Farmington Hills fake university set up by ICE to nab foreign students
[Detroit Free Press] The Department of Homeland Security set up a fake university in Farmington Hills to target foreign students who wanted to stay in the U.S. without proper authorization, according to federal indictments unsealed in Detroit on Wednesday.

Eight people were arrested and indicted in an immigration fraud case for conspiracy to commit visa fraud and harboring aliens for profit, said the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Matthew Schneider.

Six of them were arrested in metro Detroit, one in Florida and another in Virginia. The students enrolled at the fake university with the intent to obtain jobs under a student visa program called CPT (Curricular Practical Training) that allows students to work in the U.S., said prosecutors.

An indictment says the defendants helped at least 600 "foreign citizens to illegally remain, re-enter and work in the United States and actively recruited them to enroll in a fraudulent school as part of a 'pay to stay' scheme."

The indictments were filed Jan. 15 and unsealed Wednesday. They allege that from February 2017 through January 2019, the defendants "conspired with each other and others to fraudulently facilitate hundreds of foreign nationals in illegally remaining and working in the United States by actively recruiting them to enroll into a metro Detroit private university that, unbeknownst to the conspirators, was operated by HSI (Homeland Security Investigation) special agents as part of an undercover operation."

HSI is an investigative arm of U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), part of the Department of Homeland Security.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
On heifers, calving, and one cold night in the barn
[The Prairie Farmer] The time: 10 p.m. The temperature: 6 degrees F (and dropping). The heifer: ready to calve.

None of this is a surprise to anyone who’s ever worked with livestock ‐ including the 14-year-old cattleman at our house, who was at the helm of it all.

Last fall, my son, Nathan, decided to buy a few bred heifers. He wanted to expand his herd faster than his annual show heifer project was allowing, and he wanted to raise more calves to sell, to earn more college money. All of this sounded like a good idea to us. More cattle equal more responsibility.

He and his dad watched the sale offerings last fall and decided to hit up one from the Welsh family, local Simmental breeders. They studied the catalog, Nathan made his list, he did the bidding, he wrote the check, and he came home with four bred heifers ‐ two guaranteed to have heifers.

After a week of calf watch and three days past the "due" date, the first heifer calved. She did it around 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Very considerate of her. It wasn’t even all that cold. She took right to the calf, cleaned him off and has been a great momma.

The second was the proverbial watched pot. We encouraged her to go ahead and have that calf when temperatures climbed up around 25 degrees. But no. She waited. And waited. And waited until it dropped to 6 degrees one night, with a forecast of minus 6 by sunrise.

Nathan went to the barn to check her around 10 p.m., and sure enough, water bag out. We all went out and pulled a nice-sized bull calf. The cow took right to him, cleaning him off. She didn’t have much of an udder yet, so my husband gave the calf a bottle. They put him in the warming hutch, and before long, he was up and running around. By midnight, he was nursing his own momma ‐ and Nathan checked them all night long from the cow cam in the house.

#2  "and Nathan checked them all night long from the cow cam in the house"

My boyhood rural friends used to spend the night in the freezing barn (spent one or two with them myself). It was warmer right next to the mother cow though, until she decided that you weren't necessarily welcome in her stall.

Technology IS good sometimes.

Ivory Coast’s Gbagbo freed by war crimes court
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] The International Criminal Court finally freed former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo
... Former President-for-Life of Ivory Coast from 2000 to 2011. Laurent lost to Alassane Ouattara in 2010 but his representtive tore up the results on the teevee and he refused to vacate the presidential palace. French troops assisted the Oattara forces in extricating him from his Fuhrerbunker...
on Friday after his shock acquittal last month on charges of crimes against humanity.

Supporters sang and waved flags in the Hague after judges agreed to release the 73-year-old on condition that he stays in an as-yet-unnamed country pending an appeal by the prosecution.

Gbagbo, the first former head of state ever to stand trial at the ICC, and his aide Charles Ble Goude were cleared on January 15 over a wave of violence after disputed elections in the west African nation in 2010.

More than 3,000 people died on both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat to his internationally backed-rival ‐ and now-president ‐ Alassane Ouattara
...the former president-for-life of Ivory Coast. He actually beat his predecessor in an election before having to eject him from the presidential palazzo....
ICC appeals judge Chile Eboe-Osuji said the court would release Gbagbo "to a state willing to accept them on its territory and willing to enforce the conditions set" by the court.

Ivory Coast is an ICC member state, but the court may be unwilling to send Gbagbo to his homeland, given that it has refused to surrender Gbagbo’s wife Simone despite an outstanding ICC warrant for her arrest.

