On the Good Ship Lollypop Have a Wonderful Trip, Shirley
[LATimes] Shirley Temple Black, who as the most popular child movie star of all time lifted a filmgoing nation's spirits during the Depression and then grew up to be a diplomat, has died. She was 85.

Black died late Monday at her home in Woodside, Calif., according to publicist Cheryl J. Kagan. No cause was given.

From 1935 through 1938, the curly-haired moppet billed as Shirley Temple was the top box-office draw in the nation. She saved what became 20th Century Fox studios from bankruptcy and made more than 40 movies before she turned 12.

#1  Unlike Hollywood's current crop, think of the joy and happiness she brought to so many. Angels do sometimes walk among us.

#2  My Mom and I met her during a grocery store trip when we lived outside San Mateo (CA.) in the very early sixties. She was shopping there just like anybody else would be. No retinue, no security.

Really nice person and very gracious as I remember (I was about 10 at the time and had seen some of her films).

She will indeed be missed.

#1  He is correct in every way. Its not that she's a woman, she still has a long way to go with her driving if she is going to make it in NASCAR. She is from open wheel racing where there is no bump and grind like NASCAR. She has yet to get over it as a driver. He is right on the second point, she sells sex at NASCAR and she's not shy about it, just look at her godaddy commercials. It get attention and draws fans.

#2  Sports tipped from performance to entertainment driven a long while ago.

I would like to point out that NASCAR is a sport where a female athlete - and they are athletes, it is competition requiring physical exertion - can compete on the same field as male athletes. Unlike basketball, football, hockey, etc.

Russian Skater Shows More than Delight after Bronze
[An Nahar] Russian speed skater Olga Graf showed off more than she wanted after a bronze medal-winning performance in the Olympic Games 3,000 meters, ripping down the zip of her skin suit in delight.
Don't look, Ethel!
Graf, who won Russia's first medal of the Sochi Games, raised her arms aloft in triumph after crossing the finishing line and then pulled her zip down to her waist.
Omigawd! Not the zipper!
The tight skin suit burst open to reveal she had no underwear.
No underwear? Quick, Ethel! My pills!
Graf put her hand to her mouth in embarrassment
"Oops!"
and rapidly zipped back up, but keeping her smile.
"That's not a smile. It's a grimace!"
"You'd grimace, too, if you'd just caught your nipple in a zipper on international TV!"

"Yes it is true. There was nothing underneath," she was quoted as saying by the Sovietsky Sport daily.
Sovietsky Sport outlasted the Sovietsky Union? Who knew?
"We have great suits, they make the body feel light and as a result I wear nothing under them. When I finished the race I forgot about this."
"Yes, yes! We understand! Show us how you dunnit again!"
"And I thought, what a nightmare! And soon it will be all over YouTube. But in fact, nothing bad will come of it."
"There was a lot more skin shown at the Academisky Awards in Moskva last month!"
"In the end, I did not show that much," she mused.
In that case I won't bother...

#6  Considering how warm it is in Sochi its quite understandable that typical winter sports outfits would be just too hot.

Of course I might be a bit biased ... it's too cold here to desire to go outside. Sochi is looking like a warmer haven. It's -6F outside as I type this compared to Sochi's current 55F or 61F warmer.

55F is not a winter game! It's a late spring game.

As organized chaos unfolds at the family home in the Utah countryside outside Salt Lake City, the parents come to help out.

Alina is the first, followed by her "sister wives" Vicki and Valerie, and finally their husband Joe.

Indonesia Seeks to Protect Ancient Tribe
[An Nahar] Deep in a remote forest in the Indonesian archipelago, the Tasaday Kajang tribe lives much as it has done for centuries, resisting nearly all the trappings of modern life.
We seen dis movie.
Their lifestyle has drawn comparisons with the Amish in the U.S., but they live in even more basic conditions, residing in houses on stilts and dressing only in black sarongs and headdresses.

It is in stark contrast to even many rural areas of Southeast Asia's biggest economy, where the rapid growth of the middle class has led to an kaboom in the number of vehicles on the streets and people with smartphones.

-Land of the Free
Ohio National Guard stages drill fighting fictional "right-wing terrorists"
[Jihad Watch] The fighting ONG 52nd Civil Support Team training scenario involved a plot from local school district employees to use biological weapons in order to advance their beliefs about "protecting Gun Rights and Second Amendment rights."
Gun rights and 2nd Amendment rights?....Ok, I think I understand. It was the only theme available on such short notice.

