Cops: Man Flashes Gun at McDonalds, Demands Job Application
[BREITBART] Police say they have charged 31-year-old Tevin Kievelle Monroe with brandishing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct after he took an unorthodox approach to procuring employment.

Monroe reportedly entered the McDonalds on St. Paul's Boulevard and asked the store manager for an application. Police say that after the manager explained twice that the application process was handled online, Monroe lifted his shirt and revealed a gun tucked in his waistband.

The manager reportedly asked Monroe to have a seat, found a paper application and contacted police.

Police locked away
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Monroe while he was filling out the application.

He did not get the position.

Tourist Distracted by Facebook Falls off Pier
[An Nahar] A tourist in Australia had to be rescued by police after plunging off a pier while browsing Facebook on her phone, officials said Wednesday.

The woman was walking along a bay in Melbourne on Monday night when she became distracted by her Facebook feed and plummeted off the pier into the chilly water, Victoria state police said.

A witness called for help and police rushed to the woman's aid. They found her flailing around in the water, about 20 meters (65 feet) from the pier.

"She was still out in the water lying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn't swim," Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the state water police told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. "She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized and said sorry."

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said she is a foreigner, but declined to say from which country.

School District Approves Rifles for School Resource Officers
(AP) GAINESVILLE, GA. – A north Georgia school board has approved a measure allowing some school resource officers to carry rifles.
Hat tip to the board.
The plan calls for a rifle to be kept in each of the city's high schools and middle schools, The Gainesville Times reported.

The weapons will be kept inside safes and will be accessible only to the school resource officer, school district officials have said. Earlier this year, district leaders said the safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition.

The estimated $6,000 cost will be split between the district and the police department, the newspaper reported. The city's police department approached the district with a proposal to allow resource officers in certain schools to carry rifles after the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012.

Board member Willie Mitchell voted against the proposal.

"To me it's like putting Band-Aids on a cancer. Yeah, we need to study ways to keep bad people out of our school system but a gun in a cabinet, away from where probably the scene would happen, isn't going to stop any damage," he told the newspaper.
"Studies" don't save lives Willie. Solid, rehearsed action plans save lives.
Although Monday's vote followed shortly after the Newtown anniversary and a shooting in Colorado, board member Maria Calkins said the decision was based on the needs of the school district, not external factors.

"This is about the relationship between Gainesville Police Department and Gainesville City Schools," Calkins said. "And what (the police) feel they need to do their job. It has nothing to do with any other school systems."
Great answer! Keep up the good work.

South Sudan fighting spreads after 'coup attempt'
[BBC.CO.UK] Fighting is spreading in parts of South Sudan after a reported coup attempt in the capital, Juba, at the weekend.

Violence has erupted in the flashpoint town of Bor, capital of eastern Jonglei state, and in Torit, capital of Eastern Equatoria.

President Salva Kiir has accused ex-vice-president Riek Machar of staging the coup - a claim he denies.

The UN called for political dialogue to end a crisis that has left hundreds dead and sparked fears of a civil war.

On Wednesday, Mr Kiir said he was willing to enter into talks with Mr Machar but that he did not know what the result would be.

Egypt Official Resigns over Error-Strewn Vote Poster
[An Nahar] An Egyptian official has resigned amid controversy over a poster to promote a new draft constitution that featured images of non-Egyptians and misspelled "Egyptians" in Arabic, state media reported Wednesday.

Amgad Abdel Ghaffar, head of the State Information Service, the government's media arm, had already apologized for the poster, which featured Caucasian-looking images under the caption: "All Egyptians Constitution."

State television said he had tendered his resignation.

The large poster, featuring a doctor, a woman, a peasant and a soldier, was meant to capture a cross-section of Egyptian society.

But at least three of the images turned out to be of non-Egyptian models featured in stock photographs on other websites.

The photographs appear to have been found using Google

The banner also misspelled "Egyptians" in Arabic, as pointed out by one journalist at the presser held earlier this week to promote the constitution ahead of a referendum in January.

Moroccan ulema expand community role
[MAGHAREBIA] The High Council of Ulema is seeking to boost its role as a provider of guidance and training to the public in Morocco.

To achieve this, it is reaching out at local levels.

During its seventeenth session held in Fez on Sunday (December 15th), the council decided that holy mans from local charters should become more accessible to schools and civil society organizations.

