Don Vittorio Casamonica goes out in style.
[Mail] Residents of Rome left furious after 'mafia boss' is given Hollywood-style funeral complete with horse-drawn carriage, flower petals and theme music from THE GODFATHER being played outside church Hundreds of tearful mourners in Rome paid final respects to Casamonica clan 'leader' Vittorio Casamonica, 65.

Six black horses seen pulling antique, black-and-gold carriage to a stop in front of church as a band played. But Mayor Ignazio Marino said it was 'intolerable that funerals are used by the living to send mafia messages.'
I love understated good taste.
Parish priest, the Reverend Giancarlo Manieri, insisted he had no control over what happened outside church

Caitlyn Jenner Could Face Manslaughter Charge in Deadly Malibu Crash
[VARIETY] Caitlyn Jenner could be charged with manslaughter following her car accident in Malibu earlier this year that left one dead.

"The case will be submitted to the district attorney next week," said Lt. Shaun Mathers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Detectives have completed their six-month investigation and are set to present evidence to the prosecution that could lead to a misdemeanor manslaughter charge against the "I Am Cait" star. Because there's "nothing really egregious" in the case, Det. Richard Curry of the Sheriff's Dept. said there's a "50/50" chance that she will be charged.

A misdemeanor manslaughter charge usually carries a one-year county jail sentence.

Jenner was driving down Pacific Coast Highway on Feb. 7 at an unsafe speed when her Escalade hit another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction crash, authorities said. Curry charged that Jenner's violation of the vehicular manslaughter law ultimately led to a death.

"My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident," Jenner said in a statement a day after the accident. "It is a devastating tragedy, and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible."

Although Jenner was not speeding, she was driving too fast for the day's road conditions.

According to authorities, Kim Howe's Lexus rear-ended Jessica Steindorff's Toyota Prius, causing Jenner's Escalade to rear-end Howe's car, pushing it into oncoming traffic. A Hummer then struck Howe's car head-on, causing her to die at the scene near Corral Canyon Road.

#7  Funny Deacon.

My wife has has Bruce's Yarn on every once in a while, where I consider it fair game for discussion, and successfully argued its similarities to Kiki's Delivery Service.

One is a story about an old man with a keen interest for coming of age girls and witches. The other is a cartoon.

I got the great eye roll, and I shit you not, seconds later Bruce was with some coach who said, "Congratulations Cait, you are now entering the pubescence of your womanhood." The timing could not have been more perfect or point made so well.

Feeling the rout, I argued that through Bruce's actions he is guilty of killing somebody's grandma. Real grandma, not some old man pretending to be a grandma dressed as a 14 year old - that's some little red riding hood shit there. That is mentally abnormal for an old man to have his chest cut open and face smashed to start up a collection of Bratz.

"But he was always that way." Bullshit. I'm not saying that idea wasn't in his head somewhere, and Lord knows that show has made every male into and alcoholic or drug addict, but it isn't like the precedure is new, and if it was ever felt as strong earlier in life he would have done this so long ago he wouldn't have kids and we would not know of any of this until the next Where Are They Now? Olympic Special.

He had to do something to crawl out from under their shadow--he became Cait in a bold move to cope with this bunch. The crash was probably due to hot flashes brought on by hormone treatments or maybe due to a wardrobe adjustment.

#1  OTOH, as occurred times before, pre-9-11/OWG America = post-9-11/OWG Amerika may need to depend on the Ex-Soviet Russians for reliable space info, including as per incoming space rocks.

As per 1960's-1970's Guam Taotamonas, "DEEP IMPACT", + Bruce Willis' "ARMAGEDDON", there is one that will divide or break up like Nostradamus' "CHIREN", WID ONE PIECE SLAMMING INTO EAST ASIA OFF CHINA, WHILST PIECES OF ANOTHER SLAMS INTO HAWAII + WEST COAST.

Guam + other Pacific islands will be hit by tidal waves emanating from both events on either side of the Pacific.

I nickname it "THE EQUALIZER" or "GOD'S EQUALIZER", AKA "WRATH OF GOD" - heavily damaged China includ RUSSIA will be forced to become MilPol assertive + belligerent in order to survive, whilst the Superpower USA will see its National, Geopol power de facto decline unto great weakness.

Burundi president sworn into third term amid protests
[Iran Press TV] Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza has been sworn into office for a controversial third term in a surprise inauguration ceremony, amid persisting protests against his new tenure.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Burundi's presidential office, said Nkurunziza took the "oath for a new term of five years" in a ceremony, which was made public only hours after being held.