Portsmouth Chief of Police Bill Raisin told NBC 3 WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia that the drill accurately represented "the reality of the world we live in," adding that such training "helps us all be prepared."
Nothing says 'reality' like making preparations for militant teachers ?
Internal ONG documents provided to Media Trackers after repeated delays provide further context to what WSAZ-TV reported last winter.

In the disaster-preparedness scenario, two Portsmouth Junior High School employees poisoned school lunches with mustard gas,
It comes in yellow squeeze dispensers labelled French's Old Fashioned.
Mustard: the other ketchup
acting on orders from white-nationalist leader William Pierce.
Pierce at it again? Better call Raisin, asap.
The ONG team discovered biological weapons being produced in the school, requiring activation of containment and decontamination procedures.
Stripping down, showering, de-lice dusting, trading skivvies.
Participants in the disaster drill located NEA documents expressing the school employees' "anti-government" sentiments, as well as a note identifying Pierce as the sixty something white male, fictional right-wing terrorists' leader
and Tea Party member.
They don't feel stoopid like we do.

#2  Are the troops truly clueless, or is it just an exercise scenario to please the president and his claque? Because we've got some national guards people here, and they never struck me as unaware of the war they've been fighting.

#3  As an emergency response arm of the State Governors, National Guard units have what used to be referred to as a local or state "Civil Defense mission." I'll go out on a bit of a limb and say few at the federal level ever paid much attention to the State National Guard civil defense mission prior to 9/11.

After 9/11 and with the advent of the Federal Homeland Security, the former Civil Defense role of the National Guard has morphed into a "Civil Support" collaboration with other federal agencies. With the new federal emphasis and mission comes increased visibility, money, equipment, and resources.

Computer modeling and simulation has been around for 20 years or more. These exercises are undoubtedly computer generated, highly sophisticated canned scenarios containing human behavior focused Master Scenario Events Lists [MSEL] as opposed to traditional events such as weather related floods, or natural disaster. The 'take away' for player is the agency interaction, communication, and pecking order, not the neutralization of 'Bubba' the Bible thumping terrorist.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say there was a Federal Agency exercise controller and multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement, Homeland Security, and possibly FEMA players. I would be very surprised if the Governor of Ohio or anyone from his office had knowledge of this event or attended.

Big gov't, federal control, funding, and human behavior focused computer generated events, I doubt any further explanation is required. Did I mention federal control ?

#4  Forty years ago, give or take, the copshop drills usually involved a deranged Vietnam vet.
Turned out I had had a class back in the day from the shrink who advised on one in our state. Called him and asked about it.
Takeaway was that this guy--professor and supposedly knowledgeable about such things--hired for his specific knowledge had never thought about it.
It was so obvious, so much in the air, so many people had done the same thing in drills that it never occurred to him to wonder if it had ever happened in real life. Never wondered, never checked.
Besoeker's info is useful, but it does not address the issue of the choice, from among any number of possiblities. Could have been m....m....martians. Occupy Wall Street types. Muslims. Organized crime willing to stop doing it for a price.
They had a choice and they made it. They picked one group and didn't pick others.
That has to mean something because, as a friend used to say, it can't mean nothing.

Consider the feds got away with Waco and Ruby Ridge because they and a willing msm and chattering class had othered the victims.

#6  Besoeker's info is useful, but it does not address the issue of the choice, from among any number of possiblities.

My apologies...addendum follows:

A while back there was a home security system that was featured in teevee adverts. It depicted a mother and young daughter reacting to a burglar breaking into their house. The mother and daughter rushed upstairs to call the home security company, who told them.... "Help Is On The Way."

As the home security system siren went off, the startled burglar bolted from the residence. Do you remember the gender and race of the evil burglar? That's right, he looked like an approaching middle age, Eddie Haskell. He looked that way for a reason.
Posted by: Besoeker || 02/11/2014 7:22 Comments || Top||

#7  That's a weird story! The left-wing goes after their boogey man the right wing. I'm surprised they didn't lump the Tea Party and returning vets into their fictional childish under-the-bed threat. Categorize into "looney."

