#1  My bank has been urging me to use their cell phone app to do my banking. I just smile.

I have a virtual machine on my PC that I have hardened and the only thing I use it for is online banking. I access my online banking via firejail. I have other virtual machines that I use for Linux work and browsing the internet.

'€˜Gay' rape in military under-reported by Pentagon
[Wash Times] Far more military men are being raped by other men than is reported by the Pentagon because of the stigma attached to such sexual assaults, says a new study published by the American Psychological Association.

"Rates of military sexual trauma among men who served in the military may be as much as 15 times higher than has been previously reported, largely because of barriers associated with stigma, beliefs in myths about male rape, and feelings of helplessness," the APA said in releasing the findings Tuesday.

The Defense Department issues a biannual report on sexual assaults. Based on Internet emailed surveys it found that more men than women, in pure numbers, are sexually assault victims. Women make up about 14.5 percent of the 1.4 million active force.

#1  ...but it doesn't fit the narrative. Who needs reality.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 11/04/2015 7:48 Comments || Top||

#2  Unfortunately, most of this stuff doesn't really fit any narrative.

Homo-eroticism is not the same as homo sexuality. Srraight guys, overcome by separation from family and civilian life and depressed or angry because of problems in their command do things they shouldn't (not just this stuff).

Another problem is women forcing themselves on other women (again separation, depression and anger). This is acknowledged by many organizations but not, to my knowledge reported by the media.

One of the factors is that the people who join the military are more 'doer' types than 'repressor' types than in the civilian population.

#3  What's wrong with Rosie Palm, milord?
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 11/04/2015 13:38 Comments || Top||

#4  grom

yes, Rosie is good enough for most men but enot for everyone

the male on male sexual assault incidence is probably no more than 3% may be below 1% but that's still a major ethical and psychological problem and also enough to compromise unit military performance in some cases

Ahmed Chalabi, prominent Shiite politician, dies at 71
[Rudaw] Prominent Shiite politician Ahmed Abdul Hadi Chalabi, a controversial politician who crusaded in Washington for the ouster of Saddam Hussein but later demanded that US troops withdraw, died of a heart attack Tuesday. He was 71.

Haitham al-Jabouri, secretary of parliament's financial panel, which Chalabi had chaired, told news agencies that he was found dead in his bed in his Baghdad home after suffering a heart attack.

Chalabi held many posts in the Iraqi government, including deputy prime minister and oil minister, and was a leading force against the Baath Party of Saddam Hussein. He survived at least one liquidation attempt in 2008 that killed six of his bodyguards.

Educated in mathematics at two of America's most prestigious schools, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
, Chalabi taught as a professor in Beirut before making an unsuccessful foray into banking.

Chalabi spent the years 1992-1996 in the Kurdistan Region trying to topple Saddam with the Iraqi National Council, a group he founded that reportedly received as much as $100 million in funding from Washington.

When the US overthrew the Saddam regime, Chalabi was named one of the 25 members of the Iraqi Governing Council. Under his presidency, the council passes a law that outlawed the Baath party and ostracized its former members in a process that became famous as "de-Baathification."

Chalabi's ties with the US were complicated. He attended US president George W Bush's State of the Union address in 2004 and sat with First Lady Laura Bush. Five months later, however, US forces raided his homes and offices and accused him of passing secret information to Iran, according to the BBC. Chalabi denied the charges.

In 2007, the BBC reports that he was given a post as a mediator between US troops and Baghdad residents in disputes about compensation for damages to homes during security checks.

Bu two years later, according to the BBC, the US links Chalabi to a deadly attack on US marines in 2007 and with ties to Shiite snuffies and Iran.

Chalabi is believed to be survived by his wife Leila, and four children.

Britain
Churchill's secret band of fearless warriors.
[Mail On Line] One of the most extraordinary stories of World War II is also one of the least commonly known, that of a small band of men charged by Winston Churchill himself with carrying out 'a butcher-and-bolt reign of terror' behind enemy lines. Often dosed up on powerful amphetamines, they were an eclectic, wildly unconventional bunch, one of whom favoured the bow-and-arrow as his weapon of choice.

They went initially by a prosaic name, Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF), operating under the aegis of the secretive Special Operations Executive, which had been formed in July 1940 to carry out, in Damien Lewis's words, 'operations seen as too politically explosive, illegal or unconscionable as to be embraced by the wider British establishment'.

#1  'operations seen as too politically explosive, illegal or unconscionable as to be embraced by the wider British establishment'

Didn't seem to bother them to do whole cities like Hamburg or Dresden. I guess the line attributed to Stalin applies - The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic.

