Oh, and they should eliminate the shadow of the camera and tri-pod from that one shot.

Tropical Storm Hanna Poised to Sweep U.S. Coast
SAINT-MARC, Haiti — Tropical Storm Hanna drenched flood-plagued Haiti on Wednesday, adding to the miseries of a country that has lost more than 100 lives to mudslides and flooding since mid-August.

The storm is still expected to change course, sweep across the Bahamas and then start climbing along the U.S. coastline by the weekend, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami — with some chance it could bring tropical storm force winds to New York City.

Haitian authorities on Wednesday reported two more deaths caused by Hanna, raising the toll to 23.

Floodwaters swamped a hospital in the Les Cayes area, forcing nurses to move patients to higher floors. At least 5,000 people in Les Cayes remained in shelters, said Jean-Renand Valiere, a coordinator for the civil protection department.

#1  but will it affect the NASCAR race at Richmond saturday night? That's the important question
Posted by: Frank G || 09/04/2008 13:28 Comments || Top||

#2  According to RIR's website, not so far, Frank. They're watching it.

The Richmond area so far is forecast for rain but not much wind. And we can use the rain.

If they're washed out Saturday night, they can still run the race on Sunday.

#3  As long as Jeffy Gordon finishes out of the top 12 in Chase standings you can run the race anytime; I have a case of beer riding on that.

#4  I don't pay any attention, Ret., since luckily the racetrack is on the other side of town, but I wish him good luck for your sake.

I'm just happy that NASCAR brings all that lovely money into the local economy. And that the traffic jams don't affect me. ;-p

#5  I'm keeping an eye on Hanna's track. If she stays east, we should be ok. If she crosses 95, it's gonna get nasty here. We'll really get to see if they've fixed the drainage in the Bottom.

#6  Barb, my little Brother works @ the VA hospital, has tix for the pits for both NASCAR races. Jealous? yeah, since they are free to him (family member of a patient gives them to the VA staff, good on him, for what they do for his Brother)

#7  ...Man, I'm not sure what the heck this thing is gonna do - I'm RIGHT on the western edge of the track as it comes through SC. I rode out one TS on the coast two years ago so I think we'll do okay.

#8  "We'll really get to see if they've fixed the drainage in the Bottom."

Steve, what's weird is the forecasts I've seen so far aren't predicting that much rain, which is weird. Maybe the 11 o'clock news (just now starting) will give different information. They are predicting 35 mpg winds on Saturday, which is more along the lines of what I would expect.

Guess they'll be running the race on Sunday. I'm not too sure I'd like to be sitting on one of those motor homes at the track on Saturday when the winds pick up - and the rain's probably going to cut down on the tailgating and barbequeing.

I'll test my generator tomorrow morning (never can tell what will happen with the electricity in a storm), take down the hanging baskets on the deck, and tank up the car (which I do on Fridays anyway). Don't see the need for much more prep than that, since I keep emergency supplies on hand at all times.

#9  OK, Jim Duncan just said expect at least 2 inches of rain here Saturday morning (plus of course whatever falls Friday night).

Not in Gaston territory, of course, but maybe a small drainage test....

Mauritania: Junta-appointed prime minister names new Cabinet
(SomaliNet) Nearly a month after a coup in the Islamic nation, Mauritania's junta-appointed prime minister has named a new Cabinet.

Media reports said all those named to the 28 posts come from political parties that supported the August 6 coup. Four ministers - of defence, economy, finance and justice - remain in positions held before the military deposed the country's first freely elected president.

In a statement, the junta said that Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf made the appointments late on Sunday.

A transitional government is supposed to lead the north-west African nation until elections are held. No date has been set for the poll.

Ousted President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi has been under house arrest since the takeover. Former Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waqef is also being detained by the junta.

The Cabinet includes 23 ministerial positions and five secretaries of state.

Congo army leaves national park, rebels stay
More than 1,000 soldiers have left a national park that has been on the front lines of fighting in eastern Congo in a move the park director said was intended to preserve an environment that is home to endangered gorillas, hippos and active volcanoes.

