[IsraelTimes] Nearly 1,200 academics from universities and colleges across the world signed an online petition to oppose any boycott of Israel and its higher education institutions.
The petition was posted October 5 on the Faculty for Academic Freedom website and had been endorsed by 1,185 signatories at time of writing.
"We, the undersigned academics... vigorously support free speech and free debate but we oppose faculty or student boycotts of Israel's academic institutions, scholars and students," the petition states.
The statement accused BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) supporters of discriminating against Israeli institutions, professors, and students "for no other reason than their nationality and the policies of their government," and added that such a practice violated "the very principle of academic freedom."
According to the petition, the BDS supporters' position undermines the possibility of ever achieving a long-lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Paleostinians, as it completely isolated the Jewish state.
"The two-state solution ‐ which guarantees to both parties mutual recognition ‐ enjoys the endorsement of the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... , the United States, the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... , and the Arab League ...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing... ," the petition reads.
"By demonizing and seeking to isolate one of the two parties to the grinding of the peace processor, the anti-Israel BDS movement sets itself apart from the global consensus for peace."
The anti-BDS petition came in response to a statement posted on Oct. 1 on the website jadaliyya.com signed by more than 350 808 [as of Oct. 8] anthropologists which endorsed an academic boycott of Israel.
"As a community of scholars who study problems of power, oppression, and cultural hegemony, we have a moral responsibility to speak out and demand accountability from Israel and our own governments," read the statement, which endorsed "boycott[ing] Israeli academic institutions that are complicit in these violations."
Israeli academic institutions, the statement said, "are complicit with the occupation and oppression of Paleostinians" with "intimate connections between Israeli academic institutions and the military, security, and political establishments in Israel."
Among the signatories were 13 academics from the City University of New York and 13 from Columbia University. Nine co-signatories were listed as being from Harvard University and eight from Yale University.
DALLAS -- The Texas Department of State Health Services says negative results were returned from a lab in Austin Thursday, indicating that a Dallas County deputy who had fallen ill does not have the Ebola virus.
Dallas County's Sgt. Michael Monnig was taken from a Frisco CareNow clinic Wednesday afternoon to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas after he had some, but not all, symptoms of Ebola.
Just before 3 p.m. Thursday, state health officials announced that all results had come back negative for the virus.

[WAPO] Fearful of exposure to Ebola, about 200 of the people who clean airplane cabins walked off the job overnight at LaGuardia International Airport.
The walkout came a day after health and safety experts from the Service Employees International Union, which represents many unionized airport employees, raised concerns over whether cabin cleaners were being adequately protected.
“As a physician I know first-hand that it takes a team of people and proper protocols to safeguard against the spread of Ebola and other infectious diseases,” said L. Toni Lewis of the SEIU. “It’s people on the front line, like cabin cleaners, who are the first line of defense against protecting the general public from contamination. SEIU is proud to step up to provide this essential education and training.”
The union said its members need to be better prepared to deal with the threat.
“This workforce needs effective training – and it needs to happen now,” said Mark Catlin, also of the SEIU. “While employers – the contractors who hire airplane cabin cleaners – have primary responsibility for training their workers, SEIU is hosting tomorrow’s briefing to ensure our members are prepared. It’s imperative that a crisis situation won’t be the first time they’ve seen the required equipment.”

If this idea gets any traction, the whole US comm aviation system could be brought to a crawl, if not a stop.
For once I have to agree with this union; these cleaners do not have the training nor the protection, even if the risk is not 50%; and I cannot see management soiling their hands to clean the birds.
And pax would revolt if they were hustled onto a dirty plane trying to make the advertised turn around time.
I think this should be encouraged; might get somebody's attention.
Spain Isolates 4 More, Puts 52 Under Observation...
The infected nurse, partially named as 44-year old María Teresa, married but with no children, is in a stable condition in isolation at the Carlos III, where she was transferred in the early hours of the morning in a convoy of ambulances accompanied by police outriders.
The three most immediate cases are the infected nurse’s husband, an intensive care nurse who worked with her and a Spanish engineer just back from Nigeria. Diario Enfermero (Nursing Daily) spoke to healthcare workers and posted the photo that accompanies this article, widely shared on Spanish social media, of the botched “Ebola isolation measures” in the Alcorcón Hospital where the nurse was initially admitted, reporting that until the Ebola test came back positive: “staff were caring for her without any kind of protection” behind just a screen door: “she was like that for hours”.
“Before being admitted to Alcorcón, this nursing assistant went straight to the Carlos III Hospital, but they didn’t see her there, telling her to go to her reference hospital and that she would be sent back if she tested positive. She was going round in circles.”
Nurses and hospital porters told the newspaper that they had no idea of what the treatment protocol was supposed to be and that a strict control of those who had come into contact with the infected nurse was not being carried out: “They’ve just gone home, that’s it. They have only told them to take their own temperature. We are mad”.

