#2  Interesting pictures with allot of background information. Inkwell pen. Handmade crochet blouse.
Overstuffed chairs were the best. I have seen some bigger with what looks like herculon fabric. Lots of good woodwork everywhere. The fence and gate with slanted top board to let the rain run off. It appears that they rounded the boards on top corners. This appears to be depression era but
these people were well off. Now I'm guessing on the pen but I have seen the pens and wells before but the well is not visible. The very wealthy may have had the ink bladder pen.Nice secretary desk with pen notch and letter opener. Ink well may be in dark corner and usually metal with a cork stopper possibly.

That's not a bladder pen, Dale -- it's not thick enough.

#4  I should have said wooden pen with nib metal tip.
They were not quill but small wooden and narrow like a painters fine detail brush. The ones I saw looking about are bulky. The one she is using is very fine and when used properly produces a visual work of art. She has the look of a detail sort. Oh and some pens were used to put a gold trim on ceramics. I am an amateur so some of my observations may be incorrect. I look at the history around these people of the time. A time suspended snap shot.

#5  The fenced in area could have been to keep the cows out. I have seen that done before. You don't have to cut the grass on a working farm. Then the clothes don't get eaten. Mary seems to be definitely upscale.

Afghanistan
Kandahar suicide attack during funeral for Hamid Karzai's brother
A suicide bomber killed four, including a senior cleric, when he detonated inside a mosque at a memorial service for the assassinated brother of the Afghan president.

The Red Mosque in Kandahar had been packed with dignitaries and family members praying for Ahmad Wali Karzai just before the attack witnesses said.

Maulavi Hekmatullah Hekmat, head of Kandahar’s clerical council, died in the blast with three others and at least 15 were wounded.

Early reports suggested the attacker had evaded security by placing his explosives in a turban. President Hamid Karzai had not been in the mosque at the time, his palace said.

The attack came just two days after the assassination of southern Afghanistan's most powerful man and the creation of a power vacuum which many fear could escalate violence in the critical southern city.

It also followed a United Nations’ report that civilian deaths in the decade-long conflict had again hit record levels in the first six months of this year

If he's smart he'll have a pile of cash on hand and a jet out back all ready to go so he can get out of Dodge at a moment's notice. Switzerland, southern France, London. You know. Some place where he can buy some property with a big, high security fence.

Suicide Bomber Kills 5 French Soldiers in Afghanistan
A suicide bomber killed five French soldiers guarding a meeting between NATO officers and Afghan tribal elders on Wednesday morning northeast of the capital, one of the bloodiest days for French troops in Afghanistan.

The deaths, confirmed in a statement from President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, occurred just one day after he visited Kabul and announced that France would withdraw 1,000 of its approximately 4,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2012.

The suicide attack came as the President Hamid Karzai and other Afghan leaders converged in southern Afghanistan for the funeral of the president’s powerful half brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, a power broker and sometimes nettlesome ally of the American military who was assassinated by a close associate on Tuesday morning.

Afghan governor escapes bomb attack en route to funeral
[Dawn] A kaboom on Wednesday hit the motorcade of a key Afghan governor en route to the funeral of President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai's
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
brother, wounding two Afghan troops, the government said.

The governor of Helmand province, Gulab Mangal, and the provincial chief of Afghan intelligence beat feet unhurt, said an official statement, and the group attended the funeral of Ahmed Wali Karzai in neighbouring Kandahar province.

Mangal and the Helmand chief of the National Directorate of Security intelligence agency were travelling together when the bomb went kaboom! in the neighbouring province of Kandahar, where Wali Karzai was killed on Tuesday.

The bomb exploded by remote-control in the Maiwand district, wounding two soldiers attached to the NDS detached unit, the governor's office said.

Cheaply made roadside kabooms are the weapon of choice for the Taliban, fighting a nearly 10-year insurgency against Afghan and foreign forces that has been largely focused in the southern heartlands of the country.

President Hamid Karzai buried his younger half-brother in a family cemetery in the southern suburbs of Kandahar city, after the regional powerbroker was rubbed out a day earlier by a guest in his home.

Arabia
Saudi reports spike in infiltrations from Yemen
[Dawn] Saudi border guards placed in durance vile more than 19,000 infiltrators from troubled Yemen in June, nearly double the number caught the month before, a front man said Wednesday.

The sharp increase comes as Yemen's security situation is rapidly unraveling. Yemen's president is being challenged by a five-month-old popular uprising that has emboldened al-Qaeda-linked beturbanned goons in the south of the country.

Yemenis routinely try to sneak into Soddy Arabia, its wealthy northern neighbor, in search of jobs. Saudi border guards usually send them back, though smugglers among the infiltrators are put on trial.

Saudi border guards have clashed several times with al-Qaeda beturbanned goons crossing the border between Yemen and Soddy Arabia's southern Jazan border region.

