Afghanistan
Taliban conduct sweeping house-to-house search across Kabul, ban evacuations
[IsraelTimes] Spokesperson says they are looking for armed ’kidnappers, thieves and looters’ after string of robberies and kidnappings in Afghanistan’s capital

The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
are conducting a massive security sweep of Kabul and other Afghan cities, their front man said Sunday, going house-to-house in search of weapons and criminals blamed for a recent spate of robberies and kidnappings.

The operation, which started Friday, has alarmed many who fear being targeted because of their association with the previous Western-backed regime or the US-led foreign forces who finally withdrew on August 31.

Some irate residents posted videos on social media showing homes they said had been trashed during Taliban searches, but several people told AFP their encounters had been polite and cursory.

"It was just my nephew at home when they came and they made a big mess," said one resident, who asked not to be named, showing AFP a series of pictures that revealed considerable disruption.

The Taliban called the sweep a "clearing operation."

"We are trying to take steps against those kidnappers, thieves and looters who have weapons in their hands and threaten the lives of the people," front man Zabihullah Mujahid told a news conference.

He said authorities had discovered two kidnap victims during the operation, and also freed two teenage girls who they found chained in a basement.

Mujahid said light and heavy weapons, explosives, radio equipment and drones had been seized, as well as vehicles belonging to the military or government.

group were tossed into the calaboose, he said, along with nine kidnappers and 53 "professional thieves."

"We want to assure the residents of Kabul that these operations are not against the common people," Mujahid said.

"The residents of the city should be confident the search is going on carefully."

The Taliban have also stepped up street patrols in the capital and established temporary roadblocks at key intersections, where they search vehicles at random or check the identities of those inside.

Dozens of newly trained policewomen were involved in the sweep in case there were no men at houses being searched, Mujahid said.

Social media showed images and video clips of doors and wardrobes that had been bashed in, cushions and mattresses slashed open, and belongings strewn across floors.

"The intimidations, house searches, arrests and violence against members of different ethnic groups and women are crimes and must stop immediately," tweeted Andreas von Brandt, the European Union

"Despite Putin’s war we are watching you," he added, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has dominated news cycles for the past few days.

Taliban ban Afghans from evacuating amid massive security sweep
Afghanistan

[AlAhram] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
have clamped down on Afghans leaving the country as, separately, their forces continue a massive security sweep, going house-to-house across the capital Monday in a "clearing operation".

The new travel ban was announced late Sunday by Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid, who packaged the restrictions as being aimed at preventing hardship for Afghans abroad.

Evacuations organised by nations or non-governmental organizations have been banned, while even families attempting to leave the country by their own means now need "an excuse", or they will be stopped by immigration.

"I have to say clearly that persons who leave the country along with their families and have no excuse... we are preventing them," Mujahid told a presser late Sunday.

Women will also not be able to fly abroad unless accompanied by a male relative mirroring similar domestic restrictions introduced last year which bar solo travel between cities and towns.

"If they (women) want to travel abroad, they should have a chaperone," Mujahid said.

"This is the order of Islamic sharia law."

The announcement came the same weekend a search for "kidnappers, thieves and looters" kicked off in Kabul and other Afghan cities -- a so-called "clearing operation" separate from the travel measures.

The new travel restrictions will alarm tens of thousands of Afghans who have been promised asylum abroad after working with US-led foreign forces or other Western organizations during the Taliban's 20-year insurgency.

More than 120,000 Afghans and dual nationals were evacuated up to August 31 when the last US-led troops withdrew, two weeks after the hardline Islamists seized Kabul.

Thousands with similar links are still in Afghanistan, however, desperate to leave and fearful they may be targeted by the Taliban as "collaborators".

The last official evacuation by air was on December 1, although organised road convoys to Pakistain have taken place as recently as last week.

BAD CONDITIONS
Mujahid said the decision to ban departures came because the Taliban had received reports of thousands of Afghans "living in very bad conditions" abroad.

