Illinois mom receives taunting texts from murdered child's phone
[NYDAILYNEWS] Just one day after her 14-year-old daughter's brutal murder, the dead teen's face popped up on an Illinois mom's phone.

It was a call from her beloved child's stolen cell, one of several phone calls and taunting texts that Brenda O'Laughlin testified she received after coming home in Oct. 2011 to find her daughter Kelli lying in a pool of blood.

After Brenda took to the witness stand on Wednesday at the trial for John Wilson Jr., the lead suspect, ABC Chicago reported on how she answered that first call from Kelli's killer.

Australian hospital accidentally declares 200 patients dead
[Bangla Daily Star] An Australian hospital apologised on Thursday after mistakenly sending out death notices for 200 of its - very much alive - patients.
A-w-k-ward!
Austin Hospital, in Australia's second most populous city of Melbourne, erroneously killed off the patients when it faxed death notices to their family doctors.
"Jones? Dead? Impossible! I'm on the phone with him right now!"
"Is he saying anything?"

The notices were the result of an inadvertent change to the templates the hospital sends to doctors once a patient has been discharged, operator Austin Health said in a statement.
IF THE PATIENT IS CONTAGIOUS CLICK "C"
IF THE PATIENT HAS BEEN DISCHARGED CLICK "D"
IF THE PATIENT IS DEAD CLICK "D"
IF THE PATIENT IS EPILEPTIC CLICK "E"

"We apologised unreservedly to affected clinics who, for the most part, were very understanding about the error," it said.
"No worries, mate! Happens all the time!"
Patient care had not been affected, the company stressed.
"Evelyn, have you seen the embalming fluid for Mrs. Jones?"
The Australian Medical Association said the error was unacceptable and potentially distressing to family doctors,
... not to mention the "dead" people...
while an opposition lawmaker said it was symptomatic of an overworked health system.
Which his party was in charge of and designed...

Chicago actress killed by falling tree
[Chicago Tribune] Longtime reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
theater actress Molly Glynn died Saturday after being hit by a tree while bicycling on a north suburban forest preserve trail, officials said.
Coincidence or pattern? Yesterday a gargoyle, today a tree. What will fall upon whom tomorrow in Chicago?
I'm staying in bed tomorrow...
Hospital spokeswoman Colette Urban confirmed at about 1:15 p.m. that Glynn died Saturday afternoon.

Glynn, 46, had been riding her bike Friday with husband, fellow theater actor Joe Foust, when the pair were caught in the fast-moving afternoon storm, sources said. Glynn was on her bike when heavy winds blew in and uprooted a tree directly onto the path where she was riding, hitting her.

Burqini hits Algeria beaches
[MAGHAREBIA] The hijab swimsuit, or burqini, caused a stir on Algerian beaches this summer, with bathers divided over the new style.

Veiled women who had previously been unable to enjoy the sea welcomed the bathing suit. But other Algerians argue that the heavy, two-piece outfit defeats the purpose of sunbathing and swimming.

Made up of synthetic pants elasticated around the waist and ankles, and a long tunic split at the sides, the burqini originated in Turkey. It has since spread through Africa, the Middle East, even Europe and the US. Islamic swimsuits are now made by major sports brands.

Detroit Satanists say they won't sacrifice animals, people
[FREEP] A new religious group aims to bring the devil to Detroit.
Got their names in the papers, anyway. Now you can forget about them.
The Satanic Temple today marks the launch of its first chapter outside New York. But leaders say they don't worship Satan. They don't practice cannibalism, or sacrifice people or animals.

"It's peaceful," said Jex Blackmore, 32, local leader and part of the temple's executive ministry. "The idea of sacrifice specifically is to appease some demon or some god, and that's a supernatural belief that we don't subscribe to."

'Brain-eating amoeba' claims another life
[DAWN] Tests of a teenager who died 10 days ago confirmed on Friday that he had fallen prey to Naegleria fowleri, better known as 'brain-eating amoeba', raising its corpse count this year to 10 in Sindh and nine in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...

What caused alarm to the provincial health administration was that a 50-year-old man was also admitted to hospital in Nawabshah on Friday with somewhat similar symptoms.

Nigerian Tourist Unlikely To Have Ebola, Doctors Say
Saved by the bell, this time.
[IsraelTimes] Nigerian woman who was placed in quarantine Friday after arriving in Israel with high fever is unlikely to have contracted Ebola, Israeli health officials said Saturday.

Prof. Jonathan Halevi, the director of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center where the woman is being examined, told Haaretz that chances of the 28-year-old carrying the virus were extremely slim.

Initial blood tests had shown the infection to be bacterial and not viral, he said, but were sent for a second test in order to make sure. Final results were expected later in the day.

Initial blood tests had shown the infection to be bacterial and not viral, he said, but were sent for a second test in order to make sure. Final results were expected later in the day.
Other health officials added that the woman -- who worked in Nigeria's public health system and had come in contact with patients at local hospitals -- had not been in contact with at-risk populations for the past month. If she had contracted the deadly virus a month ago, they said, the disease would have been much more advanced than her symptoms indicated.