However, rebels still occupy a sector of the reserve that is home to some of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas, officials said Wednesday.

The decision to move out all government troops and their families _ about 6,000 people in all _ came after negotiations between Virunga National Park Director Emmanuel de Merode and Gen. Vainqueur Mayala, the army's commanding officer, Merode said in a statement.

The move aims to "reduce human presence in the area and preserve the flora and fauna of Africa's oldest national park," de Merode said.

Only about 700 mountain gorillas remain in the world, an estimated 380 of them in a range of volcanoes straddling Congo's borders with Uganda and Rwanda. Only 200 are believed to live on the Congo side of the border, about 72 of which have been habituated to contact with people. Ten of them were killed last year.

The reserve is located in a lawless swath of Congo adjacent to neighboring Rwanda and Uganda that the government has struggled to control for years.

Congolese and Rwandan rebels and militia have hidden in the park's dense forests for more than a decade and used parts of it as bases to launch attacks. Last week, the army and rebels led by Laurent Nkunda exchanged machine-gun and mortar fire outside the reserve in one of the fiercest clashes in the region this year.

Russia Explains Its Plan Of Conquest
Russia has proclaimed five strategic operating principles for how it will operate in the future. First, Russia observes international law. Second, it rejects U.S. dominance of world affairs in what it calls a unipolar world. Next, it seeks friendly relations with other nations. Fourth, it will defend Russian citizens and business interests abroad. And fifth, it claims its own sphere of influence in the world.

With respect to Mongolia, he said that pat of Taiwan may feel so, bc Mongolia was part of China when what now Taiwanese were in power in the mainland. As you understand, such feelings by some taiwanese, and not mainland chinese make the conquest even less likely.

Russia sends cash, builders to S. Ossetia
Russia has sent hundreds of workers to rebuild this shattered rebel capital just weeks after its military routed Georgian forces here, and has promised cash payments for every South Ossetian _ the latest in efforts to shore up its alliance with the breakaway Georgian province.

Russian builder Igor Semyonov is proud just to be a part of the substantial reconstruction effort his country is funding.

Semyonov stood in the center of what is now called Three Tank Square, where the scorched remains of Georgian tanks are surrounded by battle-scarred buildings including one with a tank turret sitting on its front steps.

"It will be more beautiful than ever," the he promised as he worked to reconstruct a shattered labor union headquarters.

Moscow is matching in South Ossetia what the U.S. and its allies are doing in Georgia, pouring in aid to support its ally along the new confrontation line that has grown up between Russia and the West.

Russian authorities have dispatched 500 construction workers to repair and rebuild scores of damaged or destroyed administrative buildings and schools, as well as the region's main hospital in Tskhinvali. It's a massive effort made possible by Russia's oil-fueled economic resurgence.

Turkey president to make historic Armenia visit
President Abdullah Gul on Saturday becomes the first Turkish head of state to visit Armenia and Ankara hopes his trip to attend a football match will heal old wounds over the massacre of Armenians by Turkish forces. Gul goes to Yerevan to watch a 2010 World Cup qualifying match with counterpart Serge Sarkissian at the latter's invitation, the Turkish presidency said Wednesday.

"A visit around this match can create a new climate of friendship in the region," said a statement by the Turkish presidency posted on its website. "It's with this in mind that the president has accepted (Sarkissian's) invitation."

"This match could lift the obstacles blocking the coming together of two people who share a common history and can create a new foundation" and we hope this visit means "an opportunity for a better mutual understanding," it said.

Gul's trip represents a key step towards ending almost a century of animosity over the massacre of Armenians under the erstwhile Turkish Ottoman empire. Turkey has refused to establish diplomatic relations with Armenia since it became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The key reason is Yerevan's campaign for the deaths of Armenian civilians in 1915-1917 to be classified as genocide. Armenia says up to 1.5 million people were killed in orchestrated massacres during World War I as the Ottoman Empire fell apart.