Lawyers have previously cited the arrangement reached with former DR Congo warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba, who went to Belgium after he was cleared by the ICC last year.

Mnangagwa accuses West of ‘backing violence’ in Zimbabwe
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] Zim-bob-we’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday accused western countries of supporting violent countrywide protests last month that were sparked by a huge rise in fuel prices.

At least 12 civilians died and hundreds more were maimed following a joint police and military crackdown on protesters after shops were looted and set on fire.

"We regret the loss of life but we needed to protect property as well as other citizens not involved in the protests," Mnangagwa told local news hounds.

"We have told the western countries that they cannot turn around and raise concerns when they are the ones sponsoring the violence," the privately-owned NewsDay newspaper quoted Mnangagwa as saying.

Authorities have blamed the protests on the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party and on non-governmental organizations that they said were backed by western governments.

'Golden handshake' for DR Congo's outgoing ministers
[PULSE.NG] Ministers in the outgoing government of now ex-president Joseph Kabila awarded themselves "golden-handshake" benefits in two decrees which were passed on November 24, that safeguarded lifetime cash payments.

It was a highly controversial move in a country where millions of people live on less than $2 a day, but it also came with a proviso: that former ministers are "banned from divulging or revealing secrets of state".

Outgoing Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala will receive a monthly housing allowance of $5,000 (4,400 euros) plus a separate monthly stipend -- amounting to 30 percent of his current salary -- for life.

Such "advantages" for former prime ministers will be paid for by "the public treasury", it said.

Tshibala will also have full-time bodyguards "for life", one plane ticket per year "in business class on international routes" and a new vehicle every five years.

It does not specify a limit on the cost of the vehicle.

Former members of the government will also be granted benefits "at the expense of the public treasury".

Like the outgoing prime minister, they will receive a monthly allowance worth 30 percent of their current salaries and an international business class flight. They will also be granted a $1,000 housing allowance each month.

In total, the decrees will benefit 71 ex-ministers, 11 former deputy ministers and two government secretaries, along with "personalities who carry out duties equivalent in rank to members of the government in the cabinet of the president of the republic and the cabinet of the prime minister".

The payouts are in addition to a one-off "leaving office" payment that all former government ministers receive, equating to six months of salary and benefits.

EFCC parades 13 suspected Yahoo Boys in Enugu
[PULSE.NG] The South East Zonal Head of the commission, Mr Usma Iman said that the suspects were jugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
following intelligence between Jan. 17 and Jan. 31, 2019 in Awka, Anambra and Enugu States.
Golly. I hope they didn't nab Sani Abacha's son. He and I are gonna share sixty million US dollars (60,000,000US$)...
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday in Enugu paraded 13 suspected internet fraudsters popularly called ’yahoo yahoo boys’.

The South East Zonal Head of the commission, Mr Usma Iman said that the suspects were arrested following intelligence between Jan. 17 and Jan. 31, 2019 in Awka, Anambra and Enugu States.

Imam said that the arrests were as a result of the commission’s avowed and renewed commitment to stamp out cyber crime in the country.

He said that officers of the commission on Jan. 17 raided the homes of suspected cyber criminals in Awka and arrested three suspects.

The zonal head said that similar exercise was carried out in Enugu on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 during which six and four suspects were arrested respectively.

"We are convinced after our investigations that the suspects have cases to answer. They shall be charged to court next week," he said.

Imam said that the image of the country had been battered due to activities of cyber criminals.

"Nigerians are now treated as criminals by other countries due to activities of few individuals in our midst and the EFCC is determined to stamp it out," he said.

He said that incriminating items were recovered from the suspects.

"At the beginning of investigations the suspects denied committing the crime but when we started analysing their mobile phones and laptops we established the offenses.

#1  I wondered about that odd term, yahoo boys, so I looked it up, and got this:

Many undergraduates in Nigerian universities dabble in internet fraud. Nicknamed “yahoo-yahoo” after the international web portal and search engine, this perfidy has become a way of life for the young con-artists. Many of these fraudsters – dubbed “yahoo-boys” – have become filthy rich.

Hitherto, internet fraud was carried out at public cafés. However, with regular raids on these internet cafés and the arrest of suspected fraudsters by the police, the “yahoo boys” have simply moved their bases.

Plus, the proliferation of internet service providers in Nigeria has made it even easier for scamsters to commit internet fraud. It is now as simple as buying modems and surfing the internet within the confines of their privately rented apartments on campus. The “yahoo boys” stay in physical communes of like-minded individuals and use this network to launch internet attacks.

