No respite from Thar drought as 9 more infants starve to death
[DAWN] UMERKOT: The drought-like condition in Tharparkar district claimed the lives of nine more infants on Tuesday, putting the total number of child deaths from malnutrition to an alarming 100 in nearly two months.

The corpse count from tehsil Chhachhro rose to six, with reports of three more infant deaths in Hayat Halepoto village. Three infants had died earlier today in village Alamsar of tehsil Chhachhro.

Earlier, two other children died at the Civil Hospital in Mithi. The death of another infant was reported from tehsil Diplo, raising the total number of deaths on Tuesday to nine.

Doctors told Dawn today that the reasons behind the deaths were malnutrition, pneumonia and diarrhoea.

Police arrest driver who had passengers in car's trunk
[ARABNEWS] All around the world there are certain rules and regulations when it comes to driving and the traffic police is always on the lookout for reckless drivers who break the rules.

A video on social media helped the Asir Traffic Department discern the identity of a driver who disregarded traffic rules and regulations to make a quick buck. Luckily, police operatives eventually him.

The man, who drives students to school every day, put an excessive number of children in his car and even used the space on the trunk to ferry passengers. Most of these children were going to elementary school.

Col. Mohammed bin Sayed Al-Asiri, Asir police spokesperson, said that they tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
the driver who was taking students from Asir to a school in Bisha for putting the life of the students in danger, aside from violating traffic rules and regulations.

Al-Asiri said they came to know about the incident through social media after a video and pictures of the car with school students sitting in the open trunk of a moving vehicle was uploaded on one of popular sites and the police immediately acted to arrest the driver after they identified him.

Church of England Approves Plan Allowing Female Bishops
[NY Times] The Church of England overturned centuries of tradition on Monday with a final vote allowing women to become bishops, with the first appointments possible by Christmas.

Approval of the historic change, which was first agreed to in July, was announced after a largely symbolic show of hands at the General Synod, the lawmaking body of the Church of England. The British Parliament supported the measure last month.

"Today we can begin to embrace a new way of being the church and moving forward together," the archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, said after the vote.

Downfall of Colombia's Billion-Dollar Gasoline Smuggler
A taste from a long article:
[Ozy] Marcos Figueroa had friends in the highest office and the lowest corner of the Colombian state of La Guajira. From a poor indigenous family, Figueroa rose to wealth and power … to become the most wanted man in northeast Colombia. Until his arrest on Oct. 22.

In the Colombia-Venezuela border region, the man known to all as “Marquitos” — little Marcos — is the alleged kingpin of gasoline smuggling, a billion-dollar trade that has claimed an estimated 15 percent of gas sales in Colombia and swallowed up to 40 percent of Venezuelan fuel subsidies, according to Gustavo Márquez, former Venezuelan minister for trade and commerce and ex-ambassador to Colombia. To the political world, he’s the alleged assassin responsible for a spate of political murders and the financial backer of a political-criminal alliance that seized control of the La Guajira governor’s office, along with almost half the state’s mayor’s offices.

Ukrainians say Rooshuns are moving military equipment into Donetsk

Rantburg.com

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Russia has moved more than 100 pieces of heavy military hardware into Donetsk, according to Russian and English language news reports.

According to the Ukrainian news outlet, censor.net.ua, Yevhen Perebiynis said that since November 15th, Russia has moved tanks and artillery pieces through border control points at Izvarino (eastern Donetsk) and Novoazovsk (southern Donetsk, near the Sea of Azov).

Perebiynis said that military equipment has been moved further into the interior of Donetsk towards Debaltsevo, which is northeast of Donetsk city and at Dokuchaevsk, which is 20 kilometers south of Donetsk city, at a location that Donas rebels calls its front line to the west.

Perebiynis said that a total of 500 personnel, "30 tanks, three air defense missile systems, six multiple rocket launchers, six heavy howitzers" and other military equipment have been moved to Dokuchaevsk.

A railroad train with 30 cars full of ammunition, presumably from Russia was said to be at Ilovaisk as well.

Ukrainians officially, and some private individuals, have been saying for months that Russia has been sending troops and equipment into Donetsk and Lugansk to help the Donbas rebels, which Russian officials have repeatedly denied, they say, to the point they don't even address the charge.

