused border guards were produced before the court prior to the beginning of its proceedings.

The court adjourned its hearing till 10:00am on November 7.

Prosecutor Major Md Taslim Uddin had brought six charges, including killing, looting arms and plotting the mutiny, against the accused.

Earlier, the accused of the sector were tried under BDR Special Court-5, which is one of the six courts formed after the bloody carnage at Pilkhana that left 74 people including 57 army officials dead.

Bangla secularism back
[Bangla Daily Star] The High Court yesterday ruled that Bangladesh is now a secular state since the original constitution of 1972 has been automatically restored following the Supreme Court judgement on the fifth amendment.

In this secular state, everybody has religious freedom, and therefore no man, woman or child can be forced to wear religious attires like burqa, cap and dhuti, the HC said in a verdict.

But nobody could be prohibited from wearing religious attires if he or she wishes to wear those, it said.

The court also directed the authorities to immediately issue a circular asking all educational institutions not to compel students to wear religious clothes.

A division bench of the HC came up with the judgement after hearing a suo moto rule issued by it on August 22 asking the government to explain why compelling women to wear religious attires should not be declared illegal.

The bench comprised of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain had issued the rule following a report published in a Bangla daily with the headline "Rani Bhabani Mohila College: Burqa Na Porle Ashte Mana" (Students of Rani Bhabani Women's College not wearing veils are barred from entering the campus).

The August 22 report said principal of the college at Natore Mozammel Haque stopped cultural activities and sports at the college, and prohibited students not come to the campus without wearing burqa.

The HC observed that the four state principles including secularism, the main spirit of the Liberation War of the republic, have been re-established since the constitution of 1972 has been restored.

Some military rulers had illegally damaged the constitution of 1972 through martial law regulations, which are not recognised now, the judgement said.

The court directed the government to probe the allegations against the principal and take action.

But he should be kept on suspension during probe, it said.

Earlier, responding to the HC rule, the government had informed the court that it had issued a circular asking the authorities concerned not to compel women students to wear religious attire, and made Mozammel an officer on special duty (OSD).

Mozammel appeared before the HC bench yesterday as per its earlier order.

Secretaries to the ministries of home, education, social welfare and women affairs, and the principal have been made respondents to the court verdict.

SC lawyers Mahbub Shafique and KM Hafizul Alam argued before the court against compulsory wearing of religious attires.

Deputy Attorney General Nazrul Islam Talukder represented the government.

3 'LeT men' captured
[Bangla Daily Star] The Detective Branch (DB) of police yesterday claimed to have jugged Pakistain-based Islamic exemplar group Lashker-e-Taiba's coordinator in Bangladesh and two of his Pak associates.

The arrestees are LeT's Bangladesh coordinator Khurram alias Mohammad Salem, 42, and his associates Abdul Malek, 31, and Imran, 31. All the three Pak nationals were jugged at a hotel in the capital on Saturday.

Acting on a tip off, DB police raided the hotel and jugged the three with 160 cartons of foreign cigarettes and 153 bottles of exotic perfume, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Monirul Islam of DB during a press briefing at his office.

The DC said Khurram's name emerged as the coordinator of India and Bangladesh chapters when Indian nationals Mufti Obaidullah and Maulana Emadullah and Pak national Sufian Ajhari were jugged here and interrogated for their involvement with LeT.

DB officials claimed that Khurram had also been serving the banned Islamic exemplar outfits Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Harkat-ul-Jihad al-islami (Huji).

In the face of frequent arrests in Bangladesh, the LeT operatives have adopted the method of using several names and passports for each individual, said the DC adding, that the LeT men also use Bangladeshi passports.

He said although Khurram has Bangladeshi passport, he used his Pak one this time. According to his seized passport, Khurram visited the country 11 times this year so far.

Asked, the DC said the immigration cannot identify a person who use different names and passports.

He said the LeT operatives use the country as a transit for counterfeit money business although they could not establish an LeT unit in the country. However,
The infamous However...
their effort to recruit operatives from here is on, added the DC.

DC Monirul Islam said that so far they have jugged three Pak and three Indian LeT adherents and their several Bangladeshi aides.