Col. Abdullah bin Mahfouz, front man for Saudi's border command, said Wednesday that 19,145 infiltrators and 433 smugglers were placed in durance vile in June, virtually all from Yemen. Guards confiscated dozens of weapons, along with ammunition and drugs, the front man said.

In May, just over 10,000 infiltrators were caught, according to government figures.Last year, some 180,000 Yemenis were caught trying to sneak into Soddy Arabia.

Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, has a population of nearly 24 million.

#1  180,000/year in 2010 is 15,000/month on average for the year. If May, 2011 saw only 10,000, and June saw a little over 19,000, then for these two months the average is around last year's average. It takes three consecutive measurements to show a trend, not a single data point....especially when we don't know the normal month-to-month variation.

Republican Guard Fires at Yemen Protest, No Casualties
Republican guards fired live bullets and teargas to disperse a massive demonstration in Yemen's southern province of Taiz on Wednesday, but no casualties were reported.

Tens of thousands erupted into the streets to call for the ouster of the remaining officials of the Saleh regime, urge an immediate transitional council and condemn the military operations in the province.

Several Yemeni cities also witnessed demonstrations to condemn external interventions in the Yemeni affairs and urge a transitional council to put an end to the 33-year rule of President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...

In the past few weeks, the elite republican guards has heavily shelled some parts of Taiz after armed tribal people flooded into the city to defend the freedom square, where hundreds of thousands of people have been conducting an anti-government sit-in.

Many civilians and soldiers have been killed and injured, families displaced and houses destroyed.

There were also reports that regime militias have recently been active arresting and kidnapping organizers and activists at the freedom square.

Separately, a number of security members have been tossed in the slammer on charges of joining and supporting the popular youth-led uprising.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, Zebulon finally found just the friend he'd been looking for...
the youth-led protests in Yemeni cities have revealed escalation plans to continue their uprising peacefully and until its goals are achieved. The escalation plans included holding daily protests amid reports that a U.S.-Saudi power-sharing deal is underway.

Saudi Dismantles Group Plotting to Overthrow Regime
[An Nahar] Saudi authorities have dismantled an al-Qaeda-linked group of 16 people plotting to overthrow the regime, the Saudi-funded Asharq Al-Awsat daily reported on Wednesday.

The "secret organization" aimed to "gain power with the aid of foreign intelligence services," Asharq Al-Awsat quoted a front man for the justice ministry as saying, without specifying the country of origin of the intelligence services in question.

According to the front man, Abdullah al-Saadan, the group had contacts with Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

A number of its members were tossed in the slammer during a February 2007 meeting in the western port city of Jeddah, he said.

The group, which called itself the "project of the generation," also engaged in collecting funds under the guise of charitable activities, which were in fact destined for "suspicious foreign parties," Saadan said.

Legal action is being pursued against the group's members.

Britain
Second Night of Riots in Northern Ireland
[An Nahar] A second night of rioting broke out in Northern Ireland at the height of the Protestant marching season, with coppers attacked and numerous people locked away, police said Wednesday.

Petrol bombs, bricks, bottles and fireworks were thrown at officers and cars were set alight in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, and riot police responded by firing baton rounds and water cannons.

Police said some officers were briefly set on fire when they were hit by petrol bombs.

There was also trouble in south Belfast, where two parked cars were set on fire and a member of the public was hit by thrown masonry. Three young people and two adult men were locked away, police said.

Seven men were locked away as disorder also broke out in the city of Derry.

Thousands of members of the Protestant Orange orders walk the streets every July 12 to commemorate the 1690 Battle of the Boyne victory of the Protestant king William III of Orange over the Catholic king James II.

There are often festivities as they pass through Catholic, nationalist areas.

Twenty-two coppers were maimed in rioting in Belfast on Monday night when the loyal orders began lighting bonfires, the signal for the start of the Twelfth.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay, speaking on Monday, said the vast majority of parades across Northern Ireland passed off peacefully. He condemned the "pockets" of disorder as "totally unacceptable".

Internet terror quiz man bailed
(KUNA) -- A 21-year-old un-named man set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock on suspicion of disseminating terrorist publications on the internet has been sprung on police bail, British police said Wednesday.

The suspect, who was jugged in Birmingham, central England, yesterday by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, was released pending further inquiries.

West Midlands Police said yesterday that a computer and other electronic equipment had been seized from the man's home for forensic examination.

The force also confirmed that the arrest was not made in response to any immediate threat.

Classroom chemistry: work accident in Indonesian Islamic boarding school
Ay Pee summarized: Teacher in private Islamic boarding school blew himself up while demonstrating bomb making techniques to students. Students and staff blocked entry of police while trying to sneak body out on school bus. Eleven people have been taken in for questioning, and presumably the body of Instructor Firdaus, age 30, has been sent to the local Dr. Quincy for examination. It may be that the former Mr. Firdaus learnt his craft in Mindanao, The Philippines.
