Czech Robs Bank to Pay off Debt, then Turns Himself in
[An Nahar] A Czech man was so intent on doing right by his lenders that he robbed a bank, before turning himself into the police to pay off his debt to society.

The 48-year-old stole tens of thousands of koruna (hundreds of euros, dollars) from a bank in a Prague suburb, police front man Tomas Hulan told Agence La Belle France Presse.

He walked into the bank on Monday, dressed normally and without a mask, and patiently waited in line before showing the teller a piece of paper saying he had a pistol in his briefcase.

"Ten minutes later, he called (the police emergency hotline) 158 to confess what he had done and promise to turn himself in, which he did the next evening," Hulan said.

The first-time offender told police he had wanted to pay off a loan from "some nice people" who had helped him after he was robbed.

"The man was an upstanding citizen till now. That's why he remains a free man while we conduct our probe," Hulan said, adding the man faced up to 10 years in jail.

Japanese Police Arrest Woman for Calling Them 15,000 Times
[An Nahar] Japanese police said Thursday they have incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
a woman for calling them more than 15,000 times over a six-month period.

Authorities repeatedly visited the 44-year-old and asked her to cease and desist. When she failed to stop making the calls, which started in May, police slapped handcuffs on her.

"She made as many as 927 emergency calls in one day....disturbing our police duties," said an official in the city of Sakai, near the western city of Osaka.

Authorities, who have so far ruled out mental illness for the woman's behavior, said her calls had "no real meaning".

"She didn't make up a story that required us to respond -- it was just total nonsense," the official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"We visited her place about 60 times before arresting her, trying to persuade her not to call us again. I wonder if she was just lonely."

The woman was charged with fraudulent obstruction of police business, which carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison or a fine of 500,000 yen ($4,900).

American hating, terrorist loving, Nobel Peace prize winner dies at 95

Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years as a prisoner in South Africa for killing innocents, then emerged to become his country's first black president, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and an enduring symbol of Marxism, mayhem and pestilence, died Thursday at 95.

No, he spent 27 years in jail for bombings that killed dozens. No mention in the media made of that, or of his lovely wife Winnie.

Irony would see him planted on The Day of the Vow (16 Dec), which commemorates Boer victory over the Zulu. History rewritten, it's called something else now of course. I'm for a slow funeral march with Sarie Marais played softly in the background.

Apartheid still exists, little has changed. The only differences are the signs have come down, a one party ANC 'rule' by blacks controls a piece of everything, crime is even worse, unemployment is rampant, the squalid townships have grown, the highways [now tolled] are full of potholes and the robots [stop signs] don't work, the military is fat, 50+ % HIV pos, and snoring under trees.

Think 'Detroit' with a population increase, a extinguished middle-class, and rampant HIV, and you'll have nailed it.

Major Winter Storm Spotted from Space
Unlike the balmy, decidedly un-December like weather that has enveloped parts of the eastern United States,
MAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING ALERT!!!
the West and Midwest have gotten a harsh blast of winter thanks to a powerful storm that blanketed a large swath of the country. The massive storm was spotted from orbit by the GOES West satellite.
Rather unremarkable pic at link.

The storm has dumped large amounts of snow and sent bone-chilling winds rushing across affected areas. It also brought temperatures that were much colder than average.
MAN-MADE CLIMATE CHANGE ALERT!!!

Big Hole National Park, in Montana, reported a temperature of minus 31.9 degrees Fahrenheit Thursday morning, and the National Weather Service reported snowfalls in the area from an inch to more than a foot.

Snow currently covers most of the Northern Plains, and is expected to continue through today, with the system gradually moving eastward and bringing snow and a mix of snow, ice and rain to areas from the Ohio Valley up to Albany, N.Y.

A severe ice storm could has unfolded from North Texas up through Kentucky, potentially causing power outages and dangerous road conditions.
Dallas has 3" of sleet over 1/2" of freezing rain and the temp will not even touch 33 degrees until late Sunday, thawing out Monday afternoon. It was 80 degrees and sunny Wednesday.

Deadly Storm Threatens European Tidal Surge
[An Nahar] A fierce storm battered northern Europe Thursday, leaving three people dead or missing, causing mass transport disruption and threatening the biggest tidal surge in decades.

Winds of up to 142 miles (228 kilometers) per hour battered northern Britannia while authorities evacuated residents and boosted flood defenses in low-lying areas across the region.

