Afghanistan
Facing threats, Afghan interpreters plead for US visas
[Pak Daily Times] After a five-year wait, Mohammad Janis Shinwari is relieved to be in the United States, safe from the threats of the Taliban.

But as a former interpreter for US troops in Afghanistan, Shinwari fears for the lives of his colleagues back home, who are desperately trying to secure US visas.

"I am very worried for my friends. They have no protection," Shinwari told AFP.

"Now I want the US government to pay attention and work hard to get those other interpreters from Afghanistan to the United States," he said.

"If they get caught by the Taliban, they are going to get killed."

The 36-year-old Shinwari along with his wife and two children now live in the Washington suburbs. He might never have secured a visa without the relentless effort of a US soldier, Matt Zeller, who became his close friend.

Zeller is fiercely loyal to Shinwari because the Afghan came to his aid at a dire moment on the battlefield, gunning down two Taliban faceless myrmidons who were closing in for the kill.

"I was pinned down and I thought, this is it, I am going to die on this hillside, probably by a Taliban bullet," Zeller said. "He saved my life."

Zeller hardly knew Shinwari, but after that life-saving moment, he became fast friends with the Afghan.

Egypt's Morsi to Stand Trial for 'Espionage', Ties to Hamas
[An Nahar] Egypt's deposed president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
and former aides will stand trial for "espionage" that aided a "terrorist" campaign involving the Paleostinian bad boy Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and jihadist groups, state media reported Wednesday.

Morsi, an Islamist who the military toppled in July after a single year of turbulent rule, is already on trial over alleged involvement in the killings of opposition protesters.

Militia withdrawal "so slow it has almost stopped": Elbadri
[Libya Herald] The process or removing militias from urban areas, was going so slowly, that it had almost stopped, Sadat Elbadri, head of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Local Council, complained to fellow Libyan municipal chiefs in Tripoli today.

Elbadri, told a forum representing 34 local councils: "We need the government to solve the problems of citizens as soon as possible. The individual wants to see something tangible achieved on the ground which touches his life."

He commented that Law 27 for the removal of militias had been implemented too slowly, to the point that it has almost stopped. He added that the presence of heavy weapons has caused social as well as security problems.

The forum, which was attended by delegates from virtually all local councils except Misrata, discussed the general security situation and the need to strengthen border protection.

The council leaders also welcomed the local elections with are now under way on a rolling system which will be completed in February. They called them"an important step to transform revolution into the formation of a state and face future challenges."

Moussa denies allegations of counterfeiting constitution
[Egypt Independent] In his meeting with Faculty of Economics and Political Science students at the Shura Council on Wednesday, Constitutional Committee Chief Jerry Lewis doppelgänger Amr Moussa
... who was head of the Arab League for approximately two normal lifespans, accomplishing nothing that was obvious to the casual observer ...
denied allegations of counterfeiting the draft constitution.

Moussa said the rumors of counterfeiting are mere slander, adding that the constitution was read article by article in a public session with the 50-member panel in attendance. The articles voted on were the same ones included in the constitution, he emphasized, noting that everything was recorded through audio and video.

He described the controversy as "confusion" based on people not reading the draft. He called on everyone to read it, explaining that Egypt is at a crucial stage that requires understanding how to move forward. "We want to get Egypt out of the plight it has been through," Moussa said. "A stable stage with president and parliament should be reached in order to be able draw social and economic plans, since it's hard to do so today."

"Articles on prime minister and house of representatives in constitution put a limit to dictatorship. Powers granted to the president are not the powers of a dictator as he leads coordination between authorities and forms the cabinet in a way that doesn't offer any person powers that would make him a dictator, like what happened under [deposed president] Mubarak," he added.

Moussa noted that the draft constitution deals with Egyptian people, who live in the 21st century and not before that, so Egypt will not remain stuck in the past. He also emphasized the unprecedented rights and freedoms in the constitution, as well as freedom of scientific research and intellectual property granted by law.

Women in the constitution will occupy senior positions, he said, adding that women will join the judiciary after voting on the constitution according to the president's remarks.

Egyptians will vote on whether to approve the amended constitution on 14 and 15 January across all governorates.

