DOJ appeals Florida judge's orders to BLOCK Joe Biden's post-Title 42 plans for dealing with influx of migrants at the southern border - as doctor warns the crisis is creating a 'public health emergency' due to a lack of screening
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • The White House says that the DOJ will appeal a Florida judge's ruling on Biden's post-Title 42 plans

  • Biden's administration planned to release migrants from holding centers when they reached capacity with a 60-notice to appear before an immigration officer

  • The judge's ruling came after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis filed a lawsuit regarding the plan, arguing that a similar plan was already struck down

Afghanistan
Afghanistan: Taliban opens 299 madrassas in Takhar in under two years
As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined.
[AMUtv] Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
has established at least 299 religious schools, or madrassas, in the north-eastern province of Takhar in less than two years after it took power in Afghanistan, a move that comes amid the ongoing closure of secondary schools for girls.

Confirming the figures, the Taliban’s hajj and religious affairs department in Takhar said that over 7,400 children and teenagers are enrolled in the madrassas.

Instructors at the religious schools are all Taliban, according to those aware of the matter.

The department said that among these madrassas, some have been established especially for girls. However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
no specific numbers were released on how many of these are for girls.

Figures by sources aware of the matter show that Taliban has allocated nearly 100,000 teaching posts for religious schools in Takhar.

The department of hajj and religious affairs said that the women’s madrassas are run by men. A number of girls who attend these madrassas confirmed this and said some teachers and "all administrative officials" are men.

"Taliban is dedicated to its decision to make madrassas in cities and districts and provinces," said university lecturer Humaira Qaderi. "If this happens, it will lead society towards a situation where all doors to education and innovation will be closed and Afghanistan will be changed into another Quetta which is full of madrassas and is training jihadists and terrorists."

Takhar residents said that the closure of secondary schools for girls and establishing madrassas on the other side is a "clear indication of gender discrimination."

"Besides working for Islamic culture and establishing religious schools, it is good to pay attention to the main matter which is keeping girls and boys’ schools open so that the future generation becomes educated," a Takhar resident, Ahmad, said.

Freshta, a Takhar resident and an 11th-year student, said the international community should put pressure on the Taliban to reopen their schools so that they can continue following their dreams.

"We had dreams that were buried. We miss our school, our classes, our classmates. Our plan as the young generation was to become a doctor or engineer but that dream was buried," she said.

Figures by the previous government show that at least 5,000 religious schools were registered by the ministry of education in 2021.

Sources said that Taliban has turned a recreational area in Taloqan, the center of Takhar, and a number of other public buildings into religious schools.

Post-withdrawal, no “over-the-horizon” strikes in Afghanistan
We here at Rantburg were not the only ones concerned about afterward.
[MilitaryTimes] As the U.S. scrambled to get the last of its troops out of Afghanistan in late summer 2021, the Pentagon fielded endless questions about how it could prevent the country from becoming the terrorist training ground it had been before 9/11.

Sales believes the "robust over-the-horizon" talk during summer 2021 was essentially lip service meant to ease the minds of the American public, as they watched 20 years of U.S. investment in Afghan security crumble on their television screens.
Biden administration officials touted robust "over-the-horizon" capabilities to both gather intelligence and strike terrorist groups to keep them in check. But some two years after the Biden administration announced the drawdown, the U.S. military hasn’t struck a single target in Afghanistan, and U.S. military leaders now concede they lack sufficient resources to do so.

In August 2021, then Pentagon front man John Kirby insisted the administration would "maintain robust over-the-horizon counter-terrorism capability, the kinds of capabilities that you’ve seen us use in just the last 24-36 hours," as the U.S. prepared to evacuate the last of its troops. "We still have that capability. We will use that capability," an assertion Kirby repeated again this year, as Biden National Security Council front man, and also repeated to Military Times by multiple military officials.

Arabia
Hadhramaut Province Leader accuses America of using investments as cover for occupation takeover
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The governor of the government loyal to Saudi-led coalition in Hadhramaut province, Mabkhout bin Madhi, revealed on Saturday a dangerous American plan in the oil-rich province, eastern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
This comes a few days after intensive meetings with military leaders from the US Navy.

During a television interview with the UAE-affiliated "Al-Ghad al-Mashreq" channel, bin Madhi hinted that the plan contradicts Yemeni illusory sovereignty, stating that "the Americans are seeking to take over the province under the cover of investments."

Hadhramaut is one of the Yemeni provinces in the south and east in which the US forces have fixed bases and deploy mobile military units under the pretext of "fighting terrorism."

Turkey hosts some four million Syrian refugees and Ankara is under pressure to send them home amid growing domestic economic woes and rising anti-refugee sentiment. Refugees are one of the main issues in Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections that will take place on Sunday.

Ankara is now looking to reconcile with its neighbour. Cavusoglu on Saturday called for "cooperation with the Assad regime," saying that "this is essential to build lasting stability in Syria."

"A roadmap was agreed upon. It was decided to form a working group. Friends will discuss what steps will be taken in the fight against terrorism, how the political process will work, and what steps will be taken in the upcoming period," Cavusoglu said.

Turkey justifies its military presence in Syria on the basis of its desire to repatriate refugees and it claims to be fighting Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a US-backed force that Ankara considers a Syrian front for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The PKK is a Kurdish group waging an armed insurgency against the Ottoman Turkish state in its fight for greater Kurdish political and cultural rights. Alongside its alleged proxies it is designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara.