Strengthening the role of mosques was another central issue.

The aim is to maintain the role that these religious institutions play in educating and training believers.

High Council of Ulema chief Mohammed Yessef highlighted the role played by mosques in educating and training people.

He said that reform of the religious sphere is a key aspect of any attempt to develop society and emancipate people.

"One of the important aspects is immunising mosques and maintaining the sacredness of their role in propagating a tolerant and moderate Islam, far removed from the fanatical ideology that undermines religions and society," he said.

To achieve the desired goals, high hopes are being placed in the 200 young imams who have graduated from the Imam Training Institute.

Efforts to boost religious guidance must be aimed at both citizens in Morocco and Moroccans living overseas, especially in Europe. For this reason, the Moroccan Council of Ulema welcomed the role played by its European counterpart.

Khalid Hajji, the secretary-general of the Council of Moroccan Ulema in Europe, noted that particular attention was being paid to training for imams and preachers so that they could do their job within a framework adapted to the European context.

For her part, sociologist Samira Kassimi said the council should become more accessible to young people, in particular by answering their questions and guiding them properly, to thereby prevent them from falling prey to the fundamentalists who are ready to issue myrmidon edicts at any time.

She added it was time to make official fatwas accessible through the mass media and regional and local meetings.

Members of the public are eager to see the Council of Ulema open up to its social environment.

Jamila Matriki, a teacher, said that the Council's decision to become accessible to schools and civil society was long awaited because this will enable it to do community-level work based on scientific and objective opinions far removed from all extremism and fanaticism.

"A lot of people, especially young people, go to fanatics for opinions on religious matters," she noted.

"This means they can be led astray by bully boyz because of the vacuum in the provision of religious guidance. The institution of the Learned Elders of Islam must play its role in this regard," she said. That view was shared by Omar Jahouri, a student, who said that the gap must be filled.

"It is time to focus on schools and universities in order to raise the awareness of children and young people. But we must steer clear of official discourse and use language that brings us closer to young people's concerns," he added.

Gambia Jails Opposition Leader for Sedition
[An Nahar] The Gambia
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...

a leading opposition politician on Wednesday for sedition after he helped two supporters planning to flee to Finland, according to an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent present at the trial.

Judge Emmanuel Nkea handed United Democratic Party treasurer Amadou Sanneh a five-year sentence for writing an open letter backing the activists, who intended to seek asylum in the northern European country.

Sanneh's letter on UDP-headed paper said the pair, who were also tossed in the calaboose

for five years, risked being killed if they stayed in The Gambia, the court in Banjul was told.

All three were convicted of conspiring to commit an act "with seditious intention" while Sanneh was also found guilty of "intent to bring hatred or contempt or excite dissatisfaction against the person of the president of the republic of The Gambia."

with a narrow strip of Atlantic coast, the Gambia is ruled with an iron fist by President Yahya Jammeh, a military dictator and former wrestler who took power in a bloodless coup in 1994 and is accused of flouting human rights

The country introduced new laws in April criminalizing male prostitution, cross-dressing and the singing of abusive songs in public.

Media laws describing crimes of sedition, slander and publication of false information implemented in 2004 are so restrictive that an article, cartoon or even gesture seen as insulting to Jammeh can land a person in jail.

Nigeria President Loses Parliament Majority after 37 MPs Defect
[An Nahar] Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
lost his majority in parliament on Wednesday after 37 politicians bolted his party for a new opposition coalition, the latest political blow to hit the embattled leader.

In a letter presented to the speaker of the lower house, the politicians elected under Jonathan's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared that they had joined the All Progressives Congress, stripping the PDP of its majority in 360-seat chamber.

They listed "divisions in the political party (PDP) that sponsored our election" as the reason for the move.

The PDP had controlled the lower house since the end of military rule in 1999, but was left with just 171 politicians after Wednesday's announcement.

Jonathan has been hemorrhaging support in recent weeks, including the defection of five powerful state governors to the APC last month.

Publicly, the president's rivals have said his political troubles are tied to poor job performance, but analysts argue the real divisions are linked to Nigeria's 2015 polls.

Jonathan is widely expected to seek re-election, but has faced mounting calls to stand aside.

He has been accused of breaking an unwritten rule in the PDP which calls for the presidency to rotate between Christians from the south, like Jonathan, and Musselmens from the north.