Dozens of flights were canceled or delayed in the Netherlands, Germany and Scotland, while rail services were shut down in several countries and one of Europe's longest bridges -- connecting Sweden to Denmark -- was to close.

Tens of thousands of homes were also left without power as so-called Storm Xaver tore through the area.

In Scotland, a lorry driver was killed when his vehicle toppled onto a number of cars near Edinburgh,
"Hoot, mon! M'truck![CRASH]"
while at least two other people were maimed by falling trees, police said.

Two sailors were reportedly swept overboard from a ship 14 miles off the southern Swedish coast on Thursday. Air-sea rescue services failed to find them.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he had convened a meeting of the government's emergency committee to ensure necessary measures were being taken.

Morocco Islamists under fire over women abuse bill
[Pak Daily Times] A long-awaited law to combat violence against women is currently under study in Morocco, but the Islamist-led government has had to revise its proposals after sharp criticism from rights groups.

A preliminary version of the bill, which is still in the drafting stage, threatens prison sentences of up to 25 years for perpetrators of violence against women. In addition, the bill would take unprecedented steps towards criminalising sexual harassment, with those convicted risking possible three-year jail terms.

As in numerous other Arab countries, sexual harassment of women is commonplace in Morocco, despite the adoption of a new constitution in 2011 that enshrines gender equality and urges the state to promote it.

But despite the progress that this new law would represent, women's associations have strongly criticised the proposed legislation. In particular, they accuse Bassima Hakkaoui, the minister for women's affairs -- herself a member of the ruling Islamist Party of Justice and Development -- of excluding them from the drafting of the bill.

"We have waited for years for this law and we are now very disappointed by its content," said Najat Errazi, who heads the Moroccan Association for Women's Rights, speaking in Casablanca at a meeting to discuss the bill.

According to a study published by the state planning commission (HCP) this week, nearly nine percent of women in Morocco have been physically subjected to sexual violence at least once. Sexual violence of a physical or psychological nature has affected some 25 percent of women overall, and a startling 40 percent among 18- to 24-year-olds.
Is that real abuse (which is terrible) or "abuse" as defined by an American academic feminist looking to fund a grant?
Last year, Hakkaoui acknowledged the problem by stating that six million women have suffered physical or verbal violence, more than half inflicted by their husbands.

Sara Soujar, another activist speaking at the meeting in Casablanca, argued that the bill fails to include provisions relating to single women.

"This category is totally absent... Reading the text, you get the impression that violence basically only affects married or divorced women, even though others may be more exposed," she said.

Her concerns resonate with the findings of the HCP study, that around one in every two unmarried women in Morocco was subjected to sexual violence -- whether physical or verbal -- during the year that it was carried out.

"Young women who work in factories or as housemaids, many of whom are minors, are no less exposed," Soujar said.

Others criticise the draft law for lacking clarity, noting that it deals with sexual violence against women and kiddies in the same clauses.

In the face of these objections, the government has been forced to set up a committee, headed by Islamist Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, to review the draft law and demonstrate its willingness to cooperate.

Progress is being closely followed in Morocco, where many have had traumatic personal experiences of a kind that the proposed legislation is designed to deter.

Last weekend, dozens of people gathered outside parliament in Rabat to denounce "all forms of violence against women", among them members of civil society groups as well as relatives of the victims.

"The ex-husband of my daughter used to beat her every day. It was like torture," one victim's father told AFP with tears in his eyes.

"On the day that he learnt she was going to ask for a divorce he killed her," the man added, holding close to him pictures of the injuries inflicted on his daughter.

On Monday, two teenage girls who were sexually assaulted in Rabat finally saw their aggressors tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
for four years for attempting to drug and rape them. Many considered the verdict too lenient.

Sudanese Killed in Firefight with Egypt Border Guards
[An Nahar] Four Sudanese were killed on Thursday in an exchange of fire with Egyptian border guards, security officials said, adding that 10 more were maimed.

Clashes erupted between the illegal migrants and Egyptian military forces along the Egypt-Sudan border, the officials said, and the maimed were transferred to Aswan hospital.

Many African migrants who enter Egypt later try to cross to Israel through Sinai, and several dozen have been killed in recent years along the 250-kilometer (155-mile) Israel-Egypt border.

Fighting erupts in Central African capital ahead of UN resolution
[Pak Daily Times] Several people have died in gunfire in the capital of Central African Republic, a senior aid worker said on Thursday, ahead of a key UN vote due to authorise foreign troops to restore order.

