Pew survey shows Jewish population drop in Europe
[IsraelTimes] Approximately 1.4 million Jews live in continent, down from 2 million in 1991 and 3.2 million in 1960
Those Pew people ask the darndest questions!
Europe has lost more than half its Jewish population since 1960, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center.

Approximately 1.4 million Jews live in Europe, down from the 2 million in 1991, according to the Pew survey, which came out Monday. In 1960, some 3.2 million Jews lived in Europe.

European Jews now account for about 10 percent of the world Jewish population, while in 1939, the 9.5 million Jews on the continent accounted for 57 percent of the world Jewish population.

The number of Jews has decreased most in Eastern Europe and areas of the former Soviet Union, according to the survey report.
Some stopped in Germany, many went on to Israel, and some of those continued on to America.
Pew identifies multiple reasons for the postwar population decline, including immigration to Israel, intermarriage and other forms of cultural assimilation.
And, sadly, aging population and a low birthrate.
The worldwide Jewish population of 14 million is still smaller than it was before the Holocaust, when it was over 16 million.

Afghanistan
8-Month Pregnant Woman Loses Child After Beaten by Mullah
[Tolo News] An eight-month pregnant mother lost her child after she was severely beaten by a Mullah who believed to be an exorcist in Chahar Dara district of Kunduz.

The newly-wed woman, who requested her name not be revealed, said the Mullah named Dost Mohammad claimed that she was possessed after her husband's family took her to him for a ritual treatment, when all she was suffering from was low blood pressure.

"The Mullah told my family that I was possessed, but I was not," she said. "He [Mullah] beat me severely in order to free me from the demons that I did not have. As a result the doctors notified me that I lost my child."

The doctors at Kunduz civilian hospital confirmed that the woman had lost her child as a result of physical violence.

"There are signs of violence on her body," Doctor Quddos Meyakhail said, adding that low blood pressure is normal in first-time mothers. "We have to remove the dead child from her womb because of the safety of woman's health."

But the Kunduz Police didn't immediately respond to a TOLOnews request for information.

14-year-old girl killed after gang rape in Takhar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A 14 years-old girl has been gang raped and then killed by a group of kidnappers in northeastern Takhar Province.
For being so devout those bastards sure do spend a lot of time attacking women. And boys. And men. I notice they always seem to need to bring some friends to help, too.
Abdul Khalil Asir, front man for the police headquarters of Takhar province says that 14 years-old Parwana was kidnapped from Bor Ya Baf area of Ishkamish District two days ago.

He said that the group of kidnappers have 1st gang-raped the girl and then killed her.

Asir added that two persons have been tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in this regard who accepted their involvement in this case. He said that further investigation is ongoing from both arrested criminals.

Recently a sharp rise can be seen in rape cases in Afghanistan.

About a week ago a pregnant women was gang-raped in Jawzjan Province after she was tied with a rope. In December last year a girl was raped by the security guards of Herat Hospital.
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...

Rights Groups were shocked when a five year-old girl was gang-raped in Takhar Province about two months before whose parents then came to Kabul for justice.

Also last year a group of women were gang raped in Qargha area of Kabul but the perpetrators were later hanged.

UN drops support for joint DRC operation
[Iran Press TV] The United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
is withdrawing promised support for an anti-militant operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC), which was supposed to be jointly carried out with the Congolese military.

The world body's decision came after two Congolese generals linked to human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
violations were picked to lead the operation.

A UN official said on Saturday that relevant Congolese authorities would be served with formal letters "concerning the cessation of support."

The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) had been working with the Congolese army on the plan to drive out the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) turbans from the east of the DRC.

The top UN envoy to Congo, Martin Kobler, has said the end of the FDLR will be "a turning point which will fundamentally alter the security situation" in the region, where several gangs have competed for control of vast mineral resources.

Kinshasa, however, missed a deadline to sack the two generals, Bruno Mundevu and Fall Sikabwe, whom, the UN has said, are known to be heavily involved in "massive human rights violations."

Cristina Kirchner's allies rally behind Argentina's president to deny bombing 'cover-up' claims
[ABC.NET.AU] Senior government officials are rallying behind Argentina
...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita...
's president Cristina Kirchner after a state prosecutor announced he would keep investigating accusations that she tried to cover up Iran's alleged involvement in a 1994 bombing.

Eighty-five people were killed in the attack at a Buenos Aires Jewish centre, the deadliest in Argentina's history.

The allegations have plunged Ms Kirchner's last year in office into turmoil at a time her leftist government is already grappling with an economy teetering on the brink of recession.

On Friday, state investigator Gerardo Pollicita formally reiterated the accusations levelled against Ms Kirchner a month ago by his colleague Alberto Nisman.

Mr Nisman was found dead, with a single bullet in his head on January 18, a day before he was to detail further evidence of his accusations to Congress.

#4  Please properly quote the Constitution - you have an extra comma in there and it IS important. "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

The spurious comma was added during a transcription and separates the "right" from the "operative" words.

As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, then-Secretary of State:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Much more clear as to the meaning than the Senate transcript version - and also it should be the official version given that was the one ratified by the states and accepted by the Secretary of State.

#5  Since so many states have such diverse laws, it’s impossible for gun owners traveling from state to state to know and understand them all.

No, it’s not impossible to ‘know and understand’ various state laws – gun regulations or otherwise. As a matter of fact, it’s quite simple. That is if you know how to read and have basic comprehension skills. If you choose to offer a constitutional objection I’m willing to listen. Otherwise, and pardon my crude language, fuck off.

Nawaz Sharif discourages the idea of TV ratings
[NATION.PK] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
today addressed the Council of Pakistain Newspaper Editors and asked media to play the role in steering the country out of challenges.

Sharif said he believes in a free and independent media. "I have profound respect for those journalists who make efforts to protect democracy and the Constitution," he said, adding that for the next two years, channels should forego the race for ratings.

Besides praising writers for their part in improving country's image internationally, Sharif highlighted the importance of formulating a code of conduct for responsible journalism. Sharif said that he never understood the purpose behind sit-ins, adding that they badly affected Pakistain's economy.

European space probe takes detailed photos of comet
[Iran Press TV] The European Space Agency (ESA)'s Rosetta probe has flown within just six kilometers (less than 4 miles) of the comet it has been tracking for months, taking detailed photos.

The spacecraft reached so close above the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on Saturday. It is expected to send images by Monday.

The achievement would not recur as the comet becomes increasingly active the nearer it gets to the sun and its tail increases in size.

Scientists at the ESA's European Space Operations Centre in the German city of Darmstadt want to investigate how gas and dust escape from the comet's surface.

Rosetta has been flying alongside the comet since August.

Rosetta caught up with the comet in November after a 10-year flight. The same month saw the spacecraft release the Philae lander to the comet's surface.

Philae, however, ran out of charge and cannot replenish its batteries as it is now placed in a dark spot on the comet.
