Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief September 18, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • TALIBAN TRY TO SECURE IRAN BORDER — Minister for Refugees and Repatriations Khalil-ur-Haqqani has called for increased recruitment of Taliban security forces personnel to help secure the border with Iran. His intention is to reinforce the border with more troops in order to keep Afghans from illegally entering Iranian territory. A source in the palace says this is a top priority for Iran and is being used to threaten the regime in Kabul/Kandahar to get Afghanistan to honor the water treaty agreement.

  • ZAKIR RUMORS BECOME CLEARER — Previous reporting about the wounding and/or death of the Taliban’s special military commander in Panjshir appears to be grounded in truth. A few of the journalism outlets covering Afghanistan are beginning to cover the story. We have confirmed the Taliban have set up heavy security around a hospital (location undisclosed) for the last two days, and a source in the Ministry of Defense has said that a Taliban VIP is undergoing treatment at the facility. Zakir’s death would strike a heavy blow, especially since the remaining Taliban troops in Panjshir are reportedly disorganized and some infighting between local commanders has been filmed.

  • NRF FREE TALIBAN PRISONERS, DRAW IRE —The NRF released 8 Taliban prisoners that they captured in Panjshir, drawing condemnation from some NRF supporters. Some members claim that Taliban prisoners should be summarily executed since the Taliban are extrajudicially executing Resistance prisoners. This reaction appears to be directly related to the recent massacres of NRF prisoners, given that the NRF released 40 prisoners last month without drawing the same critique.

  • KYRGYZ-TAJIK FIGHTING INTENSIFIES — Fighting between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in the disputed border regions has increased over the last 24 hours with some observers claiming Tajikistan soldiers have occupied several towns on the Kyrgyz side of the border. The conflict has the potential to widen, and Russia is said to be sending a mediating group to both capitals to de-escalate the crisis. Russia has a military presence in both countries with established military bases and mechanized forces.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kunar: 2 Talib intelligence officers were kaboomed when they vehicle passed an IED planted by the side of the road in the Suki district Friday night. The 2 officers are thought to be intelligence director Hidayatullah Haqyar and either his deputy or a bodyguard. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
Takhar: Sources reported a kaboom in the money changers section of the market in Taliqan city Saturday. Initial reports suggest a hand grenade was used to kill one and injure two. The target was unclear and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • PANJSHIR WITHOUT ZAKIR — We are monitoring the situation in Panjshir closely. If Taliban forces in the region are leaderless and disorganized, it could provide an opportunity for the NRF to launch offensive strikes. While some rumors indicate that several Taliban convoys have been seen leaving the province, we do not assess that these movements are tied to the current situation but rather are previously reported moves to reinforce the border with Pakistan along the Durand line. We assess the potential for fighting as high during this particular phase.

  • WATCH THE TAJIK-KYRGYZ CONFLICT — Regional observers are watching for escalations in the Tajik-Kyrgyz conflict. Should the fighting intensify, borders will almost certainly be closed and the bellicose relations between Tajikistan and the Taliban could see incidents along the joint border. There is also potential for domestic strife in the Gorno-Badakhshan region of Tajikistan. With Dushanbe focused on the situation with its neighbor to the North, Pamiri separatist and several other groups with grievances against the Tajik government may seek to exploit the situation.

Former Guantanamo guest is injured in Panjshir war
[KhaamaPress] Sources in northern Afghanistan claim that Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir, a popular Taliban

fighter who leads Panjshir and Andarab war, has been injured.
Also an aspiring rapper
The news spread widely in social media as a couple of local news agencies covered the story of the former Guantanamo prisoner and the popular Taliban commander for the Panjshir and Andarab war.

The Taliban has not yet showed any reaction to the news and due to restrictions for access to information within the Taliban administration, the media outlets are unable to verify and reaffirm sensitive incidents via government sources.

Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir was one of the prisoners in the U.S Guantanamo prison for several years after the US and NATO

The war has intensified as the Taliban have reportedly deployed over ten thousand military troops in Panjshir to clear the area from the opposition forces.

Both sides claim infliction of casualties, but there are no independent sources to verify and confirm.

This comes as the peace negotiations between the former Afghanistan administration and the Taliban failed last August as the Taliban took over the country after the flee of former Afghanistan's Caped President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani

Al-Shabab militants nabbed in Somalia's capital
[Garowe] The Somalian government has said 10 al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
holy warriors were arrested in an operation conducted in Mogadishu, the capital of the country, on Friday evening.