"As the home security system siren went off, the startled burglar bolted from the residence. Do you remember the gender and race of the evil burglar? That's right, he looked like an approaching middle age, Eddie Haskell. He looked that way for a reason. "

Precisely. There's always a reason. Sometimes you want to appeal to your target market. Advertising is aspirational, usually. See the Budweiser ads. Young adults having a hell of a lot of good, clean fun. Associated with Bud.
Really good-looking people with aristocratic bone structure advertising, say, Lexus.
Young men in sloppy clothes, unshaven and looking as if they haven't washed in a week for pizza to be delivered for the Big Game on television.

As you point out, though, there are all the ones not chosen. PC, for the security system.

So why did the ONG NOT choose the others? PC? Easily offended? The producer of the old Cagney and Lacey show, asked why rich, white businessmen were always the bad guys responded they're the only group which doesn't complain.

All very well, but see othering. Tea Party is racist and violent. Bitter clingers. Gun nuts. Eventually, if ordinary citizens find themselves in trouble with the so-called Law, they'll be in a position to garner as much sympathy as the Branch Davidians did. Which, I submit, is the point.

#13  Imagine the outrage if it was the black panthers or environmental terrorists. Desensitizing the guard to the believers in the Constitution is the first step. I'm sure the leadership is telling the troops its no big deal, we had to pick something. But lets play this forward 3 years, Hillary is in office and a bomb goes off at Skidmark's Kent State. Hillary reacts like she did at Bengazi and says it was those radical right wing Tea part vets. And her staff goes on to tell the public to be calm we have been training for the last few years because we knew they were a threat. They go on to begin raids on folks with large amounts of registered weapons in that state, in the name of public safety and the investigation. A number of them fight back and she has effectively turned every conservative that believes in the 2nd amendment into a criminal.
Five years ago the folks here at Rantburg would have laughed me off the site for this, it is still far fetched. But now, blaming it on the right is much less of a reach than blaming the prono on Bengazi. And we know our administration has no remorse for lying to the American people.

"What difference does it make"...

#16  49Pan.

THis is happening in France. A few months ago a small group of skin heads (three males and two girls) were at a private cloth sale. An all male roup of eight far left want to wait for theml in front of the store, threatening to beat them to a pulp as soon as the skins left the store. Then when the skins required the intervention of the store's security people feigned to dsperse. But it was trick, they jumped on the skins. One of the leftists, a student in one of the more elistis schols in France but also a never do good who had a large ring as a makeshift brass knucle struck one of the skins in the back. The skin, a strong man and son of a construction worker turned around and struck him on the face. the leftits bourgeois fell, hois head hit the ground and he died. No knives, no brass knuckle by the skin head no trampling by the skin, nothing more than hitting back after the other had sneaked behind his back and hit him. Well, socialist governement went amok, dissolved the skin head group (nothing against the self appointed anti-fascist group) , the left press made big covers about the "fascist danger", made a hero from the little treacherous weasel and the skin head has been charged of murder and is still in jail awaiting trial.

Still, they should have made it more obvious, such as Amish bio-terrorists or the Stonecutters or seomthing if that's the case.

#22  Because the strip naked paint yourself blue and yell like maniacs occupy technique was solved 2060 years ago?

I think the real crime here is just how stupid this scenario is. Because they would poison the food with mustard gas (is that possible?) before completing the bio weapons...who writes this shit? Was he sitting there at de-con supervising, pencil in mouth? It accurately predicts an episode of first 24 after a liter of crap vodka.

I mean com'on...all these dudes waddling around in hazmat suits on scba looking for signs of that bastard arch villain who hurt kids and ruined your weekend off and you find...some dude with a mashup of William Wallace and pierce morgan? WTH? If this is the level of creative plot dynamic we can achieve then the terrorists have won and we don't even know it yet. How about the villain be named Kahn? Or some nutjob photo of a woman in drag with dreads and tea bags dangling from her ears? That would be memorable. And how could they tell a bio weapon from what normally occurs in a Junior High? No the only thing this scenario predicts of real life is huge tax payer wasted money allowance, wasted time, and the only thing learned was how to get a grant approved.

(I thought the Red/Blue/Green fight over Ronvadia or whatnot was to not really provoke anyone.)
Posted by: swksvolFF || 02/11/2014 19:12 Comments || Top||

#23  Nice little stupid scenario you got there, ONG. There are mobs and there are ooda loops. Good riot police and troops can get into your home grown militias. Not so much with educated and trained guerrilla warfare.