"There are dead and maimed," Sylvain Groulx, the head of Doctors Without Borders in the strife-torn country, told AFP, as his organization deployed a medical and surgical team to Bangui.

Heavy arms fire rocked several districts of the city from around 5:30 am (0430 GMT), while automatic weapons could be heard starting in the PK-12 area in the north, then spreading to other districts near the city centre, AFP journalists said.

The violence erupted as the UN Security Council prepared to vote on a resolution authorising thousands of African and French troops to end anarchy in the former French colony, where massacres have led to warnings of mass sectarian festivities.

A senior officer in the African MISCA peacekeeping force said the fighting broke out after former rebels of the Seleka alliance, who ousted president Francois Bozize in March, saw their foes in "anti-balaka" militias trying to infiltrate the Boy-Rabe district.

U.N. Council Backs Central African Military Intervention
[An Nahar] The U.N. Security Council on Thursday unanimously backed an African and French military intervention to halt deadly chaos in Central African Republic.

A French-drafted resolution gives a U.N. mandate to about 4,800 African and French troops being sent to the impoverished nation, which is facing growing Mohammedan-Christian strife.

La Belle France's U.N. envoy Gerard Araud said after the vote there is a risk of "mass atrocities" in Central African Republic and the 15-member council has a duty to act.

The resolution gives a 12-month mandate to the African-led International Support Mission in Central African Republic (MISCA).

French forces can use "all necessary measures" to support the African contingent.

There are currently about 2,500 troops in MISCA, which will eventually reach 3,600. La Belle France has 600 troops there and plans to increase this to 1,200.

Bangladesh
Govt vs Ershad
[Bangla Daily Star] The drama over HM Ershad's Jatiya Party
...aka Jatiya Front; a political party established by Bangladictator Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1986 to lend a veneer of respectability to his rule. Since nobody was amused he was forced to resign by popular demand in 1990. The party remains in existence with about a dozen seats in Bangla's parliament...
pulling out of the election race continued yesterday, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
and top Awami League leaders trying to persuade Ershad to change his decision and stop JP ministers from resigning from the polls-time cabinet.

Two ministers and a state minister of the JP met Hasina yesterday at the Prime Minister's Office, but did not submit their resignations to her as directed by Ershad.

They are Rawshan Ershad, health minister, Ruhul Amin Hawlader, civil aviation and tourism minister, and Mujibul Haque Chunnu, state minister for youth and sports.

When the trio told the PM that they had gone there to tender their resignations, Hasina said she had nothing to do with that as the president was out of the country.

As Hasina sought to know the reasons for their intent to resign, they raised three issues -- withdrawing the Maj Gen Manzoor murder case against Ershad, handing over the ownership of the controversial Janata Tower to Ershad and shifting the polls date.

Over the first two issues, the PM said she would look into those matters but added that she could not do anything about the election date. She advised them to talk to the Election Commission on the matter, two JP sources who met the PM told The Daily Star.

They also claimed that the PM told them that her party AL would not object if the EC changed the polls date.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
this newspaper could not verify these claims from the PMO.

The JP ministers talked to the prime minister for more than an hour and raised different issues for immediate settlement to keep Ershad in the election race.

According to the sources, Hasina told them that the election would be held in time whether or not the JP participated in it. The election is not going to be participated by all the parties any way, as the BNP is not taking part in it. So it will not matter much if the JP too boycotts the election.

The PM said her party wanted a continuation of the constitutional process through a holding of the election. She then went on to ask the JP ministers if they wanted to see the rise of militancy in the country, added the sources on condition of anonymity.

From the PMO the trio went straight to Ershad's President Park residence at Baridhara and informed him about the outcome of the meeting.

After they left, Hasina sat in a meeting with her adviser Ziauddin Bablu and water resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud -- both JP presidium members.

Mexico Finds Stolen Radioactive Material Amid Dirty Bomb Fear
[Rooters] Mexican police have found dangerous radioactive medical material stolen by thieves that the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
said could provide an ingredient for a "dirty bomb," the country's national nuclear safety commission CNSNS said on Wednesday.

The truck was found on Wednesday close to where it was stolen outside Mexico City. The thieves removed the radioactive material from a protective case, exposing them to dangerous levels of radiation then dumped it less than a mile away.

The truck was stolen on Monday while it was taking cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive waste-storage center, Mexican officials and the UN agency said earlier.