Turkey rejects the genocide label and argues that 300,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks died in civil strife as Armenians fought for independence in eastern Anatolia and sided with invading Russian troops. About 20 countries have recognized the events as genocide.

U.S. Pledges $1B in Aid for Georgia
WASHINGTON — President George W. Bush on Wednesday said the U.S. will send an extra $1 billion to Georgia to help the pro-Western former Soviet republic in the wake of Russia's invasion. "Georgia has a strong economic foundation and leaders with an impressive record of reform," Bush said in a statement. "Our additional economic assistance will help the people of Georgia recover from the assault on their country, and continue to build a prosperous and competitive economy."

Vice President Dick Cheney, due in Georgia on Thursday, planned to make the massive aid package a major highlight of his discussions with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Cheney, in Azerbaijan on Wednesday, is on a tour of three former Soviet republics that are wary of Russia's intentions in what Moscow likes to call its "near abroad" and what Cheney termed "the shadow of the Russian invasion of Georgia."

"The free world cannot allow the destiny of a small independent country to be determined by the aggression of a larger neighbor," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters at the State Department in a simultaneous announcement with Bush.

She mocked Russia for its recognition of the two separatist regions in Georgia that are at the heart of the conflict that broke out last month, and for its failure to garner international backing. Almost no one followed suit, I might note. It isn't really an impressive list to have Abkhazia and South Ossetia recognize each other," she said.

Also in tandem with Bush, the International Monetary Fund announced it has agreed to lend Georgia $750 million for economic recovery.

The administration is delaying an announcement on some sort of punishment of Russia for its actions against Georgia and its refusal thus far to comply with a French-brokered cease-fire. However, the decision to shower tiny Georgia with such substantial aid and have Cheney talk about it in Moscow's backyard will likely be seen by the Kremlin as highly provocative, if not a punitive measure in and of itself.

Cheney made a point in Azerbaijan of saying that Washington has "a deep and abiding interest" in the region's stability.

Bush said the money will meet humanitarian needs, such as helping to resettle families that were displaced. The U.S. already has provided $30 million in humanitarian relief since the conflict began.

The United States has sent two military ships bearing aid to Georgia, and the USS Mount Whitney — the flagship of the Navy's 6th Fleet — steamed through the Dardanelles early Wednesday and was expected to pass through the Bosporus later in the day.

The new funds are also aimed at helping impoverished Georgia, wedged between Russia and Turkey on the Black Sea, to rebuild infrastructure and boost an economy that has been growing but is nowhere near grown. Rice said that $570 million of the funds will be made available in the remaining months of the Bush administration. That leaves a sizable portion — $430 million — up to the budgeting discretion of a future Congress and the next White House occupant.

Georgia wants to rebuild and modernize its badly routed military. Though U.S. officials emphasized that none of the current package was for military aid, there was no effort to rule that out for the future. Russia has accused the United States of delivering arms on the U.S. warships that have docked in Georgian ports with humanitarian supplies.

Cypriot leaders begin peace talks
Talks on the reunification of Cyprus have begun between Demetris Christofias, the Greek Cypriot president, and Mehmet Ali Talat, the Turkish Cypriot leader. Both men are seen as pro-settlement moderates and after three decades of failed diplomacy there is considerable optimism that a deal may be reached.

Alexander Downer, the UN secretary-general's special envoy to Cyprus, said: "Today is an historic day for Cyprus."

Downer said "significant progress" had been made to build confidence and create a solid foundation for the negotiations, which mark the first intensive push for peace on the island since a failed UN plan in 2004. "There have been difficult moments over the past months and there will likely be further difficulties and challenges ahead.

"At the same time, the Cyprus problem is not insurmountable and the negotiations which begin today can and must have a successful outcome," he said.

What do community organizers achieve in Chicago, Ma?
An estimated 123 people were shot and killed over the summer. That's nearly double the number of soldiers killed in Iraq over the same time period.