"The government has the responsibility to protect the people so this will be stopped until we get the assurance that their lives will not be endangered," he said, adding that they had never promised for evacuations to continue indefinitely.

"Initially we had said that the Americans... could take people whom they had any concerns about... But this is not a continuous promise."

Since the Taliban took over Kabul in August, Afghanistan has plunged into economic crisis, pushing even those without links to the former regime to scramble for an exit.

[AlAhram] At least nine migrants colonists died after their boat capsized off Tunisian coast, the Tunisian defense ministry said Tuesday.

The bodies were recovered by the country's coastiess while two units of the Navy rescued nine other migrants colonists, including some at death's door. They were from varying African nations, it said.

The statement did not specify how many people were believed to be on the boat. Searches were still underway.

The boat sank Monday near the port of Mahdia in a central-east region of Tunisia, from where many people try to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

According to survivors' accounts, the migrants colonists aged from about 25 to 30 had left from Sfax, the main city in south Tunisia, in the night from Sunday to Monday.

Libyan Army Kills 26 Chadian Mercenaries

The Director of the Moral Guidance Department of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Major General Khaled Al-Mahjoub announced that they had clashed with a cross-border gang near the Rabiana area, south of Al-Kufra.

In a statement, Al-Mahjoub explained that a unit belonging to the Sobol Al-Salam Brigade clashed with the gang, during a patrol.

According to press reports, at least 26 mercenaries were killed in Al-Kufra. A source added that the LNA forces were able to arrest 14 mercenaries, and seize four armed vehicles during the clashes. The brigade had previously announced the closure of the border crossings with Sudan and Chad, until further notice.

It called on all vehicle and truck drivers to abide by the decision, given that “remnants of these criminal gangs” are being chased across the Chadian-Libyan border.

The area is notorious for being controlled by gangs, drug smugglers, and human traffickers, most of whom are from neighbouring states. The operation was reportedly targeting illegal immigrants, and drug dealers.

Libya has become the preferred point of departure for thousands of migrants wishing to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

A new attack targets the US-led Coalition in Iraq

Shafaq News / An explosion occurred on Tuesday targeting a convoy carrying logistical support equipment for the US-led Coalition on the Highway between Samawa and Nasiriyah, southern Iraq.

A security source told Shafaq News Agency the attack caused no causalities.

There was no claim for responsibility.

The Iraqi authorities issued several warnings of repeated targeting of foreign forces and diplomatic missions in the country.

On January 5, the Iraqi parliament voted by majority to end the foreign military presence on the country's territory, following the killing of the Iranian Quds Force commander, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, in an American airstrike near Baghdad International Airport.

Washington accuses armed Iraqi factions linked to Iran of being behind the attacks.

IDF says Palestinian shot after hurling Molotov cocktail at troops
[IsraelTimes] Amid festivities in the northern West Bank, a Paleostinian who hurled a Molotov cocktail at troops was shot at, a military spokesperson says.

According to the IDF, some 20 Paleostinians hurled stones at soldiers and set tires on fire near the village of Burqa.

"One of the suspects approached the troops and threw a Molotov cocktail at them. The troops responded with gunfire," the spokesperson says.

The official Paleostinian Authority news agency WAFA says the man was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital in Nablus. The military is aware of this claim.

Three Paleostinians have been killed today in separate incidents. Ammar Shafiq Abu Afifa, 21, was rubbed out near the settlement of Migdal Oz under unclear circumstances, and 19-year-old Shadi al-Najm and 22-year-old Abdullah al-Housri were killed during a gunbattle near Jenin early this morning.

Palestinian shot dead by Israeli soldiers in West Bank under unclear circumstances
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian health officials say Ammar Shafiq Abu Afifa, 21, was killed by soldiers at entrance to Beit Fajjar, south of Bethlehem; IDF does not say what he was suspected of

A Paleostinian man was rubbed out by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank on Tuesday afternoon, the Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry and the Israeli military said.