During the inauguration ceremony, Nkurunziza swore loyalty to the constitution, vowing to dedicate all his "forces to the defense of the best interests of the nation, to assure national unity and the cohesion of the Burundian people, social peace and justice."

Nkurunziza won an outright victory in last month's presidential election after grabbing 69.41 percent of the votes.

This is while Nkurunziza's third term has widely been censured as unconstitutional by the country's opposition, prompting months of violent protest rallies that has so far claimed more than 90 lives.

Arabia
Saudi MERS infections soar ahead of hajj pilgrimage
[AlAhram] MERS coronavirus infections have soared in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
ahead of the hajj pilgrimage, forcing the closure of a major hospital's emergency ward in Riyadh and killing three people, officials and the press said.

The Saudi Gazette said Thursday authorities shut the emergency ward at the King Abdulaziz Medical City, one of the capital's largest hospitals, "after at least 46 people, including hospital staff" contracted the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

The closure was confirmed to AFP by a hospital employee.

The health ministry has said it registered 21 confirmed MERS infections, all except one of them in Riyadh, between August 9 and 15.

There was no immediate explanation for the difference in the figures.

Health Minister Khalid al-Falih said late Wednesday the hospital "has faced a spread of the coronavirus during the past few weeks, which started as one case."

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
in remarks carried by the official SPA news agency, he gave reassurances that the cases were "still limited."

He urged "vigilance when contacting people with respiratory illnesses" and preventive measures when visiting MERS patients.

The latest deaths occurred in Riyadh, and the victims were all Saudis aged between 65 and 86, the ministry said.

That raises to 483 the number of deaths from 1,118 MERS infections in Saudi Arabia, where the virus first appeared in 2012, according to the health ministry.

Saudi Arabia, preparing to host more than two million Moslems from all over the world for the annual hajj pilgrimage -- expected to begin on September 21 -- has been worst hit by the coronavirus.

Falih said authorities have "prepared a comprehensive preventive plan starting from entry points, to hajj sites, until the pilgrims return home."

The ministry will "dedicate all its efforts to prevent any infectious disease from spreading in the kingdom," SPA quoted him as saying.

Officials have declared last year's pilgrimage as epidemic-free after the oil-rich kingdom, home to Islam's holiest sites, engaged thousands of health workers to make sure pilgrims were protected from two deadly viruses -- Ebola and MERS.

MERS is considered a deadlier but less infectious cousin of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus that appeared in Asia in 2003 and killed hundreds of people, mostly in China.

Its symptoms can include fever, coughing and shortness of breath.

There are no approved vaccines against MERS, which is believed to originate in camels.

Caribbean-Latin America
At least 125 people killed in El Salvador in 3 days
[Iran Press TV] At least 125 people have been killed in the Latin American country of El Salvador in only three days, according to police.
Sounds like El Salvador needs an 'RAB'...
At least 40, 42 and 43 people were killed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday respectively, National Police chief Mauricio Ramirez told news hounds on Wednesday.

"These are worrisome numbers. These are Salvadorans who are dying, regardless of who is a gang member or not," Ramirez added.

Most of the killings were related to gang violence. The country has always been plagued by such violence, but the recent number in murder rate, according to AFP, shows the country has taken a turn for even worse.

The government of El Salvador believes that narco gang leaders were trying to force the government to sit down and hold talks with them.
By killing each other in large numbers? Clever.
According to Justice and Public Safety Minister Benito Lara, "They want to exert some pressure and for the government to grant some of the things they are asking for."

Drug lords have repeatedly demanded that their leaders be transferred out of a maximum-security prison.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Why Russia Is Destroying Sanctioned EU Food
h/t Gates of Vienna
[GlobalResearch] President Putin's late-July decree to destroy all sanctioned EU foodstuffs caught at the Russian border has incited a flurry of backlash, even among some typically Russian-friendly foreign journalists. Russia Insider's Danielle Ryan, for example, documents not only instances of domestic criticism over the initiative, but also personally laments that it's "wrong" and "not right". It's completely understandable why the publicized destruction of food is appalling to many people worldwide, but the fact is that they're largely missing the deeper reasons why this is happening, and that's partly due to the Russian authorities not properly communicating them.

It's not simply about saving the administrative resources and time that have to be directed to resending the products back to their original destination, nor in depriving a sanctions violator of the opportunity to profitably resell their said contraband back in the EU or elsewhere. There's also more at play than just supporting Russian domestic producers and ending the country's foreign food reliance. What's really happening is that Russia is publicly defending itself from a clever form of psychological-economic warfare being waged against it by the EU, and it's doing so at this specific time in order to limit the ability of this offensive to interfere with the upcoming general elections in September.

