Afghanistan
Deadly Attack Foiled in Paktiya
[Tolo News] According to Afghan security officials a deadly attack foiled Tuesday night by national army special forces in the capital of Paktiya province.

National army first unit front man, Ahmad Jawed Salim, told TOLOnews " a group of 20 forces of Evil who were trying to conduct suicide and group attacks similar to the attack in Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province in Gardez capital of Paktiya were foiled in an army special forces operation which was launched Tuesday night around 10 p.m. and ended about 12 a.m.".

According to Salim, during this operation 19 Taliban forces of Evil were killed and one other was maimed.

During the operations heavy and light weapons were seized by the Afghan forces, Salim said.

It comes after at least 89 non-combatants were killed and nearly 50 others maimed on Tuesday when a jacket wallah detonated his explosive-laden truck in a marketplace in Argon district in eastern Paktika province, bordering Pakistain.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a crowded bazaar on Tuesday morning, destroying dozens of mud-made stores and erupting fire in several shops.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior blamed the Taliban for the attack, a blame the Taliban rejected.

Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
and the UN have condemned the attack in the strongest terms and linked the action to the enemies of Afghanistan.

Religious scholar Mawlawi Hedayat condemned the attack, saying it was against Islam's principles, particularly during the month of Ramadan.

Tripoli airport under fire for 4th straight day
[Al Ahram] Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
international airport came under rocket fire Wednesday for a fourth straight day, in attacks aimed at ousting anti-Islamist fighters who control the facility, a Libyan security official said.

"The airport was again targeted by mortar fire and rockets for several hours," the official said, asking not to be named.

An AFP photographer said the bombing sparked fires around the airport, setting ablaze a cargo plane on the tarmac and a customs warehouse, sending firefighters into action.

Islamist militias have since Sunday unleashed dozens of rockets at Tripoli airport, damaging around a dozen planes and closing down Libya's main air link with the outside world.

An airport official said Wednesday that the facility, controlled by liberal ex-rebels from Zintan, southwest of the capital, would probably remain shut for "several weeks, if not months".

The Zintan fighters, in control of the airport for the past three years, have deployed armoured cars and pickups on access roads to head off any ground attack.

On Monday, the airport in the country's third city Misrata was also forced to shut down because it is linked to the control tower in Tripoli.

But flights resumed on Tuesday night at Misrata and also at Miitiga military airport in the suburbs of Tripoli, allowing Libyans stranded at airports around the world to return.

With liberal and Islamist militias locked in a deadly power struggle, the Libyan government has said it is considering calling for international forces to help restore security.

Two killed in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] A Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
sergeant and a retired special forces soldier turned imam are there latest victims of violence in Benghazi.

A doctor at Benghazi Medical Centre informed the Libya Herald that Mohammed Al-Shahoubi, a sergeant in the Saiqa Special Forces, died last night at the hospital. He was taken to the hospital after sustaining a critical injury during the recent festivities that occurred at Jalaa Hospital between the Saiqa and Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
Ansar al-Sharia has been occupying the hospital. On Monday, Saiqa forces attacked, attempting to drive Ansar forces away from the hospital. The attack resulted in seven dead and 35 injured.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Standing Buffalo drew a bead on his old enemy and squeezed the trigger...
Sheikh Rajab Itloba was killed in a kaboom early this morning. He had just finished dawn prayers at the Malik Mosque in the Al-Sabri neighbourhood when a bomb that had been placed beneath his car detonated. A doctor at Benghazi Medical Centre confirmed that the imam had been hit by shrapnel, resulting in his death. A friend who was with him was also struck and is receiving treatment at the hospital.

Itloba was formerly a soldier in the Saiqa Special Forces, and had become an Imam after retiring from military service

Alleged US Benghazi consulate attacker found dead
[Libya Herald] A man accused of involvement in the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, in which ambassador Chris Stevens and three colleagues were slain, has himself been found dead, apparently murdered.

Faraj Al-Shibli, who was last seen in the hands of a local militia in the eastern town of Marj, was found dead at dawn on Tuesday just outside of the town, his body showing signs of torture. He is the second Benghazi suspect to surface over the past few weeks, after US forces seized the alleged leader of the attack, Ahmed Abu Khattalah, outside Benghazi last month.