Paleostinian health officials identified the man as Ammar Shafiq Abu Afifa from the al-Aroub refugee camp near Hebron. They said he was shot on the outskirts of Beit Fajjar, near Bethlehem.

Officials said that they had received the report from the PA branch that handles ties with Israel, meaning that Abu Afifa’s body was likely in Israeli custody.

Nearly four hours after the incident occurred, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that soldiers operating security cameras identified two "suspects" approaching a lookout point near the settlement of Migdal Oz.

Troops dispatched to the scene chased the two men, and opened fire toward them according to open-fire procedures, the military said. Such procedure includes shouting at a suspect to halt, firing into the air, and only using deadly force if the soldier feels threatened.

The IDF did not detail what the two men were actually suspected of doing. It said the army was investigating the matter.

Also on Tuesday, amid festivities in the northern West Bank, a Paleostinian who hurled a Molotov cocktail at troops was shot at, a military spokesperson said.

According to the IDF, some 20 Paleostinians hurled stones at soldiers, and set tires on fire near the village of Burqa. "One of the suspects approached the troops and threw a Molotov cocktail at them. The troops responded with gunfire," the spokesperson said.

The official Paleostinian Authority news agency WAFA said the man was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital in Nablus. The military was aware of this claim.

Earlier Tuesday, security officials said a battle in the northern West Bank left two Paleostinian button men dead.

The Israel Police said undercover Border Police officers came under fire while arresting a terror suspect in the Jenin refugee camp. The suspect, Emad Abu al-Heija, is a son of an imprisoned senior Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, commander.

Paleostinian media identified the two fatalities as 19-year-old Shadi al-Najm and 22-year-old Abdullah al-Housri. The Islamic Jihad

terror group immediately claimed al-Housri as one of its fighters. al-Najm was later claimed by the loosely Fatah-affiliated al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade as a "fighting member."

The West Bank has seen a rise in violent mostly peaceful confrontations between Israeli soldiers and Paleostinians in recent weeks, leaving at least six Paleostinians dead. In an increasing number of cases, soldiers entering Paleostinian areas to conduct routine arrests have been fired upon by armed terror group members, prompting shootouts.

Palestinian girl, 11, wounded as worshippers and police clash at Damascus Gate
[IsraelTimes] Moslem Paleostinians gathered to celebrate al-Israa wa al-Miraj, the anniversary of Mohammad’s journey to al-Aqsa holy site; police say Paleostinians rioted and threw stones at cops

An 11-year-old Paleostinian girl was hospitalized after being struck in the head by a sound grenade fired by police during festivities near Damascus Gate on Monday afternoon, as Paleostinians gathered in Jerusalem for an Islamic holiday.

Police dispersed groups of Paleostinians with stun grenades and blasts of acrid-smelling high-pressure water from cannons. Dozens of passersby, including women, children and a man in a wheelchair, fled for cover.

One of the sound grenades smashed in the face of the 11-year-old Paleostinian girl. Medics immediately rushed her to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in moderate condition, according to a Hadassah spokesperson.

According to police, Paleostinians had "chanted incitement and threw stones and bottles at police on the scene." A spokesperson for Jerusalem police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the maimed 11-year-old girl.

"Police forces have acted these past few hours to protect public order and prevent rioting," an Israel Police spokesperson said.

The girl’s family identified her as Manwar Burqan, a resident of the middle-class Shuafat neighborhood in East Jerusalem. Burqan is deaf and attends a special needs school in the city.

Around 25 Paleostinians were maimed during the festivities, according to the Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy. Twenty Paleostinians were arrested and four officers were maimed, according to Israel Police.

Thousands of Paleostinians had gathered in the Old City entryway to celebrate al-Israa wa al-Miraj. The holiday celebrates the miraculous "night journey" of Islam’s prophet, Mohammad, from Mecca to Jerusalem.