Carrier commander spoke to US ship captain after near collision
[SCMP] The captain of aircraft carrier Liaoning had a brief, "professional" conversation with the commanding officer of the USS Cowpens after the near collision earlier this month between the American warship and a Chinese vessel.

The radio discussion between the two captains was one of several new details about the December 5 incident reported yesterday by the Global Times, a tabloid newspaper affiliated with the People's Daily.

The paper, citing an unidentified person, said that the Liaoning's commanding officer, Zhang Zheng, spoke directly to the Cowpens captain after the US missile cruiser was forced to stop in the South China Sea to avoid a collision with a Chinese ship from the Liaoning squadron.

The person told the paper that the American ship was bound to get a warning, since the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration had declared a month-long entry ban on the area on December 3 to accommodate exercises by the carrier group.

The US government has filed a formal protest over the incident, saying that the Cowpens was in international waters.

Two amphibious Chinese ships from the Liaoning squadron were sent to investigate after the US ship entered the drill area. One sounded a warning whistle, but it was ignored, the newspaper said.

The Chinese ships then sailed into the Cowpens' path to stop it, forcing the US captain to order a complete stop to avoid collision.

The newspaper also quoted an anonymous US defence official as saying that communications between the two sides was "very professional". It said another US defence official later told the Chinese side that maintaining communications could reduce the chance of mistakes.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan Brands Graft Probe 'Ugly' Anti-Government Plot
[An Nahar] Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan charged Wednesday that the detention of dozens of people in a high-profile graft probe was an "ugly" operation against his government.

Five police chiefs have been sacked in the wake of the dawn raids on Tuesday which led to the arrest of the sons of three ministers and several top business leaders, sending shockwaves through Turkey's political establishment.

The operation has exposed deep fractures in Erdogan's traditional support base, particularly a bitter feud between his government and an influential Moslem holy man who wields considerable clout in the police and the judiciary.

Political tensions are running high in Turkey ahead of a a series of elections starting next year that will pose a key test for Erdogan after the anti-government unrest in June.

Erdogan branded the graft probe an "ugly operation" against the government.

"We will not allow political plotting," he told news hounds in Ankara.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said five police chiefs had been dismissed after the raids in Istanbul and Ankara that led to the detention of 51 people.

"The judicial process should be concluded swiftly and carefully," Arinc told news hounds after a closed-door meeting with Erdogan and several ministers.

"We will always respect any decision made by the judiciary and will not engage in any effort to block this process," he added.

are suspected of numerous offenses including accepting and facilitating bribes for development projects and securing construction permits for protected areas in exchange for money, as well as gold smuggling and money laundering, according to press reports.

Among the suspects are the sons of Interior Minister Muammer Guler, Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan and Environment Minister Erdogan Bayraktar along with the chief executive of state-owned Halkbank Suleyman Aslan and construction tycoon Ali Agaoglu.

Police also seized $4.5 million in cash hidden in shoe boxes in Aslan's home, the Dogan News Agency reported, citing judicial sources.

"We believe our ministers are innocent," Arinc said, adding however that the government was ready to dismiss them if necessary.

"If there are corruption or money laundering allegations, the judiciary must shed light on them."

According to press reports, one probe centers on Azerbaijani businessman Reza Zarrab who is suspected of bribery to disguise illegal gold sales to Iran via Halkbank.

Arinc branded the police operation a "psychological war" against Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) but he did not specify who was behind the "very planned" campaign.

Kerry seeks to mollify India after diplomat's arrest in New York
[LATIMES] Secretary of State John F. Kerry on Wednesday "expressed his regret" to a senior Indian official about the treatment of an Indian diplomat who was incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
last week in New York, although he didn't concede that U.S. authorities had broken any rules during her detention, the State Department said.

Kerry's telephone call sought to calm a diplomatic furor over the treatment of Devyani Khobragade, a deputy consul general who was arrested and charged with visa fraud Thursday.

Indian officials have protested that she was strip-searched and jugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
with the general prison population at a federal building in Manhattan, in violation of diplomatic rules, while she waited for her case to be handled. She was released on bail the same day.

Kerry telephoned Indian National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon to say he "empathizes" with Indian outrage over the case, according to a State Department statement. But, the statement added, Kerry also "understands very deeply the importance of enforcing our laws and protecting victims" and "expects that laws will be followed by everyone here in our country."