If you know how infrastructure works in this society, you will know that our civilization and its govt are very vulnerable to the threats to stability and continuity by failures of some very critical nodes in our infrastructure, as seen recently in California.

Cities need water, food, electricity, and transportation to function. A loss of, say, potable water to a city would be a huge disaster compared to 9-11. A large city of millions would cease to function after less than a week.

The drill conducted in the story was a bunch of bull$h#t busy work.

South Sudan Rebels Threaten to Stall Peace Talks
[An Nahar] South Sudan rebels on Monday threatened to stall peace talks aimed at ending nearly two months of fighting, demanding the release of detainees and the withdrawal of foreign troops as officials said a new round had been postponed. The talks between South Sudan's government and the rebels that were due to open in Ethiopia are aimed at building on a shaky ceasefire agreement and bringing about a comprehensive and durable solution by addressing the root causes of the conflict. "The talks are not resuming today," South Sudan government spokesman Michael Makuei told Agence France Presse, without explaining the delay. A government official from host country Ethiopia confirmed the postponement. Makuei said the talks were now set to begin on Tuesday afternoon.

Bangladesh
Jubo League cadre killed in 'gunfight'
[Bangla Daily Star] A Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
man was killed in a "shootout" between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion in Barisal city yesterday.

The dead, Faruq Ahmed alias Panama Faruq, 46, was son of Yaqub Ali Mia of Bazar Road area.
A four namer, the son of a three namer? Call the IRS, these people are rich!
He was a listed criminal and accused in over one dozen systems cases for murder, extortion, grabbing public and private properties and other criminal activities, said Sakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Can even a mother love a man like that?
Nizamul Islam Nizam, convener of Barisal city Jubo League, said Faruq was an active member of the unit but did not hold any post.
They got a vacancy now, too...
Rab-8 sources said a patrol team in Chawak Bazar area tried to intercept a group of people around 6:30am, seeing their suspicious movement.
Cheez, that was right around shift change. No wonder the RAB didn't just pinch Faruq for a subsequent cross-fire...
Instead of halting, the people started firing, triggering a shootout with the Rab members, the sources added.
Lots of aimless fire except for the round that caught Faruq, which was carefully aimed indeed...
Faruq was caught in the line of fire at one stage and was struck down in his prime, said Lt Colonel Gulzar, in charge of media wing at Rab-8.

Others managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...

Several firearms including two pistols and a pipe gun, bullets, and three sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, Gulzar added.
No shutter gun for Faruq...
The body was sent to Barisal Medical College and Hospital
...not a level I trauma center, not that Faruq needed that...
for his appointment with Doctor Quincy.

Police said Faruq was sent to jail after he surrendered before a court in 2009.

After release from jail, he started grabbing public and private properties in the city's commercial areas, police mentioned.
Clearly he wanted to go back. Some people are like that.
However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
Faruq's father demanded justice against the "killing" of his son without trial.

Faruq was known as "Panama Faruq" for his family business titled Panama Traders.
Is that like Banana Republic?
He and his younger brother Mahbubur Rahman Chhokku formed a gang named Panama Bahini around 1998, creating a reign of terror in the city under the banner of Jubo League.
So the family business wasn't clothing...
The gang attacked Barisal Press Club in 1999.

The duo went into hiding after the BNP-led alliance government came to power in 2001.
So they were AL bully boys...
Faruq returned to the city from his lair hideout after the AL-led government assumed power in 2008 and got bail from the court in most of his cases.

He was defeated as a councillor candidate in last Barisal City Corporation election.
And he's not running again!

Caribbean-Latin America
Toyota to temporarily halt production in Venezuela
Toyota said on Friday it would soon halt production at its only assembly plant in Venezuela because the world's largest automaker lacks hard currency to import parts due to government controls.

The temporary shutdown of the Japanese car maker's operations in the western city of Cumana is due to begin February 13 and last at least six weeks.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro says he wants to speak to Toyota's top official for Latin America after the carmaker said it would stop production in the South American nation.

"I have already directed Industry Minister (Wilmer Barrientos) to call in the head of Toyota for Latin America, or have somebody come from Japan," Maduro said in an address on state television.

The plant produced nearly 9,500 vehicles in 2013. Last year, 72,000 vehicles were made in Venezuela, down more than 30 per cent from 2012.

