Afghan defense minister says Taliban hid in bombed hospital
[AlAhram] Afghanistan's acting defense minister said Monday that the Doctors Without Borders hospital bombed by US forces in the northern city of Kunduz was being used by snuffies as a "safe place."

The hospital was bombed by a US AC-130 gunship in the early hours of Oct. 3, killing at least 22 people and wounding many more. The main building was destroyed and the hospital has been shut down.

"That was a place they wanted to use as a safe place because everybody knows that our security forces and international security forces were very careful not to do anything with a hospital," Defense Minister Masoom Stanekzai told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named, adding that a Taliban flag had been mounted on one of the hospital's walls.

U.S. F-16 struck by enemy fire in Afghanistan in rare attack
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A U.S. F-16 was struck by enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan in a rare instance of an advanced fighter jet coming under attack by hard boys, military officials have confirmed to AFP.

The $100 million jet sustained significant damage which forced it to jettison its fuel tanks and munitions before returning to base, officials said.

The attack occurred last Tuesday in the Sayid Karam district of eastern Paktia province, much of which is under control of the Taliban. The group had posted a statement on Twitter that evening saying they had downed an enemy jet.

The Taliban has shot down several military helicopters using small-arms fire since their insurgency against U.S.-led NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
forces and government troops began in 2001, but never a fighter capable of super-sonic speeds and reaching a height of 50,000 feet.

The incident underscores the risks foreign forces still face at the hands of the group as Washington extends its military presence in the country beyond 2016.

When contacted for comment, the U.S. military initially said it had no "operational reporting to support the Taliban claims."

But photographs of the site obtained by AFP and seen by J. Chacko, an open-source military analyst based in London, indicated the jet had lost two "drop-tanks" used to extend flight time, an air-to-ground missile, and two other unguided bombs.

When questioned on the claims, the U.S. military confirmed in a statement to AFP: "On October 13, a U.S. F-16 encountered small arms fire in the Paktia Province in Afghanistan. The surface to air fire impacted one of the aircraft's stabilizers and caused damage to one of the munitions.

"The pilot jettisoned two fuel tanks and three munitions before safely returning to base. The pilot received no injuries and safely returned to base."

Residents flee shelling at Ras Yusuf
[Libya Herald] Continued festivities today west of Sabratha between fighters from the town and forces linked to the Libyan National Army (LNA) resulted in residents in Ras Yusuf fleeing their homes because of missiles landing in the area.

Ras Yusuf is located between Sabratha and Ajilat.

Fighting in the area started two days ago when Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
units, mainly from Sabratha but backed by some forces from Ajilat, attempted to move towards Taweela, some 110 kilometres west of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. A major military meeting of LNA-supp0rted forces was taking place there.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
this evening it was reported that the Libya Dawn fighters had stopped their offensive and pulled back to Sabratha. There have also been reports that Sabratha itself was being shelled.

Meanwhile Zintan Military Council has now followed the LNA's Tripoli Operations Room in distancing itself from the Taweela meeting and the fighting. In a statement, it said that it could not accept any link with Qadaffy supporters.

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) claims to have beheaded another Christian in Libya. In a video released from IS in Cyrenaica, it says it executed a Sudanese man, possibly from South Sudan. It said it did so because, it claimed, Christians attacked Muslims.

In the video, IS also showed a Libyan soldier named as Faraj Al-Saiti, being shot. At the same site as the beheading. he was said said to have been a tank driver in Zawia.

The video, thought to have been filmed near Derna, has just been released but it is not known when the alleged executions took place. Nor can the authenticity be assured. The Christian, wearing an orange execution suit, is named as Mohammed Al-Ghaid. Mohammed is not a name used by Christians.

Ankara suicide bomber officially identified as brother of Suruc attacker
[Hurriyet Daily News] One of the two jacket wallahs in the Oct.10 Ankara Massacre was Yunus Emre Alagöz, the brother of Seyh Abdurrahman Alagöz, who was the perpetrator in the Suruc suicide kaboom that killed 33 members of a socialist youth group and maimed more than 100 on July 20, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's office announced on Oct. 19.

"One of the perpetrators of the twin Ankara bombings has been identified as Yunus Emre Alagöz," the prosecutor said in a written statement.

"The other suicide bomber was confirmed by a photo image and a series of tests have been carried out to identify him or her," he added.

The prosecutor's office said Alagöz had come to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
from Syria but gave no time frame for his return, according to semi-official Anadolu Agency.

Hurriyet Daily News reported on Oct. 18 that the Alagöz brothers, along with at least 16 other suspects, were in a group probed for their links to the al-Qaeda and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and they were under wiretap surveillance within the framework of an investigation into al-Qaeda since September 2013.

But the suspects, who are listed in the roster of wanted suspects prepared by the national police force and the National Intelligence Agency (MIT), were cleared in the investigation into the group known as "Dokumacis" in the southeastern province of Adiyaman.