Donbas rebels admit receiving some military hardware from Russia, but Soviet era surplus military equipment, equipment now at least two generations older than the latest equipment the Russian Army now fields. Rebels also deny that any Russian combat units have been operating in the Don Basin on their behalf.

Even NATO officials up to and including the US commanding general of NATO forces in Europe. General Phillip Breedlove have been saying Russia is sending combat formations into the fight in the Don Basin.

Ukrainian officials are hoping now with the return of republican control of the US Senate, to have a more sympathetic hearing on their request for lethal military aid. So far, Ukrainian military are receiving non-lethal aid in the form of uniforms and combat rations, and other items for military use.

Lugansk Fighting Continues

According to reports from Donbas rebels, Ukrainian artillery units hit militia positions south of the T1303 highway in northern Lugansk, while Donbas rebel artillery units continued to hit Ukrainian checkpoints along the road and at Ukrainian Army positions further north..

Locations which suffered from Ukrainian artillery fire include Stakhanov, Kirov and Pervomaiskii. Donbas rebels charge that two civilians were killed and another seven were wounded by Ukrainian artillery at Kirov.

Militia artillery units hit Ukrainian positions in Schastye, Trehizbenka, Zolotnoye, Crimean and Borovsky. Donbas rebels say one of their artillery units hit a Ukrainian Army checkpoint, presumably along the Northern Donetsk River at a locality called Novaya Kondrashevska.

The Ukrainian military press center said Tuesday that rebel artillery killed one soldier and wounded nine others in three separate artillery strikes in Soloniki, Trehizbenka and Stanitsa Luganskaya (northeast of Lugansk city) over night. Ukrainian artillery units reportedly responded in kind, but the rebel target areas were not disclosed.

Ukrainian military analyst Roman Burko reported two days ago that Donbas rebels are conducting line straitening operations in the area of T1303 highway. Line straitening operations are usually meant to draw in extra forces into reserve or for deployment elsewhere.

According to Burko, Donbas rebels control the river crossing at Trokhizbenka, the result of the capture of Ukrainian Army checkpoint 32 two weeks ago by rebel forces. This is a single crossing the Donbas rebels control, presumably by artillery observer, but Burko warns that rebels want other bridges near Lysychansk and Rubizhne. Taking those two bridgeheads will allow rebels to conduct operations north of Schastye, presumably cutting off the main supply route the Ukrainian hold into town.

Burko also said that rebels have concentrated a large number of BM-21 122mm rocket artillery launchers just south of Schastye, so that an artillery attack on the area is expected soon.

Merkel issues stark warning to Russia over Ukraine
[IRISHTIMES] German chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
has warned Russia she would not allow it "trample on international law" and undermine the peaceful post-Cold War order in Europe. After three hours of talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
, a disillusioned Dr Merkel warned Moscow "old thinking about spheres of influence" would not assert itself again in Europe.

While the German leader delivered her stark warning during a speech in Sydney, Mr Putin told German television the key to resolving the conflict over Ukraine lay in maintaining strong Russian-German relations.

In an interview with ARD public television, Mr Putin made his clearest concession yet that Moscow was assisting rebels in eastern Ukraine with troops and weapons. Asked about the claims, confirmed by outside observers but denied consistently by the Kremlin, Mr Putin said: "Anyone waging a fight . . . will always find weapons." He attacked the West for ignoring Ukraine's use of heavy weapons to "annihilate" civilians in rebel-held areas.

"Is that what you want? We certainly don't. And we won't let it happen," he said.
How are we going to stop it, pray tell?

#3  Empty threat. The only way the German military could get to the Ukraine would be with tourist visas. The Germans do not have the logistics and the transport to project power across the Oder River.

What would give Vlad pause would be a significant re-equipping of the Polish armed forces so that they could discard their Soviet era heavy arms and use modern armor and aircraft. Throw in better comms, training and match that to the always superb Polish intel.

#4  Its not what they can do now, its what he might push them into doing - like re-militarizing. Not going to happen now, but its a future Vlad seems willing to create in which Germany does rearm and does become aggressive politically again.

#6  Ukrainian president Porosehnk declaring a few days ago that he will impose an "economic blockade" on the rebel areas of Donetsk and Lugansk, practically guaranteeing the Russians will be involved in the two nascent republic for some time to come. It means payments of pensions will be done by Russia and Russia will impose a price to the leadership of Donetsk and Lugansk.

