They were there in hopes of seeing a ghost train that crashed on the Bostian Bridge on Aug. 27, 1891. Legend has it that the ghost train returns to haunt the tracks on the anniversary of the crash, which killed 30 people and injured many others. Can ya see it?

In China, many local (not express) trains have no toilet, just a hole in the floor straight onto the tracks. It serves as an effective deterrent to keep people away who don't belong there.

Bottom line, the average granola cant afford a pair of $200 eco-friendly denim jeans. Obviously, there needs to be a tax on the capitalist garment industry to subsidize the sustainable clothing sector. Also, governments will need to develop price control mechanisms to address the remaining cost inequity. This will also require an international fund to distribute wealth to the third world countries trying to establish labor unions. And maybe there should be a huge global conference for bureaucrats and activists to call attention to this injustice.

No first you have a luncheon in some exotic place to discuss holding a meeting in some other exotic location to discuss holding a pre-conference meeting where the final conference agenda and attendees are hand selected.
Then you have the actual conference (again in some exotic location - preferably somewhere with plenty of 5-star hotels and hookers) followed up by a couple of follow-up meetings.
Then you decide on a list of talking points to advance the agenda and issue that as the 'final report'.

Seriously, S.A.M., I never heard of her before. I also don't know who they are, though from your context I suppose they're some sort of musical group. Loud, probably.
The last CD I purchased (the only one in years) was Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream."
Just a guess, but I doubt these Pretenders would fit anywhere within my musical tastes.

The panorama from Gundaling Hills is especially beautiful in this afternoon. You can see the whole city, its surrounding orchards, and the crater of Mount Sibayak, a volcano that has been dormant for centuries. To the west is Mount Sinabung (another dormant volcano), while the Karo plains lie on the south.

Hmmmm, dormant for centuries....well, guess what. On the geologic timescale, that's about the time of a sneeze. Or maybe half a one. Lots of volcano's of late. If this keeps up, with enough ash being ejected we may see some rather serious weather effects.
Ash is the major concern so far as long range effects of a volcano, the other dangers are primarily local in nature.

One surprising result from the model relates to the energy released from plates in earthquake zones. "It had been thought that the majority of energy associated with plate tectonics is released when plates bend, but it turns out that's much less important than previously thought," Gurnis says. "Instead, we found that much of the energy dissipation occurs in the earth's deep interior. We never saw this when we looked on smaller scales."

[Pak Daily Times] Floodwaters made another break on Saturday in the levee protecting Thatta city, as thousands of residents fled for high ground and left the city nearly empty.
Both sides of the area's main road were crowded with people from Thatta and nearby flooded villages fleeing the floodwaters. Many had spent the night sleeping out in the open.
Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro, the Thatta disaster management official, said more than 175,000 people had left the city, leaving few behind.
Some are heading for nearby towns or cities, he said, with thousands also headed for the high ground of an ancient graveyard.
He said the latest levee breach had happened early on Saturday and would worsen the flooding situation.
Protest: Flood victims blocked a road in Thatta to protest the shortage of aid, most of which is randomly thrown from trucks into crowds of needy people.
"The people who come here to give us food treat us like beggars. They just throw the food. It is humiliating," said 80-year-old Karima, who uses only one name. She was living in the graveyard with more than two dozen relatives.
The floods also displaced thousands of minority Hindus in Sindh. About 3,000 were living at a centuries-old Hindu temple inside the sprawling graveyard.
Meanwhile, authorities have been battling for days to save Shahdadkot, raising an embankment several kilometres long as the water has crept higher.

[Pak Daily Times] Americans are giving a paltry amount for relief efforts in Pakistan compared to other overseas disasters. They were more than 40 times more generous for the Haiti earthquake. Perhaps because "death to America" demonstrations aren't very common in Haiti.
Reasons include the slow-motion nature of the calamity, relatively scant TV coverage, and - unmistakably - the fact that Pakistan is viewed warily by many Americans. Well, call me "mean spirited", but I just have a hard time with paying for a local Rage Boy's nice new tent...
No disasters are alike. Yet a month into Pakistan's flood catastrophe, with 8 million people in dire need and a fifth of its territory affected, the donation comparisons are startling.
InterAction, an umbrella group for US relief agencies active abroad, says its affiliates have raised about $12 million thus far for Pakistan, compared to more than $500 million at the same stage of the Haiti earthquake relief effort earlier this year. The American Red Cross, traditionally the biggest recipient of disaster relief donations, has collected about $2 million for Pakistan and is dipping into a contingency fund to support its work there. At the same stage, it had raised about $100 million in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, more than $670 million for Hurricane Katrina and about $230 million for the Haiti quake.
"People find it complicated to understand our relationship with Pakistan - how the government works, who to trust," said Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
"It was easier to look at a place like Haiti and know a quick response was needed," she said.

