Chicago police officer and security worker shot on the Southwest Side
[Chicago Tribune] A shoplifting suspect who got into a shootout with reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
police is dead, and a police officer and a security worker were hospitalized in a confrontation Thursday afternoon at a store on the city’s Southwest Side, authorities said.
The officer is the fourth Chicago cop to be shot in less than two weeks.

"I get questioned all of the time, ’what is the department doing about the violence, the shootings and the homicides?’ What we’re doing is risking our lives every day to protect this city," Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said at a news conference outside Mount Sinai Hospital, where police said the officer was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and underwent surgery before being released later Thursday.

A second victim, a security worker from a Home Depot store where the confrontation broke out about 5 p.m., in the 2400 block of West 46th Place, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in grave condition, authorities said.

The officer maimed in the shooting has four years with the department and is assigned to the 9th District, authorities said. Shortly before 8 p.m., the officer had been released from the hospital. As he stepped into a vehicle, a jacket draped over him, at least three Chicago coppers at his side stood at attention and saluted him.

Authorities said the suspect shot the security worker near the store. Officers responded, and the suspect tried running away and shot one of the officers in the shoulder, authorities said.

They also said police who responded at some point fired back and struck the suspect.

peacekeeping mission forces (AMISOM) headquarters in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday, a police official said.

Abdi Yusuf, a police officer in Mogadishu's Dharkinley neighborhood, told Anadolu Agency over the phone that several mortar shells landed in a residential area near Somali Adan Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.

Local media reported that a father and an infant were among the victims of the attack, claimed by al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
.

The targeted UN compound, known as Camp Halane, houses several Western diplomatic missions including those of Britannia and the United States.

Sources in the compound who spoke to Anadolu Agency over the phone on condition of anonymity confirmed that several mortar shells also landed in and around the airport where the UN compound is also located.

Somali leaders are currently meeting in the same compound to end a months-long political and election stalemate.

This is the second time the UN compound has been targeted in less than a month, following a March 9 attack with no reported casualties.

Two Suspects in Al-Wirfalli Assassination Arrested
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Thursday, the Joint Security Chamber of Benghazi announced the arrest of two suspects in the liquidation of Special Forces Commander in the Libyan National Army (LNA), Mahmoud al-Wirfalli.

In a statement, the chamber said that the arrest of the suspects was based on reports by the Benghazi Military Prosecution. A third suspect is believed to have fled to Egypt. It pointed out that legal measures will be taken to ensure that he is brought in for investigation.

The statement called on citizens to cooperate with the security chamber or the nearest security authority, by providing them with any information that would benefit the investigation.

On Wednesday, unidentified button men in Benghazi rubbed out al-Wirfalli. The LNA commander and two of his bodyguards were attacked outside the Arab Medical University Hospital.

This comes amid growing friction between rival factions in eastern Libya, which could further degenerate into a series of retaliatory attacks.

’s RADA Special Deterrence Forces announced on Friday, the arrest of a gang involved in armed robbery against gold and foreign currency merchants in the al-Musheer market in Tripoli. In a video statement, RADA claimed that the gang consisted of six people, with four of them having been arrested. In addition to robbing merchants, the gang had been stealing vehicles since 2014.

Friction between rival factions in Libya has been escalating for some time, and could further degenerate into a series of retaliatory attacks.

The interim Government of National Unity (GNU) was sworn into office this month, taking over from the two rival administrations based in east and west. The eastern administration, backed for years by the LNA, handed over power to the GNU on Tuesday in Benghazi.

On Wednesday, UN Special Envoy Jan Kubis told the Security Council: "Various gangs continue to operate without hindrance, human rights

31 firearms, 81 grenades, two grenade launchers, $1.8 MILLION in cannabis seized in London (Canada) bust
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] Ontario Provincial Police have seized $1.8 million worth of illegal cannabis as part of a massive drug bust in London, Ontario, according to a blurb.

The bust was part of a larger operation, dubbed "Project Weaver," raiding illegal cannabis growers across southwestern Ontario. Illegal grow-ops in Barrie, Brantford, Brant County, St. Thomas, and Oakland were raided on Mar 9, leading to the London location being raided on Mar 12.

A total of ten people have been collectively handed 268 criminal charges related to the illegal operations. Three of them remain in jug while the other seven were given conditional release.