#3  My point is how people quibble about 1s and 2s being killed in war, but don't flinch when using technology that they know will take hundreds+. It's war and then on an industrial scale. Somehow the individual kill is personal, but the group is not, all around the same overall event.

The allies could have bombed the trains that delivered victims to the death camps. More could have been done. Hind sight is 20/20.

Chechen warlord releases James Bond-style film trailers
[Daily Mail] Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov has released short film clips for an upcoming Hollywood-inspired movie about his life. The bearded warlord posted the trailers on his personal Instagram page, which has over one million followers.

Kadyrov, who was recently filmed catching a live snake with his bare hands to show he is prepared to fight evil, has been often accused of involvement of torture and dozens of assassinations.

The first clip in the video series shows the Chechen President wearing a military uniform, firing a machine gun into the sky and running in slow-motion through rocky, puddle-ridden terrain as military vehicles encircle him.

At the beginning of the second film, Kadyrov is shown heading off in a boat as the weather worsens. The boat sinks and he is seen struggling to swim to shore. When he gets there he is shown then battling across land and walking across a desert.

Kadyrov revealed in May that the movie is being filmed by a Hollywood director with big stars, but refused to name any of them. He said that the film will be called 'Kto ne ponyal, tot poimet', which can be translated as 'Whoever Doesn't Understand Will Get It.'

Earlier this month, the Chechen warlord released a bizarre video that is supposed to show him catching a crocodile with his bare hands. But the clip is so heavily edited, it that it could be simply a stunt.

#2  seems to me we're reaching chaos theory limits with new hardware, particularly planes. Trying to make too much of a leap instead of easy stages. As the man said, if you make more than 3 assumptions about a plan, you don't know what you're talking about....
Posted by: Squinty McGurque8865 || 11/04/2015 11:18 Comments || Top||

#3  Been watching this one for a while. There is a huge laundry lists of issues with the plane which is why there most likely on be 12 ever built.

Stealth doesn't work as advertised (it was only meant to be stealthy from the front, launch stand off weapons undetected and haul ass out of the area but the front stealth isn't very stealthy)

Radar is sub-par

Engines underpowered and don't have the kick to get the aircraft out of danger after firing

Engines are unreliable

Avionics not functioning as designed

That is just what is known. However, unlike the US the Russians are backing away from a failed stealth program instead of doubling down on it like the US and the F-35.

#6  Maybe we could sell them some F-35s instead?

Would you buy an F-35? F-16V is far cheaper and its radar and fire control put it in the same class as the F-35. Not stealthy but that is what electronic counter measures are for. And with luck, you can burn out the other guy's radar.

India-Pakistan
Woman dies in Multan after being set on fire for "rejecting proposal"
MULTAN: A young Pakistani woman died on Tuesday after a rejected suitor set her ablaze for refusing his marriage proposal, a doctor said.

Sonia Bibi, 20, was admitted to hospital last month, where she told police that her former lover Latif Ahmed had doused her with petrol and set her alight after she turned down his proposal.

Medical staff had originally said she would recover, but a doctor in Multan's Nishtar hospital told AFP that Bibi's injuries had become infected and that she died on Tuesday morning.

About 45 to 50 per cent of her body had been burned in the attack, doctor Naheed Chaudhry, the head of the hospital's burns department told AFP.

The incident took place in a remote village of Multan district in central Punjab province. Police have arrested the 24-year-old suspect.

Bibi had told police that she had fallen out of love with Ahmed, and preliminary investigations suggested he had set her on fire "after she refused to marry him".

Hundreds of women are murdered in Pakistan each year in cases of domestic violence or on the grounds of defending family "honour".

The Aurat Foundation, a campaign group that works to improve the lives of women in Pakistan, says more than 3,000 women have been killed in such attacks since 2008.

Government
Internet firms to be banned from offering unbreakable encryption under new laws
[Telegraph, UK] Companies such as Apple, Google and others will no longer be able to offer encryption so advanced that even they cannot decipher it when asked to, the Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Measures in the Investigatory Powers Bill will place in law a requirement on tech firms and service providers to be able to provide unencrypted communications to the police or spy agencies if requested through a warrant.

Ministers have no plans to ban encryption services because they have an important role in the protection of legitimate online activity such as banking and personal data.

But there is concern over some aspects of so-called end-to-end encryption where only the sender and recipient of messages can decipher them.

[Cameron] told ITV's This Morning: "As Prime Minister I would just say to people 'please, let's not have a situation where we give terrorists, criminals, child abductors, safe spaces to communicate'.

"It's not a safe space for them to communicate on a fixed line telephone or a mobile phone, we shouldn't allow the internet to be a safe space for them to communicate and do bad things."
In other news, all safe manufacturers will be required to retain independent combinations to all safes sold.

Apple, your move.