It is no surprise that there is a proliferation of “yahoo boys”. The celebration of wealth, particularly among politicians, serves to motivate the involvement of the youths in cyber-crime. Nigerian society celebrates wealth without questioning the source of the money.

So what do these young, undergraduate Nigerians do under these circumstances? They see a leadership that doesn’t care about their future. And they use their education to follow the example set by their elders that shows crime pays.

El Salvador: burdened by gangs, war and poverty
[PULSE.NG] Gang-plagued El Salvador and neighboring Honduras and Guatemala form the "Northern Triangle", the world's most violent region outside of a conflict zone.

Its murder rate has halved since 2015, but remains among the world's highest. In 2018 it stood at 51 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to government figures.

Most murders are committed by gangs such as the ultra-violent Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18, involved in drug trafficking, extortion and turf wars.

The country has around 70,000 gang members, 17,000 in prison.

Violence and poverty have generated a wave of illegal immigration towards the United States.

US-DEPENDENT ECONOMY
El Salvador sent more than 44 percent of its exports to the United States in 2017, according to the World Bank.

It produces textiles, coffee, plastics and medicine, among other items.

Remittances from the three million Salvadorians living abroad -- 2.5 million in the United States -- account for roughly 16 percent of GDP, according to the country's central bank.

The World Bank says around 29 percent of the population of 6.37 million (2017) lives under the poverty line, down from nearly 32 percent in 2014.

Over 2010-2016 real GDP growth averaged 2.6 percent, one of the weakest rates in Central America, the Bank says, forecasting 2.8 percent for 2018.

NATURE'S CURSE
The smallest country in Central America, El Salvador is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" that makes it vulnerable to earthquakes and cyclones.

A quake in 1986 killed 1,500 people and two in 2001 each claimed several hundred more lives.

The site of Joya de Ceren, buried under a volcanic eruption in AD 600 as Pompeii was, is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

#1  Pelosi then took a soundbite that has been perpetuated throughout the media out of context from the president’s comments on MS-13 gang members and attributed it to all immigrants. “So when the president of the United States says about undocumented immigrants, ‘These aren’t people, these are animals,’ you have to wonder, does he not believe in the spark of divinity, the dignity and worth of every person?’

Deep freeze prompts Trump administration to re-up bid to bolster coal plants
[Washington Examiner] The Trump administration is relitigating its arguments supporting coal after the fading fuel source was used more frequently this week to help meet surging power demand during the deep freeze that overtook the Midwest and East Coast.

Steven Winberg, the Energy Department’s assistant secretary for fossil energy, touted early data Friday showing coal and nuclear generated a higher percentage of power during the cold surge than usual. Temperatures were expected to return to normal this weekend.

"People will pore over the data, and one thing you will see is coal will have stepped up its capacity factors, and nuclear will have stepped up its capacity factors," Winberg told the Washington Examiner in an interview. "Those are power sources that have fuel on the ground, and that's absolutely important. If we didn't have that, it would have been a much worse situation."

The Trump administration has repeatedly cited the stress of extreme cold weather events as a possible reason to subsidize coal and nuclear plants, which can store fuel on-site. Natural gas, normally the cheapest and most-used fuel for electricity, depends on pipeline flows that can be interrupted during extreme weather, while wind and solar power, whose prices have dramatically fallen, fluctuate depending on when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing.

President Trump has repeatedly pressed for action to save coal and nuclear plants, even after an independent panel of federal energy regulators rejected a Energy Department plan to provide them special payments because of a lack of evidence showing the grid is at risk.

The White House has stalled over an effort to use emergency executive authority to help coal and nuclear plants.

Black Monday: GM to Layoff 4K American White-Collar Workers
[Breitbart] Executives at General Motors (GM) announced Friday that about 4,250 white-collar workers would be laid off, the vast majority of whom are in the United States, as the multinational corporation continues shifting production overseas and to Mexico.

GM executives are set to start the layoffs on Monday of next week, with an investment strategist declaring the day "Black Monday" as thousands of workers in the U.S. and Canada will be terminated from their positions.

"Black Monday at General Motors," David Kudla wrote online. "To those who are about to separate, we salute you."

