On Sunday, a high-ranking military source in the Sobol Al-Salam Brigade, claimed that at least 26 mercenaries were killed in armed confrontations with the Libyan National Army (LNA) in the southern city of Al-Kufra.
The source added that LNA forces were able to arrest 14 mercenaries, and seize four armed vehicles during the clashes. The brigade had previously announced the closure of the border crossings with Sudan and Chad, until further notice.
It called on all vehicle and truck drivers to abide by the decision, given that “remnants of these criminal gangs” are being chased across the Chadian-Libyan border.
The area is notorious for being controlled by gangs, drug smugglers, and human traffickers, most of whom are from neighbouring states. The operation was reportedly targeting illegal immigrants, and drug dealers.
Libya has become the preferred point of departure for thousands of migrants wishing to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.
Last year, the Director of the Moral Guidance Department at the LNA, Major General Khaled Al-Mahjoub revealed that there were several attempts to expel mercenaries from southern Libya.
Al-Mahjoub stressed that they were “securing all areas of southern Libya,” noting that there are serious “attempts by mercenaries to destabilise southern Libya.” He claimed that Turkey has an interest in the continuing instability in Libya.
LNA Spokesman, Ahmed Al-Mismari also announced that local forces from the Sebha Military Region had confronted subversive elements.
Libyan security forces have seized shipments of smuggled fuel, during desert patrols south of the city of Bani Walid. In a statement, the 444th Brigade warned “smugglers and saboteurs” that it would not hesitate to pursue and apprehend them.
Since mid-February, the Sirte region has witnessed an aggravation of the fuel crisis. This is due to the lack of gasoline at distribution stations operating in the region, resulting in citizens having to queue up for fuel.
In January, Libyan National Army (LNA) forces began “a wide and comprehensive military operation in the south of the country to impose security, the Commander of Southern Operations and the Sebha Military Region, Major General Al-Mabrouk Sahban said.
He added that, the first phase of the military operation will target all violators participating in random construction, drug trafficking, smuggling, illegal immigration, and armed groups.
The second phase is set to target illegal fuel stations, which distribute smuggled fuel at exorbitant prices. The phase will not start until fuel is available at all stations licensed by the Libyan state.
“Distributing fuel to the Sebha oil depot is unfair due to the lack of adequate control over the distribution stations. This is in addition to the manipulation of distribution stations by several parties,” Sahban said. He stressed that there are efforts by the LNA aimed at delivering fuel to all Libyans.
In an interview with Al-Ain News, he added that they are showing great interest in the Murzuq Basin. As several meetings have been held for a comprehensive settlement between the parties of the city.

Shafaq News/ Iraq’s Security Media Cell announced, on Monday, the arrest of two terrorists in the capital, Baghdad.
The Cell said in a statement that the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency in the Ministry of Interior had arrested two terrorists in Baghdad, for belonging to ISIS.
“One of the detainees worked in transporting terrorist elements to different areas while the other worked within the so-called Al-Anbar sector.
Legal measures were taken against them. The statement added.
In 2017, Iraq declared final victory over ISIS after Iraqi forces drove its last remnants from the country, the militant group captured about a third of Iraq's territory.
The war has had a devastating impact on the areas previously controlled by the militants. About 3.2 million people remain displaced.
Yet, ISIS still has sleeper cells in several Iraqi Governorates.

Shafaq News/ Turkey's warplanes reportedly bombarded sites of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) inside the territory of the Kurdistan Region today, Monday.
A security source told Shafaq News Agency that the bombardment targeted, for the first time, Balinda village in Barzan area, the PKK sites, northeast of Duhok.
The bombardment broke the windows of several houses, as the shells landed 2 km away from them, according to the source.

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A domestic demining team in Baghouz town, 140 km east of Deir ez-Zor, removed around 175 pieces of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW), yet multiple still exist under rubble or among the charred vehicles, an official of the team said on Sunday.
Remnants of vehicles, landmines, and unexploded remnants of war left by the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) threaten civilians in Baghouz.
The team started the campaign of demining with the help of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Muhammad To’meh, a member of Baghouz local council and the executive manager of Bokra Ahla (Tomorrow is better) team, said.
Some of the unexploded ordnances were in the condition of explosion, “The team is keeping up the volunteering work,” he said.
The Bokra Ahla demining team called on the NGOs to clear the areas of the landmines but it has received no reply so far, according to To’meh.
To date, the ERW have claimed lives of 15 persons while approximately 50 others were injured. Some have their limbs amputated and others lost their eyes.
Baghouz was ISIS’s last stronghold before the SDF declared its defeat in brutal battles in 2019 with the US-led Global Coalition aerial surveillance.
The engineering team run by the SDF said it assisted the Bokra Ahla team to remove the landmines from some residential neighborhoods.
Afif al-Hamadah, a resident of Baghouz, said his family live in the most dangerous point on earth, where Rubble, wreckage and landmines spread on a large scale.
Landmines left by ISIS have claimed lives of many people of the town, according to al-Hamadah.
“My nephew’s hand was amputated because a landmine exploded while he was raising the cattle near his house.”
“We feel it is not safe for our children to go out anymore,” he added.
He called on NGOs to assume its responsibilities to clear the areas from the ERW which have paralyzed movement in the town.