Back in March 2013, Shibli was taken into custody by the Libyan government in connection with the Benghazi attack.

The US FBI was given the opportunity to question him. He was released two months later for undisclosed reasons.

He was known to have been a member of the Libyan Islamist Fighting Group (LIFG), which fought for the overthrow of Qadaffy in the 1990s.

Malaysia Airlines jet shot down in Ukraine
A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane with 295 aboard was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in Ukraine near the Russian border, according to multiple reports.

The airline, the same one whose plane disappeared over the Indian Ocean in March, confirmed only that "an incident" had occurred involving the Boeing 777, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.

Multiple reports said the plane was shot down at cruising altitude. Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister told The Associated press that the plane, carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew people onboard, was shot down.

Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

#9  People I know say the "rebels" got a Buk system in June. That has the reach 18000m. And the leader Strelkov said this morning "We warned Ukraine not to fly in our skies", and about an hour before the reports came in, rebel forces were claiming a shoot down of Ukrainian aircraft.

Inexperienced crew can make serious targeting errors, and without proper command discipline its entirely possible to target civilian airliners.

In other words:the rebels did it, and they did it with Russian supplied weapons which required high level political approval, this blood is on Putin's hands, and on the hands of the savages of people who encouraged the rebels with bigoted nationalistic bullshit.

#11  So do they have any proof it was shot down and not a bomb or something else? Video of the launcher or missile?
Posted by: 49 Pan || 07/17/2014 13:56 Comments || Top||

#12  For those not in the know, the Buk is a mobile SA11 platform. Tracked vehicle. Fairly robust but not a simple system. Its not going to be operational except when manned by trained personnel. So there is very likely direct Russian military involvment in this. And as I pointed out, this is not send in rifles or Mmanpad sa7 to some rabble. This took direct political decision making likely at the highest levels to transfer these weapon systems to the so called rebels.

Putin lost his mind. And unlike before, there is no american president to hold the indane bear in check. Obama is a disaster.

#13  They've found the debris field 49pan. 7 miles long. That's a mid-air explosion, so either a bomb or shot down. Also I'd like to point out, confirmed, 23 US citizens were on that flight.

p.s. Wasn't there a certain Iranian Boeing?
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 07/17/2014 14:59 Comments || Top||

#22  So Russia got the black boxes. Boeing better have it's lawyers on line, you can bet the data will be doctored. It will really show nothing much anyway. The crew will have never known it was being fired on, there is no system on the aircraft to detect it, the data will only show catastrophic failure of all systems on the airframe. Russia could doctor the data to show a system failure. They will have to reassemble the aircraft and the odds of this are zero...

#23  The rise of direct great circle routes puts aircraft everywhere. Check out traffic pic on AoS site. A Thai Airways plane did a diversion and took a 30 deg right turn. Diverting around a war zone in Ukraine will involve a lot of traffic. Looks like it would have been prudent but was apparently never done.

For most people hearing about this sort of thing with Isreal and Gaza is like ordinary news. But a jetliner show down by rebels in a warzone, with probably a dozen nationalities on board? Yeah, that will make NEWS.

I believe the rebels made a mistake. A stupid one. As did the airline for flying through the zone. That doesn't absolve either of those entities from being guilty though. And Russia by proxy through the rebels.

What will be telling is where the plane pieces go from here. Kiev, and through there to european. asian, and american investigators. Or Moscow, in which case who knows when we'll get access.

Europe
Ukraine: Russian rocket may have downed military plane
[CBSNEWS] A Ukrainian military transport plane was shot down Monday along the country's eastern border with Russia, the defense minister said.

Rebels in conflict-wracked eastern Ukraine immediately grabbed credit for downing the Antonov AN-26 but Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey said the rocket may have been fired from Russia.

Heletey said the plane was flying at an altitude of 21,300 feet, which he said was too high to be reached with the weapons used by the separatists fighting government troops.
Ukrainian authorities say plane may have been carrying around 20 people but there was no immediate word on casualties.

In the last two weeks, the government has halved the territory held by pro-Russia separatists, who have been forced back into strongholds around the eastern cities of Luhansk and Donetsk. Those two mostly Russian-speaking regions have declared independence from the government in Kiev.

