Afghanistan: Gunmen Kill Vehicle Passengers as Int'l Donor Conference Convenes
[ALMANAR.LB] Unknown gunnies Saturday killed 13 passengers travelling in two vehicles in the usually tranquil northern Afghan province of Balkh, as President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
convened an international donor conference in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
No group immediately grabbed credit for the killings of ethnic Hazara minorities, which come as Taliban snuffies ramp up attacks amid a bitter leadership transition.

"The gunnies stopped two vehicles, lined up all the male passengers and shot them dead," said Jafar Haidari, the governor of Zari district, where the incident occurred.

Afghan president urges sustained support at donor summit"They spared the life of one women who was in one of the vehicles. All the victims were ethnic Hazara minorities."

Abdul Razaq Qaderi, the deputy police chief of Balkh, confirmed the fatalities, adding that officials were investigating the incident.

The killings came as Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani implored international donors for their continued support, saying the "maimed country" faced a host of security and economic challenges.

"Rebuilding Afghanistan is going to be a long-term endeavor," Ghani said at a conference of donors in Kabul attended by Western delegates and non-governmental organizations.

"Afghanistan is a maimed country. Widespread unemployment, a violent insurgency, and the advance of extremism across the region are increasing the likelihood that (our) economic reform agenda will be undone by political unrest."

Sudan government arrests four opposition politicians
[Iran Press TV] Four opposition politicians from Sudan's Reform Now Party have been tossed in the clink
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
over criticizing the government of President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
The president of Reform Now Movement, Ghazi Salahuddin Atabani. told a presser in the capital, Khartoum, on Saturday that the four, including the party chief for Khartoum State and his deputy, along with three people listening to their speech were detained by security agents on Thursday.

The party members "were arrested as they gave a speech to people in a public place," Atabani added.

The detentions come amid Bashir's call for opponents to take part in talks to find a solution to the woes of the northeast African country.

Sudan's western region of Darfur has been the scene of violence since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum. There has been also tribal fighting in the region. The United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
estimates that over 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur since the violence began.

Qaradawi referred to Egypt's military prosecution
[Al Ahram] Egypt's prosecutor-general referred on Saturday 35 Moslem Brüderbund supporters to the military prosecution service, including prominent Islamist preacher Youssef El-Qaradawi
...crackpot Egyptian Islamist theologian. He is best known for his program Shariah and Life on Al Jazeera, with an estimated audience of 60 million kindred souls worldwide. He is also well-known for IslamOnline, which occasionally advocates things like slavery and thumping the old lady with a rod no thicker than an inch, and has published more than 120 books, including Islam: The Future Civilization. Joe has long had a prominent role within the intellectual leadership of the Moslem Brüderbund. Some of his views have been controversial in the West, though less so among the rubes of the Mysterious East, and he was refused entry to the United Kingdom in 2008. In 2004, 2,500 Muslim academics from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and from the Palestinian territories condemned Qaradawi, and accused him of giving Islam a bad name....
, on charges of murdering a police officer.

"The investigations revealed that the leaders of the international organization of the Moslem Brüderbund, in coordination with some radical left-wing and religious movements, were involved in the murder of police officer Wael Tahoon, and in attacking public and private facilities," read a statement issued by the prosecution general.

The prosecution added that 24 out of 35 defendants were in jug and had confessed their guilt. El-Qaradawi, a spiritual leader of Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund, is based in Qatar

and was not apprehended.

In December 2014 Interpol issued an arrest warrant for El-Qaradawi, who is the chief of the International Union of Moslem Scholars, on the grounds that he is wanted by Egypt's authorities for inciting murder.

Under a law issued by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in 2014, crimes committed against the state's public and "vital" facilities are referred to the military judiciary.

organizations for expanding the jurisdiction of military tribunals on civilians, was passed shortly after the death of at least 33 security personnel in holy warrior attacks in Sinai on 24 October.

Article 204 of Egypt's new constitution already allows authorities to refer civilians to military trials.