The woman, a tourist who arrived in Israel on Wednesday, admitted herself to the hospital suffering from high fever.

The Ebola epidemic, which emerged in Guinea at the start of the year before spreading to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, is the worst outbreak since the hemorrhagic fever was first identified in 1976. More than 3,000 people appear to have been infected, and 1,552 have died, according to the latest World Health Organization figures.

Last month, the Foreign Ministry published a warning urging Israelis against travel to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

#1  I have continued to add up the WHO figures

The WHO with a $4.27 billion budget used to upload new infection and new death figures in bulletins every 2-4 days.

The last figures were from August 20. they haven't done one of those updates for 3 weeks now

So i subtracted the old total from the new total to keep my count going. It is only to August 27.

Great standardisation of reporting from WHO. Just what you'd expect from a well-funded global organisation of expert scientists...

dates...........new infected.....new dead
August 15-27.......898............363
(senegal infected)
August 1-15........663............331
(DRC infected)
July 15-31.........423............146
(Nigeria infected)
July 1-15..........285............139
June 15-30..........81.............41
June 1-15...........84.............28
May 15-31..........133.............44
May 1 – 15..........12..............9

#2  i wish i could just reprint the table so it was neat. But the mathematicians among you will note it is a roughly 150% increase in infections every 2 weeks

project that out and you get an infection rate of 1 million a month in less than a year

Posted by: anon1 || 09/07/2014 9:08 Comments || Top||

#3  I made a similar calculation and came up with a doubling every 30 days approx.

With an incubation period of 20 days and another 10 days to death or resolution that means onward infection rate is around 2. Similar to flu epidemics. And even with vaccines, how successful have we have been in stopping spread of the flu?

I'm waiting to see if we get a significant outbreak outside tropical Africa. Libya? Egypt?

Venezuela Set To Import Oil
Subtitled: How to wreck your country.
The management acumen of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro continues to amaze. Reuters:
Algeria is in talks to export crude oil to fellow OPEC member Venezuela, Algerian Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi said on Tuesday, confirming a Reuters report.

Last week, a document from Venezuela's state-run energy company PDVSA seen by Reuters showed Venezuela was considering importing crude oil for the first time and could use Algerian light crude as blending stock to boost sales of its own extra-heavy oil.

"Yes, we are in talks," Yousfi told Reuters when asked whether Algeria was planning to export crude oil to Venezuela. He declined to provide details.
More details come care of the Miami Herald:
It turns out that Venezuela's own production of light crudes has plummeted since the late President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999, and the country desperately needs light crudes to blend with its Orinoco Basin extra heavy crude oils. Without such a blend, the Orinoco Basin's extra heavy crude is too dense to be transported through pipelines to Venezuelan ports and exported abroad.

Venezuela's oil production, which accounts for 95 percent of the country's export earnings, should be used in world classrooms as a textbook case of what happens when a populist government starts distributing a country's wealth in cash subsidies, without investing in maintenance and innovation. Much like happened with Cuba's once flourishing sugar industry, Venezuela's Chávez-inspired populism has destroyed the goose that laid the golden eggs.

In 1999, when Chávez took office, PDVSA had 51,000 employees and produced 63 barrels of crude a day per employee. Fifteen years later, PDVSA had 140,000 employees, and produced 20 barrels of crude a day per employee, according to an Aug. 14 report by the France Press news agency.

Venezuela's net oil exports have plummeted from 3.1 million barrels a day in 1997 to 1.7 million barrels a day in 2013, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates.
There was a popular riddle bandied about the Soviet Union back in communist days that went something like this: Question: if the Soviet Union conquered the Sahara, what would happen? Answer: nothing for 50 years, then a shortage of sand.

Well, it certainly didn't take Venezuela 50 years to develop a shortage of oil under the inspired economic leadership of the socialist apparatchiks who have wrecked the economy in the name of helping the poor.
Of course, we're not supposed to talk about which countries these apparatchiks are benefitting, but here's a reminder:e China resells $ 5/bbl oil from Venezuela on the international market. I've mentioned it before.

Artillery fire continues in Donetsk despite truce

The ceasefire agreement in place since 1800 hrs Friday has been broken, with both artillery and small arms fire reported, according to pro Russian media.

Ukrainian artillery has been firing continually in and near Donetsk for the past ten days, and though it has reportedly been diminished, the fire missions continue.

According to the pro Russian Voice of Sevastopol news outlet, artillery strikes hit the city of Donetsk in both residential and industrial areas Friday.

Artillery hit Makeyevka Volnovakha, Budyonovka and Petrovsky districts throughout Friday until the 1800 ceasefire went into effect. Two of these districts, Petrovsky and Makevka, were the targets of Ukrainian artillery since at least mid-August.

After 1800 hrs, Ukrainian artillery struck the Petrovsky and Makevka districts.

Until Friday at least some of the artillery fire was coming from near the airport in the north, but militia units reported that Ukrainian units have been pushed away from the area. However, conflicting reports from militia say some Ukrainian units remain.

For their part, pro Russian militia were shelling parts of Donetsk Friday against Ukrainian military targets. Militia artillery hit the Spartak state farm.