In May, cbs2chicago.com began tracking city shootings and posting them on Google maps. Information compiled from our reporters, wire service reports and the Chicago Police Major Incidents log indicated that 123 people were shot and killed throughout the city between the start of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, and the end of Labor Day on Sept. 1.

According to the Defense Department, 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period.

In the same time period, an estimated 245 people were shot and wounded in the city.

The South Side's Englewood District, which includes the Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods on the city's South Side, fared the worst over the summer. A total of 14 people were shot dead there, and 48 were shot and wounded.

The next highest totals came in the Grand Crossing District, which includes the South Shore, Woodlawn, Park Manor and Grand Crossing neighborhoods on the South Side, 12 people were killed and 31 were injured.

Also hit severely by gun violence over the summer was the Ogden District – which includes the Near Southwest Side's Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods – where 10 people were killed and six were injured.

The South Chicago District on the Southeast Side saw nine people killed and 11 injured, almost all concentrated in the South Chicago and Avalon Park neighborhoods at the north end of the district.

The West Side's Austin District saw also saw nine people killed and 12 injured, while the Far South Side's Calumet District – including the Roseland, Fernwood and Pullman neighborhoods – saw eight killed and 20 injured.

Palin Speech Garners 37 Million Viewers
Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech Wednesday night of the Republican National Convention drew 37 million viewers, which is more than those who watched Democratic vice president Joe Biden or potential first lady Michelle Obama or even Hillary Clinton during the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

According to Nielsen ratings, Palin’s number was just 1.1 million viewers shy of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s record-breaking speech at the Democratic meeting Aug. 28, according to the most recent Nielsen Media Research ratings.

Day three of the convention, which featured not only Palin, but former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, received the highest viewership so far. Tuesday — the first “official” day of the convention since Monday’s events were canceled due to Hurricane Gustav — drew 21.5 million viewers.

Women viewers outnumbered men on Wednesday night, 19.5 million to 16.4 million, consistent with the pattern since last week. On day three of the Democratic convention, when Joe Biden accepted the nomination for vice president and Bill Clinton stirred the audience at Pepsi Center, 12 million adult women watched compared to 9.7 million adult men.

During day one of the Democratic convention, Michelle Obama garnered 22 million total viewers, while Sen. Hillary Clinton got 26 million viewers the next night, and on day three, Biden had 24 million viewers.

Meanwhile, FOX News’ coverage of Tuesday’s speeches surpassed all others, broadcast or cable, according to Nielsen, with 6.2 million viewers in the 10 p.m. ET hour. That was more than NBC, which averaged 4.5 million viewers; CNN, which averaged 3.2 million viewers; ABC with 3.1 million viewers; CBS with 2.9 million and MSNBC with 1.6 million viewers for its 10 p.m. coverage on Tuesday.

Overall RNC viewership Tuesday night — 21.5 million — was about 4 million fewer than watched last Tuesday’s Democratic National Convention, which featured Hillary Clinton. Tuesday’s RNC lineup included remarks by President George Bush via satellite, former Sen. Fred Thompson and Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman.

MSM: They were for Palin before they were against her

Sarah Palin "Winged" Her Speech Because of "Broken" Teleprompter
Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.

According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech. [see the update below on this part]

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory [and relying on her printed text, clearly looking down occasionally at the printed page], to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

Sarah Palin. Winner.

#4  hmmmm... how often does it happen that a teleprompter fails for two speakers in a row?! I question the timing and the aide who was responsible for making sure that it worked.

#8  I was quite convinced that she did not need any teleprompter at all, based on her peeks at her notes. In fact, I was convinced that she told them to skip the teleprompter entirely.

#9  I hate to say it but this sounds bogus to me. Guy was given a new telepromter, one he was unfamiliar with, right before a big speach? Either someone is incompetent at that convention or something is wrong in the story. And someone blocked a teleprompter with a sign? They let the audience in that close that the teleprompters could be bumped or blocked? Incompetence again?

I think we have a bit of exaggeration and mythmaking here. THe prefect story to make her a superhero and at the same time cover any minor gaff she might have had during the speech.