Earlier this week, 439 defendants were referred to the military judiciary over violence which followed the deadly dispersal of two camps supporting Egypt's ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, in August 2013.

UAE Pounds Yemen Rebels after Coalition's Deadliest Day
[AnNahar] The UAE bombarded Yemeni rebels with air strikes on Saturday as it mourned 45 soldiers, among 50 killed in the deadliest day yet for a Saudi-led coalition fighting the bad boys.

Emirati officials vowed that the deaths in a missile attack in the battleground eastern oil province of Marib would not sap their commitment to the coalition's mission to restore exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

The missile hit an arms depot, triggering huge kabooms that the exiled government said also killed five Bahraini coalition troops.

The UAE denounced the attack as "cowardly" but the Shiite Houthis hailed it as "Dire Revenge" for six months of deadly coalition air strikes.

UAE warplanes retaliated with pre-dawn bombing raids against the rebels in Marib and Sanaa as well as their stronghold of Saada in the far north and the central city of Ibb, state media reported.

Coalition aircraft unleashed waves of air strikes on the rebel-held capital from the early hours, sowing panic among residents.

"These are the heaviest air strikes that Sanaa has endured," a local official told AFP.

The streets remained deserted as the bombing continued into the daylight hours.

Coalition warplanes also bombed the rebel position from which the missile is believed to have been fired, a local official and witnesses said.

The Baihan district of Shabwa province, which borders Marib, is one of the rebels' last redoubts in the south.

In the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, an honour guard stood by as pallbearers carried the coffins of the dead soldiers off a military aircraft at Al-Bateen airport.

"A cowardly attack will not deter us, nor will it stop us from realising our goals," vowed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, head of the Emirati armed forces, vowed that "these events will only make us more steadfast in our stand for justice".

The Huthis said they had fired a Tochka missile at the Safer camp in Marib.

They hailed the strike as "Dire Revenge for the crimes and the war of extermination being carried out by the Saudi aggressor and its mercenaries".

The province is the location of Yemen's main oil fields and has seen fierce fighting in recent weeks as loyalist forces and their coalition allies have advanced north.

Loyalist military sources said that the coalition had sent reinforcements to the Safer base this week, including tanks, armoured vehicles, troop carriers, rocket launchers and Apache helicopters.

The extra hardware and troops were intended to boost "the counter-offensive launched by loyalist forces and the coalition to advance on Sanaa", one military official said.

She was the latest in a series of suspected IS sympathizers detained in Spain since last year over security fears.

Police said she was suspected of recruiting other women via the Internet to the group, also known as Daesh, which has claimed numerous kidnappings and executions.

At the time of her arrest early Saturday in the coastal town of Gandia near Valencia, she "was making the last preparations for her journey" to Syria, a police statement said.

She was not the first woman arrested in Spain for allegedly recruiting women and girls for the gang, after another was detained on the island of Lanzarote in July.

More than 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined jihadist fighters in Iraq and Syria, and authorities fear they may return to launch attacks.

Iraq raids Shiite militia HQ over kidnapping of Turkish workers
[Hurriyet Daily News] Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Sept. 4 spoke on the phone with his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi over the abduction of 18 Turkish workers in Baghdad on Sept. 2, as Iraqi security forces raided the Baghdad headquarters of a powerful Iranian-backed Shiite militia.

Sources from the Turkish Prime Ministry quoted Abadi as saying his government was doing everything to save the kidnapped workers, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.

Davutoglu thanked his Iraqi counterpart for Iraqi security forces' efforts to save the workers, the sources said.

The workers "were there not just to earn their livelihood, but also to contribute to the reconstruction of the Iraqi economy and Iraq", Davutoglu reportedly told Abadi.

Separately, a commission of three Turkish MPs established by the parliamentary group of the Republican Peoples' Party (CHP) visited Baghdad on Sept. 4 to monitor the rescue efforts and contribute to the ongoing operation.

"We will do our best for our brothers," politician Ahmet Akin told journalists at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul before leaving. He added they would be meeting with company and Iraqi officials.

