Mother of al-Shabab's Thomas Evans says 'world has fallen apart'
[BBC] The mother of a British man killed while fighting for Islamist Lion of Islam group al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
in Kenya has told the BBC her "whole world has fallen apart".

Sally Evans, from Buckinghamshire, said a journalist had phoned to tell them Moslem convert Thomas, 25, had died.

Her other son Michael said that when he looked on Twitter, the first thing he found was a picture of Thomas's body.

"We remember him as being my brother, your son," he told the BBC. "But to everyone else he's just a terrorist."
We're not related to him, Mr. Evans, so we see him for what he chose to do after he was that cute little kid.
Kenyan officials have confirmed that Thomas Evans was killed on Sunday when al-Shaboobs attacked a military base in the north of the country.
Rudaw adds:
Members of the family of a teenage British boy who reportedly killed himself in a suicide kaboom in Iraq say they are devastated by his death.

The statement from the family of 17-year-old Talha Asmal was released by police at the family's request.

"Talha comes from a close-knit, hardworking, peace-loving and law-abiding British Moslem family," the statement read. "The entire family unreservedly condemns and abhors all acts of violence."

They said his naive nature was exploited by unidentified people. The family said the Islamic State

group commanders who ordered him to conduct a suicide kaboom were "too cowardly to do their own 'dirty' work."
That doesn't sound like a "Please don't hurt us!", but more like "FU, you evil people who we reject."

Africa Subsaharan
South Africa High Court Says Allowing Bashir to Leave Violated Constitution
[NYTIMES] Shielded by the authorities, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan flew out of South Africa on Monday morning aboard his presidential jet, just hours before a South African court ruled that the government was legally required to arrest him.
Yeah, yeah. I don't like him, either, but you don't "arrest" a head of state without a declaration of war. If then.
Mr. Bashir's plane left a military airport near Pretoria, the capital, unhindered by the authorities who had already been ordered over the weekend by South Africa's High Court to prevent him from departing.

Though South Africa is a member of the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
, its government defied the longstanding arrest warrant for Mr. Bashir, who once again eluded international prosecutors seeking to try him on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide related to the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.

His departure dealt a serious blow to the international court's six-year campaign to bring him to justice. Mr. Bashir's plane took off just as South Africa's High Court was holding a hearing on whether the government was required to comply with the international court, which is based in The Hague.

Ban calls for immediate Ramadan truce in Yemen
[DAWN] UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...

"I hope this week starts the beginning of the end of the fighting," Ban said.

"Ramadan begins in two days," he said, stressing that the holy Moslem month should be a period for "harmony, peace and reconciliation".

"I have emphasised the importance of another humanitarian pause for two weeks," Ban said.

Dewsbury 'in shock over UK's youngest suicide bomber'
[BBC] Community leaders in the home town of a teenager reportedly involved in an Iraq suicide kaboom linked to Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. have spoken of their shock.

Talha Asmal's family say he was groomed online, and Downing Street described the case as "deeply concerning".

But a pupil at Asmal's school told the BBC he believed the sixth former had been persuaded to join IS by someone in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Asmal, 17, travelled to Syria in March with a convicted terrorist's brother.

Hassan Munshi, who is also 17 and from the same town, is still in Syria.

His brother was detained for two years in 2008 after being convicted of making a record of information likely to be used for terrorist purposes.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, a friend of the Asmal family said he believed the teenager must have come under "some kind of peer pressure".

Zubair Patel said the idea that a teenager would "go out and cross borders and go into another country and do whatever" solely because of online grooming "doesn't fit".

Iqbal Bhana, a Home Office adviser on hate crimes, said if "we found out there was someone planting these kind of ideas into the minds of young people, converting them... we would want to confront and challenge them".

Order against Save the Children suspended
[DAWN] Although the Ministry of Interior has "held in abeyance" its letter ordering the international non-government organisation (INGO) Save the Children (StC) to close down its operations, confusion still prevails over whether the organization will be allowed to resume its operations.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
while welcoming the ministry's decision to reconsider their stance towards StC, the organization itself says it will not resume operations until the situation becomes clear, adding that its 1,200 regular employees as well as the 600 daily wagers will remain on standby until further notice.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, the official spokesperson for the government, however, seemed unaware of the situation.

"I can only speak on the matter after being briefed by the interior ministry," the minister said when asked to comment on the change in StC's status.

After the government introduced new regulations for the INGOs' registration in November 2013, as many as 150 INGOs had applied for registration, of which 19 were registered and five were refused registration. Officials said the rest had obtained interim permission as a number of clearance certificates that were required for INGO registration were still missing from their applications.

