Eleven killed in Tunisia tribal clashes
[Al Jazeera] Eleven people have been killed and more than 100 injured in fierce tribal festivities in the southern Tunisian mining town of Metlaoui, the country's state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported.

The violence over the weekend led local authorities to deploy additional security forces and to extend a curfew that was imposed on Metlaoui on Saturday.

Clashes in the town between rival tribal factions began late on Friday after an altercation between two youths.

People fought battles with homemade bombs, guns and iron bars in the town, about 400km southwest of the
capital, Tunis, after rumours circulated that only certain tribes would be offered jobs at the nearby Gafsa phosphate complex.

"People are scared," Ahmed Achouri, a Metlaoui resident, told the Rooters news agency by telephone.

"We are in a real war ... we ask for more security."

State-run media had earlier put the corpse count at seven but state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
later said 11 people had been killed.

Latest victims
Among the latest victims were a 30-year-old man knifed to death early on Sunday and another who died of his injuries late on Saturday, local officials told the AFP.

Also on Saturday, a father and his son died after being attacked by men with knives and sticks, and on Friday two men and a woman where rubbed out in the impoverished town in the Gafsa mining basin.

The two sides fought each other with hunting rifles, iron bars and Molotov cocktails and shops in the town were looted and burned down.

Tunisia triggered what has become known as the "Arab Spring" when popular protests forced Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, the country's long-standing leader, from power in January.

Since his fall, tribal tensions have flared in Metlaoui, which is reeling from high unemployment, and the country's new leaders have struggled to restore stability.

The lengthened nightly curfew in the town will now run from 4pm (14:00 GMT) until 6am every day, the TAP state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
reported.

Britain
40 UK universities are now breeding grounds for terror as hardline groups peddle hate on campus
England's universities have become a breeding ground for extremism and terrorist recruitment, according to a disturbing government report. Officials have identified 40 English universities where ‘there may be particular risk of radicalisation or recruitment on campus’.

A soon to be published Whitehall report – seen by the Daily Mail – will point to a string of examples of students going on to commit terrorist acts against this country or overseas.

Alarmingly the Prevent review says that ‘more than 30 per cent of people convicted for Al Qaeda-associated terrorist offences in the UK . . . are known to have attended university or a higher education institution. ‘Another 15 per cent studied or achieved a vocational or further education qualification. About 10 per cent of the sample were students at the time when they were charged or the incident for which they were convicted took place.’

China-Japan-Koreas
S Korea threatens North with retaliation
[Iran Press TV] South Korea's Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin has warned that any future attacks by the North Korean military will be met with a very strong response.

Kim made the remarks at a regional security conference in Singapore on Saturday. He noted that Pyongyang was becoming increasingly bold in its provocations.

"Proactive deterrence means that if there is a provocation, we will respond very strongly,'' Kim said. "I don't think we can be reserved because they are being bolder and bolder.''

The remarks came a day after the North Korean military vowed on Friday to launch "retaliatory military actions'' against South Korea.

"The North will launch practical and overall retaliatory military actions to wipe out the group of traitors at a stroke,'' the North's Korean People's Army said in a statement.

The threats come days after Seoul admitted that its reserve force units had used photos of Pyongyang's ruling family as targets during firing drills.

Europe
Police tight-lipped about Islamist links to Helsinki bomb scares
A group calling itself a supporter of worldwide jihad has praised two bomb scares that happened in Helsinki this past weekend on an internet discussion forum.

On Friday morning, police cordoned off an area in the Pasila district after a home-made device was found. Early Saturday, a petrol bomb was thrown into the yard of an unmanned service station in another part of the city. The group said online that it hoped fresh attacks would succeed.

The Finnish Security Police (SUPO) says it is taking the matter seriously but does not wish to speculate for now.

SUPO’s communications director said that police are responsible for investigating the incident, but that SUPO would give its expert assistance if a terrorist link was revealed.

“Naturally we are employing our own channels. Previously we have not had such threats to civilian targets,” she noted. No one was apparently injured in either incident.

The internet message was ascribed to Abu Sulaiman al-Nasser, who is considered to be one of the most followed al-Qaeda bloggers in the world. The same name was connected with a recent online threat made against Finnish peacekeepers in Afghanistan.

Evan Kohlmann, author of Al-Qaida's Jihad in Europe, published this of the message on his Twitter feed IntelTweet: "On Friday, a homemade bomb was found in the capital of Finland Helsinki... We ask Allah that the next bomb is successful." Kohlmann says the message was "another apparent terror threat to Finland, written in both Arabic and Finnish."

Pakistan helped US target Kashmiri: reports
[Dawn] Pakistain helped the United States locate Ilyas Kashmiri who was killed this weekend by an American drone in South Wazoo, the US media reported on Sunday.