In addition to the visa fraud allegations, federal authorities have charged Khobragade with breaking U.S. law by paying her housekeeper only $3.31 an hour, a third of the federal minimum wage.

Indian authorities have demanded an apology from the State Department. In retaliation for the incident, they removed security barriers around the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, asked that special airport passes issued to U.S. diplomats be returned and sought to block duty-free imports of alcohol for the embassy.

Kerry thought the phone call was "positive" and hoped the incident wouldn't damage relations between the two countries, officials said. The Indian Foreign Ministry said it was committed to providing "full security" for all diplomats.

But it was not immediately clear whether the call would ease tension in India, where leaders across the political spectrum have been demanding retaliation against the United States.

Earlier Wednesday, Indian Foreign Minister Salman Kurshid said he would bring the 39-year-old Khobragade back to India "to restore her dignity."

National media had reported a plan to shift her to a United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
post that would provide greater legal immunity. But Marie Harf, the State Department's deputy spokesperson, said U.S. officials had received no notification that such a change was planned.

Harf said U.S. officials continue to examine how the diplomat's case was handled, but have found no reason to suspect that rules were broken. The U.S. Marshals Service maintains that Khobragade was treated like any other suspect.

Nisar embroiled in yet another controversy
[Pak Daily Times] The opposition Pakistain People's Party (PPP) and Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) on Wednesday went for a boycott of the National Assembly session against what they called the "egoistic posture" of Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan who, they said, ridiculed the opposition benches.

Walking out from the session, both parties announced boycott of the House proceedings until Nisar withdrew his remark that an opposition party, an apparent reference to PTI, had created a "drama" on verification of voters' thumb impressions. Despite the demands of opposition leader Khurshid Shah and PTI's Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi, the interior minister did not withdraw his statement, although he explained that he had not referred to the conduct of these parties inside the House but outside, in pressers.

"The way the minister ridiculed the opposition vitiated the atmosphere of the House," Shah remarked and referred to conduct of Nisar in Senate last month when the opposition parties were holding their separate meeting outside the Parliament House. More embarrassment came for the government when proceedings resumed after Zuhar prayer break when quorum broke as opposition partied walked out from the House. The session was adjourned for a brief period to let the treasury bring back its members but the quorum could not be completed.

Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi was left with no option but to adjourn the session for Thursday. The tug of war between Interior Minister Nisar and opposition side deprived the members of the chance to speak on law and order situation that was on the order of the day under a motion moved by the government last week. The tension was triggered when opposition leader Shah sought an explanation from the government over what he said was handing over of NADRA to the Election Commission of Pakistain, and statement of the minister that magnetic ink was not used in 60,000 to 70,000 votes in different constituencies, etc.

Thai protesters say they will rally to hound PM from office
[Pak Daily Times] Anti-government demonstrators in Thailand said they will step up their protests in an attempt to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office and push through electoral reforms before a general election is held.

The number of protesters camped on the street in the capital has dwindled to about 2,000 over the past week but their leader, former deputy premier Suthep Thaugsuban, called for marches in central Bangkok on Thursday and Friday, followed by a big rally on Sunday.

"We will chase Yingluck out this Sunday after she made it clear she will not step down as caretaker prime minister," he said late on Tuesday.

Suthep massed 160,000 protesters around Yingluck's office on December 9, when she called a snap election for Feb. 2 to try to defuse the crisis. Yingluck remains caretaker prime minister.

US Army to RIF 4000 captains and majors.
[WashTimes] The Reduction in Force (RIF) is back. I can still vividly recall highly decorated Captains and veterans of Vietnam, attending the US Army Infantry Advanced Course at Fort Benning (some still attending to war wounds), getting their RIF notices in the early 1970's. A thoroughly disgusting event, I assure you.

If the one thing that fundamentally justifies a nation state, which is national defense, can be cut, why not every other department and agency? /rhet question

#11  Yeah, my OPO officer told me that if I made the permanent captain list and the Majors list, I was bullet proof. I graduated from the Armor Advanced course as an honor graduate and made the Major's list as a 2%er and got my notice while I was on leave in Spain. Considering what I did and seeing who they kept, I was pissed for years.

I wonder if this is like those political purges that Trotski and company did of the Russian Army Officer Corps to weed out the strong and only keep those who were blindly obedient to the Bolsheviks...me thinks this is all part of the master plan to declare martial law and suspend the next election.