"The forces destroyed this network of al-Shabaab snuffies who were planning terrorist acts to undermine the security of the capital and to harm the public," the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism said in a statement issued here on Friday night.

Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) are interrogating the arrested Death Eaters, including the group's hitmen who were planning to kill innocent Mogadishu residents, medical doctors, and others who were in charge of the group's transport and accommodation.

NISA agents also seized three houses the holy warriors were secretly operating, their weapons, and vehicles they were using to stage attacks in the restive capital.

The government said it is committed to eradicating the snuffies and thanked the Somali people for sharing the information that has led to the arrest or killing of the Death Eaters.

The arrest came a few hours after four people were killed in a roadside blast along a road in Bula-barte, a town in the Hiran region of central Somalia on Friday night.

According to state-owned Radio Mogadishu, a prominent traditional elder, Yusuf Fidow, his son Ibrahim Yusuf and other two traditional elders, Hassan Hussein and Muqtar Haji were killed after a car they were traveling in hit a roadside kaboom planted by al-Shabaab holy warriors near Buq-Aqable village.

The Somali government has declared an all-out offensive against the holy warriors who are fighting to topple the internationally recognized government.

Early this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called on citizens to stay away from areas controlled by the holy warriors ahead of major offensives against the al-Qaeda allied terror group.

Mohamud said the Death Eater group will be confronted on all fronts, noting that they will be subjected to airborne attacks including raids in a bid to weaken its presence in Somalia.

The bad boy group still controls some parts of rural southern and central Somalia and continues to carry out high-profile attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere.

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the allied forces have intensified military operations into territory formerly controlled by al-Shabaab after driving the holy warriors out of Mogadishu in 2011.

The UAE campaign to recruit the sons of Socotra comes after the recruitment of about 150 girls and young women from the island, their ages ranged between 15 and 22 years, and transferred last August to Abu Dhabi to receive training.

Al-Qaeda had demanded a ransom of $5 million for the release of the abductees.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, soldiers operating in the area seized a bag with six handguns and a number of magazines near the Paleostinian village of Marj Na’je.

The IDF adds that two suspects were later arrested nearby by troops and coppers.

The IDF said last month there had been a "significant rise" in attempts to smuggle weapons into Israel and the West Bank from Jordan, counting more than 300 guns seized since the beginning of the year. In 2020 and 2021 combined, 300 firearms were seized along the eastern frontier, the IDF said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia Targets Syria’s Idlib Amid Mutual Shelling In De-Escalation Zone
Posted separately from the rest of the Turkey-Syria border zone stories because as far as I can tell based on this article, it’s a war of all against all over there, not just Turkey ruthlessly expanding.
[NPASyria] Russian aircrafts renewed on Saturday their raids on areas controlled by Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, known as Syrian National Army (SNA) in the countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria.

While de-escalation zone in the countryside of Aleppo and Idlib in northwest Syria witnessed mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and SNA factions.

This escalation comes in tandem with the entry of a UN aid convoy from Syrian government-held areas to Idlib, controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly al-Nusra Front).

A military source of the SNA told North Press that four Russian aircrafts, S24 and S34, targeted with about 10 airstrikes the vicinity of the western part of Idlib, and a stone sawmill near the town of Hafsarjah, west of Idlib.

The source added that the Russian airstrikes caused injury to civilian working in one of the stone sawmills.

Military sources in National Front for Liberation told North Press that the Syrian government forces targeted with 100 artillery shells and rockets the vicinity of the town Atarib and the villages of Makalbis, Tuqad, al-Wsata, al-Qasr, Kafr Amma and Sheikh Suleiman, west of Aleppo.

The government forces targeted the towns and villages of, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Benin, al-Ruweiha and the vicinity of al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib.

They also targeted the villages of al-Ghassaniyah, al-Ghania, and Kafr Yadin in the western countryside of Jisr al-Shughur, without information about human casulities according to the same source.

Meanwhile, SNA factions targeted the government forces’ posts in the town of Kinsabba and Jabal Abu Ali in the northern countryside of Latakia with heavy artillery and rockets, and other posts in Base 46, Urum al-Kubra, and Basratun, west of Aleppo.