Malaysian Plane 'Shot Down' With 295 On Board
[NEWS.SKY] A plane which crashed in eastern Ukraine with 295 people on board was reportedly shot down as it flew through airspace deemed unsuitable for passenger jets.

The Malaysia Airlines plane, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 33,000 feet (10,000 metres) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported.

An adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry told the news agency the Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, killing all 280 passengers and 15 crew members.

'Over 500 suspected members of banned outfits arrested in Pakistan'
[DAWN] More than 500 suspected holy warriors belonging to banned outfits have been nabbed by the security forces from across Pakistain including the federal capital, an official of the interior ministry revealed on Wednesday.

Speaking to BBC Urdu on condition of anonymity, the official said these detainees would be treated under the newly legislated Protection of Pakistain Act (PPA) 2014.

The arrests have been made against the backdrop of ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb in North Wazoo to curb the likely backlash from the Death Eaters.

According to the interior ministry official, more than 300 suspects were jugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
from the Punjab province mainly from Bahawalpur while more than 100 were arrested from Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
and around 150 from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
and Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
.

A report sent to the federal government by the intelligence agencies cited most number of Taliban and their sympathizers were settled in Karachi after North and South Waziristan tribal agencies bordering Afghanistan, the official revealed.

Law enforcement and secret agencies have apprised the interior ministry and Nacta — newly formed government body mandated to form the country's anti-terrorism policy — about the crackdown against banned outfits.

It may be mentioned that the Islamabad High Court (IHC), invalidating a notification to bring the Nacta under the interior ministry, had recently ordered it to work under the Prime Minister Secretariat.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
intelligence units, formed at the cop shoppe level in the federal capital to eliminate networks of criminals, have started functioning. As many as 36 police officials have been deputed in the intelligence units.

According to the police, the units have been formed in all cop shoppes, while two officials from each of the 18 stations in Islamabad have been chosen to make up a team that will trace the networks of criminals.

This two-member unit at each station will perform the executive functions of intelligence gathering and will keep their station house officers (SHO) and senior officers in the loop regarding the activities in their own areas. They will also highlight the aspects that require special attention from the police force.

According to the intelligence report, a large number of rustics were living on the outskirts of Islamabad in Tarnol and Bara Kahu areas. Police and officials of Nadra, however, were yet to visit the areas to conduct a survey.

Air strikes in Shawal kill 35 suspects
[DAWN] War planes bombed suspected myrmidon hideouts in Shawal mountains and eliminated 35 gunnies early on Wednesday morning, hours after local people said a US drone strike killed 20, mostly foreigners, in Dattakhel area
... which is owned and operated by Hafiz Gul Behadur...
of North Wazoo.

A security bigshot said the jets targeted gunnies in the forested Shawal Valley.

According to an intelligence official, 35 gunnies were killed in air strikes carried out in Degan, Saeedabad, Manzarkhel and Dattakhel.

He said the Shawal bombing had forced gunnies to flee their hideouts. Fifteen 'Punjabi' gunnies fleeing the bombing in pickup trucks were captured by security forces in Birmal and taken to Wana camp in South Waziristan.

"The bombing is having an effect. The gunnies are feeling the heat. These are the ones who fled the military operation in Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
and Mirali," the official said. "It is a mixed bag of local and foreign myrmidons," he added.

Local residents said the US drone fired four missiles into a compound and a vehicle in Zoi Saidgai, about 45km west of regional headquarters Miranshah, killing 20 myrmidons.

They said that 12 of those killed were foreigners of central Asian origin and eight local myrmidons.

According to an official, the foreigners were members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

A security official confirmed the drone attack which, he said, was carried out close to the Afghan border.

There was, however, some confusion over the timing of the two strikes.

The area is a stronghold of myrmidon commander Hafiz Gul Bahadar, who once had a peace agreement with the government, but has now seen a spate of bombings by jets as security forces move towards Dattakhel.

Military officials said that 30 soldiers, including two officers, had bit the dust since the army launched the Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan on June 15. More than 400 gunnies were killed, the officials said, though there has been no independent confirmation about the claim.

Three soldiers died in an ambush near Boya on Tuesday and two others in a gunbattle with gunnies in Mirali on the first day of the ground offensive in what once was a myrmidon hotbed, a security official said.