The Monday layoffs of thousands of GM’s white-collar American workers in Michigan and Ohio is just the latest component of the corporation’s laying off of 14,700 workers in North America ‐ including at least 3,300 American factory workers

In 2019, GM expects to stop production at four American plants, including Detroit-Hamtramck and Warren Transmission in Michigan, Lordstown Assembly in Ohio, and Baltimore Operations in Maryland. This comes after GM laid off about 1,500 American workers in Lordstown in 2018, while their Mexico production remained unaffected.

Though GM promised to hire recently laid off American workers for jobs at its Fort Wayne, Indiana manufacturing plant, the company has continued employing temporary workers. The United Auto Workers (UAW) is now suing.

Despite the layoffs, GM’s CEO Mary Barra has continued raking in about $22 million a year.

#1  Can't close entire factories and keep all the white collar jobs that were tied at least proportionally to them.

Everything I read is that GM is maybe the worst of the Big 3 in terms of inventory of unsold cars, so there's probably more downsizing ahead for them.

Housemaid murder: Three women sent on judicial remand after police complete probe
[DAWN] The police investigation has held three women of Iqbal Town guilty of murder of their young housemaid after they confessed to committing the crime.

They have been sent to jail on judicial remand as a case had already been lodged against them with the Iqbal Town Police Station.

The details of the ’horrific murder’ of Uzma (16) as shared by Iqbal Town Division SP Ali Raza unveiled the scale of brutality and torture the domestic worker had faced at the hands of her employers. She had taken just a bite of food from the plate of the younger daughter of Mahrukh, the lady of the house. The three women, namely Mahrukh, her daughter Aima and her sister-in-law Rehana, were allegedly involved in the murder.

The ’silly version’ of Mahrukh’s story helped the police reach the reality.

In her application, she had blamed Uzma of stealing money and running away from her home. "Mahrukh had told the police that her husband had died three years back," SP Raza said while talking to Dawn. Her dubious statement was exposed when the police went to her home for investigation and found out that she was mother of one-year-old baby.

This made the police suspicious and they started having doubts about her whole statement regarding the theft.

Later on, further probe revealed that Mahrukh had attacked Uzma with a large ladle as punishment for taking a bite from the food. Uzma fainted due to critical injuries to her head.

"Instead of shifting Uzma to hospital, the family kept her in a room of the house though she was bleeding internally," the SP said and added that the incident had occurred on Jan 13 while the family kept Uzma in ’illegal custody’ in deteriorating health condition for days. She succumbed to her injuries on Jan 16.

Mahrukh had visited the Iqbal Town police, submitting an application wherein she had accused Uzma of theft.

"At the time of visit of the police officials, the family was planning to dump her body which they had concealed in the car parked in the garage of their house," Mr Raza said.

"At the night of the same day, they threw her body into the drain near Moon Market of Allama Iqbal Town," he added.

The next day, some locals spotted the body and alerted the police. The police contacted Uzma’s father, Muhammad Riaz, who recognised his daughter.

Uzma’s body was later sent for post-mortem which confirmed her death was caused by head injuries.

"We immediately took Mahrukh into custody, interrogated her and she confessed to injuring Uzma with a ladle over a minor issue," SP Raza said.

Mahrukh further told the police that her daughter and sister-in-law were also her crime partners. The police had started the paperwork but haven't done much else on complaint of Riaz.

KP education department bars male employees from contacting female teachers
[DAWN] The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education (E&SE) Department has banned its employees from contacting female teachers in the province via phone or social media, a notification issued on Friday said.

The adviser to the KP chief minister for elementary and secondary education, Ziaullah Bangash, said the step was taken to curb incidents of harassment.

According to the notification, it was decided at a "high-level meeting" of the education department that all staff members ‐ from the junior clerk to the superintendent ‐ working in the offices of female District Education Officers (DEO) "will not contact any female teacher in connection with any official matter/issue" through telephone or WhatsApp.

In addition, "no such thing will be shared on social media/Facebook in this regard" by the male staff members of ministerial cadre. In KP, female DEOs are responsible for girls' schools and male DEOs for boys' schools.

Typhus Epidemic Worsens in Los Angeles
h/t Instapundit
A veteran Los Angeles City Hall official is one of the latest victims of an epidemic of the infectious disease typhus that continues to worsen across LA County.

For months, LA County public health officials have said typhus is mainly hitting the homeless population.

But Deputy City Attorney Liz Greenwood, a veteran prosecutor, tells NBC4 she was diagnosed with typhus in November, after experiencing high fevers and excruciating headaches.

"It felt like somebody was driving railroad stakes through my eyes and out the back of my neck," Greenwood told the I-Team. "Who gets typhus? It's a medieval disease that's caused by trash."