#10  I don't have time to look for a link right now (maybe Power Line?), but I read earlier today that the teleprompter wasn't paused for the applause she got and therefore it got way ahead of her - so she just gave it from her notes and memory.
Posted by: Barbara Skolaut || 09/04/2008 20:57 Comments || Top||

#11  I too am suspicious of the teleprompter malfunction for both speeches.
For Palin to bring a back up of notes just shows what a smart cookie she really is.
Something else that bugs me, is learning how the speeches are given ahead of time to the news media so they can comment. This is so very wrong IMO, A big part of the comments should be their evaluation being the same as ours digesting the speech at that time, not comments after picking every word apart, or commenting on how well they will deliver the speech.

#12  Jan, that annoys me too.
Posted by: Spike Uniter || 09/04/2008 21:32 Comments || Top||

#13  There were issues with the pacing in the teleprompter, mainly due to the long audience applause pauses. This was the firs time that this teleprompter operator had worked wiht Sarah Palin, and there were "disconnects" on rate, lag vs lead, the ad lib Sarah put in there, etc.

If any of you had ever worked with a teleprompter, you'd know that its like being a soloist and an accompanist. The accompanist needs to learn your pacing, where you tend to go into "riffs", how you come back from them, etc. They also learn if you like the teleprompter to lead you (i.e. be on the next bit while you are speaking the current one) so you can "slug the words" in advance, or if you like it lagged so you can read the words and still hold the phrasing visually. I would bet that this operator is assigned to stay with her for the rest of the campaign, and practices a bit more with her to smooth out these irregularities.

That there would be issues with a new GOP teleprompter operator is not surprising.

But it wasn't strictly a "malfunction", even though there were issues.

So both sides are relatively correct.

al Gurdian sez Biden sez "Obama might pursue criminal charges against Bush "
Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November.
If you really REALLY want to piss of the trunks and unify the GOP...Go ahead, Make my day!

Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
of course...chrismathewwsolberman were too busy dreaming about their man crush on BO

But his statements represent the Democrats' strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years.
the donk controlled Congress is the most despised and detested Congress in modern history. And all they can fixate is on GW. Talk about a bunch o losers.

"If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued," Biden said during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to ABC.

"[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution," he added, "out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president -- no one is above the law."
Are ya planning to go after harry Reid's corrupt family? What about Murtha and all the deals he swung to his brother? Didn't think so.

Obama sounded a similar note in April, vowing that if elected, he would ask his attorney general to initiate a prompt review of Bush-era actions to distinguish between possible "genuine crimes" and "really bad policies".
I say go ahead. You would have a donk Congress with a rating 3 times lower than GW's led by a Presidency with target fixation on the wrong, friggin target...prosecuting a former President while Rome burns.

"[I]f crimes have been committed, they should be investigated," Obama told the Philadelphia Daily News. "You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt, because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve."
Some of which originate in a do-nothing, donk-controlled Congress.

Congressional Democrats have issued a flurry of subpoenas this year to senior Bush administration aides as part of a broad inquiry into the authorisation of torturous interrogation tactics used at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
Geez. Sarah was right. Fixated on the "rights" on combatants who are not covered by the Geneva convention while Murtha "convicts" innocent Marines in the MSM

Three veterans of the Bush White House have been held in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to respond to subpoenas: former counsel Harriet Miers, former political adviser Karl Rove, and current chief of staff Josh Bolten. The contempt battle is currently before a federal court.
Convictions?

#3  That was the start of the fall of the Roman Republic. Making being a political opponent a crime. In the end that's why Caesar took the legions across the Rubicon because he knew what awaited him in Rome for his success on the field but losing the power game in the Senate. What goes around, comes around. Those who do this then will have to suspend the constitution knowing that if power does change then it'll be their turn in the dockets. So they can not permit the orderly transfer of power.