Pro Russian media reported that five civilians were killed Thursday by Ukrainian artllery in Petrovsky, Kuibyshevsky and Kievsky districts.

Both sides in the conflict have used the time just before and during the ceasefire to reinforce their positions, especially around Mariupol, areas still contested just a few kilometers north of Mariupol and between Donetsk and Lugansk where pro Ruussian militia are trying to liquidate Ukrainian troops trapped near Ilovaisk for the last 10 days.

Pro Russian militia have pointed out that Ukrainian police units vowed to continue fighting despite the ceasefire.

Failed coup in Donetsk

Russian language press is reporting that an attempted coup took place in Donetsk three days ago.

A news item posted on ru-fects.com says that a deputy prime minister identified as Vladimir Akinfeev tried to give orders to other officials while top Donetsk officials were in Minsk earlier in the week hammering out a ceasefire agreement.

The Donetsk Minister of Public Security DNR Leonid Baranov said that Akinfeev tried to have key officials removed from office, but his orders were disobeyed.

Baranov said Akinfeev have been detained and will face charges in court.

Akinfeev is said to be a pro Moscow politician.

Cease-Fire In Ukraine Appears To Hold
[Ynet] A cease-fire in Ukraine's rebellious east appeared to be holding on Saturday, but claims by a pro-Russian separatist leader that the Ukrainian side had violated the agreement showed that the fragile deal could quickly unravel.

National Guard Commander Stepan Poltorak was quoted by the Interfax news agency Saturday as saying that although some shooting took place up to about 45 minutes after the cease-fire, "as of this morning there haven't been any violations, either from our side, of course, or from the terrorists."

#1  I can remember reading similar (VERY similar!) articles like this last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. Lots of talk about responding, but nothing about alleviating the problem. Typical In'sAllah behavior. I have no more sympathy. The needle not only has pegged on empty, it bent.

#2  Seasonal monsoon rains and flooding are unprecedented in this part of the world. And by 'unprecedented', I mean happens regularly on an annual basis since pretty much the beginning of time. Or at least since Gondwanaland broke up.

You would think someone would have noticed by now and maybe dug some ditches.

Home Front: Culture Wars
C. David Heymann's Lies
Another book exposed as a fraud.

From TFA:

In May 2012, Heymann fell dead in the lobby of his New York City apartment building, but that presented no problem for his publisher, according to Emily Bestler, who edited his last four books. She told Newsweek during a phone conversation in July that Heymann was “a true professional” who “finished the book before he died.” Still, Bestler said, she paid to have the book thoroughly fact-checked just to make sure all was in order. Nothing troubling turned up, she told me, not even a misspelled name.

Bestler's mood changed when I told her I wanted to discuss numerous fabrications Newsweek had uncovered in Joe and Marilyn. She cut me off in mid-sentence, shouting that such questions were improper because she had thought I was calling only to ask about the marketing of a book by a dead author. She then declared that “this is getting ugly” and hung up.

When Paul Olewski, a spokesman for CBS's Simon and Schuster publishing division, called me back, he was very polite but said he did not want to hear what Newsweek had found about any of the books by Heymann CBS had published, and that Bestler would not agree to an interview with Newsweek.

It's too bad CBS didn't want to hear more, because all the celebrity bios Heymann wrote for them and other publishers' "dealing with JFK, Bobby Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe'"are riddled with errors and fabrications. An exhaustive cataloging of those mistakes would fill a book, so a sampling from his long career will have to suffice.

#1  ...If there is any justice at all, there are legions of lawyers about to lay down truckloads of paper on Mr. Heymann's estate and the nice morons people at S&S.

Not Fact-Checking
I know: this is The Atlantic, except that this article exposes a dirty secret of book publishers regarding the truth of inside their product.

From TFA:

On the cover of her memoir, The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, Somaly Mam sits in a field, surrounded by laughing children. “I came to know Somaly Mam, who was enslaved herself but managed to escape and then became the Harriet Tubman of Southeast Asia's brothels, repeatedly rescuing those left behind,” New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote in the book's introduction. “As a local person with firsthand experience in the red-light districts, Somaly has a credibility and understanding that no outsider does.”

That was in 2009. This past spring, Simon Marks's Newsweek article on Mam charged the anti-sex trafficking activist with fabricating her past as a child prostitute. In the fallout, many readers faulted Kristof for lauding her as a heroine; others pointed fingers directly at Mam. Hardly any called out the publishing houses that distributed her book.

Mam's story gained a mass following with the release of her best-selling memoir, first published in France in 2005. The book's success helped the activist launch the Somaly Mam Foundation in 2007. Mam was also featured in Mariane Pearl's In Search of Hope that same year.

'Victims Can Lie as Much as Other People'
In a Politico post, Kristof cited the fact that Mam's story had been the subject of two published books as part of what made it so credible. Addressing the issue in the Times, he wrote, “We journalists often rely to a considerable extent on people to tell the truth, especially when they have written unchallenged autobiographies.”

There's a basic problem with this line of logic, though: Most books are never fact-checked.