"Both the container and the radioactive source have been located," said Mardonio Jimenez Rojas, an official at the commission, told Rooters. "The radioactive source was removed from its container and was found a kilometer away."

"The thieves were exposed to radiation," he added, saying those exposed to the material could die. Experts were working on how to secure the radioactive material in a protective container, he said.

The vehicle was seized when the driver stopped at a gas station in the town of Temascalapa, 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Mexico City. Truck hijacking is common in Mexico and the theft occurred in the State of Mexico, which is not a narco mob stronghold.

H-1B giant Cognizant to Hire 10,000 U.S. Tech Workers
In what might be -- at least in part -- a bid to make nice with critics of its H-1B hiring, IT outsourcing company Cognizant Technology Solutions has announced plans to hire 10,000 workers in the U.S. over the next three years.
Tell me again, how does "making nice" impact the bottom line ?
The company is setting up its U.S. headquarters in College Station, Texas -- home to Texas A&M University -- and will donate $150,000 to the university's effort to lure high school students into STEM careers. Its global headquarters will remain in Teaneck, N.J.
Certainly a vast sum, that $150k.
For at least the past two years, Cognizant has been the country's top employer of H-1B visa-holders, and has been considered especially vulnerable to immigration reform proposals in Congress. The company has 29,000 employees in the U.S., and about 166,400 globally, the majority located in India.
Speaker Boehner moving quickly to assist this effort.
Bloomberg reports that Cognizant plans to bring in workers from other parts of the world, in addition to the 10,000 domestic hires.

"There is not enough people in this country right now with the skills I need at Cognizant," Cognizant President Gordon Coburn told Forbes. "We are at full employment for the IT sector. People graduating from IT schools have multiple offers. And I have 1,000 jobs open right now in the U.S. alone and I cannot fill them."
Ever consider TRAINING a few folks ?
Of course, that doesn't explain how he'll fill 10,000 openings.
See para three above.
Coburn told Bloomberg that the improved U.S. economy is driving the hiring push. Twice this year, the company has raised its forecast for profit and sales.
Which means we must do it again next year or I lose my job.
"We are committed to making big money supporting education to help the U.S. remain competitive in an increasingly global economy," Coburn said in Forbes. "Right now, we have to look overseas for employees. We are not bringing in foreign workers to lower the pay grade of IT professionals. We are doing it because we need to hire on a massive scale and that is a major challenge for companies like ours."
They sleep 5-7 to a room and walk to work because they enjoy one another's company and insist on helping the environment.

#3  Complete and utter bullshit.

The jobs going unfilled are that way because A) they are low pay for the work desired, and B) they have to be open to qualify for H1B stayus (AKA indentured servants/serfs) to fill them legally.

The net effect of H1B on the US tech sector has been to depress wages, force people out at age 40 (hire 2 Indians for less because H1B allows them to artificially depress the wages plus jack up the work hours), right when the US tech's earning power should be greatest because their productivity is greatest. It encourages 60+ hour work weeks and crappy engineering practices, inexperienced and poorly trained replacement repeating mistakes over and over, working 60+ a week endlessly, living 6 to an apartment so they can send back theDollars to their village.

And they wonder why US younger generation is avoiding the IT world? Its because they aren't blind or stupid when it comes to IT - they see the demolition of wages and working conditions thanks to H1B, big companies using the government to distort the market and create virtual serfs, and the stacked deck instead of the open competition on merit. H1B needs to be destroyed. Period. If we need the brainpower, then give them a green card, and let them compete fairly in the labor market. As it stands they have to accept lower pay and outrageous work demands because if they don't, )unlike a US worker who can tell the exploiter FK U) they get their H1B visa pulled by the *employer* and get carted back to Mumbai or whatever 3rd world shithole they came from.

End H1B *now*, its an abomination, and a strategic threat to the nation, as it destroys what little native tech capacity we have left.

#6  Ending these visas only solves part of the problem.

Until we as a nation stop telling ourselves that "middle class" means 4000 square feet with all the gimcracks and gewgaws, and a new car every four years, and two vacations a year, and private college education for all of our kids, and retirement at 62 with 15 years of retirement, and that all of this is guaranteed with no anxiety, fixing the visas will ultimately not bring things around. Techies have become as bad at this, in their own way, as union thugs were in earlier times (and I am a techie writing this).