Tamaulipas: Bad Guys Attack PGJE Offices with Grenade
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
Armed suspects riding in a sedan threw a grenade against the offices of Tamaulipas' Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado in Matamoros Monday, say Mexican news reports.

The attack took place at about 1300 hrs near the intersection of Avenida del Maestro and Bulevar Manuel Cavazos Lerma where armed suspects fired on elements of the Policia Preventiva, and then threw a hand grenade against the PGJE offices.

The grenade did not detonate because the fuse was not in the grenade. The attackers then fled the area. Their vehicle was later found abandoned with the fuse of the grenade left in the passenger front seat.

No one was reported hurt in the attack.

The last hand grenade attack took place late last month when a grenade detonated at the city offices of Matamoros. Two unidentified female passers-by were wounded in that attack.

#1  The hysterical laughter in this part of Canuckistan will probably continue for the entire day because of the following sentence:

"The grenade did not detonate because the fuse was not in the grenade."

So why not throw a goodly sized rock? At least it might have a sharp edge or two.

Oh. Wait. . . . "with the fuse of the grenade left in the passenger front seat." AH HA!!! Now I understand.

What we have here are Bad Guys who are (take your choice or favourite combinations): ADHD, dumb, dumber, forgetful, easily distracted from the task at hand, perhaps leftists making a anti-weaponry point and/or seniors like me with a horrible memory.

#2  I have read of two such incidents of hand grenades being thrown but with the fuse not installed. One was in May at Mexican Federal police quarters in downtown Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

My guess is that a team is assigned the task of throwing the grenade and is given the grenade and the fuse separate for transportation purposes. Then they are instructed to assemble the grenade and then KFB.

Europe
French police arrest 11 people with suspected Islamic extremists links
FRENCH anti-terror police tonight arrested 11 people suspected of links with Muslim extremists, it has emerged.

Eight men were detained in southern towns and cities of Marseille, Aubagne, Marignane and in Bordeaux on suspicion of trafficking firearms and explosives, news website 20.minutes.fr reported.

According to French news channel LCI, three others were arrested for membership of an extremist group and being part of a cell planning to supply shelter and fake ID papers to Jihadists attempting to return to France after undergoing training on the Afghan-Pakistan border.

The arrests followed the detention on Saturday of a 28-year-old Algerian man, wanted by French police, at a train station in Naples, southern Italy.

He was allegedly carrying a bomb-making kit
and a cell phone and a computer, both no doubt with long contact lists...
and is suspected of being the head of the terror cell.

There have been widespread terror threats across Europe in recent weeks which led to the US State Department issuing a travel warning for the region Sunday.

#1  DEBKAfile says

The only country which does face imminent terrorist action is France, but this has nothing to do with the alert issued by the State Department for the European continent at large or with the US offensive against al Qaeda and Taliban havens in northwest Pakistan.

French special forces and air units have for some weeks been fighting Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - AQIM, whose tentacles have gripped Algeria, Morocco and countries of the Sahel and Sahara deserts. AQIM is trying to hit back on French soil by using Islamists of North African origin living in Europe.

The rest of the DEBKAfile article is about how the Europeans, particularly the Germans, are skeptical about the American warning of imminent attacks.

France says convicted Lebanese terrorist wont renounce action
(KUNA) -- French authorities said here Monday that convicted Lebanese terrorist Georges Ibrahim Abdallah has not renounced terrorist action and this is part of the explanation why he has not been granted parole.

Already last year, the French parole board rejected Abdallahs appeal for release after 26 years in detention. He was captured in France in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for the 1982 murder of the US military attach{ in Paris, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ray.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero pointed out that Abdallah was in jail "for assassination" and his demand for parole was rejected in May 2009.

A French Appeals Court has now followed the advisory from the parole board "believing that the legal criteria have not been fulfilled." Valero also noted that parole is not a right and decisions on commuting or reducing sentences belong to courts and not to the Justice Ministry or political powers that be.

Abdallah, a former member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), broke away from that group and formed the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Faction (LARF), which organized operations from France until the police arrested Abdallah.

The Lebanese terrorist has still continued to issue statements from his jail cell, expressing support for other convicted terrorists from other groups, especially a number of extreme leftists currently in jail in France or who have been recently released on parole.