C. African President, PM to Hold Talks amid Tensions
[An Nahar] The Central African Republic's interim president and prime minister were to hold talks Wednesday in a bid to end a political rift, as several European countries offered to help quell deadly sectarian violence in the country.

Tensions have spiked between rebel-leader-turned-president Michel Djotodia and Prime Minister Nicolas Tiangaye after three ministers were unexpectedly fired by presidential decree at the weekend.

Djotodia, whose Seleka rebel coalition seized power in a March coup, and Tiangaye were set to hold a "reconciliation meeting" in the presence of African mediators in the capital Bangui later Wednesday, a government source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Tiangaye, a former opposition member who was kept on as premier after the ouster of president Francois Bozize, has fled his looted home in Bangui and is now living at a base by the airport under the protection of an African-led force.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
army officials said the situation on the ground was calmer after days of bloodshed earlier this month.

"The tension has eased considerably," said General Francisco Soriano, who heads the French troops in the impoverished country. "It's been rather calm in Bangui since Friday," he said. "Is it sustainable? I don't know."

The Central African Republic spiraled into chaos after Djotodia's mainly Mohammedan Seleka rebel group overthrew Bozize in March.

France says other European nations to deploy troops to CAR
[Pak Daily Times] La Belle France has said other European nations would send troops to the Central African Republic to prop up a military force on the ground attempting to disarm warring militias.

Gay Paree had urged its European partners to pitch in and help its 1,600 troops on the ground who are battling to restore security after two weeks of fighting largely between Christians and Mohammedans.

The kaboom of sectarian violence, after months of crisis sparked by a March coup, has forced 210,000 people from their homes in the capital Bangui alone, according to the UN.

"We will soon have troops on the ground provided by our European colleagues," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in Gay Paree on Tuesday, without naming the countries.

He has previously said Poland, Britannia, Germany, Spain and Belgium were already helping with logistics.

In Brussels, a Belgian military source told AFP on condition of anonymity that the government was also considering the dispatch of some 150 troops for "a protection mission", possibly to secure airports.

The Spanish government, meanwhile, has backed plans to send a Hercules military transport aircraft with a "maintenance and support unit" of up to 60 personnel, subject to parliamentary approval. But it is not likely to include combat troops.

It is as yet unclear whether other countries will also be assisting La Belle France on the ground.

Washington has also showed its support, and will this week complete an airlift of some 850 Burundians into the country to form part of an eventual 6,000-strong African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
force known as MISCA.

The United States has pledged some $100 million in funding to MISCA.

The Pakistain National Assembly adopted a resolution, saying, "This House expresses deep concern on hanging of a veteran politician of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh for supporting Pakistain in 1971."

'Pakistan following no-interference policy in Afghanistan'
[Pak Daily Times] Winding up a debate on foreign policy, Adviser to the PM on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said on Wednesday that peace in neighbourhood is the top priority of government for which the prime minister had visited both India and Afghanistan.

He informed the Upper House of Parliament that Pakistan is following the policy of non-interference in Afghanistan and not of fighting proxy wars.
The Taliban, al-Qaeda, and the Haqqani network are all headquartered in Pakistain. Beturbanned killers cross into Afghanistan from safe areas at will. But Pakistain really has nothing to do with that. Do they?
He further said that Pakistan has no favourites in Afghanistan and its policy of non-interference in Afghanistan affairs has helped improve bilateral relations. The adviser said that Pakistan is in favour of Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.

He said 2014 presents both challenges and opportunities for Afghanistan and three kinds of transition -- political, economic and security. The issue of the Bilateral Security Agreement and residual presence of ISAF forces after 2014, he said, was still in the process of being sorted out.

The adviser said that the concept of Afghanistan as a strategic depth has become "totally outdated" and needs no more importance. He said that strategic depth means nothing both for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Nation urged to get united against terrorism
[Pak Daily Times] President Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday urged the nation to stand united and support government's efforts for countering extremism and terrorism.

Addressing a grand tribal jirga at the Presidency, the president lauded the people of tribal areas for being at the forefront in the war against terrorism and confronting difficulties with courage, determination and patience.