The Washington Post reported that the Al Qaeda commander, who also headed a group called Harkatul Jihad al Islami, was on a list of terrorist leaders the United States gave to Pakistain last month.

The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
reported that Kashmiri's death "could go some way to alleviating the strained relations" between Pakistain and the US, particularly after the covert raid on the late Osama bin Laden
... who had a brief but splitting headache...
's compound in Abbottabad.

After Bin Laden's death, the US media projected Kashmiri as "the next Bin Laden" and serious contender for the top slot in Al Qaeda. A congressional publication called The Hill noted that "when combined with the Bin Laden killing, eliminating Kashmiri via a remotely piloted drone could give new fuel" to the increasing number of US politicians who say the US needs a "a small but lethally tailored" force in Afghanistan, not tens of thousands of conventional troops.

Headley wanted to travel undercover to Fata to present Kashmiri with an ornate sword that could be fitted with a homing device to set up a US missile attack, according to his testimony before a Chicago court. Headley also told the court about a possible plot by Kashmiri to kill the CEO of defence manufacturer Lockheed Martin because he thought the company makes the predator drones.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a meeting. It was to be his last...
some US media outlets published an interview with a Punjabi Taliban leader, Qari Mohammad Idrees. Qari Idrees said Kashmiri was sitting with friends at an apple orchard when he came under attack. Two missiles hit the same place where the beturbanned goon commander and his men were sitting.

Quetta Shura propaganda baseless: Malik
[Pak Daily Times] There is no evidence of Taliban presence in the city and the propaganda in this regard is baseless, Interior Minister Rehman Malik
Pak politician, current Interior Minister under the Gilani administration. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. He later joined the Pak Peoples Party and was chief security officer to Bhutto. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Näwaz Shärif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men.
said on Sunday.

"The propaganda of the Taliban Quetta Shura is baseless, if any one has concrete evidence about their claims, it must be shared with government", he said.

Talking to the media soon after his arrival in the thriving provincial capital, Malik dispelled the impression about the alleged presence of Taliban in Quetta.

"Over 30 raids have been conducted on the presence of Taliban across Balochistan, but they were not found," he said.

"We will take strict action against the Quetta Shura if we were provided with concrete and sufficient proof and evidence," he added.

The minister expressed his concern over the incidents of terrorism and said that those involved in these acts, were enemies of humanity. He said the situation in Balochistan was improving with every passing day. "We would always welcome our disgruntled Baloch brethren to sit with us for dialogue and find out a durable solution to the Balochistan issue," Malik said.

Netanyahu cool to French plan for negotiations
JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded coolly on Sunday to France’s proposal to convene Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Paris, saying the United States might want to pursue an initiative of its own.

“We will study the proposal and discuss it with our friend, the United States,” Netanyahu told his cabinet, in remarks released by the prime minister’s office.

“The Americans also want to promote initiatives, and we have our own thoughts, too,” he said, without elaborating on possible ways to revive US-sponsored peace talks that fizzled soon after they began last September.

“We will see how the (French) proposal fits with other initiatives. Understandably, it’s not possible to implement all of them, and it’s better to concentrate on one initiative and move it forward,” Netanyahu said.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, on a visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank this week, offered to host talks this month or in early July to discuss ideas for a Palestinian state raised last month by US President Barack Obama.

Israel has traditionally been reluctant to embrace a major European role in Middle East peace-making, preferring to have its main ally, the United States, take the lead. Obama’s proposal to use Israel’s pre-1967 war frontiers as the starting point for negotiations on a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israeli forces in that conflict, has drawn Netanyahu’s ire.
So it might be better to have the French lead. That way one can be sure everything will be bogged down, and that gets Israel to 2013 and a new American president.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday the French initiative was acceptable “in principle” and that it relates to Obama’s view of the 1967 borders as the basis for statehood talks.

Netanyahu, who met Juppe on Thursday, has said a return to Israel’s narrow 1967 frontiers would leave it with indefensible borders. He clashed publicly with Obama over the issue during a tense visit to Washington two weeks ago.

#2  In this case, the Europeans have made their hostility to the Israelis so well known that there is no way they can be acceptable as a neutral participant.

That being said, once again most of this is the Israelis fault, for not having dealt with the Palestinian problem long ago, by kicking them all out. Their waffling, and wanting to be liked by everyone, has turned the world against them.

Egypt's Tantawi, Barak discuss Shalit deal
Defense Minister Ehud Barak held a phone conversation with Egypt's military leader Mohamed Tantawi Sunday about a possible deal to release Gilad Shalit, an occurrence that suggests that real progress has been made in negotiations to release the captive soldier.