Drone strike kills eight 'Germans' in North Waziristan
[Dawn] A suspected US dronezap killed eight hard boyz of German nationality in northwest Pakistain on Monday, Pak intelligence officials said.

They were killed when two missiles from a suspected CIA pilotless aircraft struck a mosque in Mirali in North Wazoo, the intelligence officials said.

The strikes came a day after the United States and Britain issued warnings of an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Europe.

The US State Department warned American citizens to exercise caution if travelling in Europe. Britain raised the threat level to "high" from "general" for its citizens travelling to Germany and France.

The plot that triggered the alerts involved al Qaeda and allied thugs, possibly including European citizens or residents, intelligence sources said last week.

They said the hard boyz were plotting coordinated attacks on European cities.

Western security officials said they believed a group of individuals in northern Pakistain were connected to the plot.

The United States has stepped up drone missile bombings on the Pakistain border with Afghanistan.

It is as yet unclear, however, how closely these intensified drone strikes are linked to the reported plot in Europe.

Nato helicopters from Afghanistan have also attacked thug targets within Pakistain, drawing anger in Islamabad which has condemned these as violation of illusory sovereignty.

Pakistain blocked one of the supply routes for Nato troops in Afghanistan after a helicopter strike last week killed three Pak soldiers in the western Kurram region.

Mohammad Hashim, a government official in the in the southwest district of Kalat, said the two gunnies on a motorcycle opened fire on the trucks Monday afternoon, then torched the vehicles.

Hashim says the gunnies decamped following the attack, which occurred about 100 miles (170 kilometers) south of the region's main city of Quetta. It was not clear who the attackers were.

It was the fourth attack on trucks carrying supplies destined for Nato troops in Afghanistan since Friday.

The Pak Taliban grabbed credit Monday for a larger, pre-dawn assault on fuel tankers near Islamabad and threatened more attacks.

Foreign suspects with terror plans, arms arrested in Pakistan
(Xinhua) -- At least six foreign miscreants were arrested Monday, along with cache of arms and suicide attack plans on Pakistani law enforcement seized in Hangu, Orakzai tribal area in northwest Pakistan, local sources said.

The arms include rocket launchers, Kalashnikovs, hand grenades and a large quantity of live mortar shells and bullets, according to Hangu District Police Officers (DPO).

The arrested militants were reported to be Afghan nationals, local sources said citing police. They were planning to do suicide attacks in Hangu and adjacent tribal areas in the northwest Pakistan, local sources said.

Their planned targets were police, government and law enforcement officers, sources said, adding that the police has shifted the arrested miscreants to an undisclosed location for further interrogation.

Taliban claim attacks on Nato supply convoys in Pakistan
[Dawn] Pak Taliban on Monday grabbed credit for two recent attacks on Nato supply convoys in Pakistain and threatened to carry out more, a front man said.

"We accept responsibility for the attacks on the Nato supply trucks and tankers," Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) front man Azam Tariq told AFP.

"I am talking about attacks both in Sindh and in Islamabad," he said in a telephone call from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

"We will carry out more such attacks in future. We will not allow the use of Pak soil as a supply route for Nato troops based in Afghanistan," he said.

"This is also to avenge dronezaps," he added.

Iraq
Iraq bombing attacks claim five lives
[Iran Press TV] Militants have launched multiple bombing attacks on Iraqi government, police and security officials, leaving at least five people dead and several others wounded.

A roadside bomb detonated early on Monday when a convoy transporting Iraqi Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Fuad al-Mussawi in the posh neighborhood of Jadriyah, in the center of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, AFP reported.

The official was unharmed, but the explosion killed one of his guards and left four other people wounded.

A telecommunications worker was killed and another wounded by a bomb which exploded near al-Alwiyah communications centre in Karrada, also in central Baghdad.
The bloodiest incident took place in the restive Diyala province where twin bomb blasts took the lives of three people in the town of Jalawlah.

An initial magnetic bomb attached to a car, apparently aimed at Kurdish Peshmerga security forces, detonated but did not cause any casualties.

