His arrest was in relation to what has become known as the Al-Qadir Trust case
Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested Tuesday as he appeared in a court in the country's capital, Islamabad, to face charges in multiple graft cases.
It is understood that his arrest was in relation to the accusation that he, his wife and other associates made a financial settlement between his ruling government and a property tycoon that caused a loss of £190 billion to the treasury.
His arrest follows months of political crisis and comes hours after the powerful military rebuked the former international cricketer for alleging a senior officer had been involved in a plot to kill him, which saw an assassination attempt last year.
More than 100 cases - including corruption and terrorism - have been registered against Khan since he was ousted from power in April last year. In most of the cases, Khan faces being barred from holding public office if convicted.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told reporters that Khan had been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in relation to the Al-Qadir Trust case, after he did not appear 'despite notices'.
He said the charges against Khan were that he and his wife had received land worth up to 7 billion rupees (£19.5billion) from a land developer that had been charged with money laundering by British authorities.
He added that British authorities had returned 190 million pounds to Pakistan in connection with money laundering, which Khan then returned to the land developer instead of keeping it in the national exchequer.
Sanaullah said Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi then received the land, as well as 5 billion rupees from Bahria Town (an Islamabad-based real estate company) for 'providing protection' to the real estate firm.
The couple, along with their close aides Zulfiqar Bukhari and Babar Awan, were involved in the Al-Qadir University Project Trust, which is currently building the Al-Qadir University in Sohawa, Pakistan near Islamabad.
According to reports in the country, the trust was formed by Khan, Bushra Bibi, Bukhari, and Awan with the intention of importing quality education into the region.
It is understood that the funds and land were given to the couple through the Al-Qadir Trust, which had only two trustees: Khan and his wife.
Khan had denied wrongdoing.
The NAB issued Khan's arrest warrant on May 1, according to an order seen by Reuters news agency, which read: 'Khan is accused of commission of the offence of corruption and corrupt practices.'
Khan will be brought before an anti-graft court on Wednesday, GEO TV said.
However, Khan's arrest has sparked angry protests across the country.

The Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) had won seven UCs while Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam ...a Pak religious party. It is usually part of the govt, never part of the solution... -Fazl (JUI-F) got three UCs followed by Tehrik Labbaik Pakistain that managed to win one UC in the Jan 15 LG elections. One independent candidate also bagged a UC.
However, if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well... results of six UCs are still withheld due to different reasons.
[Shafaq News] The administration of Erbil International Airport in the Kurdistan Region announced on Monday the prohibition of a Ottoman Turkish opposition deputy from entering Iraqi territory, following a request from the federal government in Baghdad.
In a statement released in the late hours of the night and obtained by Shafaq News Agency, the administration of Erbil International Airport conveyed that, pursuant to the request of the federal security apparatus, a travel ban was imposed on an individual named Hasan Özgunes, bearing a Ottoman Turkish passport, at all Iraqi airports and border crossings, including those in the Kurdistan Region.
The statement from Erbil Airport's administration further elucidated, "Upon his arrival at Erbil Airport, he was treated with utmost respect and returned to his country," emphasizing that "this decision is not related to the Kurdistan Regional Government."

[IsraelTimes] Report says national government and sports federation are working to convince Bali’s governor to reconsider boycott of Israelis, but he won’t budge.
Senior Indonesian officials are reportedly concerned their country could be stripped of hosting the World Beach Games at Bali this summer over the local governor’s refusal to let Israeli athletes compete.
According to a report in the Sunday Times of London, brass hats fear the Association of National Olympic Committees — which is organizing the tournament in August — could remove Indonesia as host if Bali Governor Wayan Koster will not end his boycott.
Koster and Ganjar Pranowo, who heads the nearby province of Central Java and is a candidate in the 2024 presidential elections, advocated banning Israel from the Under-20 World Cup that was slated to be held in Indonesia later this month, whereupon FIFA pulled the tournament from there and relocated it to Argentina ...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita... Fearing a similar outcome, the British newspaper said Indonesia’s national government and sports federation were trying to negotiate with Koster to reconsider, but he will not budge.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine (PFLP) threatened an escalation in violence Monday after the terror group’s leader was sent to solitary confinement in an Israeli prison.

The terror group didn’t state a specific reason for why it believes the prison authorities moved Saadat, who is serving a 30-year sentence for his role in the 2001 liquidation of Israeli tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi, but appeared to link it to Israeli military operations in the West Bank amid a series of deadly Paleostinian terror attacks.
"You will not undermine our determination and will," al-Sultan added.
The PFLP said that two of its other members had been transferred from their cells: Ahed Abu Ghoulmeh, who was also convicted over Ze’evi’s killing, and Walid Muhammad Hanatsheh, who is accused of orchestrating a bombing attack outside a West Bank settlement in 2019 that killed Israeli teenager Rina Shnerb.
The move came the same day the Shin Bet announced it arrested six members of a PFLP terror cell accused of attempting to carry out a bombing attack on a bus in March and planning further attacks in the West Bank. According to the Shin Bet, the attempted attack revealed a widespread PFLP terror network in the West Bank that is directed by PFLP officials, including members nabbed Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! in Israel.
It also came after Saadat recently granted an unauthorized interview to an Algerian newspaper, in which he warned of a potential "third intifada," or uprising, and said there had been no marked change in conditions for Paleostinian security prisoners since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government took power in late December.
