[INDEPENDENT.CO.UK] A 70-year-old Christian woman has been stripped naked, beaten and paraded through the streets by a mob of around 300 Muslim men in a village in southern Egypt.
The mob also burned down seven homes belonging to Christian families, according to an unusually outspoken statement issued by the local Orthodox Coptic church, after rumours circulated in the village that a Christian man was having a relationship with a Muslim woman.
The violence started at around 8pm on 20 May, and the local diocese said it was two hours before police responded, by which point the mob had already dispersed.
The woman who was stripped naked was reported to be the mother of the man involved in the rumoured affair. She has since met with church leaders, the Diocese of Minya and Abu Qirqas said.
The violence is representative of the tensions between the two religions in the province south of Cairo, where extra-marital affairs between Muslims and Christians are strictly taboo.
[IsraelTimes] Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has called for the culprits behind a Muslim mob that attacked an elderly Christian woman and ransacked homes to be held accountable and gave the military a month to restore property damaged during the violence, at no cost to the owners.
Police have tossed in the slammer Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! six men suspected of taking part in the violence and are looking for 12 more, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
In a statement issued by his office, Sissi says Egypt appreciates the role of "glorious Egyptian women" and that "the rights and the protection of their dignity are a humanitarian and patriotic commitment as well as a legal and constitutional one."
Anba Makarios, Minya’s top Christian holy man, told a talk show host on the private Dream TV network that the 70-year-old woman was dragged out of her home by the mob who beat her and insulted her before they stripped her off her clothes and forced her to walk through the streets as they chanted Allahu Akbar, or "God is great."
Of course they did, because belonging to the Master Religion means they can.
The woman reported the incident to the police five days later, said Makarios, adding that she had initially found it too difficult to "swallow the humiliation" she suffered and go to the police.
Oddly enough, the police completely missed the torchlight parade and burning buildings, or assuredly they would have done something about it. Update from another Times of Israel article at 1:00 a.m. ET:
Police arrived at the scene nearly two hours after the attacks began and tossed in the slammer Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up! six people, according to the statement by Minya’s top holy man, Anba Makarios. He said the family of the Christian man had notified the police of threats against them by Muslim villagers the day before the attack.
"No one did anything and the police took no preemptive or security measures in anticipation of the attacks," he told a television interviewer Wednesday night.
Update from Al Ahram at 12:40 pm ET: Five more arrested. So only about 289 Master Religionists remain free.

Security researchers have tied the recent spate of digital breaches on Asian banks to North Korea, in what they say appears to be the first known case of a nation using digital attacks for financial gain.
On Thursday, the Symantec researchers said they had uncovered evidence linking an attack at a bank in the Philippines last October with attacks on Tien Phong Bank in Vietnam in December and one in February on the central bank of Bangladesh that resulted in the theft of more than $81 million.
"If you believe North Korea was behind those attacks, then the bank attacks were also the work of North Korea," said Eric Chien, a security researcher at Symantec, who found that identical code was used across all three attacks.
"We've never seen an attack where a nation-state has gone in and stolen money," Mr. Chien added. "This is a first."
In the attack at Bangladesh's central bank in February, the thieves tried to transfer $1 billion in funds from an account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Fed officials became suspicious of the some of requested transfers and released only $81 million to accounts in the Philippines.
"If you presume it's North Korea, $1 billion is almost 10 percent of their G.D.P.," Mr. Chien said. "This is not small change for them."

In this part of the world, such charges are not difficult to get. The beauty of the 1st Amendment is that one can utter just about anything they want without a blasphemy charge.