Companies such as Toyota must go through a complex bureaucratic process to obtain dollars.

Venezuela is only providing dollars at the official rate of 6.3 bolivars to the dollar to importers of designated priority goods such as food and medical supplies. Others who need dollars to pay overseas bills have to buy them at a higher rate at government-run auctions. Many companies have complained Caracas is not providing them with enough hard currency.

The currency controls have led to shortages of a wide range of basic necessities, and fuelled an inflation rate that reached 56.2 per cent last year.

#1  And how long is "temporary"?

My guess is till after Madcow croaks it.

#2  Next: nationalize the assembly line. (The parts still have to come from China and Korea, so that'll work for about 3 days.)

#3  A story appeared on Feb. 5th, 2014 stating: Toyota also upped its forecast for the end of fiscal year 2013 (which ends on March 31 for Japan), to a record 1.9-trillion yen (about $18.8 billion). Now, the Japanese brand is reportedly sitting on a cash pile of nearly $40 billion, leaving Toyoda-san in an envious predicament – what should the company do with all that money? Toyota has cash reserves it appears it is a hassle to get any of them into Venezuela without their government applying the "Chicago Way" to fund coming in. Story here

#6  Far be it from me to tell Toyota how to do business but Venezuela? Really? Even if I had a plant in every Latin American country I'd probably skip Venezuela.
Posted by: rjschwarz || 02/11/2014 14:53 Comments || Top||

#7  I'm thinking they are in fact skipping Venezuela. Toyota has the cash reserves to do what they want. It looks like it is just getting too difficult to manufacture there. How does a company ease out of this pain-in-the butt-country but still sell cars there?(Rhetorical question).
Posted by: JohnQC || 02/11/2014 16:21 Comments || Top||

#8  JQC it's impossible.
Dollars are needed to import parts to assemble the cars, the rate you see today might not be the rate you see tomorrow. And the government is allowed to decided which rate you get. Massive losses can be incurred if you are not incubated from the terror of the Cadivi.

Jesse Jackson says ready to go to North Korea for prisoner
[Straits Times] United States (US) civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said on Monday he was ready to meet North Korea's leader to free an imprisoned American and reduce ill-will between the two countries.
Trade even up? Sounds good.
US officials have said that Jackson volunteered to travel to Pyongyang after the totalitarian state abruptly canceled the visit of a US envoy, Robert King, who aimed to free Korean-American tour operator Kenneth Bae.

Jackson said in a televised interview with CNN that he had put "high hopes" in King, but after the trip was called off, wrote a letter to North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
.

Mr Jackson said he told Mr Kim he would "like to meet with him face-to-face to seek to work out some mutual respect, some recognising each other's illusory sovereignty, each other's will to peace".

China: U.S. comments on South China Sea 'not constructive'
China has accused the United States of undermining peace and development in the Asia-Pacific after a senior U.S. official said concern was mounting over China's claims in the South China Sea.

"These actions are not constructive", Hong Lei, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, said in a statement issued late on Saturday.

"We urge the U.S. to hold a rational and fair attitude, so as to have a constructive role in the peace and development of the region, and not the opposite," Lei said.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Danny Russel told a congressional testimony on Wednesday the United States had "growing concerns" that China's maritime claims were an effort to gain creeping control of oceans in the region. China's claims had "created uncertainty, insecurity and instability", Russel said.

China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all claim parts of the sea that provides 10 percent of global fish catches and carries $5 trillion in ship-borne trade.

China also railed against what it called "outrageous" comments on Friday by Philippine President Benigno Aquino, who compared the maritime dispute with appeasement of Nazi Germany before World War Two.

China claims about 90 percent of the 3.5 million square km (1.35 million square miles) South China Sea, depicting what it sees as its area on maps with a so-called nine-dash line, looping far out over the sea from south China.

Turkey Court Dismisses Charges against Main Protest Group
[An Nahar] A Turkish court on Monday dismissed charges against members of the main activist group behind last year's nationwide anti-government protests.

The 26 members of the Taksim Solidarity Platform each faced up to 29 years in prison on charges including founding a crime syndicate, violating public order and organizing illegal protests through social media.

The group includes prominent civil society figures and was the leading organization behind last June's protests that left six people dead.

But the court rejected the six-page indictment prepared by the Istanbul prosecutor's office, saying it was unclear which laws the suspects had violated, Radikal newspaper reported.