A total of 18 Turkish workers were kidnapped in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Sept. 2.

He said that they were employed with a Turkish construction company in Baghdad.

Muslim leader shot dead in south Thailand
[AA.TR] A Moslem leader in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south who had survived a previous attack was rubbed out Saturday in Pattani province, according to local media.

Dormeng Benjaewan, the 76-year-old imam of the Payonok Mosque in Saiburi district, was shot several times by a suspect riding pillion on a cycle of violence in front of a food shop.

He was transferred to a local hospital where he died from wounds sustained to his head and body, the Bangkok Post reported.

Benjaewan had been respected among local residents and had worked with Thai authorities to resolve the decades-long unrest that has been destabilizing the three provinces bordering Malaysia where the population is 80 percent Malay Moslem.

Several imams have already killed in the conflict as a number of Lion of Islam groups oppose the Thai central state, seeking secession or political autonomy.

In a prominent case in August 2013, Imam Yacob Raimanee of Pattani's central mosque -- the main Islamic house of worship in the south -- was bumped off in Pattani city.

The parties behind the killing of Raimanee, who had been considered a key figure in helping resolve tensions between gunnies and authorities, have yet to be identified.

Last November, Abdullateh Todir, a 49-year-old imam in Yala province, was rubbed out by what The Nation newspaper called "a rogue pro-government death squad".

He had been acting as a go-between between the government and gunnies and was "well respected by both warring sides".

Several Buddhist monks, considered as symbols of the Thai state, have also been killed since a rejuvenated armed movement re-emerged in 2004.

Saturday's attack came as the military government is holding peace talks with Mara Pattani, an umbrella movement grouping six different Lion of Islam factions.

Thai police seek 10th suspect in deadly Bangkok bombing
[ARABNEWS] Thai police said Saturday that they are looking for a 10th suspect in last month's bombing of a landmark in central Bangkok that killed 20 people.

Authorities will seek an arrest warrant soon for a man who shared an apartment with a suspect who was tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a week ago when a police raid found bomb-making materials in his room, said national police front man Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri, adding that the man's nationality was unknown.

Another man was arrested near the border with Cambodia. Neither of the arrested men's nationalities has been confirmed.

Arrest warrants have been issued for seven other suspects in the Aug. 17 attack at Bangkok's popular Erawan Shrine, which injured more than 120 people. Thai authorities say that at least two of the suspects are believed to be Turkish.

Prawut said the sketch of the new suspect had been completed but police were waiting on seeking a warrant until a witness could confirm its likeness.

He suggested that the suspect was deeply involved in the gang that is believed to have carried out the bombing at the shrine, and another one the next day near a busy Bangkok river pier that caused no casualties when the bomb went kaboom! in the water.

"There is nothing else to update because it's still on secret operations," Prawut said. "But it's getting close now that we will be able to reveal. We expect some developments next week."

Police seemed to have progressed quickly in their investigation since the first raid on an apartment in Bangkok's outskirts on Aug. 29.

There had been speculation that the foreign suspect arrested at the border near Cambodia was the yellow-shirted man seen in security videos apparently planting the deadly bomb near the shrine. The bomber is believed to have left a pipe bomb in a knapsack at the open-air shrine when it was packed with worshippers during evening rush hour.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
police front man Prawut said Friday that DNA samples taken from the suspect did not match the DNA found on evidence that the bomber is believed to have left behind -- in a taxi, on banknotes and on a cycle of violence taxi he took the night of the attack.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Daesh blows up Palmyra towers
[ARABNEWS] Daesh holy warriors have blown up several of ancient Palmyra's famed tower tombs as they press their demolition of the UNESCO-listed world heritage site, Syria's antiquities chief said Friday.

News of the demolition of the tower tombs which date to the first century AD comes after the terrorists' destruction of the ancient shrine of Baal Shamin and the 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel, regarded as Palmyra's masterpiece.

Antiquities director Maamun Abdulkarim told AFP that among at least seven tombs destroyed were the three best preserved and most treasured funerary towers, including the famed Tower of Elahbel.