...The most common criticism surrounding Russia's controversial measure is that the government should donate the smuggled food to those in need, perhaps even to the refugees in Donbass, instead of just destroying it. This well-intentioned and altruistic perspective forgets that that there are concrete health concerns behind the government giving its citizens or other recipients food products of unverified quality, but that's not all. The main issue is that doing so would only be a short-term solution to whatever problem it was meant to address (be it poverty in Russia or helping war refugees in Donbass), albeit one with major external strings attached that are unacceptable for any self-respecting and patriotic authorities to fully agree to. To begin with, if Russia gave the food to anyone else, it would merely be acting as a conduit for de-facto 'humanitarian aid' from the EU to its population, and as with all examples of this type of international assistance, the donor's image would be enhanced at the government's expense and could easily be exploited by Brussels for soft power gains. It would also undermine Russia's message that its domestic issues (even poverty) don't need foreign interference to solve.

Moving along, another primary reason behind Moscow's refusal to give the confiscated food away is that it establishes a dependency relationship between the recipients and the EU donor that could be broken at any time. Should the EU and its related companies decide to stop breaking the law and trying to smuggle their products into Russia, the civil beneficiaries would suddenly be left without the resources that they had previously come to expect, possibly even leading to unrest and discontent with the government intermediaries that had previously facilitated the 'donations'.

Ukraine planning a massive offensive

For a map, click here. You can enlarge the map, if you open it separately.

You can read the author's opinions here and here on whether Ukraine can even pull off a modern offensive: Spoiler: They can't.

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

The Ukrainian general staff are planning a massive offensive that will surround Donetsk city, separating it from the Russian border and its sister republic in the east, Lugansk, according to Russian language news accounts.

Lt. Colonel Eduard Basurin, spokesman for the Donetsk ministry of defense said on Thursday that rebel military officials received Ukrainian plans for the attack from Ukrainian officers at the Ukrainian general staff. He did not disclose who passed the data to rebel forces.

According to the data supplied at the Donetsk ministry of defense website, the new Ukrainian offensive is to be similar to the failed August, 2014 offensive. The Ukrainians then attempted an encirclement of Donetsk, only to become bogged down in rebel counterattacks in Ilovaisk and Debaltsevo, and eventually losing as many as 1,000 dead in the ensuing encirclement.

The rebel Ilovaisk defensive operation, which took three weeks to complete, has since become emblematic of the problems the Ukrainian military face in deploying troops against Ukrainian rebels and Russians in the two breakaway republics in large scale offensive operations.

One of the charges against one Ukrainian military battalion was that once the southern pincer battalion, a private volunteer unit, retreated back to its base in Mariupol, ending any hope the surrounded troops had of a breakout.

According to rebel officials, the Ukrainians have a total of 90,000 troops, 450 tanks, 2,500 armored personnel carriers and 230 BM-21 rocket artillery launchers in the southeastern Ukraine. Of those troops, 57,500 are slated for the offensive, along with 310 tanks and 200 BM-21s.

The offensive is in four thrusts. The northernmost, identified in documents as "Group S", consisting of five mechanized brigades, one tank brigade and three artillery brigades, is assigned to sweep southeastward through the border areas between Donetsk and Lugansk to the Russian border at Usenka.

The southernmost thrust, identified as "Group M", consisting of five mechanized brigades, two tank brigades and one artillery brigade, is assigned to head straight east, blowing past Volnovakha-Telmanovo region east to link up with "Group S" at Usenka. This operation along with Group S is set to be the outer ring of the encirclement of Donetsk city.

Two other thrusts by the Ukrainian forces, one north and one south, consisting of five mechanized brigades, one tank brigade and three artillery brigades, are to sweep immediately north and south of Donetsk city, eventually meeting at Ilovaisk. This operation is set to be the inner ring of the encirclement.

The offensive, the most ambitious ever taken by the Ukrainians is modeled on the old Soviet Operation Uranus that captured the besieged city of Stalingrad in late 1942. In that operation the Red Army spent weeks building up forces in four distinct areas to encircle the city, concluding on November 26th with an outer ring and an inner ring. In every treatment of the subject, both sides knew what was coming because that amount of troops available to the Soviets was difficult to hide. Despite the repeated warnings by German and Romanian troops both inside and outside the Stalingrad area of operation, as well as from staff generals on the German general staff, the German general staff did very little to prepare for a counterattack once the Soviet attack started. Eventually, the only German mobile forces not tied down in fighting before or during the counteroffensive was a single weakened tank corps, which wound up being easily destroyed in the Soviet offensive.