Rapper Lil Yachty Tries Out Those Louis Vuitton Earbuds (opens to informative video)
[VOGUE] When Louis Vuitton announced its own version of wireless earbuds (they’re essentially a luxury version of those Apple AirPods), Lil Uzi Vert, ever the trendsetter, was the first to try them out. He wore the French fashion house from head to toe, and if you weren’t looking closely, you could have easily missed the iconic monogram sitting prettily in his ears.

Now, Lil Yachty is the latest rapper to hop on the designer earbud trend. Earlier today, Yachty posted a video to his Instagram that shows off the new wearable tech (which retail for a whopping $995, by the way)‐but somehow that’s the least extravagant part of the clip. He also boasts about his private jet, which he claims he doesn’t even need, moisturizes with coconut oil, and even points out the man that he’s hired to carry his colorful Louis Vuitton luggage. He summed it all up concisely, proclaiming, "Black boy joy," as he continued to rub the coconut oil into his hands. It’s unquestionably an excessive flex, but Yachty’s definitely earned it.

US Army soldiers will soon be armed with these game-changing drones that fit in the palm of your hand
[Bus Insider] Pocket-sized drones are on their way to US Army soldiers, offering a better view of the battlefield and giving them a lethal edge over enemies.

The Army has awarded FLIR Systems a $39.6 million contract to provide Black Hornet Personal Reconnaissance Drones, next-level technology which could be a total game changer for US troops in the field, the company revealed in a recent press release.

Measuring just 6.6 inches in length and weighing only 1.16 ounces, these "nano unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems" are "small enough for a dismounted soldier to carry on a utility belt," according to FLIR Systems.

These drones can provide situational awareness and beyond visual line-of-sight capability day or night at a distance of up to 1.24 miles, covering ground at a max speed of 20 feet per second.

The "nearly silent" combat systems can provide constant covert coverage of the battlefield for almost half an hour, transmitting both live video and high-definition photographs back to the operator.

#3  Another, Gee!Whiz! Wonder-gadget article. Shortly afterwards people will start deploying disposable jammers that will fry the radio spectrum... Life will follow the Science Fiction written in the 60's -- such as Gordon R. Dickson 's Soldier, Ask Not(1967) where the soldiers had fewer electronic toys than the average civilian...

#4  Don't you mean Clarke's "Superiority", magpie?
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 02/02/2019 12:14 Comments || Top||

#5  No... In Soldier, Ask Not(1967) the troopers were all armed with "spring rifles" (Hi-tech crossbows ?) that were inferior to weapons a common street thug could carry. But they couldn't be disabled by standard jamming fielded by all major militaries of the time.
Posted by: magpie || 02/02/2019 13:17 Comments || Top||

#6  For urban warfare with civilians present these *do* seem like something that would make the poor trooper that wants to look around a corner's life just a bit easier. For "Near Peer Warfare" I start getting an image of a what happens when people start fielding small mortars with passive HF/DF and *Bloop!* drop a grenade on anyone trying to control one of these.

#7  I get your point, though I don't see how you can jam M-16. GPS, and remote operated drones, yes. Chemical Reactions - well, if you can affect chemical reactions at a distance, you don't need rifles.

#8  "Game changer?" If you are close enuf to the enemy to need these things (or a bayonet), you've got other more pressing issues.

McClatchy Follows BuzzFeed, Vice, and Others in Cutting Staff
[Miami New Times] This morning, Craig Forman, CEO of McClatchy Company, emailed all staff to say about 10 percent of the newspaper chain's employees would be offered voluntary buyouts. All of the details were not immediately available, though a meeting was called for 2 p.m. today at the Miami Herald ‐ the chain's most significant newspaper ‐ to offer details. "This will be a one-time opportunity," the email reads. "We do not anticipate another."

Forman stresses the buyout is optional. "It is important to us that [employees] are empowered to make the next steps on their career path," he writes, and also references, "driving our company to a functionally based organizational structure in targeted strategic areas." It's unclear what that statement means.

U.S. high court temporarily blocks Louisiana abortion restrictions
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday temporarily prevented a Louisiana law imposing strict regulations on abortion clinics from taking effect in a case that presents a key test on the contentious issue following last year’s retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, a pivotal supporter of abortion rights.

A one-page order issued by Justice Samuel Alito said that "the justices need time to review" the various court filings before making a decision on the emergency application filed by Shreveport-based abortion provider Hope Medical Group for Women to block the law.

Alito said that the restrictions, which were to go into effect on Monday, will be put on hold until at least Feb. 7.