So, thanks to Poroshenko's brilliant political initiative, we can expect another election that will move Donetsk and Lugansk into the Russian Federation.

Just by Gawd brilliant.

High school lunch room diplomacy works!

Hint: There are assholes on both sides of this equation.

#7  Agreed there are idiots on both sides, ukranuan completely bungled this. But the US was pretty ham handed, and sat on the sideline passively for far too long. That's on of the reasons Vlad moved - he knew the US president was timid and reactive, and the US state drept was/is led by a foppish fool and professional bureaucratic imbeciles.

I dread all of Obamas chickens coming home to roost. We will he inundated in chickenshit.

Health Care Law Recasts Insurers as Obama Allies
[NYTimes] "But since the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, the relationship between the Obama administration and insurers has evolved into a powerful, mutually beneficial partnership that has been a boon to the nation’s largest private health plans and led to a profitable surge in their Medicaid enrollment."

#7  Everyone seems to forget (NOT Rantburgers) that the "Corporatist", "Crony Capitalist" model was basically invented by Benito Mussolini who started as a communist.

Fascism is different from Socialism in that the state does not "own" the businesses, it "just" controls them through regulations and graft.

If you look at this regime as moving toward fascism rather than pure socialism it all makes a lot more sense.
Posted by: AlanC || 11/19/2014 8:12 Comments || Top||

#8  Conceptually, it’s indeed Fascism. But the early Progressive movement recognized that term was loaded with negative connotations. The correct term is ‘Third Way’. In reality it’s Fascism-light if you will. It still has all the payola and graft to the elite yet couched in Social Justice. Most importantly Third Way policies attempt to wrestle all sectors of private industry into central control. The key was to convince most liberals and leftists that they’re all Progressives. And as the videos of Mr. Gruber have illustrated the completion of that process has allowed the manipulators to deceive gullible supporters with relative ease. And if the leftists ever catch on to the ruse the lever-pullers will simply reply – at this point what difference does it make?
Posted by: DepotGuy || 11/19/2014 11:46 Comments || Top||

#9  Government convinces the publically-traded insurance companies to go the Socialist route, providing financial and employment/consulting contract inducement to the mucky-mucks running them. Publicly-owned company officers, imho, are no different than prostitutes, and the Gov't. John will be accepted as "enhancing shareholder value" on a permanent basis. Oh. and it's risk-free, too!

Outstanding equities issued by the insurance companies are converted, by Fed Fiat, into government debt instruments and allocated to MyIRA's.

See how easy this works?

#10  “Insurers and the government have developed a symbiotic relationship, nurtured by tens of billions of dollars that flow from the federal Treasury to insurers each year,”

Bald-faced redistribution of wealth. Supported by lies and underhandedness on the part of the left. Aided and abetted by a complicit MSM completely in the tank for Emperor Ebola.
Posted by: JohnQC || 11/19/2014 16:03 Comments || Top||

#11  Please. The health plans did not want to become a public utility, they are simply playing the hand they've been dealt.

This article is simply the Administration setting up to re-demonize the private insurers.

By design (cf Gruber) rates will be increasing at least 20% / year for most consumers in perpetuity (so the healthy can fund the sick).

Pols will fulminate and villianize the insurers, even as the reinsurance reimbursements that keep insurers solvent in this untenable arrangement disappear by law in the next couple years.

So pols get to rattle their swords, insurers cower and mewl, and tax payers foot the bill.

That's what fundamental change is all about.

Democrats Fume in Caucus as Duckworth Denied Vote
House Democrats are continuing to criticize Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s refusal to allow Rep. Tammy Duckworth — a double amputee Iraq War veteran whose pregnancy has made her unable to travel — to vote by proxy in leadership elections this week.
A bell that cannot be un-rung. Now I have a reason to observe Ms. Duckworth's political travels.
Less here than appears: Ms. Duckworth was asking for a waiver of a long-established rule, and the Dems said no. The Pub House caucus has a similar rule, though if they enforced it to prevent a pregnant member from voting there would be howls from the feminazis. That said, I don't see why the caucus can't make an allowance here -- if they're afraid of proxy votes, let Ms. Duckworth Skype into the proceeding and vote that way.