As this writer has said repeatedly on the subject, such massive sweeping movements leave huge gaps which must be covered by mobile patrols or by the air. Also, in a general offensive artillery has a special role in initially breaking any enemy line, keeping reinforcing troops at bay, and preventing counterattacks before they begin. In modern fighting, ammunition and fuel resupply are a critical factor, since both can be consumed in very short order, especially critical if the offensive forces expects to fight round the clock.

Lt. Colonel Basurin remarked that such a blitzkrieg style of warfare ended up with Ilovaisk, which killed a huge number of Ukrainian soldiers.

Fighting in Donetsk

Europe
U.S. told the Ukraine to 'stand down' as Putin invaded Crimea.
[Bloomberg View] As Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces took over Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in early 2014, the interim Ukrainian government was debating whether or not to fight back against the "little green men" Russia had deployed. But the message from the Barack Obama administration was clear: avoid military confrontation with Moscow.

The White House's message to Kiev was advice, not an order, U.S. and Ukrainian officials have recently told us, and was based on a variety of factors. There was a lack of clarity about what Russia was really doing on the ground. The Ukrainian military was in no shape to confront the Russian Spetsnaz (special operations) forces that were swarming on the Crimean peninsula. Moreover, the Ukrainian government in Kiev was only an interim administration until the country would vote in elections a few months later. Ukrainian officials told us that other European governments sent Kiev a similar message.

But the main concern was Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As U.S. officials told us recently, the White House feared that if the Ukrainian military fought in Crimea, it would give Putin justification to launch greater military intervention in Ukraine, using similar logic to what Moscow employed in 2008 when Putin invaded large parts of Georgia in response to a pre-emptive attack by the Tbilisi government. Russian forces occupy two Georgian provinces to this day.

Skipping down to strategic surprise.

When Russian special operations forces, military units and intelligence officers seized Crimea, it surprised the U.S. government. Intelligence analysts had briefed Congress 24 hours before the stealth invasion, saying the Russian troop buildup on Ukraine's border was a bluff. Ukraine's government -- pieced together after President Viktor Yanukovych fled Kiev for Russia following civil unrest -- was in a state of crisis. The country was preparing for elections and its military was largely dilapidated and unprepared for war.

#2  Told to stand down, or told they were on their own?
Only practical difference is for the first, they are actually listening to Obama.

Hey, didn't the Ukrainians give up their nukes for some security guarantees?

France's Far-Right National Front Expels Founder Jean-Marie Le Pen
[NBCNEWS] La Belle France's far-right National Front expelled founder Jean-Marie Le Pen on Thursday in a bid to shed the party's anti-Semitic reputation and bolster his daughter Marine's prospects in a presidential election bid.

The decision to sideline the 87-year-old Le Pen was taken by the Front's executive committee after several hours of discussions with him.

"At the end of the meeting held today, the executive committee of the Front National...deliberated and decided, by the required majority, to exclude M. Jean Marie Le Pen as a member," the party said in a statement.

The expulsion followed several earlier attempts to remove him.

Marine Le Pen, who took over the party leadership from her father in 2011, has been trying to rid the party of its anti-Semitic image and position it as an anti-immigrant, Eurosceptic force offering protectionist economic policies.

Greece's Tsipras steps down, calls elections after tough battle on bailout
[LATIMES] Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his resignation Thursday and called for elections in the wake of a bruising political battle over austerity measures demanded by the nation’s creditors.
Tsipras campaigns on what people want, does what he needed to do, takes heat, bows out...
The president of the nation's supreme court, Vasiliki Thanou-Christophilou, will take over as prime minister in a caretaker government until the elections, in keeping with the constitution. She will be Greece’s first female prime minister.

“The popular mandate I received on Jan. 25 has surpassed its limits, and now the people have to have their voices heard anew,” Tsipras said in a nationally televised address. “With your vote you will decide who will lead Greece, and how, on the difficult road that lies ahead.”

The snap elections, called for Sept. 20, will be the third for debt-weary Greeks this year. Tsipras came to power in January at the head of an anti-austerity campaign, forming a coalition government with the Independent Greeks, a nationalist party.

On July 5, Greeks voted in a referendum on the terms of a third bailout from creditors. More than 60% of voters rejected the deal, only to have Tsipras switch positions and agree last week to a $96-billion bailout with the nation's creditors that kept Greece in the Eurozone and headed off the nation’s probable default on international loans.

The prime minister has been in a difficult spot since he signed off on the bailout package. The extreme left wing of his own radical-left party, Syriza, has mounted a revolt. Led by former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, the rebels have been criticizing the prime minister for breaking his campaign promises.