Until we as a nation stop glamorizing entertainers and athletes and lawyers and "CSI" cops and the like and return to recognizing the value and dignity of workers and producers and entrepreneurs, fixing the visas will ultimately not solve the problem.

Until the female half of the nation stop running their mating lives like a bunch of hypergamic baboon troupe females and actually get the sense that chasing after exciting alpha-a$$hole bad boys to prove status to their other baboon troupe minded peers really is not as good as preferring decent hard working guys, even techie nerds, fixing the visas will not ultimately solve our problems.

Until the Gramscian termite in the academy stops teaching kids to hate Western civilization, authentic Judaism and Christianity, and the rigorous thought process that is necessary for tech training, pushing them to major in women's studies or public policy or postmodern English Lit, fixing the visas will do nothing.

Make foreigners get green cards. Good idea. Good start. But it really is only a small part of the problem. There are lots of reasons American kids don't go into tech that have nothing to do with H1-B, and we are lying to ourselves if we say otherwise.

#11  I work with CTS IT folks everyday. Several on my team and probably 25% of my extended IT team. Why CTS is successful is that they provide smart, capable, hardworking resources. The company likes the ability to move resources in and out of projects and the company without hassle (HR, legal, severance... That you have with full time associates).

On the negative side it is obvious this hurts American worked as well a CTS workers. CTS is very slow to give their employees green cards. The reason is that once these workers get their green cards they can work anywhere for more money. I have many conversations with CTS workers wanting to convert to full time. By our master service agreement we cannot convert and because they are non-green card they are stuck.

Spain Seizes 550 Kilos of Cocaine on Boat in Atlantic
[An Nahar] Spanish police seized over 550 kilos (1,200 pounds) of cocaine from a sailboat in the Atlantic and enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
three people, including two French crew members, the interior ministry said Thursday.

One of the crew members tried to set fire to the boat when a Spanish navy ship with police on board neared the sailboat about 500 nautical miles from Spain's Canary Islands, the ministry said in a statement.

"As the team of special agents approached, one of the crew members who was at the helm of the vessel tried to manipulate the motor, producing a great deal of smoke, to set fire to the sailboat and avoid the seizure of the drugs," it said.

A police search of the boat found the cocaine hidden inside the walls of the cabins.

The Grand Turk
Istanbul Mayor to Run again despite Protests
[An Nahar] The mayor of Istanbul, the target of protester anger during June's mass anti-government street demonstrations, will be running for office again next year, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday.

Kadir Topbas, a member of Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), has been nominated to stand for a third term in Turkey's municipal elections next March.

"Istanbul is very important for us," Erdogan, himself a former mayor of Turkey's biggest city, said at an AKP meeting.

Topbas, a 68-year-old architect, was first elected to the post in 2004.

The March elections are seen as a key test for Erdogan, his image badly bruised by the nationwide protests that erupted in June against his rule.

The demonstrations were sparked by a police crackdown on a peaceful sit-in to save an Istanbul park from being razed to make way for a development project.

Topbas angered protesters when he said the plans for Gezi Park would go ahead despite the vehement public opposition.

Great White North
Canada Set to Clash with Russia, Denmark over North Pole
[An Nahar] Canada is expected to file an application with the United Nations on Friday seeking to vastly expand its Arctic sea boundary, setting it on a collision course with Russia and Denmark.

Orders from the prime minister to eventually also include the North Pole in the claim, revealed in a recent news report, is expected to rankle Moscow and Copenhagen, which also have their eyes on the region.

Canada has spent much of the last decade surveying the far north seabed and gathering evidence in support of its submission to the global body.

Asserting sovereignty over an expansive Arctic archipelago and surrounding waters has been a key plank of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Tories.

"Canada is in the process of securing its sovereignty over the north," Harper's spokesman, Carl Vallee, told Agence France Presse.

But both Denmark and Russia are expected to file overlapping claims.

Denmark -- which confirmed in a 2011 government report its intention to lay claim to the North Pole -- is expected to submit its petition under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea by the end of next year.

Russia, meanwhile, filed a claim in 2002 but it was rejected due to a lack of supporting scientific evidence. It is widely expected to launch a new bid that includes the Pole after seeing what territories are staked out by Canada and Denmark.

The harsh, frigid and pristine Arctic is believed to be rich in hydrocarbons.

Rising temperatures have boosted interest in it, as melting ice opens up shipping routes and make hitherto inaccessible mineral resources easier to exploit.