#4  That is what I fear we are coming to, Procopius2k. That the entrenched political class, on both sides, is too corrupt and to reluctant to let go of power and will happily piss on the constitution just for power grabs.
Hopefully, McCain/Palin can break this cycle, but we will see. If Bambi is elected, I can see some American generals crossing the Rubicon to restore the Republic.

#6  LH - you remember what kicked this off? The October Surprise investigation the Democrats initiated against Ronald Reagan based upon that period's 'truthers' who believed he had conspired with the Iranian so to thwart the release of the hostages till after the election. Since then its been one round of hits, each against the other, depending upon who rule the gavel. Tit for tat and its getting nastier each time. It's no different over in the judicial nominations since Bork. They're so wrapped up in things that are no more than the stereotypical show trials that they lost perspective on preserving the republic. So go for it LH, let's keep upping the bid cause I know were its all going to lead.

#8  Maybe I was unclear. Im not calling for any prosecutions in particular. But im saying that the quotes you quys are getting upset about are of the "we cant rule it out" variety, not the "we will do it" variety.

And I dont see how its possible to rule out prosecutions, if evidence of actual criminal wrong doing occurs. For an administration that isnt even over, for crying out loud.

#9  They'd have to find an attorney general willing to try the cases, judges to hear them, and knowing that it's likely not only derisive laughter but subsequent retribution awaits if they have to take it as far as the Supreme Court and lose. The Bushes have deep pockets and a great many friends with deep pockets, and they know lots and lots of very good lawyers -- better even the Barack and Michelle Obama put together.

And of course, this does presume the Democrats keep control of Congress.

#11  I have no idea about Congress, liberalhawk. But Sarah Palin has suddenly caused a lot of people to think about things that had been decided. And, the Democrats don't hold either House so tightly that a few districts here and there won't make a big difference in which party gets to be majority, especially with Joe Lieberman clearly in play.

#14  whether the bushes are loyal to Gonzales or not is not my point. My point is that there may well be grounds for prosecution of Gonzales or folks lower down at DOJ that are quite different from the political circus of a prosecution of Bush. You can hardly expect Biden or Obama to give a promise not to prosecute Gonzales, and that seems to be what some here are expecting. Its particularly ironic since in another thread folks are trumpeting over the sentencing of the former mayor of Detroit.

#15  And Palin is not going to help the GOP win congress. I doubt she will help McCain win the election. Yeah, she revs up the base - but by the same toke she revs up the Dem base, and gives Obama an even freer hand to run to the center. And it makes it harder to portray McCain as a centrist and a real break from Bush. Not to mention gutting the experience attack on Obama.

#27  The intentional erosion of social contract that started with Gore's petulance at losing in 2000, aided and abetted by the media, moved into open war as it became fasionable to openly state one 'hated' Bush, Cheney, conservatives.

When one indulges and celebrates hatred, the next small step is to justify to oneself any and every sort of destructive attacks. We've seen Western media embrace transparent lies (Dan Rather, Eason Jordan, the French TV video that launched the latest intifada, the faked footage from Lebanon, unvetted agitprop from Ba'athist spokesman in Iraq ...) in order to attack the Bush administration and our efforts in Iraq. We've seen vicious slanders, smears and intentional distortions thrown at Bush and Cheney, at Joe Lieberman and others.

The right and centrists have not attacked back. For years we've absorbed and worked around them in the belief that the existential threats we face require singleness of purpose on our part. The cynical and utterly destructive prosecutions around Plamegate were not met in kind by Bush, who let Sandy Berger get off with a 2 yr suspension of his security clearance FOR DESTROYING RECORDS RELATING TO TERROR ISSUES IN THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN. I believe Bush did so to avoid an all out civil division while we deal with Iraq and other threats. And while many here grew increasingly frustrated with Bush's passivity and failure to respond, I've not criticized him on this point because I think I know what greater goal he is trying hard to achieve.

But this has got to stop. There is no more slack for tolerating the destructive and pernicious actions of the left over the last 8 years. If Biden and Pelosi his puppetmaster even continue to talk this talk, NS will not be the only one who takes careful stock of equipment inventories.