Pakistan's arms not for decoration, Khawaja Asif tells India
[DAWN] Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Monday said if forced into war by India, Pakistain will respond in a befitting manner, adding that "our arms are not meant for decoration."
Surely I'm not the only person who's noticed that Islam = Truculence?
"If need be, we will use them [arms] against India," said Asif.
Or perhaps it's Truculence Leads to Islam? That would explain the number of jailhouse and other loser conversions.
Speaking at a book-launch ceremony in Islamabad, the defence minister severely criticised a recent series of hostile statements from Indian politicians.
Nawaz is in power. It must be time for another Pak-Indian war.
"By issuing provocative statements, Indian politicians want to distract Pakistain's attention from the war on terror," he said, adding that India had been "promoting terrorism in Pakistain."
They're just itching to nuke somebody, probably Delhi.
The defence minister said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
had placed the recent "threatening statements" from India before United Nations

Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon

Iraq
Hashd al-Shaabi claim to have 100,000 fighters
Goody. One hundred thousand semi-trained men shooting off their guns in sudden release of emotions.
[Rudaw] The Shiite militia movement known as Hashd al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization Units, now claims to have signed up 100,000 volunteers in Iraq's ongoing war against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, announced Moein al-Kazemi, a member of the group's leadership committee.
That's nothin'. Saddam had six million "volunteers."
"Volunteers who joined the group are mostly students and workers. They followed the Shiite leader's public call to fight ISIS and they joined," he said.

According to Kazemi, Iraqi police and Hashd al-Shaabi commanders are currently training the new arrivals prior to sending them to the front line.

The Hashd al-Shaabi rose up last year after a call from Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the highest Shiite holy man in Iraq, when ISIS fighters overran much of the country's western territory.

The militias, some of which have known ties to Iran, took the lead in the liberation of Tikrit earlier this year amid subsequent allegations the fighters marginalized Sunni residents of the area.

Peshmarga volunteers flock for recruitment, but most turned down
[Rudaw] Only 68 new recruits made the cut out of hundreds who turned up to volunteer on the first day of a recruitment drive for two newly-formed Peshmarga brigades in Kurdistan.

Peshmerga officials said young volunteers had flocked to recruitment centers in major Kurdish cities as a month-long enlistment process started in earnest on Sunday.

"We need motivated young people with proper education who can handle the sophisticated weaponry which the ministry will provide after completing the training programs," Deputy Peshmarga Minister Anwar Haji Usman told Rudaw.

According to Usman, the new recruits will be part of the special program that the US military has set up in support of Kurdish forces against the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS) group.

"If the volunteers lack in education or physical abilities, they won't be able to take full advantage of the training sessions," Usman said. He added that only 68 applicants had passed the ministry's requirements on the first day of recruitment in Erbil.

Officials said those turned away were lacking "sufficient skills or education."

But some of those turned down did not agree with the criteria for recruitment.

"It's unreasonable," said Rizgar Aziz, who did not make the cut. "We are not here to be employed for a higher position, we want to go to the frontlines of war," he said, expressing his disappointment.
Rashid Jixsi, 18, who has some fighting experience, did not understand why he was turned down.

"I have already been a Peshmerga, regardless of what they say," Jixsi told Rudaw outside the recruitment center in Erbil.

Volunteers must be between 18 and 30 years of age, with at least a high school diploma.

The Peshmerga ministry has 14 different brigades, each with 3,200 Peshmarga soldiers.

Since the war started in August last year, the US and some EU member states have pledged military support for the Peshmerga and set up training camps inside the Kurdistan Region.

Official: displaced families in Kirkuk ready to return home to Tikrit
[Rudaw] At least 50 displaced families from Tikrit now living in Kirkuk are ready to return to their homes because the necessary steps for their repatriation have been completed, an Iraqi official said on Monday.

Rashid Bayati, a member of the Salahaddin provincial council, told Rudaw that Iraqi officials have prepared facilities to help Tikrit residents in Samara and Kirkuk who want to return to their homes.

"Transportation facilities are set ready to pick up 200 displaced families in Samara and 50 others in Kirkuk and help them come back to the city of Tikrit," in Salahaddin, Bayati said.

He added that the security situation around Tikrit is reported to be stable, especially in areas such as Alam and Fatha. The town of Baiji and its oil refineries are reportedly "more or less stable," Bayati said.

The liberation of Tikrit by Iraqi forces in mid-April came at a heavy price, both in loss of life and in the complete devastation the Death Eaters left after their defeat.

Iran power struggle could derail nuclear deal
[Telegraph] Diplomats issue warning amid concerns over health of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who would need to ratify any deal

There are mounting fears that a deepening power struggle in Tehran over the succession for the powerful position of Supreme Leader could derail attempts to negotiate a deal over Iran's nuclear programme.

Western diplomats involved in the negotiations believe the increasingly frail health of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the regime's current Supreme Leader, has prompted a fierce power struggle between rival contenders as they jostle for the succession.