The prosecutor's office also said four people were detained for their activites on Twitter, allegedly writing about the Oct. 10 attack before it happened. Three of them were released and one was banned from traveling abroad, according to the prosecutor.

The statement also said 20 other people were probed for their alleged links to the suicide bombers, 11 were detained, and four of them were later incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
.

Nine suspects disappeared "because of the the irresponsible publications that identified the suspects by their initials," according to the prosecutor office.

The statement came hours after an Ankara court removed a broad media ban over the investigation into the Ankara suicide attack imposed on Oct. 14.

In the raids on the homes and workplaces of the suspects, the police seized 10 boom jackets, 60 kilograms of TNT and more than 1,500 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, often used in improvised bombs, the prosecutor's office said.

Two suicide bombers targeting a peace rally in the capital Ankara on Oct. 10 killed at least 102 people, wounding hundreds of others.
An Nahar adds more quantities:
"A Ford Focus car used in the Ankara attack has been found, as well as 11 boom jackets, six Kalashnikovs, 22 hand grenades, 1,683 bullets and hundreds of kilograms (pounds) of explosives," prosecutors said in a statement.

It is also a rare explanation of Pakistain's decision to make tactical nuclear weapons to deal with the possible threat of Indian aggression.

Shiite militia official says ISIS pleading for weapons and suicide bombers
[RUDAW.NET] Iraqi forces and its allied Shiite militia have driven Islamic State (ISIS) militants from the hills of Makhol and the Siniya district of Salahadin province and are now eyeing an advance into the townships of Rashad and Riyaz in Kirkuk province, an official said Sunday.

“Iraqi security forces in coordination with Hashd al-Shaabi and Iraqi fighter jets advanced into ISIS-held territories and their next target appears to be the townships of Riyaz and Rashad that have long been held by ISIS,” said Karim Nuri, a spokesperson of the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi.

“We should seize the opportunity of an unexpected major collapse of ISIS’ military capabilities,” Nuri said. “I believe there is just one ISIS Chechen regiment remaining in Baiji town."

Nuri believes ISIS cannot fight off recent Hashd al-Shaabi campaigns.
“We have obtained ISIS communications saying they suffered shortages of ammunition and suicide bombers," he said. "They were calling for volunteer (bombers) and ammunition supplies."

Nuri said there had been no coordination or cooperation in the raids with the US-led coalition forces, adding that Iraqi forces alone can fight ISIS because the group is now weak. “Iraqi jets and the army are enough to defeat ISIS,” he claimed.

Hoping not to jinx things, it appears the hoped for "Third Intifada" is running out of steam.
Dozens of Palestinian and Israeli Arab suspects arrested

[IsraelTimes] On Monday police tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
eight residents of the Israeli Arab city of Umm al-Fahm on suspicion that they had thrown rocks and Molotov cocktails at security forces during festivities sparked by rumors of a change in Israeli policy on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. Israeli has repeatedly denied the rumors. According to Israel Radio, four of those arrested were minors.

In Shfaram, another Arab Israeli city, 20 West Bank Paleostinians were arrested for entering Israel without a permit.

The radio station reported that since the beginning of October, Israeli security forces have arrested 180 Paleostinians for entering Israel illegally. Among those arrested were individuals who allegedly provided transport, accommodation or employment to the Paleostinians.

The Paleostinian Prisoners Club said that some 780 Paleostinians have been arrested or detained by Israeli security forces since the beginning of October.

Overnight Sunday, security forces also arrested Itiel Zuaretz, a right-wing Jewish activist, on suspicion that he had carried out hate crimes against Paleostinians. Zuaretz was arrested at his home in the illegal settlement outpost of Adei Ad in the northern West Bank by masked coppers, who presented the 27-year-old father of four with a 30-day administrative detention order signed by Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon.

In an interview with Channel 2, an associate of Zuaretz called the arrest "disgraceful," and said that a government that works against Jewish settlements in the West Bank "has no right to exist."

A security source said Zuaretz was wanted for involvement in "violent, illegal activities that are a threat to state security," the TV station reported.

Efforts to stem the recent surge of terror attacks against Israelis have included the deployment of hundreds of IDF troops in Jerusalem, as well as a partial lockdown on several Arab neighborhoods in the city and the demolition of terrorists' homes within days of attacks.

On Sunday, the cabinet approved a bill expanding the rules under which police can stop and search potential suspects. Ministers voted unanimously in favor of amending the current law to allow officers to carry out body searches even without reasonable suspicion that the subject is carrying a weapon.

Two Protests get two Palestinians shot

[IsraelTimes] Some two-dozen Palestinians have been killed in protests with Israel Defense Forces troops since the start of the month, and another 20 were killed as they carried out terror attacks against Israeli civilians. Nine Israeli civilians have been killed since last September in stabbing and ramming attacks by Palestinian terrorists.

Protests continued Monday at the Beit El checkpoint in the West Bank, and near the West Bank town of Tuqua, with two protesters shot at the latter location.

