ISIL Claims to Have Beheaded Croatian Hostage in Egypt
[ALMANAR.LB] The Takfiri

in Iraq and Levant), claimed Wednesday to have beheaded a Croatian hostage kidnapped in Egypt, posting a purported picture of the victim's body on ISIL-affiliated Twitter accounts.

The Croat, Tomislav Salopek, was kidnapped last month west of the capital Cairo. The Takfiris had issued a 48-hour deadline that ended last Friday threatening to kill him if Moslem women prisoners were not released from Egyptian jails.

The picture's authenticity could not be immediately verified.

His abduction and purported killing were unprecedented in Egypt, which is battling an ISIL insurgency in the eastern Sinai Peninsula.

State-run Croatian news agency HINA quoted a foreign ministry source as saying it "does not have confirmation that kidnapped Croatian citizen Tomislav Salopek has been killed."

The picture was posted on ISIL-affiliated Twitter accounts with the caption: "Execution of prisoner from Croatia -- which has participated in war on Islamic State -- after deadline ended," referring to ISIL.

Salopek, a 31-year-old father of two, had been working with French geoscience company CGG when kidnapped from a car roughly 22 kilometers west of Cairo, security sources told AFP.
Al Ahram pointed out it's Egyptian IS affiliate Ansar Bayt al Maqdis, not ISIS proper.

Boko Haram Has Been 'Decapitated', Says Chadian Leader
Literally, it will be claimed when we reach the buried lede, dear Reader. Be patient but a little while.
[AnNahar] Chad's President Idriss Deby declared Tuesday that efforts to combat neighboring Nigeria's Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadists had succeeded in "decapitating" the group and would be wrapped up "by the end of the year".

Addressing news hounds in the capital N'Djamena on the 55th anniversary of Chad's independence from La Belle France, Deby said: "Boko Haram is decapitated. There are little groups (of Boko Haram members) scattered throughout east Nigeria, on the border with Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
. It is within our power to definitively overcome Boko Haram."

"The war will be short, with the setting up of the regional force, it will be over by the end of the year," Deby added, referring to a new five-country force aimed at ending Boko Haram's bloody six-year Islamist insurgency that he said would be "operational in a few days".

Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria have all pledged troops towards the new force.
Your patience will now be rewarded, dear Reader, as we have finally reached the lede at long last:
Deby further claimed that Boko Haram was no longer led by the fearsome Abubakar Shekau and that his successor was open to talks.
Talks are lovely, of course, especially if there are especially nice tea cakes and caviar in the offing, but surrender's the thing, not a mere hudna while the Lions of Islam rest and rearm.
"There is someone apparently called Mahamat Daoud who is said to have replaced Abubakar Shekau and he wants to negotiate with the Nigerian government.

"For my part, I would advise not to negotiate with a terrorist," Deby, whose country has been spearheading the regional fightback against Boko Haram, said.

While claiming progress in the fight against the jihadists, who have repeatedly hit border areas of Cameroon, Chad and Niger, and wrought havoc in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, Deby admitted that jacket wallahs still posed a threat.

In the past few week, suicide bombers, many of them women, have staged several attacks in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad.

The challenge, Deby said, was to "avoid terrorist acts and that's why we must organize at the regional level to prevent bomb-making materials and other explosives entering our countries."

#1  Much of this may be bluster but the Boko Haram's worst nightmare occurred when Chadian troops entered the fray. Boko Haram is no way the match for the Chad force which is composed in great part by Toubou and Zaghawa, two ethnicities that were born to fight. Many are Sufi of the Sanussi tariqa, and heterodox Muslims. Thus, they are not easily suborned as the Islamists in Khartoum well know.

Arabia
Gulf-backed government loyalists advance in Yemen
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] Saudi-backed forces loyal to Yemen's exiled government captured more territory from Iran-backed rebels Tuesday as they pressed an advance that has seen them retake large parts of the country's south.

Aid agencies voiced alarm over the "catastrophic" humanitarian situation in the impoverished nation, devastated by months of fighting.

The gains by forces backing President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi have been aided by weapons and troops from Gulf countries, as Saudi-led coalition warplanes continue to pound rebel positions.

The Popular Resistance Committees, comprising pro-government fighters, Sunni tribes and southern separatists, seized overnight the town of Utmah, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of capital Sanaa, military officials said.

The town is in the Shiite majority province of Dhammar, which borders Sanaa province, where Iran-backed rebels have held the capital since September.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie sadly admitted that he was a better peeping Tom than he was a comedian...
fierce festivities between local pro-government militia and the rebels rocked Arhab, just 25 kilometres north of Sanaa, military sources said.

"Sanaa is the real target" of the advancing pro-Hadi forces, said analyst Mustafa al-Ani, from the Gulf Research Centre.