He said terrorism had not only damaged the national economy and brought a bad name to the country but also maligned Islam -- a religion of peace and security.

The nation would have to rise above petty differences and strive hard to highlight the peaceful identity of Islam and Pakistain, he added.

The president said he firmly believed that the people of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) were fully aware of their duties towards the country and would continue to use all their energies in the best national interests. "Pakistain is our motherland and it is our obligation to ensure its security and protection," said Mamnoon Hussain.

Ctg mob burns Pak flag
[Bangla Daily Star] A section of people set a Pak flag alight while demonstrating in Chittagong city this afternoon in protest against the country's reaction to the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah.

Around 150 people from all walks of life under the banner of "Jege Otho Bangladesh", a pro-liberation organization, held a rally in front of Chittagong Press Club where social and cultural activists, local politicians and many other like-minded people took part.

After the rally, they went to Cheragi Pahar intersection in procession around 1:00pm and burnt a flag and an effigy of a structure draped in Pakistain cricket team's jersey.

While addressing the rally, the speakers said people cannot accept Pakistain's interference in Bangladesh's domestic affairs.

They termed the interference as a threat to the nation.

Since execution of Mollah on Thursday, Pakistain drew flak for its reaction over the hanging of war criminal Mollah.

As part of its reaction, the Pakistain National Assembly Monday adopted a resolution expressing concern over the execution of Mollah who, it said, was "hanged for supporting Pakistain in 1971″.

Palestinian negotiator: peace 'framework' with Israel possible
[LATIMES] Israel and the Paleostinians should be able to reach a basic "framework agreement" for peace by the end of April and a full peace treaty within a year after that, the chief Paleostinian negotiator said Wednesday.

In a generally optimistic assessment of a grinding of the peace processor that many see as quixotic, Saeb Erekat
...negotiated the Oslo Accords with Israel. He has been chief Paleostinian negotiator since 1995. He is currently negotiating with Israel to establish a de jure Paleostinian state...
said a framework agreement would include a general accord on core issues, but would leave the details of implementation to a final treaty.

"April 29 is time for a framework agreement," Erekat told foreign news hounds in this West Bank town near Bethlehem. "We are not talking about a final peace treaty but only a framework agreement, which is halfway to a final treaty."

He said the final peace treaty will come six to 12 months after signing the framework agreement, which will be implemented in stages.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry has been a frequent visitor to the region as he has attempted to nudge both sides toward an accord. However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
the talks are said to be stuck on issues that include Israel's insistence on maintaining a military presence in part of the West Bank.

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's missions abroad.

Asiri pointed out that the Saudi embassy in Leb has "established security plans that would fit any unexpected development."

Asked about the conditions of Saudi nationals present in Leb, the diplomat said that "there aren't several compatriots in Beirut," considering that the security situation is "deteriorating."

"We have already warned our citizens not to head to Leb and we are following up the status of the nationals who are already there," Asiri said.

In November, Saudi Arabia's embassy in Beirut has called on citizens to leave Leb because of the dangerous situation.

Iran Nuclear Talks to Resume in Geneva Thursday
"How can we keep Israel from doing anything about Iran's nuclear bombs, Manolo?"
"You could always return to the negotiating table, Mr. Secretary. I'll set your afternoon coffee and croissant on your antique French coffee table, sir, and send in your secretary for dictation in twenty minutes."
[An Nahar] Talks between experts from Iran and world powers on implementing last month's nuclear deal will resume on Thursday in Geneva, a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Wednesday.

"The technical talks will be resumed tomorrow and continue until Friday" in Geneva, Nabila Massrali told Agence La Belle France Presse via email.

The experts held four days of talks in Vienna last week but the Iranians walked out after Washington expanded its sanctions blacklist against Tehran.

Under a landmark November 24 deal struck in Geneva, Iran agreed to roll back parts of its nuclear program for six months in exchange for modest sanctions relief and a promise not to impose new sanctions.

But the United States last week put a dozen overseas companies on a blacklist for evading its sanctions, angering Tehran even though Washington said the new measures did not constitute new sanctions.

But Tehran said the measures were "against the spirit" of the November 24 deal.