Iraq
Former official reveals Saddam's covert support to foreign leaders
Shafaq News / In an interview with Middle Eastern newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Salem al-Jumaili, the former head of the America division in the intelligence apparatus of Iraq's Ba'ath Party, disclosed that Saddam Hussein had provided financial backing to the electoral campaigns of both French politician Jacques Chirac and late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, aiding their victories.

al-Jumaili further divulged how Hussein's regime lent both monetary and military assistance to Lebanese General Michel Aoun during the "War of Liberation" aimed at expelling the Syrian army from Lebanon. He stated, "Saddam decided to punish the late President Hafez Al-Assad for halting the Iraqi oil pipeline that traversed Syria to Baniyas during the Iraq-Iran war, so he ordered support for Aoun, providing him with armored vehicles, ammunition, and $11 million."

The former intelligence officer also spoke of the Iraqi support extended to opponents of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's rule, after it was revealed that Gaddafi had supplied Iran with Scud missiles used to bombard Baghdad amid the Iraq-Iran war.

Additionally, al-Jumaili recounted a failed assassination attempt on Danielle Mitterrand, the wife of late French President François Mitterrand. She had been instrumental in publicizing the Halabja incident and Iraq's use of chemical weapons, prompting a decision to terminate her influence. In July 1992, during a visit to Sulaymaniyah province and while en route to the Halabja Martyrs' Monument, an explosive device was planted in her path, but she miraculously survived.

Iraqi lawmaker rebuts allegations by Shiite militiaman on ISIS ties
[Shafaq News] Sajjad Salem, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Wasit governorate, on Saturday vehemently refuted allegations of his affiliation with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), following incendiary comments made by a commander of a Shiite paramilitary faction.

Those remarks were made by Abu Turab al-Tamimi, a commander in a state-sanctioned umbrella of mainly Shiite paramilitary groups, who claimed that Salem was an ISIS sympathizer.

In a statement he released earlier today, Salem denounced al-Tamimi's remarks and called for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces to hold the militia leader accountable.

"We demand that the General Commander of the Armed Forces address the so-called 'Abu Turab al-Tamimi,' who purports to belong to an Iraqi security apparatus while egregiously overstepping his 'duties' by threatening an elected Iraqi politician, who represents the will of the people," he said.

Salem said that the accusations were a response to his vocal criticisms of sectarian policies, the militarization of society, and corruption in the handling of public funds, stressing that addressing these pressing issues falls under the constitutionally protected rights and responsibilities of MPs.

Abu Turab al-Tamimi, a high-ranking member of the Badr Organization affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), had provocatively claimed that, without the PMF, Salem would have been an ISIS governor in Wasit.

"MP Sajjad Salem, show respect [to the PMF], and you will be respected," al-Tamimi tweeted, "you regard the PMF as outside the state's framework and depict it as a politically sectarian entity. With your narrow mindset and limited understanding, you are incapable of grasping the true nature of the PMF and its crucial role in fortifying Iraq's protection and security."

Al-Tamimi accused Salem and his ilk of being susceptible to foreign agendas and fostering societal disintegration during the administration of Iraq's former Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

He praised the PMF's leadership for restoring Iraq's dignity and achieving victory against ISIS, asserting that the PMF serves as the bulwark of the Iraqi system and cannot be exploited to safeguard corrupt politicians or factions.

Syria extends humanitarian aid access via two border crossings
“You want ‘em, Erdy, you feed ‘em.”
[Dawn] Syria has extended for three months humanitarian aid access into quake-stricken rebel-held areas from Turkiye via two border crossings, a United Nations

representative said on Saturday.

The Syrian foreign minister conveyed the decision "to allow the UN to continue using the Al Ra’ee and Bab al-Salam crossings for an additional three months," Eri Kaneko, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said in a statement. There was no immediate comment from Damascus.

Syrians affected by the Feb 6 earthquake that killed more than 55,000 people in Syria and Turkiye have been relying on the two border crossings for vital humanitarian deliveries.

Following international pressure, Damascus agreed to let the UN use the Bab al-Salama and al-Rai crossings, operated by Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels, to bring in food and medical supplies for three months.

The permission had been set to expire May 13, so Syria’s decision was welcome news for those affected as well as for human rights

organizations, which had urged the UN to continue deliveries even absent re-authorisation from Damascus.

Iran says monitoring Persian Gulf as US plans to bolster presence
[Rudaw] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
says it is closely monitoring the Persian Gulf as the United States announces a plan to increase its maritime presence in the region.

"The movement of enemy vessels in the Persian Gulf is always under the surveillance of the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] Navy," Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, said on Friday, Fars news reported.

He noted that Iranian forces have made advancements in military technology and said, "With such equipment and capable forces, the preparedness level of the armed forces of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran is increasing day by day."

The US Navy on Friday announced it was bolstering its presence in the Persian Gulf, increasing the rotation of ships and aircraft patrolling the vital naval corridor the Strait of Hormuz to deter Iran, which, according to the Navy, has harassed or attacked 15 internationally flagged ships in the past two years.

"Iran’s unwarranted, irresponsible and unlawful seizure and harassment of merchant vessels must stop," said Vice Admiral Brad Cooper who commands the US fleet in the Persian Gulf.

"US 5th Fleet and our partners are committed to protecting navigational rights in these critical waters," he added.

Iran seized two oil tankers in the space of a week. On April 27, the Marshall Island tanker Advantage Sweet was seized after colliding with an Iranian boat, according to state media. And on May 3, the Panama-flagged ship Niovi was seized while traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. About a fifth of global oil supplies pass through the strait daily.

The US "will not allow foreign or regional powers to jeopardize freedom of navigation through the Middle East waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz," National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby told news hounds on Friday.

Iran has repeatedly demanded the US to withdraw its forces from the region.

The two have had many tense interactions in the Persian Gulf over the years. Tensions between them in 2019 sparked concerns that the strait could be blocked, creating havoc for global oil markets.
