-Lurid Crime Tales-
Always Check Your Pockets
Police in Gallatin, Tennessee found the evidence that led to a criminal suspect right behind him. Officers say that Dustin Matthew Marshall tried on a new pair of jeans and left without paying for them. WTVF-TV reported that employees found Marshall's old jeans in a dressing room -- with his wallet still in them.
DOH! My Momma told me to always check my pockets when taking my pants off.
Police caught up with Marshall and his girlfriend Lindsey Samantha Scholl on Saturday evening after a couple fled a steakhouse without paying their bill.
Now what the heck happened to my wallet?
When police searched their home, they found evidence of auto burglaries and an apartment break-in as well. They were booked into the county jail on burglary, three counts of theft from a motor vehicle, two counts of theft under $500 and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Possesion of drug paraphernalia? I think I know why he forgot his wallet.

Treasury sees profit in latest sale of 1.5 bln Citigroup stock
(KUNA) -- The US Treasury Department on Tuesday announced it expects to make profit in its latest sale of 1.5 billion shares of Citigroup years after investing USD 45 billion in emergency bailout funds to stabilize the troubled financial firm.

The Treasury Department said in a statement it would begin its fourth trading plan under which investment bank Morgan Stanley "will have discretionary authority to sell 1.5 billion shares of Citigroup common stock under certain parameters".

At the height of the financial crisis, the Treasury poured a portion of funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) into shoring up Citigroup's capital reserves in exchange for 7.7 billion in Citigroup shares, once the worlds largest bank.

To date, the Treasury said, taxpayers have recouped USD 41.6 billion back from Citigroup in dividends, interest, repayment and sales of common stock.

When the sale announced Tuesday is complete, the government's share of the bank would drop to about seven percent of total shares outstanding, down from a peak 27 percent.

In a corporate report released Monday, Citigroup said it earned USD 2.2 billion in net income in the third quarter, up from USD 101 million in the same quarter of 2009. Its revenue, however, dropped to roughly USD 21 billion from USD 23 billion a year ago.

Ban Ki-Moon calls on Europe not to "demonize" immigrants, in particular Muslims
(KUNA) -- UN Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday expressed concern over the rising discrimination against immigrants, especially Mohammedans in Europe.
If Beelzebub himself were to appear in a puff of smoke and a flash of light, with the smell of brimstone all around him, some dumbass would caution us against "demonizing" him.
"My predecessor Kofi Annan came to Parliament in 2004 and made an impatient call to seize the momentum on immigration and not to demonize the other. I wish I could report the situation has improved in the intervening years, but as a friend of Europe, I share profound concern," he told the European Parliament in its full session held in the city of Strasbourg this afternoon.

"Some play on people's fears. Some invoke liberal values for illiberal causes. They accuse immigrants of violating European values," he stressed.

"Today the primary target is immigrants of Mohammedan faith," he added and urged for tolerance in Europe.

He focused in his speech on three key challenges; fight against poverty, climate change and nuclear disarmament.

#1  LOL Fred!

As for Ban Ki-Moon, please, oh wise one, tell us all about being besieged by foreign cultures:

"South Korea is ethnically one of the most homogeneous societies in the world with more than 99 per cent of inhabitants having Korean ethnicity.[119] Koreans describe their ethnic homogeneous society using the word ´ÜÀϹÎÁ·±¹°¡ (Dan-il minjok guk ga, which literally means the single race society.)"

#8  "Erdogan says assimilation is a crime against humanity"

So Turkey won't mind if a bunch of Germans (and Americans) move to his country, legally or otherwise, suck off the gummint teat there, and continue to act, dress, and speak just like Germans and Americans?

'Cuz otherwise, they'd be committing a crime against humanity, and we can't have that.

EU Parliament opposes food from cloned animals
(KUNA) -- The European Parliament (EP) has reeiterated its commitment to prevent the sale of meat and milk from cloned animals in the EU, the EP said in a statement Tuesday.

The announcement came following talks with the EU Council and the European Commission and the Commission's publication of a new report on cloning.
The EU has a Parliament .. Council .. and Commission. I think right there you have everything's that wrong with the way Europe is set up these days ...
The EP and the Council are set to enter into conciliation negotiations to try and find an agreement on proposed updates to "novel foods" rules. The major stumbling blocks relate to food from cloned animals.

Gianni Pittella, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Chair of Parliament's delegation for conciliation negotiations on the novel foods regulation, welcomed the fact that the EU Parliament, Council and the Commission are committed to cooperating and resolving the current legal uncertainty on food from cloned animals.

"MEPs support the introduction of a moratorium - as soon as possible - to guarantee consumer protection in this sector. Parliament is also determined to ensure proper safety checks and labelling for foods produced with the aid of nanotechnology" added Pittella.

#1  The only problem I can foresee with Cloned animals is that essentially they're twins and would all be susceptible to exactly the same diseases.
Otherwise they would be nothing wrong with raising and eating them, they would obviously be selected for desirable qualities, such as higher Meat to feed ratio, etc.

#2  In yesterday's Daily Mail it reports the exact opposite.

"EU to back sale of meat and milk from cloned animal offspring"

Cloned animals are different in some ways, as they age faster than their "original". Dolly the first cloned sheep aged so quickly that it sparked research into cell division and the causes of the aging process.