For months, the areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria, especially in south of Idlib and west of Aleppo, continue to witness daily exchange of bombardment between the SNA factions and the government forces, despite being part of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020, which stipulates a halt of all military actions in Idlib.

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. Amid mobilization by the pro-Iranian militias, military reinforcements, including heavy machinery, were brought in with the aim to comb the area after the attackers bravely ran away.

The Iranian-backed factions along with Syrian government forces control large swathes of the Syrian Desert and east countryside of Deir ez-Zor that witnessed recently battles with ISIS.

Turkey-Syria Border: Turkish Forces and Catspaws Continue Breaching Ceasefire Agreement In NE Syria versus Kurds and Syrian army
It’s hard work, expanding the first stage of the neo-Ottoman reconquista, but President Erdogan does not hold back to help others die to achieve it.
Turkish Forces Continue Breaching Ceasefire Agreement In NE Syria

[NPASyria] Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, known as Syrian National Army (SNA), have escalated their shelling for the second week of September, targeting contact lines north of Hasakah Governorate, in a clear breach of the ceasefire agreement.

Following the Ottoman Turkish incursion into northeastern Syria in October 2019, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) 32 km away from the Ottoman Turkish border.

The SDF withdrew from the border areas according to the agreement, but Turkey continues targeting the area.

Last week, the Ottoman Turkish forces breached the ceasefire agreement dozens of times by targeting multiple areas and thus causing material damages in both public and privet properties.

Tel Tamr, which has a population of about 25.000 and is 30 km away from the Syrian-Ottoman Turkish border, is of strategic importance as it is a junction on the M4 Highway linking the Jazira region in northeast Syria to Aleppo governorate in northwest.

The town has been under constant attack by Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliated SNA, for more than two years.

Water Cutoff To Hasakah Is War Crime – Syrian Foreign Ministry

[NPASyria] Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stressed on Friday water cutoff to citizens of Hasakah, northeast Syria, by "Ottoman Turkish occupier" and its affiliated "terrorist" Syrian opposition factions is a war crime and a crime against humanity.

On its official twitter account, the ministry said that the international community should "act to stop it immediately," according to state-run SANA News Agency.

"Cutting off water to citizens in Hasaka and other Syrian cities for more than 50 days is an inhuman and immoral act, and whether it was committed by the original, who is the Ottoman Turkish occupier, or the agent, who is terrorist organizations, it remains a war crime and a crime against humanity under International humanitarian law," the ministry added.

It went further saying that releasing condemnation does not work anymore, thus "the international community must move to stop these practices immediately, as their continuation will lead to human disasters and pandemics."

As cholera disease is spreading across Syria, cutting off water from Alouk pumping station in the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) to Hasakah city and its countryside pushes people to use contaminated water, putting lives of the residents of the region at risk.

Alouk water station, which lies in Sere Kaniye in the northern countryside of Hasakah, is the only water resource feeding the city and its countryside.

and its affiliated armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), since the Ottoman Turkish invasion of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in October 2019.

Since then, Turkey has cut off water to Hasakah 27 times, according to official statements by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

About a month ago, Turkey has cut off drinking water to Hasakah, depriving all the city’s residents of water ever since.

On September 3, Civil Affairs Team of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS handed over the AANES 13 water tankers to provide drinking water to the city of Hasakah.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.

Mutual Bombardment Continues In Syria’s De-Escalation Zone

[NPASyria] On Friday, areas in the de-escalation zone in the countryside of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama, northwest Syria, witnessed persistent exchange of shelling between the Syrian government forces and the Ottoman Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition factions.

Military sources of the opposition told North Press the government forces targeted, with dozens of artillery shells and missiles, the opposition sites in the towns and villages of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Benin, Fleifel, al-Ruweiha and al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain south of Idlib.

The sources added that the government shelling also hit the villages and towns of al-Habatah, Kafr Amma, Kafr Nouran, Tuqad, Maklabis, Sheikh Suleiman, al-Wasatah, al-Qasr west of Aleppo.

Additionally, the government forces targeted the villages of Sirmaniyah and Enkawi in Ghab Plain west of Hama, according to the same sources.

Sources in the National Front for Liberation told North Press that al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room targeted with heavy artillery shells and missiles the government forces’ positions in Base 46 and the village of Tadil west of Aleppo.