According to Islamic tradition, Mohammad ascended heavenwards from the al-Aqsa Mosque, which Jews also revere as the site of both Biblical temples. Paleostinian Moslems often celebrate the holiday by gathering in Jerusalem for festivities and prayer at the shrine.

Cops also appeared to violent mostly peacefully slap a Paleostinian girl while subduing her on the ground, according to footage from the scene of the festivities.

In another video, a Paleostinian runs after a cop and pushes him onto the ground as the officer grapples with a second Paleostinian.

The stairway leading to Damascus Gate is a popular site for Paleostinians to enjoy the holiday cheer before heading to the al-Aqsa Mosque for prayers. But the gateway has also become one of Jerusalem’s most charged sites.

Clashes between Paleostinians and police in the area were part of the buildup to last year’s war between Israel and the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror group. Israeli police prevented Paleostinians from sitting on the steps during Ramadan — a longtime Jerusalem tradition — leading to violent mostly peaceful festivities.

IDF says troops fire on Palestinians hurling Molotov cocktails, wounding one
[IsraelTimes] Israel Defense Forces soldiers thwarted an attempt by Paleostinian assailants to attack Israeli drivers near the West Bank town of Halhul on Monday night, the military said.

The IDF said in a statement that troops had ambushed the group who were hurling Molotov cocktails at cars on a main highway near the town, which is close to the city of Hebron.

One suspect was hit by troops’ fire, and was arrested, the IDF said.

It added that he was taken to a hospital, and would later be interrogated by authorities.

The IDF did not provide any further information about the condition of the maimed assailant.

The other two suspects apparently expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

Israelis traveling along the area’s main traffic artery, Route 60, have repeatedly been attacked with Molotov cocktails and stones in recent weeks.

Two Paleostinian button men were killed in a firefight near the West Bank city of Jenin overnight Monday.

The Israel Police said undercover Border Police officers came under fire while arresting a "terror suspect" in the Jenin refugee camp.

Paleostinian media identified the two fatalities as 19-year-old Shadi Najm, and 22-year-old Abdullah al-Housri.

Video shared online showed at least one of the button men opening fire.

There were no casualties among Israeli forces, police said, and the suspect was arrested.

Later, as the officers left the refugee camp, dozens of Paleostinians hurled stones, Molotov cocktails, and a makeshift grenade at the officers, who responded with "riot dispersal means and live fire," police said.

Images showed al-Housri’s body wrapped in the flag of Paleostinian Islamic Jihad, as well as the terror group’s logo on his firearm. The group did not immediately claim him as a member, though a local wing of the organization reportedly did.

The arrested suspect was Amad Abu al-Hija, the son of a Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, leader'>Hamas big turban
, according to Paleostinian media. It wasn’t immediately clear what he was suspected of.

The West Bank has seen a rise in violent mostly peaceful confrontations between Israeli soldiers and Paleostinians in recent weeks.

Asayish member wounded in Hawl Camp

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – A member of the Internal Security Forces of North and east Syria (Asayish) in Hawl Camp east of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, was wounded yesterday during a shooting incident by an armed group that was hiding in a tent in the first sector of the camp.

Sounds of intermittent clashes heard in the first sector, which holds Iraqi refugees, sources inside the camp told North Press.

“During a campaign of arresting an Islamic State Organization (ISIS) sleeper cells in a tent in the first sector, the Asayish patrol was shot at by a group of ISIS cells,” a security source told North Press.

The source did not provide further details about the incident.

Hawl camp witnessed intensive security measures at the entrances, as employees of NGOs were not allowed to enter until 9 o’clock this morning.

Since the last attack by ISIS sleeper cells on al-Sina’a prison in January, Hawl Camp has witnessed security incidents despite the strict security measures that accompanied the attack.

On February 9, a number of ISIS wives set six tents on fire in the camp in the foreigners sector in order to grasp the attention of the security forces.

The Hawl Camp is a house for about 15,300 families in total of 56, 000 individuals including 2,423 families of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) detained or killed militants, who hail from over than 60 countries.