At a party last night. A good friend is an American Red Cross official. The RC is about tapped out in its international relief efforts. Haiti took a lot, and the RC is NOT getting much in the way of donations for Pakistan.
One thing she said that stuck with me: floods (in her experience) always engender fewer donations than earthquakes and hurricanes. A flood is a slow-motion disaster so people don't see the problem as quickly or as well as they do with an earthquake.
She then noted that middle America doesn't seem to be well disposed towards Pakistan (Ed. really?). Many Americans see Pakistan as an enemy and as a corrupt state. Combine these facts and you have an explanation for why the money isn't flowing in.

The 5.9 magnitude quake struck on Friday south of the northern city of Damghan. The worst in recent times was a 6.3 magnitude quake which hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people, about a quarter of its population, and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.

[Iran Press] Helicopter crash in Venezuela has killed ten members of the country's National Guard who were on a mission to track drug traffickers near the Colombian border.
The crash took place in western Apure State near the Colombian border on Friday as three officers along with seven soldiers were taking off on a counter-narcotics mission.
"Three officers and seven soldiers belonging to the Bolivarian National Guard force died late Friday in an accident involving a helicopter... that was search for narcotics traffickers," Commander General Luis Alfredo Dominguez was quoted by the state news service AVN.
The cause of the accident, which occurred near the town of Buena Vista in Apure, remains unknown.
"These citizens were killed in the line of duty, in fact, we have now captured one of the people we were looking for," Dominguez said.
Venezuela lies on the main route that carries Colombian cocaine destined for Europe and the United States.

Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Rome on Sunday as Italy prepares to mark the second anniversary of a friendship treaty signed between them and Libya.

RICHMOND, Calif.California officials are outfitting preschoolers in Contra Costa County with tracking devices they say will save staff time and money. Getting them ready for the new Progressive America - where everyone will have to wear a tracking device.
The system was introduced Tuesday. When at the school, students will wear a jersey that has a small radio frequency tag. The tag will send signals to sensors that help track children's whereabouts, attendance and even whether they've eaten or not. How often do they take attendance in CA? How the heck can a RFID tag tell if a student has eaten? And what business is it of the schools anyway? Will a lunchroom monitor force-feed little Jenny the "Chef's Surprise" lunch if she doesn't eat enough of it?
School officials say it will free up teachers and administrators who previously had to note on paper files when a child was absent or had eaten. The fact that you have administrators and teachers walking around noting the location of each student and how much the've eaten give a broad hint for another cost-cutting move - but the Teachers mafia union might not like it.
It cost $50,000 and was paid by a federal grant.

So how exactly will this save time and money? Will teachers and administrators take a pay cut because they no longer have to do the heavy lifting of taking attendance or announcing lunch? And teacher's unions wonder why people think they're a bunch of overpaid, lazy incompetents.
Or could it be to get young Johnny and Janey used to being electronically monitored? It's not so bad, right, kids? Right, mom and dad? By the time you're 25 or 26, you won't even notice. And it's for your own good.

saw this on the news... teachers claim that monitoring the kids in the halls between activities and on the playground is taking a toll on them. district claims that by not having having to hire staff to monitor the halls and playground, they can save $$$.
total boondoggle. the district is not going to downsize the positions filled now by hall staff and playground monitors. also very bad idea to rely on the devices to ensure kids are ok. you can see on the screen that johnny and billy are on the playground, but no idea if they are hitting each other or hurt.
some asshat from the school praised the idea that parents could check out their kids using the touch screen without having to interact with staff -- as a convenience parents would appreciate.

[Pak Daily Times] Floodwaters made another break on Saturday in the levee protecting Thatta city, as thousands of residents fled for high ground and left the city nearly empty.
[Pak Daily Times] Three people, including two children, have been killed and 40 others injured in an earthquake which struck Iran's biggest desert, Dasht-e Kavir, state television reported on Saturday. The 5.9 magnitude quake struck on Friday south of the northern city of Damghan. In a separate report, the state television website quoted secretary general of Iran Red Crescent, Zaher Rostani, as saying that an elderly woman was also among those killed in the quake. The website said six villages near Damghan were damaged in the quake which was about 278 kilometres (167 miles) east of Tehran. The tremor, which struck at 11:53 pm (1923 GMT) Friday, was also felt in the capital Tehran. Iran sits astride several major fault lines in the Earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent times was a 6.3 magnitude quake which hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people, about a quarter of its population, and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