The military claimed it had cleared Miranshah and was now clearing Mirali in a phased manner.

Most gunnies have fled the town but fire-raids, including rocket and mortar attacks, continued, the official said.

Security forces are now moving on two fronts — westwards on Dattakhel road and eastwards in Mirali.

Though Mirali, like Miranshah, is now deserted, it still has remnants of gunnies here and there, sniping and attacking security forces, an official said, referring to the attack on Tuesday which resulted in the death of two soldiers.

More than 900,000 people have left North Waziristan. Several thousand others have taken refuge in Afghanistan.

According to Rooters, a high-ranking military official denied that the United States was responsible for the drone attack. He did not elaborate.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the Pak military had no confirmation there had been a US drone strike.

Pakistain publicly condemns the US drones strikes saying they often kill civilians and are a violation of illusory sovereignty.

But some officials, including a former president, have said the military has secretly approved them in the past.

Iraq
Islamic State's Saudi 'mufti' slain in Iraq
[ARABNEWS] A Saudi mufti with the Islamic State (IS or Daesh) has been killed in Iraq by the country's armed forces, says an Iraqi news site, quoting an Iraqi military commander.

"Daesh mufti Abu Osama Al-Qahtani was killed inside a building in Baiji, Tikrit, along with four of his assistants in an air raid that targeted an IS meeting on Tuesday," Lt. Gen. Ali Al-Freiji, commander in Saladin province, was quoted by Waradana as saying.

Al-Qahtani apparently succeeded another Saudi, Othman Al-Asiri, as mufti of the bad boy Islamic State, after Al-Asiri was killed in Syria last year.

Al-Asiri, who had a Ph.D. in jurisprudence, was previously fired from the faculty of King Khalid University in Abha for sympathizing with the Al-Qaeda network. Al-Asiri had also been previously placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in the Kingdom for killing seven people in a car accident.

Sources said Al-Asiri had joined IS and had held several training sessions for group members in Aleppo and Latakia prior to his death.

Earlier reports said a number of Saudi snuffies have quit the Islamic State movement after they were disillusioned with the group's activities.

Known previously as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), the group had been engaged in a deadly rivalry with other Sunni groups fighting to topple the government of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
.

It had executed or assassinated fighters of rival Islamist groups, such as the Nusra Front, and the Western-backed moderate groups.

Led by an ambitious Iraqi murderous Moslem known as His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, the Islamic State group unilaterally declared the establishment of an Islamic state, or caliphate, in the lands it has seized in Syria and Iraq. It proclaimed Al-Baghdadi the head of its new self-styled state and demanded that all Moslems pledge allegiance to him.

Iraqi army retreats from Tikrit
[Dhaka Tribune] Iraqi forces have withdrawn from the Lion of Islam-held city of Tikrit after their new offensive met heavy resistance, in a blow to the government effort to push back Sunni holy warriors controlling large parts of the country.

The failure highlights the difficulties of Baghdad's struggle to recapture territory from the holy warriors who seized djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Tikrit and other cities last month in a rapid offensive which threatens to fragment Iraq on ethnic and sectarian lines.

The setback came as Iraqi politicians named a moderate Sunni Islamist as speaker of parliament on Tuesday. That was a long-delayed first step towards a power-sharing government urgently needed to confront the Lion of Islams, who are led by the al Qaeda offshoot Islamic State.

It is unclear if the election of Salim al-Jabouri as speaker will break the broader deadlock over Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's bid to serve a third term. He has ruled since the April election as a caretaker.

Government troops and allied Shi'ite volunteer fighters retreated from Tikrit before sunset on Tuesday to a base four km (2.5 miles) south after coming under heavy mortar and sniper fire, a soldier who fought in the battle said.

Residents said there was no fighting on Wednesday morning in Tikrit, which lies 160 km (100 miles) north of Baghdad. It is a stronghold of ex-army officers and loyalists of executed former dictator Saddam Hussein's Baath Party who allied themselves with the Islamic State-led offensive last month.

Tuesday's military attack was launched from Awja, Saddam's birthplace some 8 km (5 miles) south of the city, but ran into heavy opposition in the southern part of the city.