Concerns have grown over the health of Mr Khamenei, the country's leading hardliner, after the 75-year-old underwent a series of operation for prostate cancer. Recent reports in the Iranian media have suggested that his condition is terminal, and that the man who had dominated Iranian politics since the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolution's founding father, in 1989 only has months to live.

In March Ayatollah Mohammed Yazdi, 84, a hardline ally of Mr Khamenei, was elected head of the Assembly of Experts, the religious body responsible for choosing the country's new Supreme Leader when the position falls vacant.

Western diplomats say that one of Mr Khamenei's protégés, Sadeq Larijani, the head of Iran's judicial system and a noted hardliner, is positioning himself to be appointed the new Supreme Leader when the Assembly of Experts comes to make its decision.

Mr Larijani, 54, is the brother of Ali Larijani, Iran's former chief nuclear negotiator who is now chairman of the Majlis, the Iranian parliament. He is now reported to be conducting a purge against more moderate ayatollahs who might put their names forward to become the country's new Supreme Leader.

For example, Mr Larijani has recently launched a judicial inquiry into allegations of corruption made against the moderate ayatollah, Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, who is a leading ally of Iran's former moderate president, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani
... the fourth President of Iran. He was a member of the Assembly of Experts until he was eased out in 2011 He continues, for the moment, as Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council. In 2005 he ran for a third term as president, ultimately losing to rival Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was in Khamenei's graces back then. In 1980 Rafsanjani survived an assassination attempt, during which he was seriously injured. He has been described as a centrist and a pragmatic conservative without all that much reason. He is currently being eased out of any position of actual influence or power and may be dead by the end of 2012...
By launching the inquiry, diplomats believe Mr Larijani has effectively ended Mr Shahroudi's chances of standing for election.

The renewed bout of political in-fighting in Tehran is causing particular concern for Western diplomats involved in negotiations to resolve the stand-off over Iran's nuclear

June 30 has been set as the date for a final agreement to be reached, whereby Iran agrees to scale down the elements of its programme that could be used to develop nuclear weapons in return for the easing of crippling economic sanctions.

After years of negotiations, U.S. officials believe a deal is within reach that for a decade would keep Iran at least a year from being able to build a nuclear weapon.

But any final agreement negotiated between Iran and representatives of the so-called P5+1 -- the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Iran -- needs to be ratified by the Supreme Leader.

In the past attempts to achieve a breakthrough in the long-running dispute have failed because Mr Khamenei and other hardliners in Iran's Revolutionary Guards have refused to accept any deal negotiated with the U.S..

Now Western negotiators fear the current round of negotiations could suffer a similar fate as a result of the political in-fighting taking place in Tehran.

"With so many people jockeying for position, the hardliners will be tempted to prove their revolutionary credentials by vetoing any deal with the U.S.," explained a senior Western diplomat.

"The fear now is that this could jeopardise any progress we make in resolving the issue and lifting the sanctions."

#2  Not really. The maneuvering's been going on for months. Sadeq Larijani was considered one of the dark horses. He's a jurist (a requirement in the Iranian constitution) but has no real legal experience. He's also relatively young for a cleric in his position. However, he's got the support of the intelligence agencies and enjoys close ties with the military.

In short, he's a ruthless bastard who'd probably make Khomeini look like a liberal.

Iran official to discuss Yemen at Islamic talks in Saudi Arabia
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Iran's deputy foreign minister for Middle East affairs will discuss Yemen's conflict at a meeting of a pan-Islamic body in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the Iranian Mehr news agency reported on Monday.

Hossein Amir Abdollahian will join other officials from the Islamic world at a one-day extraordinary meeting in Jeddah of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Tuesday called to discuss Yemen's war, Mehr reported.

In Geneva, peace talks are due to open later on Monday between the combatants in Yemen's almost three-month-old conflict.

#1  BUT-T-T NOT the concept of "KURDISTAN" ...???

* WAFF > FORMER SAUDI CONSULTANT [to KSA Prince Bandar Al-Sultan] REVEALS A PLAN TO ESTABLISH A "GREATER KURDISTAN", on Territory = Homeland composed from 1/3 equal shares taken from the States of TURKEY, IRAN, + IRAQ.

Anwar Eshki.

VERSUS

* FARS NEWS AGENCY [FNA = Iran] SAUDI JOURNALIST CALLS FOR [joint KSA-Israeli] ATTACK ON IRAN, WANTS INAUGURATION OF ISRAELI EMBASSY [vee Iranian Embassy] IN RIYADH.

Journo Dahham al-Enazi.

* DEFENCE.PK/FORUMS > TURKMEN COMMANDER WARNS OF [Post-ISIS? = anti-ISIS, anti-YPG/PYD] BIGGER WAR IN SYRIA.

IOW, IIUC as things currently stand, the KURDS are perceived locally or regionally as only getting stronger, not weaker or "status quo" ala the anti-ISIS fight in Iraq + Syria???