No, grom, this deputy was a guy that usually works for the JP's (Justice of the Peace) office serving papers, i.e. writs, summons, notice to appear, etc.
He gets paper to be served at the precinct courthouse from the clerks, takes it to whoever, and says "you have been served." The only people who know how many duty stops he's made will be the court, and that will have to be tracked by his paperwork. Then there's the matter of the court clerk's office...

And the fact the urgent-care center he went to is in Bobby's home town. But he only had some of the reference symptoms. On the other hand, he was not one of those identified for further observation - 48 individuals, I think - who had "contact" with (recently deceased) Thomas Duncan.

In Dallas, Deputies sit on the service road on Stemmons Freeway and other freeways, race up the entrance ramps and ticket speeders. The Dallas County Sheriffs Department.
They use these high speed interceptors for that.
They also work calls along side the Dallas Police. That is why he was in the apartment. They are in full contact with people all day long. Question is, was he in quarantine?

In other words, serving papers is just one of their jobs. He was serving papers at Duncan's apartment. However, the rest of the day he could be heading over to a freeway a few blocks over to radar for speeders.

Before he died, Patient Zero denied he had knowingly contacted a Liberian Ebola patient before he traveled to the USA. Dallas Morning News:
Some authorities have accused Duncan of hiding his attempt to help to a pregnant woman dying of Ebola, just days before he left Liberia. But Duncan mistook the woman’s symptoms for a miscarriage, [family friend Saymendy Lloyd] said.
The clinic Duncan brought her to may have missed the symptoms too. “She did not have diarrhea, was not torn up, was not bleeding from anywhere,” Lloyd said. “The doctors took blood samples from her and told her she could go.”
The woman was buried with a standard funeral — not cremated, as Duncan’s remains will be. By the time her blood tests revealed Ebola, Duncan was hospitalized in Dallas, Lloyd said.
[Tolo News] The five convicted Paghman rapists and infamous kidnapping ringleader Habib Astalif were executed by hanging at Pol-e-Charkhi prison on Wednesday.
The five Paghman men were put to death after being convicted for robbery and the kidnapping and rape of four women last month. Their case caused outrage around the country, and calls for their execution eventually came all the way from the Presidential Palace. Three additional suspects are still at-large.
The other criminal put to death once topped the country's most wanted list. Habibullah Estalifi was convicted of multiple counts of armed robbery, kidnapping and murder.

[Dhaka Tribune] Miscreants have vandalised at least four idols of Hindu goddess Durga at two separate Puja Mondops at Doba village in Khulna's Rupsha upzila.
During the attack on early Monday, at least seven people sustained injuries, while 10 shops were vandalised and two houses also looted.
The injured are Sujit Kumar Bagchi, 28, Sujit Kumar Basu, 27,Chayan Dash, 24, Sagor Odhikari, 21, Biplob Kumar Sarder, 28,Amit Kumar Bishwas, 27, and Amit Kumar Majumdar, 28.
Witnesses said a group of miscreants led by one Sohag Mollah attacked the Mondops at midnight and vandalised the idols following an altercation over seating arrangements at a cultural programme.
According to locals, the tension was sparked when some Moslem youths from the neighbouring Anandanagar village entered a cultural programme marking Durga Puja and tried to take the seats that were reserved for women. Following a verbal altercation with youths of Doba village, the Anandanagar residents returned to their own village and used loudspeakers of a local mosque to spread rumours that Hindu youths had assaulted Moslem youths in Doba village.
Hearing the rumours, Anandanagar residents ‐ equipped with local weapons ‐ vandalised four idols at the Sarbojonin Puja Mondop as well as attacking a nearby temple. They also looted and caused damages to four shops and two houses in the vicinity.
To prevent further attack, members of the local Hindu community also armed themselves with locally made weapons. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.
On Monday evening, an arbitration was arranged between ten representatives each from the villages of Anandanagar and Doba, while local administration officials and politicians were also present. The meeting assessed the extent of damages and a decision was reached for compensating the victims.

[ABNA.IR] A man has been refused bail after pleading not guilty to verbally attacking two Moslem women as they drove through Newcastle, north of Sydney.
Scott Papworth, 27, is accused of yelling abuse about Islam and punching a side-view mirror as a woman, 26, and her mother sat in a car in the city about 7:00pm (AEDT) last night.
Police say Papworth followed the pair as they drove away and continued the abuse after they pulled over to fix the car's mirror.
Papworth is also accused of punching a man who tried to help the women, and stealing mobile phones from two people who intervened, before being apprehended by members of the public.
In Newcastle Local Court this afternoon, Papworth pleaded not guilty "Wudn't me." to two counts of intimidation, two counts of larceny, one count of assault and one count of malicious damage.
Police prosecutor Karl Moir told the court it was "a racially provoked attack on innocent people" and the allegations were very serious given the "present climate" relating to Islam in Australia.
Magistrate Ian Cheetham refused bail, saying Papworth was already on bail for other matters, the alleged comments were racially offensive and his release would pose an unacceptable risk to the victims and the community.