Bangladesh
Police probe admits Niloy visited police station before murder
[Dhaka Tribune] A police probe into reports that Niladri Chatterjee Niloy had been rebuffed by police as he attempted to file a general diary (GD), has admitted that the slain blogger had made at least one visit to a cop shoppe.

Despite finding evidence from an analysis of Niloy's phone records, the probe body could not confirm the reason for his visit to the station.

Known as Niloy Neel on blogging platforms and on Facebook, Niladri posted accounts of his difficulties with filing a GD despite telling police that he feared he was in danger.

He was hacked to death with machetes by four person or persons unknown at his home in Dhaka around 1:30pm last Friday.

A police official asking not to be named, said Niloy's cell phone showed evidence of activity in the Khilgaon cop shoppe area on the date when it is claimed he attempted to file a GD.

"However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
that does not prove he was there to file a GD. We are still investigating."

A three-member police probe body led by Tareq Bin Rashid, additional deputy commissioner of Motijheel division police, submitted its preliminary report to the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The probe body recommended that action be taken against the Khilgaon cop shoppe officer-in-charge and duty officer who were on duty when Niloy visited.

Anowar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Motijheel division police, said a preliminary report had been sent tot the deputy commissioner of DMP headquarters containing proof that Niloy had been at the cop shoppe.

"If it is proven that Niloy was there to file a GD and the police refused to take it, those responsible will be held to account," he said.

Caucasus Islamist Leader Killed in Russian Raid
[AnNahar] The leader of a Caucasus Islamist group in Russia's restive Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. region has been killed in a mountain raid that included air strikes, Russian security services and Islamists said Tuesday.

Four people died in the operation by Russia's special forces and military, Dagestan's interior ministry said.

The current leader of the Caucasus Emirate group, Magomed Suleimanov, was among those killed, the National Anti-terrorist Committee (NAK) said in a statement to Russian news agencies.

Insurgent website Kavkaz Center also said that Suleimanov, 39, was killed in the course of a two-day raid near the mountain village of Gimry which included strikes from helicopters.

The Caucasus Emirate group had claimed several major attacks on Russian soil in recent years, including the Domodedovo airport bombing, which killed 27 people, and more recently twin blasts in the southern city of Volgograd which killed 34.

Suleimanov's biography on myrmidon websites says he was educated in the Al-Fatih Islamic Institute in Damascus after which he began recruiting fighters in his home village Gimry.

He orchestrated several attacks in the region, including a suicide kaboom that killed respected Moslem holy man Said Afandi in his home along with seven others in 2012.

Iran closes key crossing with Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] Iran says it has closed its biggest ground crossing with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in the wake of a series of violent attacks on Iranian vehicles.

"The Gurbulak-Bazargan crossing has been unilaterally closed in the direction from Iran to Turkey," Iranian Road and Urban Planning Deputy Minister Davud Kesaverziyan said in a written statement on Aug 12, citing an attack on an Iranian truck in Turkish territories.

Kesaverziyan said the closing was decided upon Turkey's request and the door was still open from Turkey to Iran.

Kesaverziyan has met with Turkish Ambassador to Iran Riza Hakan Tekin on a series of recent violent attacks on Iranian vehicles, he added.
Subsequently, according to An Nahar:
Iran Ministry Denies Closure of Border Crossing to Turkey

Iran denied claims it had closed its main border crossing into The Sick Man of Europe Turkey Wednesday after an Iranian truck was torched in a fresh attack on vehicles entering from the Islamic republic.

"All the country's land borders... including the one in Bazargan, are open and traffic is passing through," interior ministry Director General Majid Agha-Babaie said.

"None of the border (crossings) are closed and none will be," he added in remarks carried by state news agency IRNA.

Earlier, road traffic organization chief Davoud Keshavarzian was quoted as saying the crossing at Bazargan in the northwest had been closed to traffic into The Sick Man of Europe Turkey but not from the opposite direction.

He said that came following a new attack Tuesday evening on an Iranian truck in Turkey.

Another official quoted by IRNA said Turkish vehicles were crossing the border headed home, but that Iranian drivers were refusing to enter Turkey.

Keshavarzian did not say who carried out the attack or what the motive was, but there has been growing unrest in Turkey in recent weeks involving Kurdish separatists.

He said the driver of the torched truck was not killed, adding that he had spoken to the Turkish ambassador and asked that "the Turkish government ensure the safety of Iranian drivers in Turkey as Iran does for Turkish drivers."

"Two F-16 jets targeted two Dochka [anti-aircraft gun] positions belonging to the separatist terror organization," said the General Staff in a statement on its official website, referring to the PKK.

The operation followed a string of attacks against Turkish security forces on Aug. 10, which killed five coppers and one soldier.

Truck bomb kills at least 60 in Sadr City
[Reuters] At least 60 people were killed and 200 injured in an explosion on Thursday at a market in Baghdad's Sadr City district.