The Defense Ministry issued a statement saying that Barak and the head of Egypt's Higher Military Council discussed the need for an immediate release of Shalit, who has been held captive by Hamas for 1,806 days. They also spoke about maintaining the calm along the shared borders and other regional security issues. According to the statement, Barak and Tantawi agreed that maintaining the peace accord between Israel and Egypt is of great importance – a pillar of stability in the region.
That'll change the moment the Muslim Brotherhood takes over in Cairo.
Political elements told Ynet that the Shalit deal is at a sensitive stage, but has finally been brought back to the negotiating table after a long period of silence. They said that Egypt has "gotten back in the game" after the protests in Cairo, and so the prisoner swap is back on the region's daily agenda.

It was reported Saturday that Hamas Deputy Politburo Chief Moussa Abu Marzouk handed the Egyptian authorities the organization's final position on the Shalit deal. Abu Marzouk apparently submitted the final answer after speaking with the leader of the Hamas military wing, Ahmed Jabari.

Despite recent statements by Egypt's former ambassador to Israel and the Palestinian envoy to Moscow that the deal is on the verge of completion, a member of the Hamas politburo in Damascus, Izzat al-Rishq, denied that any progress has been made.

Shalit's parents, Noam and Aviva Shalit, met with French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe this past Thursday, but said that they "did not receive any news."

Abbas agrees to peace talks based on 1967 borders
[Pak Daily Times] Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
has told La Belle France he is ready to attend a Gay Paree peace conference if Israel accepts talks based on the 1967 borders, an aide told AFP on Sunday.

Nimr Hammad, a political advisor to Abbas, said the president had told French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe that he agreed officially to La Belle France's proposal to host a peace conference in Gay Paree before the end of July.

Juppe raised the possibility of the conference during a visit to Israel and the West Bank last week. "President Abbas told Foreign Minister Juppe that he agrees officially to the French initiative of holding an international peace conference in Gay Paree," Hammad told AFP. But Abbas insisted that participation be conditioned on using the lines which existed before the 1967 Six-Day War as the basis for negotiating future borders, Hammad said.

"In order to start negotiations, their basis must be ending the Israeli occupation of Paleostinian land occupied since 1967, and the borders of the state will be determined on this basis with land swaps agreed by both the Israeli and Paleostinian sides," he said.

After meeting Paleostinian premier Salam Fayyad
...Fayyad's political agenda holds that neither violence nor peaceful negotiations have brought the Paleostinians any closer to an independent state. The alternative to both, violent negotiations, doesn't seem to be working too well, either...
in Ramallah on Thursday, Juppe said La Belle France was willing to transform a scheduled meeting of international donors into a broader peace conference to help relaunch stalled negotiations. "We would be prepared, on the basis of a request by the (Middle East) Quartet
... The Quartet are the UN (xylophone), the United States (alto), the European Union (soprano), and Russia (shortstop). The group was established in Madrid in 2002 by former Spanish Prime Minister Aznar, as a result of the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Tony Blair is the Quartet's current Special Envoy....
, to organise in Gay Paree... before the end of July, a conference that would not be simply for the donors but a broader political conference involving the negotiation process," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that his country was still considering its response.

"I heard the proposal brought by French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe," Netanyahu told media at the beginning of Israel's weekly cabinet meeting. "We very much appreciate our French friends and I will respond to them after we have considered matters. We will study the proposal and discuss it with our American friends as well."

Netanyahu added that he would not consider resuming negotiations with any Paleostinian government that includes the movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, which last month signed a unity deal with Abbas's Fatah movement.

"We would also like to emphasise and reiterate: negotiations will not be conducted with a Paleostinian government, half of which is Hamas, a terrorist organisation that seeks to destroy Israel," he said. La Belle France has welcomed a reconciliation deal between rival Paleostinian movements Hamas and Fatah, despite Israel's vocal opposition.

Israel says that Hamas, a krazed killer Islamist group sworn to its destruction, cannot be a party to peace moves. Juppe is to head to the United States next week to promote La Belle France's plan, which has so far drawn a non-committal response from Washington, although it endorses President Barack B.O. Obama's call for talks based on the borders in effect before the outbreak of the 1967 Six-Day War, "with agreed land swaps."

"We are in consultations with the parties and with the Quartet," State Department front man Mark Toner said on Friday. "I am not necessarily dismissing it."

"I don't think this deviant current will be able to do anything, and such primary measures and the stances [taken by the establishment] will definitely nip this current in the bud," said Boroujerdi.

"As the phrase itself indicates, this current seeks to deviate from the path of the Islamic Revolution, and abuse power and wealth. Naturally, all of this runs counter to the principles and regulations and this will not be allowed to happen," the top politician underscored.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Boroujerdi pointed to the detention of Iranian university professor Masoud Karimi in Bahrain and said the Manama government and Al Khalifa dynasty have committed legal violations and breached international regulations on numerous occasions.

He said there have been other Iranian nationals running into trouble in Bahrain, and added that measures have been taken by the Iranian Embassy
...You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!...
in Manama to deal with the issue.