There is considerable institutional abuse built into the Islamic religion.
The ultimate in a abuse occurred in Oklahoma when a jihadist beheaded an innocent woman at a factory.

The overall death rate has dropped sharply since the ceasefire began, according to the latest monthly report by the nine international monitors and 24 support staff sent in March to the former Soviet republic now at odds with Russia.
A surge in civilian casualties in late August, the report said, followed an influx of imported muscle including former or current Russian servicemen "on leave" to back up the separatists as the Ukrainian army was gaining the upper hand.
"The situation has improved since the ceasefire, but it is still concerning," Gianni Magazzini, of the office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, told a news conference to present the report.

[NATION.PK] At least eleven people, including three women, were murdered in eight different incidents in the provincial metropolis during Eid holidays, police and rescue sources said on Wednesday.
A 40-year-old woman and her teenage daughter were butchered by their relatives in the name of honour in Naseerabad. Police have nabbed Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw! the son and brother-in-law of the woman in connection with gruesome killings.
Resident of Gopal Nagar, Mudassar along with his uncle Zulfiqar attacked his mother Rukhsana Bibi and sister Sidra Bibi at their house. They mercilessly beheaded both the mother and her daughter with a knife. Police reached the spot and arrested the alleged killers. Police have also registered a double-murder case against Mudassar and Zulfiqar on the complaint of husband of the dear departed woman.
The complainant told the police Sherlocks that his 18-year-old daughter Sidra wanted to tie knot with a man of her own choice, adding that his wife was also in favour of her love-marriage. But the brother and uncle of Sidra were her strong opponents, he said. On the day of incident, they repeatedly stabbed Sidra and her mother and then beheaded them with a knife. The bodies were moved to the morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.
In another incident, a young woman and her brother-in-law were axed to death over an affair by their relatives in Chuhng. Resident of Manawali village, Riaz along with his sons attacked Ayesha Bibi and her paramour Sajjad at their house. Riaz, said to be a police official, got infuriated after witnessing his daughter and son-in-law in objectionable condition. He immediately called his sons who attacked the 'couple' and later axed them to death. Police reached the spot and removed the bodies to the morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy. Police have also arrested Riaz in connection with the double murder after recovering weapon from the scene of the crime. The alleged killer told the police that Sajjad was married to his elder daughter but he had developed illicit relations with his younger daughter. Further investigation was underway.
In another double-murder incident which took place in Shafiqabad police limits, two men were rubbed out over a trivial monetary dispute. Police said that Fayyaz alias Phajja and Fayyaz alias Chiddi were rubbed out by Umair and his accomplice Javed in Malipura. The alleged killers were running a rent-a-bike shop in the locality. Umair and Javed exchanged harsh words with Fayyaz and his friend over the rent of a cycle of violence. Later, they took out pistols and opened fire on them.
As a result, Fayyaz alias Phajja and Fayyaz alias Chiddi sustained multiple bullets wounds and was struck down in his prime while the killers fled the scene of the crime. Police have removed the bodies to the morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy and are investigating.
A private security guard shot his colleague dead at the gate of Lahore Safari Park on Wednesday. Police sources said that Shakeel exchanged harsh words with Mumtaz over an issue of entry tickets. Later, Shakeel took out his gun and opened straight fire on Mumtaz, resulting in his on-the-spot death. The alleged killer fled the scene of the crime instantly. Police have registered the case and are investigating. The body of the security guard was shifted to a hospital.
A 26-year-old rickshaw driver was tortured to death by five men in Qila Gujjar Singh. Resident of Data Nager, Nazeer Ahmed riding on his three-wheeler was on the way to Badami Bagh when he suddenly hit an eight-year-old boy near Bohar Wala Chowk. Muhammad Ateeq, father of the injured boy, along with his accomplices managed to capture the rickshaw driver. They brutally tortured the rickshaw driver who was struck down in his prime. Police have arrested Ateeq and are investigating.
A 28-year-old worker was found tortured to death from a carpet-manufacturing factory located in Defence-C police vicinity on Eid day. Police have detained six factory workers including a security guard and are interrogating them in connection with the killing. The body was moved to the morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.
A 32-year-old FIA official was found dead from an apartment in Johar Town. Police Sherlocks said that Asghar Ali was shot in the head. The body was moved to the morgue autopsy. Police have registered a murder case against unidentified killers and are investigating.
Meanwhile, ...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio had his hands full of angry bleached blonde... a 35-year-old man, unidentified so far, was found strangled from Hanjarwal. Police said that body, wrapped in a quilt and packed in an iron box, was lying at Shakir Chowk as they reached the spot. Some passersby spotted the box and contacted the police.
They body was removed to the morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy. Police have registered a murder case against unidentified killers and are investigating to solve the murder mystery.

[DAWN] At least eighteen people have died in the port city of Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... since Tuesday night due to the consumption of toxic moonshine, DawnNews reported.
