Pig Eats Owner's Pot, Man Has A Meltdown
After his pet pig ate all of his marijuana, a furious Ohio man went on a drinking binge that resulted in his bust Saturday for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police report.

While the pig, named Millie, ended up with pot in her belly, she is not a pot-bellied pig, based on a review of photos of the animal.

Investigators say that Chad Spohn, 44, became highly intoxicated after drinking a bottle of Everclear, the 190-proof alcohol
Yup, that'll do it..
Spohn threatened to harm himself during several 911 calls, according to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office report.

Harvard formally bans sexual relationships between professors and undergrads
[WASHINGTONPOST] Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences will join a small but growing number of colleges formally banning sexual relationships between professors and undergraduate students, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The story quoted the Harvard history professor who headed the panel that wrote the policy, Alison Johnson: “Undergraduates come to college to learn from us. We’re not here to have sexual or romantic relationships with them.”

Harvard provided a brief and decidedly unsexy statement: “As part of a formal process to review Harvard University’s Title IX policy, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Committee on Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedures, led by Professor Alison Johnson, determined that the existing language on relationships of unequal status did not explicitly reflect the faculty’s expectations of what constituted an appropriate relationship between undergraduate students and faculty members. Therefore, the Committee revised the policy to include a clear prohibition to better accord with these expectations.”
Fifty years ago that was the norm. There were also girls' and boys' dormitories and visiting restrictions between the two. There was a considerable amount of silliness that went on, along with a certain amount of breeding, but the grownups were at least making an attempt to control it. Nobody was squalling about a "culture of rape" on campuses.

There aren't many relationships more unequal that teacher-student, nor many more susceptible to abuse. Maybe politician-intern, but that would certainly be a rarity, wouldn't it.

#4  Maybe politician-intern

Bingo. BTW, it was a politician that signed in federal law the simple fact of someone holding a office/position over the other participant in a 'personal' relationship as 'de facto' sexual harassment. Took Harvard, what, twenty years to implement existing law. Now you know where you know who learned you can ignore law if you want to.

Rotherham sex abuse scandal policeman killed
[TheStar] A serving police officer at the centre of an undercover probe into the Rotherham child sex abuse scandal has died after being hit by a car, The Star can exclusively reveal.

PC Hassan Ali had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission after it was alleged he twice asked a Rotherham sexual exploitation victim out on a date.

After a lengthy investigation over a number of months, The Star discovered four complaints were made against PC Ali to South Yorkshire Police by two members of the public.

The Star agreed to hold off on exposing his alleged involvement in the scandal after police advised us they were mounting an operation to monitor the officer.

Russia warns US not to send arms supplies to Ukraine
Donetsk military spokesman Lt. Colonel Eduard Basurin said a day or two ago that Ukrainians are already using NATO artillery rounds, specifically the 155mm.

[Iran Press TV] Russia has warned the United States against sending weapons to Ukraine, saying the move would cause "colossal damage" to ties between the two countries.

Moscow is "seriously concerned" over discussions in the West about sending arms supplies to the Kiev government, which is embroiled in fierce festivities with pro-Russian forces in the east of Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry front man, Alexander Lukashevich, said on Thursday.

"Without a doubt, if such a decision is realized, it will cause colossal damage to US-Russian relations, especially if the residents of Donbass (Donetsk and Lugansk regions) start to be killed by American weapons," Lukashevich added.

Janes: Rooshun Army adds new AKs to their arsenal
The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected two assault rifles manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern as new standard issue firearms for the Russian Ratnik soldier modernisation programme.

"We have already made a deal and selected assault rifles from Izhmash. It won in cost to effectiveness terms. The quality is also acceptable for us," Deputy Minister of Defence Yuriy Borisov stated on Russian radio on 24 January.

Borisov stated that two assault rifles manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern were selected by the Armed Forces: the AK-12, chambered in 5.45x39 mm, and the 7.62x39 mm AK-103-4.

"We also increase the number of ordered Ratnik systems from 50,000 to 70,000", Borisov added.

The next US defense secretary says he'll consider keeping the A-10
Defense Secretary nominee Ashton Carter agreed Wednesday to hear arguments from Joint Tactical Air Controllers (JTACS) for keeping the A-10 despite renewed efforts by the Air Force to retire the Thunderbolt.

At his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carter told A-10 advocate Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., that he had read letters in support of the A-10 from the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) Association.

The TACP Association represents about 3,300 active and retired JTACs who had the mission of moving forward with ground troops to select targets and call in airstrikes.

Carter made no commitments on the A-10, but when asked by Ayotte if he would speak with representatives of the TACP, he said: “Absolutely, I will.”

Active-duty members of the TACP have been told not to offer opinions on the A-10, but the retired members have unanimously supported keeping the Thunderbolt, affectionately known as the Warthog in the fleet, Ayotte said.

She said that the TACP members agree that the F-16, the F-15 and the B-1 bomber “cannot replicate the capabilities of the A-10” in performing the close-air support mission for ground troops.

The Air Force last year sought to begin retiring the A-10s to clear the way for replacing them with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter but Congress voted for additional funding to keep the A-10s in the fleet through fiscal year 2015.
Until the F-35 is "working" and can prove that it can do the job and command shows a willingness to put them close enough to the ground and enemy fire to possibly be effective, I'd say delay retiring them. They would only save enough money to buy one fighter probably. (No, I don't believe the $3.5B cost-savings numbers because it stinks to high heaven, as did the SR-71s' cost savings numbers.) A simple model would be to say that these planes are so special because they can save the pilot's life during the mission. The A-10 could save dozens or hundreds if its life were extended. I would hate to be the guy that someone pointed to and said "your kids died because of this kind of idiot who wanted the A-10 canceled before it had a proven replacement."
In its budget proposal for fiscal year 2016, the Air Force stated its intention to begin retiring the A-10 in FY 2016 “to focus available funding on more urgent combatant commander requirements.”

Under the Air Force plan, about 164 A-10s would be retired in 2016 but “the A-10 will remain operational and available for deployment until 2019.” The Air Force said the plan would save an estimated $3.5 billion over five years.

At an Air Force briefing last month, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh, a former A-10 pilot, said “It’s not about not liking or not wanting the A-10. It’s about some very tough decisions that we have to make to recapitalize an Air Force for the threat 10 years from now.”

#1  Congress can also 'consider' the promotion lists Dept of the Air Force sends over for approval too. Played this game before on Tailhook, you want to ignore Congress, they can ignore you right back where it hurts but doesn't disable.

#5  Here's what I would do. First, I'd cancel the F-35. Dead as in doorknob-dead.

For the Air Force -->

New F-16s with new avionics
Reopen F-22 assembly line to get ~ 100 more
Rehab the current A-10s one more time
Build an A-10 specific successor

For the Navy -->

New F-18E/Fs with new avionics
Convert X-47B into a useful unmanned carrier drone
Lighter X-47B variant for heavy assault ships
Alternatively: build an A-6 specific successor

For the Marines -->

New F-18E/Fs with new avionics
Rehab the current Harriers