#30  Why are we letting this manure monger back?

If Biden is serious about this, he should make it a BIG campaign issue now. If what Gonzales did was so bad, impeach or make it a political issue for the American people to decide. But don't weasel into office and then start a bunch of political witch hunts and show trials. Even McCarthy didn't sink that low, even though he was right.

That may be the EUropean or Greek way, but it's not American and it will rend the country asunder.

#31  I don't know. I could see prosecuting Gonzales. Of course, I wanted to see Sandy Berger go to jail too. I don't thank that's what Biden and the other commenters here are thinking of.

India-Pakistan
Sherry denies political vendetta against Nawaz
Information Minister Sherry Rehman on Tuesday denied reports that the National Accountability Bureau was reopening cases against the Sharif brothers.

While addressing a press conference here at the PID media centre, she said the PPP would not destabilise the PML-N government in the Punjab, as her party was part of the alliance there. The minister said that Asif Ali Zardari was emerging as a consensus candidate for the presidency by almost all the political parties of the country and that the government did not need horse-trading.

"Majority of the political parties, including the Awami National Party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the JUI-F, parties from Balochistan, individual members of parliament from the PML-Q and even the Jamaat-e-Islami have announced their support for Zardari's candidature," she added.

She said the decision of major political forces to set their differences aside and back a candidate that was a symbol of the federation reflected their commitment to the cause of a strong Pakistan.

She said Asif Ali Zardari had the credentials to serve the cause of the federation as well as strong parliamentary institutions. "This is an indication of a realisation among all the political forces that the office of president should support a parliamentary system that stands for people's representation.

"Zardari also announced that the PPP does not believe in politics of revenge as he was convinced that democracy is the best revenge," she said. To a question, she said Zardari would be different from Musharraf, as he would not enter the presidency by violating the Constitution, neither has he created a king's party like the previous practices.

"Rather he is the leader of the largest political force in the country, which enjoys support of almost all the political powers," she added. She said the credit of removing a dictator from the presidency without any violence goes to the PPP and its allies.

Agencies add: Sherry Rehman made it clear that there was no political vendetta against PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, stressing the PPP does not believe in the politics of vengeance. Replying to a question, she said, "We want politics of harmony and consensus." She further said some elements were trying to create anarchy among political parties but ìwe want all the democratic parties to flourish in the larger interest of the country.î

To another question, Sherry said edible items would be provided at all the Utility Stores at subsidized rates in Ramazan. She said a surveillance committee headed by the finance minister would ensure the provision of edible items at controlled rates.

To a question, she said Zardari was neither a general nor a bureaucrat. He is a political figure and enjoys the support of the people. To a question about the suspension of the military operation in the tribal areas, she said the operation had been suspended in respect of the holy month of Ramazan.

"The suspension of the military operation does not mean that the government is negotiating with the terrorist elements," she said, adding the displaced people of Bajaur were returning and over 150,000 people had returned to their homes during the last few days.

Women's burial probe being covered up
Serious questions have now been raised over the possible outcome of the probe into the burying alive of five women in Balochistan.

Tariq Khosa, who was assigned to probe the gory incident, has been quietly stopped from going to Balochistan and made to sit in Islamabad, with a limited mandate to only monitor investigations. He would not be allowed to go and visit the scene of the crime.

An official said, ultimately the whole of Pakistan would be required to depend solely on the report of the Balochistan police, which, since the girls were buried some two months ago, has been making desperate attempts to cover up the issue by denying that it happened at all.

Serious questions about a possible cover-up are gaining currency because of the fact that the Balochistan government had maintained during the last two months that no such incident had taken place anywhere in the province.

The same police officers may now try to present their earlier lies as the truth in order to save face. A couple of days ago, Balochistan IG Asif Nawaz sent a report to Interior Secretary Kamal Shah in which he had claimed that no such incident had occurred at all.