$979,862 worth of cannabis, $58,720 worth of cannabis plants, $60,120 worth of hash, $419,260 worth of oils, $273,611 worth of cannabis isolates, $7,615 worth of packaged cannabis, and $218,282 in cash were seized in the London operation.

Police also seized 31 firearms, 81 grenades, two grenade launchers, three explosive projectiles, psilocybin, MDMA, and cocaine.

"Project Weaver has revealed the availability of truly alarming offensive weapons and firearms, which compromise the safety of the citizens of Ontario," said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique. "It is imperative that law enforcement continue the fight against illegal firearms and those who choose to engage in their trafficking."

The raids ultimately affected four criminal cannabis networks and led to the shutting down of two cannabis storefronts.

Iraq Secures Border with Syria to Prevent Infiltration of ISIS Militants

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Iraq’s government announced taking a series of new measures to prevent the infiltration of ISIS holy warriors through the border with Syria.
Commander of the Border Guards Lieutenant General Hamid al-Husseini announced on Thursday that fortifications have been initiated to secure the borders, including the installation of thermal cameras and control towers.

"More than 150 control towers will be erected in Mount Sinjar," he noted, stressing the efficiency of the thermal-camera systems.

According to Husseini, the situation is constantly improving.

The 617 kilometer-long border will be under the border guards’ control, he stressed, pointing to their determination to eliminate the threat posed by ISIS remnants.

ISIS holy warriors recently stepped up their attacks in Iraq, prompting the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
to expand its training mission in the country from 500 to around 4,000 personnel.

Notably, Baghdad and Washington revealed earlier that US military has cut troop levels in Iraq to 2,500 amid continuous calls for foreign troops to leave the country.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog had finished eating the rat terrier...
attacks on US targets in Iraq continue despite a number of gangs announcing a truce and vowing not to attack US interests, including the US Embassy in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.

On Thursday, a roadside improvised bomb targeted a convoy carrying supplies for the US-led coalition forces on an international road in Diwaniyah. No causalities were reported.

The carrier left the port of Toulon, southeastern La Belle France, last month on a new mission to the eastern Mediterranean and from there to the Indian Ocean later as part of the "North" operation, referring to the French contribution to the international coalition fighting ISIS.

"The mission includes showing that we are able to deploy the aircraft carrier strike group wherever we decide," said the commander of the Naval Air Group escorting the aircraft carrier, Mark Oceda.
"Within a towable distance"
He added that the message of this operation is to reaffirm "freedom of navigation," according to what the French Ministry of the Armies confirmed when announcing the mission.

The French general said in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi: "I can confirm with what we saw, that we did so without any hindrance."

In addition to two frigates, a supply ship and a French submarine, the aircraft carrier is accompanied by a Belgian frigate, a Greek frigate and an American destroyer.

Hezbollah Deploys Troops Even at Russia's Hmeimim Military Base in Syria: Official
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Amid the diverse political interpretations of the circumstances of Hezbollah delegation visit to Moscow last week, Head of the Party’s Foreign Relations Official Ammar al-Moussawi stressed that the talks with the Russian officials were positive and constructive.

In an interview with al-Manar TV Channel, al-Moussawi refuted all the circulated reports about a negative Russian stance towards Hezbollah role in Syria, adding that the Party has deployed troops even at Russia’s Hmeimim Military Base in Latakia.

"This is not confidential," he said.

Al-Moussawi highlighted the military feats achieved jointly by Hezbollah forces and the Russian troops in Syria, underscoring the strategic coordination between the two sides in this regard.

Hezbollah official added that a large number of the governments which blacklist the Party try to contact it secretly, stressing that Hezbollah is not regionally and internationally isolated at all.

In this regard, al-Moussawi clarified that some Gulf countries as well as most of EU states, except Britannia and Holland, contact Hezbollah secretly to evade the US pressures, noting that even the Party’s ties with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
were not disrupted at all.

Al-Moussawi also narrated that once a foreign official visiting Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
started his meeting with Hezbollah command before the government officials, adding that he justified his step by saying that the Party’s name was always present during his meetings in a certain Arab country.

"That’s why I wanted to get acquainted with Hezbollah," al-Moussawi quoted the foreign official as saying.