Pictures published on Twitter by supporters of the Islamic State showed a fighter holding a black Islamist flag next to a black armoured car it said had been abandoned by a military SWAT team, as well as vehicles painted in desert camouflage — one of them burnt out — which it said retreating troops left behind.

Maliki's future unclear

The stunning advance in the north and west by the faceless myrmidons over the past month has put Iraq's very survival in jeopardy, as its politicians remain divided over forming a government to confront the insurgency.

A shared resentment at Maliki's style of rule, which his critics say has marginalised Iraq's Sunnis and Kurds, may have bolstered the Islamic State's offensive last month.

The Shi'ite leader has defied demands from Sunnis and Kurds that he step aside for a less polarising figure. He also faces challenges from within the National Alliance, a Shi'ite umbrella group that includes Maliki's State of Law bloc and rivals.

After quickly picking Salim al-Jabouri as speaker on Tuesday afternoon, politicians argued bitterly for hours over his Shi'ite deputy, suggesting they are still far from a deal to complete the formation of a new government or a decision on the fate of Maliki.

Lebanon Arrests 2 Palestinians For Rocket Fire At Israel, Another Elsewhere For Same
[IsraelTimes] Two Paleostinian brothers suspected of involvement in rocket attacks on northern Israel have been tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
by the Lebanese army, the military said on Wednesday.

"Khalil and Hassan Kharraz were arrested on Tuesday. They admitted to transporting rockets on July 13 and 14 to the area from where they were launched" at Israel, the army said in a statement.

Between July 11 and 14, during the ongoing war between Israel and Gazoo, run by the Paleostinian terror group Hamas, at least nine rockets were fired from south Leb toward the Jewish state.
Between July 11 and 14, during the ongoing war between Israel and Gazoo, run by the Paleostinian terror group Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, at least nine rockets were fired from south Leb toward the Jewish state.

The Israeli army has retaliated by firing scores of shells at Lebanese territory.

On Friday morning, three rockets that were fired from Leb landed near Kfar Yuval, between the northern Israeli towns of Metulla and Kiryat Shmona, close to the Israeli border and some 200 kilometers from Tel Aviv. Fragments from one of the rockets were later found in an open area near Kiryat Shmona.

A short while later, Lebanese army sappers located and dismantled at least two rockets that were prepared for launch. A Lebanese military front man said the weapons seemed to have malfunctioned, Walla reported.

A trail of blood and a ripped shoe were later found at the site, Lebanese media reported. The army said it had arrested one man in connection to the firing of the three rockets.
A trail of blood and a ripped shoe were later found at the site, Lebanese media reported. The army said it had arrested one man in connection to the firing of the three rockets.

The IDF responded with heavy artillery fire toward the area where the rocket was launched, according to an army front man. At least 25 artillery shells reportedly slammed the outskirts of the Lebanese town of Kfar Shuba.

There were no reports of injuries or damage, on either the Israeli or the Lebanese sides of the border.

According to Lebanese media, the rockets were launched from the village of Hasbaya, in the south of the country, and the group behind the attack had yet to take responsibility. Defense officials in Israel asserted that the rockets were likely Katyushas fired by a Paleostinian group that identifies with Hamas.

Following the rocket attack, IDF officials filed a complaint with UNIFIL, the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
Interim Force in Leb. UNIFIL front man Andrea Tenenti said the organization was looking into the incidents, according to Lebanese media.

On Saturday, local Israeli councils on the Lebanese border ordered the opening of public bomb shelters after three rockets were fired at the Upper Galilee.

One of the rockets landed in a warehouse in a northern village, another in an open field and the third didn't clear the Lebanese border.

Hamas reported that it was responsible for the rocket fire.
Hamas reported that it was responsible for the rocket fire, which Israeli sources noted did not appear to be launched by the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

Later in the week, on Monday, a third barrage of rockets was fired from across the northern border, from an area just south of Tyre, Lebanese media reported.

In both cases, the IDF responded with artillery fire directed at the location where the rockets were launched.

IDF Nabs 13 Terrorists Entering Israel Through Terror Tunnel
The IDF authorized for publication Thursday morning that soldiers had successfully prevented a major terrorist incursion into Israel by Gaza Arab terrorists. The terrorists had attempted to sneak into Israel via a terror tunnel. The terrorists had managed to dig their way into a kibbutz near the border, IDF officials said.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, the army said, IDF soldiers identified a group of 13 terrorists attempting to enter Israel via a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. The tunnel was one of several the IDF had recently uncovered that were to be used to smuggle terrorists into Israeli cities.