IDF forces are reportedly using tear gas to disperse the demonstration at the Beit El junction.

According to the Ma’an news agency, the Tuqua riots broke out after IDF soldiers attempted to raid a number of homes in the town, south of Jerusalem. The two were shot in the legs with live fire, according to the report. The extent of the injuries was not immediately clear.

Police continue to set up checkpoints in volatile Arab Jerusalem neighborhoods

[Jpost] One day after police erected a temporary wall to stymie ongoing terrorist attacks from east Jerusalem's Jebl Mukaber, several more checkpoints were added on Monday in flashpoint Arab neighborhoods in the capital.

Police front man Micky Rosenfeld said that apart from unrest in Silwan early Monday morning after a Paleostinian family was forcefully removed from their home by Border Police, relative calm returned to the beleaguered capital. He could not confirm reports of a curfew being imposed in Silwan.

"There were no major incidents that took place today," Rosenfeld said Monday night. "Police continue to intensely patrol Arab neighborhoods and have set up checkpoints at the entrances of Ras el-Amud and Abu Tor.”

In the meantime, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat announced on Monday that a state-of-the-art $375,000 mobile command center, donated by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein via the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, is now operational in the city. According to Barkat, the mobile unit will assist police in emergency situations, and be utilized as a security hub for the many sports and cultural events that regularly take place in the city. Barkat said the mobile unit features hi-tech specifications gleaned from Israel Police, Fire and Rescue Services and Magen David Adom's emergency medical service teams' mobile units.

"I would like to thank Rabbi Eckstein and the IFCJ's hundreds of thousands of donors throughout the world, who steadfastly stand with Jerusalem in times of need, helping us protect Israel's national and municipal home fronts," the mayor said. "During the current wave of violence that we are experiencing, the help is in the form of a mobile command center that will enable the city to provide real-time responses during emergencies and crisis situations when the speed and efficiency of the response is critical."

Palestinians throw stones in Gush Etzion, Soldiers shoot one of them

[Ynet] 20 Paleostinians in the village of Tekoa threw stones at IDF forces, who responded with riot dispersal means and Ruger rifle fire. One of the protesters was hit in the lower body and evacuated by the Red Islamic Thingy.

Eritrean mistakenly shot during Israel bus station attack dies
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
n man mistakenly shot and beaten by a mob during an attack in the city of Beersheba has died, police said on Monday.

The attack on Sunday night at a bus station in the southern city saw a gunman also armed with a knife kill a 19-year-old soldier and wound around 10 other people.

The gunman was killed, while a security guard shot the Eritrean man mistakenly thinking he was a second attacker. A mob also attacked and beat him, Israeli media reported.

Police identified the attacker as a Mohannad Al-Aqaby, 21, an Arab Israeli citizen from the area.

"During a raid last night, security forces and Shin Bet (internal security agency) tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
one of his family members, who was accused of providing support" for the attack, police said.

Video that spread online appears to show the Eritrean lying on the ground after being shot and being kicked in the head and body by angry bystanders.

More than two weeks of violence and unrest has raised questions of a full-scale Paleostinian Intifada, or uprising, while some Israeli politicians have urged residents to arm themselves in the face of attacks.

Police have not said whether anyone was arrested over the shooting and beating of the Eritrean.

Israeli media described him as an asylum seeker, like many Eritreans who have come to Israel, though authorities have not confirmed those details.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the raid and the military has not released a statement about the daring assault.

Iran mobilizes IRG, Hezb, Iraqi Shia militiia for battle in Syria
[WashingtonPost] BEIRUT ‐ In a striking sign of Iran's growing regional influence, a major assault on Syria's most populous city is being coordinated by an Iranian military commander using Shiite forces from three countries to back President Bashar al-Assad's beleaguered troops, militia officials said.

Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's elite Quds Force, has ordered thousands of Iraqi Shiite militia allies into Syria for the operation to recapture Aleppo, according to officials from three of the militias. The militiamen are to join Iranian troops and forces from Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militia, the officials said.
With regard to the Iraqi militias, think of it as training to make them more useful when they return home...

But officials from one of the groups said that while new quantities had arrived, the supplies were not enough for the scale of the assault. They declined to be identified due to the sensitivities of the matter. "A few will not do the trick. They need dozens," said one of the officials.

US, allies conduct 18 air strikes in Syria and Iraq: Military
[AlAhram] A US-led coalition conducted 17 air strikes against ISIS in Iraq on Sunday and also targeted the myrmidon group in Syria with a single strike near Manbij, according to a statement released on Monday.
The Iraq strikes were concentrated near Ramadi, Sinjar and Tal Afar, where they primarily destroyed fighting positions, vehicles and weaponry, according to the Combined Joint Task Force statement.

Four bombardments near the key city of Ramadi also "denied ISIL access to terrain," the statement said, using a military acronym for ISIS. Four strikes near Sinjar helped destroy two ISIS command and control posts, while four near Tal Afar maimed an ISIS fighter.