Swiss Expert Insists Arafat Poisoning Likely despite France Finding
[An Nahar] A French report ruling out poisoning in Yasser Arafat's 2004 death has a glaring inconsistency, the co-author of a Swiss probe said Thursday, sticking by his team's conclusion that the Paleostinian leader was likely killed.

"Our data lean more towards the thesis of poisoning than in the opposite direction," Professor Francois Bochud, head of the Lausanne Institute of Applied Radiophysics, told AFP.

Bochud is the co-author of a report published last month that said the high levels of polonium -- a rare and highly radioactive element -- found in Arafat's remains and personal effects indicated third party involvement in his death.

An as-yet unpublished French report however rules out poisoning, a source close to the probe said this week, with an argument that the naturally occurring radioactive element radon, found in the ground, explained the high polonium levels.

Bochud, who has read the French report, stressed that the 107-page Swiss study had presented numerous arguments against that theory, the most compelling being that other remains exhumed from the same cemetery did not contain excessive levels of polonium.

Both the Swiss and the French experts thoroughly cleaned Arafat's bones to remove external contamination before carrying out their measurements, and proceeded to find identical levels of polonium, he pointed out.

"I have a hard time understanding why they, on one side say they have thoroughly cleaned the bones and eliminated contaminations, and at the same time explain their measurements with the very contamination they supposedly eliminated," he said.

"It's a bit difficult to follow their reasoning," he added.

Science & Technology
Scientists Decode Oldest-Known 'Human' DNA
[An Nahar] Anthropologists said Wednesday they had decoded the oldest DNA ever found in the human family, extracted from a 400,000-year-old thigh bone found in a pit in Spain.

The feat expands knowledge of human genetics by some 300,000 years, they said, but also suggests the odyssey of Man's evolution may have been more convoluted than thought.

The bone was dug up at an alleged burial site dubbed the Sima de los Huesos ("Pit of Bones"), preserved by a deep subterranean chill in Spain's northern Sierra de Atapuerca highlands.

"Our results show that we can now study DNA from human ancestors that are hundreds of thousands of years old," said Svante Paabo, director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, which took part in the study published in the journal Nature.

The previous oldest sequence of DNA from a hominin, a term meaning humans and their relatives, was that of a girl who lived about 80,000 years ago and belonged to an enigmatic Asian group called the Denisovans.

The Sima de los Huesos is the world's largest concentration of hominin fossils from the Middle Pleistocene period some 700,000 to 100,000 years ago. It has yielded 28 skeletons so far.

The individuals found there had previously been described as members of the Homo heidelbergensis group thought to have been the forerunners of modern-day humans (Homo sapiens) and their cousins, the Neanderthals.

Paabo and the research team had expected their DNA analysis to reveal that the owners of the Spanish skeletons had shared an ancestor with Neanderthals.

But this was not the case.

DNA shows family tree

The team sampled two grams (0.07 ounces) of bone powder extracted from a femur, and sequenced the genome of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is passed down along the maternal line.

They then compared this code with that of modern humans, apes, Neanderthals and their sister group the Denisovans.

What they found was surprising -- the Spanish hominins were more closely related to the geographically more distant Denisovans than to Neanderthals, said study co-author Matthias Meyer.

"The fact that the mtDNA of the Sima de los Huesos hominin shares a common ancestor with Denisovan rather than Neanderthal mtDNA is unexpected since its skeletal remains carry Neanderthal-derived features."

The findings throw up various possibilities.

One is that the Spanish individuals were related to a common ancestor of Neanderthals and their sister group, the Denisovans, said Meyer.

Alternatively, the group's unique features may have come from quite a different hominin group with Denisovan-like DNA.
I asked Occam what his opinion was, and he doubts that.
"This unexpected result points to a complex pattern of evolution in the origin of Neanderthals and modern humans," said Juan-Luis Arsuaga, director of the Centre for Research on Human Evolution and Behaviour in Madrid.

Humans and Neanderthals are widely thought to have shared an ancestor more recently with each other than with Denisovans.

The research team had first tested their technique of extracting DNA from ground bone on the remains of a Middle Pleistocene-era cave bear whose bones were also found at the Sima de los Huesos site.

DNA as old as that used in the study had hitherto only been found in permafrost -- frozen soil that has preserved the carcases of extinct animals like the woolly mammoth.

The Spanish site is located about 30 meters (100 feet) below the surface at a constant temperature of about 10.6 degrees Celsius (19 degrees Fahrenheit).