"We received reports 10 days ago but we've just confirmed the news," he said. "We obtained satellite images from the US-based Syrian Heritage Initiative, taken on Sept. 2."

All of Palmyra, including the four cemeteries outside the walls of the ancient city, has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1980.

In its listing, the UN agency singles out the tower tombs as the "oldest and most distinctive" of Palmyra's funerary monuments -- "tall multi-story sandstone buildings belonging to the richest families."

Abdulkarim said the Tower of Jambalik, built in 83 AD, was also destroyed, along with the Tower of Ketout built in 44 AD and famed for vivid scenes etched into its walls.

He said the tower tombs were symbols of the economic boom of Palmyra in the first century AD, when it dominated the caravan trade between east and west from its oasis in the desert.

Some of Palmyra's monuments still remain intact, including its grand amphitheater and the Temple of Nabu.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, Daesh addressed a letter to Palmyra's residents promising further destruction.

"It pledged to demolish and destroy more heritage, saying that 'everything that is worshipped without God will be destroyed'," the Observatory said.

Violent protests hit Syria's Sweida city
[ARABNEWS] Druze gunnies in southern Syria killed six government security personnel during violent protests after a Druze leader and dozens of people died in two boom-mobile blasts overnight, a monitor said on Saturday.

The two kabooms late on Friday and ensuing protests killed at least 37 people in and around the town of Sweida, a stronghold of Syria's Druze minority, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Rooters.

Druze leader Sheikh Wahid Al-Balous, who had opposed the Syrian government and holy warriors fighting it, was killed by one of the bombs on the outskirts of Sweida, the Observatory said. The other blast took place in Sweida about the same time. Syrian state media confirmed the two kabooms and a corpse count of more than two dozen people, but did not mention Balous.

There was no claim of responsibility for either blast.

After the attacks, dozens of people protested outside government buildings in the Sweida area, setting cars alight and destroying a statue in the town of former president Hafez Assad, father of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
, the Observatory said.

The security personnel died during the unrest.

The area borders the Damascus countryside and Daraa province, both strategically important to Assad.

In fighting early in the summer, holy warriors in Sweida province tried to capture a main road to Damascus. But such intense violence in Sweida, the province's capital, is rare.

(ISIS) were killed during festivities with Syrian rebels of the Shamiya Front in the northern countryside of Aleppo, military sources reported on Friday.

Fierce festivities took place in the vicinity of Marea town north of Aleppo, where rebel fighters of Shamiya Front reportedly killed seven turbans and took several others as hostages, beside destroying three ISIS vehicles.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, Shamiya commander Salih al-Zein said: "Our fighters repelled a major attack by ISIS turbans on the strategic town of Marea. We've destroyed three ISIS vehicles, killed seven turbans and took 11 others as hostages."

The source added that the Shamiya Front has also seized heavy machine guns from ISIS hard boys, as dozens withdrew from the area after "heavy losses" in Friday's festivities.

"The terrorist group tried to infiltrate into Marea by launching suicide kabooms, but we destroyed the explosive vehicles before entering the town," al-Zein said.

Several Syrian rebel factions backed the Shamiya Front in the anti-ISIS operations on Friday.

The rebels have also attacked ISIS-held villages of Harbal, Sandaf, Kafrah and Harjal in the northern countryside of Aleppo. It was not clear whether the attacks caused any casualties in the ranks of ISIS.

group jihadists and rebels for control of an opposition stronghold in northern Syria has killed at least 47 fighters, a monitor said Saturday.

Twenty Islamist and other rebel fighters were killed in the festivities in Aleppo province throughout Friday, along with 27 IS jihadists, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The fighting centered on the town of Marea, a key rebel bastion that IS has been trying to capture for months.

The Observatory said fighting was ongoing around the town, which rebel forces still control, as well in villages in the surrounding area.

Marea is one of the most significant rebel-held towns in northern Aleppo and lies on a key supply route running to the Turkish border.

IS has targeted the town for months, seeking to expand westwards from territory it already holds in Aleppo province.