For months, the areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria, especially in south of Idlib and west of Aleppo, continue to witness daily exchange of bombardment between the SNA factions and the government forces, despite being part of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Turkish Shells Hit Villages In Syria’s Aleppo Northern Countryside

[NPASyria] On Friday, Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliated armed Syrian opposition forces, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), targeted several villages in Aleppo northern countryside.

A local source told North Press the Ottoman Turkish forces targeted the village of Ibbin, affiliated with Sherawa district, with five shells.

The source added, "The shells fell down on the outskirts of the village and cultivated lands."

It went further saying, "The Ottoman Turkish forces and the SNA factions also targeted the village of Tel Madiq and Shahba dam in Shahba region with several shells, reporting only material losses."

In the evening, Syrian government forces targeted with four missiles the vicinity of Azaz Hospital in the northern countryside of Aleppo, according to the same source.

The villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo, for months, have been subjected to successive shelling by the Ottoman Turkish forces and the SNA factions affiliated with them, reporting material and human losses, as well as spreading panic among residents.

Constant Turkish Shelling Targets North Of Syria’s Aleppo

[NPASyria] On Saturday, Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliated armed Syrian opposition factions shelled outskirts of the village of Sheikh Issa in the northern countryside of Aleppo with seven mortars, causing material damages.

Coincidently, Ottoman Turkish artillery shelled outskirts of the town of Tel Rifaat with two shells that fell on agrarian lands, exclusive sources told North Press.

A military source said the Syrian government forces targeted with a number of shells Tel Jibrin-Marea road in north of Aleppo, causing material damages.

The town of Tel Rifaat, 35 km north of Aleppo city, has been a shelter for Afrin displaced people since 2018 following the Ottoman Turkish invasion of Afrin and its countryside which resulted in the displacement of about 300.000 of the original inhabitants.

Turkey’s President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. has recently announced plans to carry out another major military cross-border incursion into northern Syria. Erdogan specified his targets in the two northern Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat.

August has been one of the deadliest months in north and northeast Syria. Ottoman Turkish dronezaps were active. The strikes allegedly targeting military sites resulted in civilian’s deaths too, many were children.

In a blurb in August, Save the Children said that at least 40 children were killed or injured in up to August 24 in north and northeast Syria.

"We urgently call on all parties to the conflict to de-escalate tensions and to take all possible steps to keep children safe from harm. No child should ever be in the firing line," said Beat Rohr, Save the Children’s Interim Response Director for Syria.

Deir Ez-Zor: ISIS Claims Responsibility For Attacking SDF In Deir Ez-Zor Sep 16, 2022
[NPASyria] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Organization (ISIS) claimed on Thursday responsibility for targeting water truck of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of al-Shuhail, 40 km east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

The ISIS-run Amaq News Agency published a statement in which it said that ISIS holy warriors "targeted an SDF water truck on the main road in the village of al-Tugeihi with machineguns."

"The attack resulted in the killing of the driver, Ahmad al-Harib, and the injury of another," the statement added.

Although the SDF launches intensive security operations, the countryside of Deir ez-Zor has recently witnessed an increase in killing incidents carried out against SDF fighters, employees of the Autonomous Administration, tribal figures and civil residents.

Since the beginning of this year, ISIS grabbed credit of 132 attacks against SDF forces, most of them in Deir ez-Zor, according to statistics made by North Press.

The SDF keeps pursuing ISIS sleeper cells in Deir ez-Zor eastern countryside with the aim to maintain security and stability of the region.

On September 10, ISIS carried out an operation against SDF in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor describing the operation as "Dire Revenge" for ISIS family members in Hawl Camp.

Israeli Army Notices Iranian-Backed Militias Withdrawal From Syria
[NPASyria] Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) said, on Thursday, that the Israeli army noticed the withdrawal of Iranian-backed militias from multiple posts in Syria.

IPBC said citing a military source as saying, "Israeli army noticed the withdrawal of Iranian-backed militias from multiple posts in Syria."

The corporation did not mention any further information regarding those groups as it called them, or the places from which they withdrew.

Iranian-backed militias are deployed in government-held areas, especially the Syrian desert and southern Syria in addition to other areas.

Israel has conducted dozens of air raids in Syria in the last few years directly targeting positions of Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militias , notably the Lebanese Hezbollah.

Israel hardly ever mentions carrying out any attacks in Syria, yet the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed in an annual statistics report that it launched around 50 attacks on targets located in Syria over 2020, giving no further detail