Police officer Muhsin al-Saedi said, "A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up inside Jamila market at around 6 a.m. Many people were killed and body parts were thrown on top of nearby buildings."

Smoke rose from charred debris. Rescuers pulling bodies from the rubble waded through sheet metal that had formed the roofs and walls of vendors' stands. Angry people gathered at the site of the blast, some crying the names of their missing relatives and others cursing the government.

"We hold the government responsible, fully responsible," witness Ahmed Ali Ahmed said, calling on the authorities to send army and Shi'ite militias to man checkpoints in the capital.

Mamuzini said the grave site was found by a shepherd who was recently nabbed

holy warriors.

The mass grave reportedly included more than 150 bodies of ISIS fighters, mostly foreigners, buried near Mosul-Baghdad highway.

In July, another ISIS mass grave was found in northwestern Mosul province, Mamuzini said.

"The mass grave was discovered by the civilians inside Mosul [city]. The mass grave included 72 bodies of ISIS holy warriors, mostly foreigners," he said.

"Those ISIS fighters have been killed during the US-led coalition Arclight airstrikes following Peshmerga attacks on ISIS military bases and weapons depots," Mamuzini added.

The city of Mosul fell after an ISIS attack across much of western Iraq. The defeat was a humiliation for the Iraqi Army, with many troops known to have abandoned their weapons and uniforms as they fled the ISIS onslaught.

(ISIS) on the western Dijla front, inflicting a heavy blow on the group's ability to engage in heavy festivities, a Kurdish official said Wednesday.

"On Tuesday, at around 5:50, the US-led coalition warplanes and the Peshmerga destroyed ISIS military bases as well as weapons depots containing heavy weapons in the village of Ashqi close to the Kaske two-sided road on the western Dijla front," said Brig. Dilshad Maulood, media officer of the Zeravani Peshmerga command.

He told Rudaw that heavy weapons storage facilities were targeted, undercutting the group's fighting capacity. He claimed that was a "major blow" to the myrmidons.

Meanwhile,

the US military said Tuesday that coalition forces have carried out 20 Arclight airstrikes, bombing 10 ISIS-held cities and towns in Iraq and an equal number in Syria.

A bomb-making facility run by the group was destroyed in Arclight airstrikes on Monday on the Makhmour front and the gunnies were attacked in the nearby village of Kodila Shian, where ISIS casualties were still unknown, according to Peshmerga front man Col. Mala Mahdi.

The destruction of the bomb facility followed an ISIS missile attack on Makhmour last week, in which a 20-year-old woman was reportedly killed and two other women were badly maimed.

Abu Sayyaf hostage beheaded, left on highway
[AFP] A Filipino village chief held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf has been found beheaded on a highway on the remote southern island of Jolo. Rodolfo Boligao's handcuffed remains were found on Tuesday evening, with his severed head placed next to his body, said Chief Inspector Walter Anayo, police chief of Maimbung town. A piece of paper with the victim's name written on it was placed on top of the corpse.

Senior Superintendent Mario Buyuccan said, "It appears he was beheaded right there on the road. The body was intentionally left in the middle of the road so that people could find it."

Abu Sayyaf militants grabbed Boligao along with two members of the coast guard from the port city of Dapitan in May and demanded ransom. The government rejected the ransom demand and the fate of the coast guard members is not known.

group has moved large numbers of imported muscle and weapons into the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor to capture a neighborhood still under regime forces, activists reported Wednesday.

The jihadi group, known as ISIS or IS, has brought in "huge military reinforcement and non-Syrian fighters to the city of Deir Ezzor," the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

"Reliable sources informed SOHR that IS brought military reinforcement to its-held areas in the city of Deir Ezzor" in eastern Syria, it added. "The reinforcement contains ammunition, equipment, cannons as well as non-Syrian bad boys."

The reinforcements were brought in for an attack on the al-Jora neighborhood, which together with the city's al-Qusour district have been under control of regime forces and under siege since the start of this year, the sources said.

Peshmerga: ISIS may have used chemical weapons in Makhmur
[RUDAW.NET] Peshmerga officials say they have asked international experts to examine maimed Peshmerga soldiers who they fear were exposed to chemical weapons by Islamic State

Lion of Islams.

Muhammad Khoshawi, a Peshmerga commander, told Rudaw a group of US and French experts had arrived in the area to take samples and establish facts after a Tuesday night mortar attack on Kurdish positions in Makhmur, some 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Erbil.

"Last night at least 45 mortar rounds were fired at our positions, which we believe were loaded with chemicals, since the wounds are different," Khoshawi, whose forces patrol the area, said.

Burn wounds on the bodies of a number of Peshmerga were examined by the experts and sent to a laboratory for further studies, according to Khoshawi.

He said Peshmerga forces in the area were instructed to use gas masks in case of mortar attacks until results are verified in the laboratory.