A furious secretary had rejected this half-baked and bogus report and directed the IG to send another report based on facts. The second ill-prepared report too was rejected by Interior Adviser Rehman Malik on Monday in the Senate after terming it factually correct.

Now all of a sudden the same Balochistan cops have claimed to have arrested the killers and found the graves of the victims. IG Asif Nawaz has even attacked the English language media for giving a "sensational flavour" to the whole issue. The biased attitude of Asif Nawaz has led many to believe that the police would not conduct a fair investigation into the tragedy.

However, with mounting pressure from all sides, the lethargic Balochistan police bosses have suddenly become hyperactive and have started producing results. They not only claim to have arrested the accused, but the graves of the women have also been found. But the question which is not being answered is why the Balochistan police chief did not have such facts available to him two months earlier, and why he only moved to uncover the facts when the whole of Pakistan raised a hue and cry over this human tragedy.

Earlier, at the time of the appointment of Tariq Khosa as head of the investigation team, it was considered that his expertise would be more relevant to such a big probe, as he had served as the Balochistan IG and many thought that he would not let the real culprits off the hook if given a free hand to proceed.

The Interior ministry bosses are said to have informed Tariq Khosa that he would only be monitoring these investigations without visiting the scene of the crime, as under the police order 2002, the federal government cannot send its own officers for any probe into a province.

These legal complications may have become a big hurdle in the way of a fair and uncompromising probe into the tragedy as the appointment of Tariq Khosa was seen as a ray of hope for justice, as he is considered to be a cop who does not believe in pleasing the powerful and only follows his own conscience. Khosa had earned respect when he had conducted aggressive investigations into the Swiss visa scam which had finally led to closure of the embassy and transfer of all the diplomatic staff, including the ambassador, to their home country.

Talking to The News, Tariq Khosa confirmed that he would be monitoring these investigations from Islamabad. He said there was no ill-will involved, as under the law he could not go and probe the issue in the province. However, Khosa said he was keenly following developments taking place at the scene of the crime and had already set guidelines for those who were now probing these killings.

He said in his absence he had given the names of certain police officers in Balochistan, who would do full justice to these investigations. These honourable officers would not succumb to any pressure. He maintained that so far he is satisfied with the performance of the policemen now probing the tragedy.

Khosa said he had asked the officers to get the DNA of the women whose bodies were taken out of the graves and then get a report from the doctors whether they were buried alive or were first killed and then put into the grave.

Tariq Khosa said the real problem with the honour killings is that in such cases, the father, brother or other relatives of the accused get an FIR registered and then they withdraw it after a compromise. He said unless the state becomes a party to such killings and courts refuse to compromise the killers would not be stopped.

Code Pink attempts to disrupt Palin speech, fails miserably
Two activists of the women’s peace group CODEPINK attempted to disrupted Sarah Palin’s speech tonight at the Republican National Convention when they approached the stage where Palin was speaking,
in reckless disregard of their own lives. However, before Sarah could attack,
security then grabbed Benjamin and Evans and escorted them one at a time out of the St. Paul Xcel Center,
thereby sparing their wretched lives
where they were held until the end of the Palin’s speech and told they would be arrested if they tried to reenter.

#1  I saw a very brief shot of about 4 burly security types hauling one of these fascist buffoons out of the hall. Palin appeared not to notice at all.

#3  How did they get in? You need an appropriate pass to get into the building. How the hell does Code Pink manage (still!) to get passes to Republican events?

One can only hope the Obama campaign will quickly throw her off the bus. That the money will be sent back would have been entirely too much to expect even before the namimg of Palin brought in well over $10 million. Now Obama neeeeeeds the extra money.

#12  I agree that the most probable way they got in was by using media passes.
We should learn who this media person was and disbar him or her(or whatever it's called for the media)for doing so.
This breach in security is huge. This media person should also be held responsible for the cost of the security manpower used to deal with this as well.

Find out which media and ban them from the event altogether. This has to stop - these alledged women could easily have been carrying something dangerous or biological (which they would have no problems planting near the potium).