IDF soldiers attacked the group. Several fatalities were reported. The tunnel has been destroyed, as well. No IDF soldiers were injured.
Ynet adds:
Terrorists of foiled attack in Gaza Border carried RPG rockets, abduction attacks means

IDF reported Wednesday that the terrorists who tried to infiltrate Israel via a tunnel in Kerem Shalom area and conduct a massive terror attack, were carrying various types of weapons including eight RPG rockets, hundreds of small-arms ammunition, grenades, bulletproof vests and abduction attacks means such as Isolierband insulating tape.

Flyers and text messages over Gazoo
[ARABNEWS] The Israeli military dropped flyers and sent text messages Wednesday warning 100,000 people in northeastern Gazoo to evacuate their homes ahead of an air campaign targeting "terror sites and operatives" in Zeitun and Shejaiya, two flashpoint districts east of Gazoo City.

An identical message was sent to Beit Lahiya in the north.

But for patients at Al-Wafa hospital in Shejaiya, the warning simply provoked even more fear.

"There is no place safe in Gazoo," director Basman Alashi told AFP, adding that most of his patients were completely incapacitated.

"If a hospital is not safe, where is?" he said as the sound of nearby shelling rattled the windows.

Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, dismissed the warning as a scare tactic, telling residents there was "no need to worry."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Tuesday to step up the military campaign after Hamas dismissed an Egyptian cease-fire proposal, firing scores of rockets over the border despite the army holding its fire for six hours.

"This would have been better resolved diplomatically... but Hamas leaves us no choice but to expand and intensify the campaign against it," he said.

His security cabinet authorized the call-up of another 8,000 reservists, media reports said, joining 43,000 reserve troops who have already been mobilized.

Azzam Al-Ahmad, a senior member of Abbas's Fatah movement, said a Hamas official was in Cairo to hold talks with Egyptian officials.

Ahmad expressed hope that the talks in Cairo would "crystallize a definite formula for an Egyptian initiative" or clarify its initial plan, which had proposed an end to hostilities from Tuesday.

In a joint news conference with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, visiting Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said she hoped that Hamas would "revise its position and accept the proposal in the coming hours or days."

Abbas himself later arrived in Cairo to join the diplomatic efforts and was slated to travel to Ankara on Thursday in search of regional support for an immediate end to the fighting.

Israel, Hamas agree Gaza truce as death toll hits 223
[ARABNEWS] Israel and Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, have agreed to a UN request to halt hostilities for five hours on humanitarian grounds on Thursday, while efforts continue to broker a longer-term truce.

The sides announced the temporary lull in fighting across the Gazoo border after an Israeli strike killed four children on a beach in the coastal strip on Wednesday.

A punishing Israeli offensive aimed at halting rocket fire into Israel by Gazoo faceless myrmidons had resumed after previous Egyptian-brokered truce efforts collapsed Tuesday.

Israel's campaign, which entered its 10th day on Thursday, has killed 223 Paleostinians so far, with a Gazoo-based human rights

group saying over 80 percent of them were civilians.
...For a given definition of civilian where 70% of them were actually Hamas or other fighters out of uniform.
In the same period, faceless myrmidons have fired more than 1,200 rockets at Israel. They claimed their first Israeli life on Tuesday.

The army said early on Thursday that 82 rockets had hit Israel during the course of Wednesday and more than 30 were intercepted by Israel's missile defenses.

Hamas had rejected intitial Egyptian efforts for a full cease-fire, saying it had not been included in the discussions.

The Israeli army announced it would halt its bombardment of Gazoo between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. (0700 to 1200 GMT) Thursday, following a UN request for a humanitarian truce.

Hamas later followed suit.

"The Paleostinian factions agreed to accept the offer from the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
for a cooling-down on the ground for five hours starting from 10 in the morning," front man Sami Abu Zukhri told AFP.

But in the early hours of Thursday Israeli air strikes continued to shake Gazoo and rockets kept flying into Israel, each side said.