A second bomb followed shortly afterwards when police forces were inspecting the scene of the first blast. The explosion left two policemen and a civilian killed, and wounded 18 others, including 11 police.

Jalawlah is located in a swathe of disputed land claimed both by the autonomous Kurdistan region and Iraq's central government.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Settlers blamed for mosque blaze
from AlJazeera
Palestinians say Israeli settlers in the West Bank burnt prayer rugs and Quran copies in early morning attack.

Israeli settlers are reported to have set fire to a mosque in a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank, damaging prayer rugs and a large number of copies of the Quran, as well as spraying anti-Arab graffiti on the walls.
One wonders if the deed was done by the Pals themselves. Israeli's are unlikely to burn korans and prayer rugs, but not the mosque itself. Autographing the work doesn't seem to make sense either.
According to witnesses, five Jewish settlers broke into a mosque in Beit Fajjar in the early hours of Monday and set it alight before the morning prayers, Ahmad Thawabteh, the town's mayor, told Al Jazeera.
3 am is the usual calling time for muslim shenanigans and done in time for morning prayers. Five Juices managed to burn only korans and prayer mats?
The Israeli military told Al Jazeera that primary investigations showed Hebrew graffiti and burnt carpets at the mosque, located south of Bethlehem.
if juices had done the deed, the mosque would be smoldering heap, not just cosmetic damage.
Avital Leibovitch, a spokeswoman for Israel's military, said Israeli authorities will bring the guilty parties to justice.

"The Israeli police ... have opened a very widespread investigation; the other security forces in Israel will be a part of [it], as well as Palestinian information that has some contribution to this investigation," she told Al Jazeera.
the paleostinian "contribution" will likely prove the in-house arson.
"We see this incident in a very severe manner. We will do the utmost to find these lawbreakers and bring them to court."

Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh, reporting from the mosque, said emotions are quite high in the town.

"It was a little before three in the morning when residents saw smoke coming out of the mosque, that they rushed in to put out the fire," she said. "We heard residents [break] into chants about revenge. Much of the talk here is [calling this a] religious type of attack rather than a politically motivated one."
And such incitement was the goal of the set-up.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from Jerusalem, said: "Certainly this is something that is ratcheting up tensions at a time when the Israeli cabinet are meeting to decide on extending the settlement freeze.

"A mosque was burned in the West Bank earlier this year by settlers who say it was on their land - land that they claim and occupy.

"There is certainly a pattern here. There will be a settler demonstration north of the West Bank today which is also linked to a mosque that the settlers want destroyed."

Vandals occasionally spray-paint the words "price tag" on buildings and cars, suggesting that the attacks are the "price" for any attempt by the Israeli government to curb the growth of illegal settlements.

Human-rights groups say the Israeli government does not take the attacks seriously enough. A report by Amnesty International, the London-based rights group, found that "impunity remains the norm" for settlers accused of vandalism and physical attacks on Palestinians.

#1  Possibly true - Jews are not immune to stupidity. But more possibly a cover story for a 'work accident' by some Muslim troublemakers using the mosque for its natural purpose - a weapons workshop.

.

Ah -- "human-rights groups" -- the moral midgets of the universe. Whining that vandalism is not taken seriously enough while they turn a blind eye towards out-and-out murder.

Thai court turns down US request in extradition case
(Itar-Tass) - Thailand's criminal court turned down the U.S. request not to consider extra charges against Russian citizen Viktor Bout, jugged within the case over illegal arms trade. The court's decision, made on Monday morning, will hamper the U.S. efforts to secure early extradition.

"Now there's time to prove the partiality and inappropriateness of the charges brought against me, which are also related to my first case," Bout told Itar-Tass, "I have nothing to do either with the Tajik airline or other cases the United States charged me with. My defence and I are ready to prove my innocence."

Bout noted that the situation was "unpredictable," but that "if the case is reviewed under legal norms, it might be possible to win it."

According to Bout, he hopes Thailand's parliament would take into account his address and "set up a special commission to investigate his case, in which there's a wealth of violations and "uncharted areas."

"Hopefully, we'll be able to prove the groundlessness of all the charges against me and be able to win all these cases," the businessman added.