IMO BEES are suffering mass die-offs due to IMPROPER CROSS-BREEDING METHODS [genetic security, Albino-ism] + CHEMICAL STIMULATIONS, as also complemented by RUSH TO MASS PRODUCTION.
IMO again, the same will occur to CLONED, HOOFED ANIMALS unless more care is taken. WE HUMANS MAY BE [unintentionally?] ALTERING THE NATURAL GENETIC SECURITY OF VITAL BIOTIC SPECIAS FOR THE SAKE OF CHEAP + EFFICIENT CONSUMER MASS CONSUMPTION. We may be endangering our own future survival as Humans by endangering the genetic ability of Human preferred Plant, Animal Species to resist natural disease + environmental change.

France arrests over 1,000 protesters
[Iran Press TV] Since the start of the week, French police have jugged close to 1,200 demonstrators protesting the French government's proposed pension reforms.

The government's interior ministry said that a total of 1,158 protesters have been jugged, 163 of them on Tuesday morning, AFP reported.

Police in Lyon jugged 56 people on Tuesday, including nine youths who reportedly overturned cars and set one on fire.

The Guardian reported that four policeman and one protester suffered minor injuries during the incident, and that the worst clashes occurred in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

The General Confederation of Labour Union (CGT), which is calling for another day of action on Wednesday, says at least 3.5 million people have participated in the national strikes on Tuesday, while government and police figures put the numbers at half a million, Rooters reported.

More than 2,600 petrol stations have been shut down nationwide, as more than 47 crude oil and oil product tankers were unable to discharge at the port of Marseille due to striking port workers, Bloomberg said.

President Sarkozy responded to the national unrest following a summit with Russian and German leaders, and said, "In a democracy, everyone can express themselves but you have to do so without violence or excesses."

"I will hold a meeting as soon as I return to Paris to unblock a certain number of situations, because there are people who want to work and who must not be deprived of petrol," said Sarkozy, who was speaking in Deauville at a summit with the leaders of Russia and Germany.

France has been hit by several coordinated strikes in the past two months in opposition to the proposed pension reforms that would increase the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62 and the full state pension age from 65 to 67. Sarkozy has refused to back down from his pension reform bill, which is expected to pass through parliament by the end of the week.

"La Belle France" - the hymn of the Front Populaire of 1936.

According to Wikipedia:
The Front Populaire, an alliance of left-wing movements, won the May 1936 legislative elections. The workers' movement welcomed this electoral victory by launching a general strike in May-June 1936. The socialist movement's euphoria was apparent in SFIO member Marceau Pivert's "Tout est possible!" (Everything is possible). However, as the economy continued to stall during the Great Depression, Blum was forced to stop his reforms and devalue the franc. With the French Senate controlled by conservatives, Blum, and thus the whole Popular Front, fell out of power in June 1937.

I'm sure that any similarities to current events are coincidental.

India-Pakistan
Seven million still lack shelter after floods: UN
[Dawn] At least seven million people are still without shelter in Pakistain nearly three months after catastrophic floods devastated huge parts of the country, the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society said Tuesday.

Torrential monsoon rains began falling in northwestern Pakistain in July, causing floods that moved steadily south, wiping out villages and farmland and affecting an area roughly the size of England.

"At least seven million people are currently without shelter in the flood-affected areas," UN spokeswoman Stacey Winston told a news conference in Islamabad.

She said that the floods destroyed and damaged over 1.9 million homes.

The United Nations has issued a record two-billion-dollar appeal for funds to cope with the disaster, which UN agencies say affected 21 million people.

Only around 35 per cent of the appeal has already been funded.

Winston estimated that 14 million people were in need of immediate humanitarian assistance, saying that the United Nations distributed food rations among 2.5 million people this month in 39 flood-affected districts.

Kid's view of military improving - rural kids make better soldiers
Two years of recession has been good for military recruiters. In the last year, not only were all recruiting quotas filled, but record high quality recruits were obtained (in terms of aptitude test scores and physical condition of applicants.) Moreover, more young men have a positive attitude towards the military. Three years ago, a record low 12 percent of military age young men said they would definitely consider joining the military. This year, that has gone to 17 percent and is still climbing.
and further down
The rural recruits are also a lot easier to train, and generally make better soldiers. The urban recruits often have a bad attitude, as well as a difficult time getting along with others, and following instructions. The urban schools deserve some of the blame for this, while rural schools tend to be far more orderly, and put more emphasis on civic responsibility.
No, rural schools have a tendency to hold onto core American values and common decency. City schools are too full of liberal crap to produce kids that are willing to help, work with others and work hard.

Read the rest at link, it is quite insightful.

#1  I submit it has more to do with the home than the school. Even in a rural school, at least in the county seat, there will be townies who display all the "urban values" described. But kids who grow up on a farm have a different life in so many ways. The problem is the family farm is now a luxury expenditure. They can't compete with corporate farms. Even a lot of what pass as "family farms" are really small to medium size businesses with multi-million dollar payrolls.

Along with the corresponding demise of hunting, I have often wondered what the end of the family farm will mean for military skills and aptitude, not only in the US.