"It should be explained how some of the suspects founded and controlled an organization to commit which crimes, under which law, so as to permit them to defend themselves," the court was quoted as saying.

Among the suspects was Mucella Yapici, head of the Chamber of Architects and Engineers, who met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet...
at the height of the unrest to discuss the protesters' demands.

Last month, Turkish prosecutors charged another group of 36 protesters with terrorism, and demanded prison terms ranging up to 58 years.

The June protests started as a small environmentalist movement to save Istanbul's Gezi Park from redevelopment and snowballed into a nationwide wave of protests against Erdogan, who is accused of increasing authoritarianism.

Man throws acid on estranged wife, in-laws
[DAWN] Four members of a family suffered acid burns when a man targeted his estranged wife and his in-laws in a locality of Ravi Road on Sunday.

The suspect, who allegedly attacked his wife and in-laws following a matrimonial dispute, expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

The chief minister, taking notice of yet another incident of acid throwing, ordered police to take stern action against the suspect.

Earlier, two motorcyclists had thrown acid on a private university's lecturer at her doorstep near College Road, Township, in the last week of January.

Police have yet to arrest the main suspect who is said to be a former class-fellow of the victim. She was going to be married soon.

About the Sunday's incident, Ravi Road circle DSP Atif Hayyat said preliminary investigations showed the suspect, Nasir, threw acid on his wife and a minor child during a visit to his in-laws in Shamaspura.

The suspect's brother-in-law and his wife, who were present there, also came under the attack.

The DSP said Nasir apparently resorted to acid attack on refusal of his estranged wife to return to his house.

He said Sakina, her one-year-old son Ibrahim, her brother Shaukat Ali and Ali's wife Rasheeda suffered acid burns and were immediately transported to Mayo Hospital where they were said to be stable.

Sabzadi Mandi police check post in-charge Muhammad Hussain Bhati said Nasir was a drug addict and his wife had filed a divorce suit in a court a few days ago.

He said Nasir, a father of three, would allegedly force his wife to earn money through prostitution. Hearing of the divorce case was on February 16, he added.

He said Sakina suffered severe burns but was out of danger. The police have started the paperwork but haven't done much else under hurt and terrorism charges against the runaway suspect and were conducting raids for his arrest.

Advisor to the chief minister on health Khawaja Salman Rafique and PML-N MPA Ghazali Saleem Butt inquired after the injured at the hospital.

Manufacturers Change Look of AR-15; Rifle Is Now Legal in New York State
Pass a stupid law, get a stupid result. When the opponents of "assault weapon" bans argue that it is preposterous for the state to ban firearms based on the way they look, they really mean it. It is. The rifle in the photograph above is no more or less powerful than the one that has been banned; it just looks different. And, because the SAFE Act was, typically, interested only in cosmetic questions, a simple change to its aesthetic rendered the rifle legal once more. As Clash Daily's Jonathan S. explains:

Prototypes for the newly designed AR-15 are hitting gun shops across New York, as gun shops and machinists have designed a rifle that complies with the anti-gun law. At least one gun shop has received a letter from state police saying that the new AR-15 style rifles should be legal in the state as long as they don't have some of the features that the law prohibits.

The new gun law bans all kinds of semi-automatic rifles that have been labeled with the "assault" term even though these are very common rifles and are no more powerful than the average hunting rifle.

Features like adjustable stocks, pistols grips, and flash suppressors has been deemed to be unlawful on these rifles, mainly because it makes them LOOK mean. And we all know how little these anti-gun lawmakers really know about guns, as the "Ghost gun" video illustrated.

The new AR-15 design did away with the pistol grip which gives the gun an odd paintball gun look. The stock is fixed as well, but at least New Yorkers now have a legal way to own an AR-15, a fact which is still driving some gun control activists mad.

Reading this story, one would almost conclude that legislation that deals only with the superficial and the irrelevant is inherently silly. Curious.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).
BraaawHaaaaaaaw. Sometimes I love unintended consequences. This is a twofor. American ingenuity exerts itself. People are fleeing New York. New York will lose tax money. There won't be as much money to continue such nitwittery.

Well they are. Some 380 people were killed by rifles/assault guns in 2011 while over 750 people were killed with hands and feet the same year.

Obviously hands and feet are more deadly and people must register them or have them removed.
