Office in Breonna Taylor case acquittes all counts
[ABCNews] A jury in Louisville, Kentucky, has found Brett Hankison, the former police officer charged with recklessly shooting into a neighboring apartment during the course of the raid that ended with the death of Breonna Taylor, not guilty on all three counts.
Now we shall see how teefa behaves when a dem prexident is in office...
Hankison was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing multiple shots into a neighboring apartment that endangered the lives of three people on March 13, 2020.

The jury deliberated for just three hours before returning its verdict.

Hankison fired 10 shots into Taylor's apartment, several of which entered a neighboring apartment where a man, child and pregnant woman were living, according to prosecutors.

Bullets and casings from Hankison's gun were found on the scene and retrieved from a common wall of Taylor and her neighbors.

In an interview with Louisville Metro Police Department's Public Integrity Unit in the weeks following the shooting, Hankison alleged that he saw muzzle flashes and was "certain" at the time he heard an AR-15 rifle firing out of the apartment.

After he heard gunshots, Hankison said he thought Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly had been shot. He said he assumed other officers were hit as well.

"I thought they were just being executed," he said.

‘Putin's Days Are Numbered': John Brennan Speculates About The Fall Of Putin In The Near Future
[Daily Caller] Former CIA Director John Brennan speculated about the fall of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future during a Thursday appearance on MSNBC.

Brennan said Putin and other autocrats censor their countries’ media and use mis- and disinformation to "shape" the minds and actions of their citizens, saying he thinks Putin "fears" the truth. He stated that Russian citizens will learn of the true events happening in Ukraine via social media and turn against him.

"This is where Mr. Putin has a vulnerability. Which is why also I think that, what worries me, is that I think Putin doesn’t see any option for him except to double down. He knows he’s not gonna be able to turn back the clock," he told MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace. "He’s gonna be held to account for the death and destruction of Ukraine and so, therefore, Putin and his henchman around him believe that the only option they have is to continue with this ferocious intensity in trying to devastate Ukraine."

Nazis: Orthodox Jewish father and son pick up arms, ready to defend their Ukraine hometown
[IsraelTimes] 20-year-old Hasidic Jew and his father say they are ’ready to kill Russian soldiers’; force of 400 Ukrainians poised to repel expected attack on Dnipro

Until just a few months ago, David Cherkaskyi was finishing a degree in cybersecurity, praying at his Chabad synagogue, and posting selfies from his travels across the Jewish world.

Now, he’s standing by in his hometown of Dnipro, Ukraine, "ready to kill Russian soldiers."

#2  Caroline Glick calls bullshit on the Russians-bombed-Babi-Yar disinformation campaign

https://carolineglick.com/russia-the-virtue-signalling-west-and-israel/

Russia, the Virtue-Signalling West, and Ukraine
By Caroline Glick

On Wednesday evening, Israeli journalist Ron Ben-Yishai reported from Kyiv that the memorial site at Babi Yar is unharmed. For a full news cycle Tuesday, Ukraine’s leadership from President Volodymyr Zelenskyyy down a report of an alleged Russian bombing of the site where Ukrainian and Nazi forces massacred 33,000 Jews in two days in September 1941 as a means to demonize Russia. They also used the alleged Russian bombing to whitewash Ukraine’s record of massive collaboration with the Nazis in the genocide of Ukrainian Jewry during the Holocaust.

Ukraine’s obscene and cynical exploitation of Babi Yar and the Russian bombing that didn’t happen, must serve as a lesson to Israel that there’s much more gray than black or white in the war between Russia and Ukraine."

Posted by: Rob Crawford || 03/04/2022 15:05 Comments || Top||

#7  Caroline Glick is a smart lady, but it’s not fair to single out Ukraine for turning on their Jews — nearly all the countries of Europe participated enthusiastically. Mussolini’s Italy, Denmark and Sweden, Hungary until the Nazis finally invaded in 1944 refused to participate, but no others come to mind at the moment. And goodness knows Russia is in no position to point fingers, with imperial Russia’s Pale of Settlement, and Soviet Jew-hate couched as anti-Zionism, anti-cosmopolitanism, and anti-religiosity rather than straightforward antisemitism. Not to mention, as Rob Crawford points out, Stalin’s Holodomor.

She does make several good points about the entirely elevated response, and how Putin came to invade in the first place. A lesson for President Putin in relying on the weak response of weak leaders who are not polling well, one he may not recover from.

Hannity: Why don't we just take Putin out ?
[Hot Air] "What is going on with Sean Hannity?" Tom Bevan tweeted this morning. "Two nights ago he suggested a NATO country bomb the Russian convoy, last night he argued in favor of assassinating Putin. Dangerous stuff."

Love it or hate it, it illustrates Fox’s commitment to viewpoint diversity. How many other networks have a Putin apologist hosting at 8 p.m. and a guy who wants to kill Putin hosting at 9?

I think Tucker’s track record on Russia is part of the reason Hannity has been off the rails this week in suggesting countermeasures against Putin. For years he’s had to listen to critics claim that Carlson is more in tune with the MAGA base than he is, especially on foreign policy. Putin’s attack on Ukraine exploded that myth. Hannity’s hearts-and-minds victory over Tucker has evidently left him so exuberant that he’s willing to, uh, start World War III to spike the football.

#5  Why don't we just take Putin out ?

Every problem has a solution that is simple, easy, and usually wrong. It seems to be a shortcoming of the Liberal Mind that, while there is a keen sense for outrage, injustice and wrong-doing, they are unable to see the connections between things. Classic examples are raising the minimum wage to end poverty, and banning internal combustion engines to stop climate change.

But let's play! We just took Putin out with a cruise missile. Now what? Russia is miffed. China is gloating. And Russia's security situation vs NATO is changed not a whit. And that is what led us into this situation in the first place.

Russian ruble now worth less than a penny as wartime sanctions cripple economy
[Washington Examiner] The value of Russia’s ruble has collapsed to less than 1 cent after the United States and other Western countries applied biting sanctions against the Russian economy.

The ruble was down nearly 10% against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday at 115.68 to the dollar. On Monday, after a weekend filled with painful new sanctions, the Russian currency saw an even more precipitous decline of about 30%. The ruble was at about 84 per dollar late Friday before the harshest financial penalties kicked in.

The ruble is now worth even less than an Afghani, which is the currency of Afghanistan, a failed state that has been overrun and is controlled by Taliban militants.

The currency’s free fall was blunted a bit by the Russian central bank’s decision to hike interest rates aggressively, increasing them from 8.5% to 20% in order to bolster the ruble and prevent a run on the banks. Still, people across Russia have been seen lining up at ATMs to withdraw foreign currencies.

Give me a second to put my floaties on, and it is amazing the mechanisms in place to specify a specific currency and tank it almost overnight, but what, in theory, would keep a person from snatching up a whole bunch at penny on the dollar, knowing that, eventually, either it goes back up or Russia is destroyed, which means there are bigger problems going on than loosing a few dollars in a venture? "This will not come without some short-term cost to Beijing if the US chooses to impose sanctions on Chinese banks, but longer term SWIFT’s days as a monopoly are coming to a close. Even though SWIFT manages $400billion of daily transactions to CIPS’ $50billion, CIPS volume has been growing rapidly.

"If anything, the Ukraine conflict and the accelerating expansion of trade with Russia will further increase the size of CIPS, which will be a viable alternative to nations who would otherwise be vulnerable to Washington’s dictates.

"Certainly, as global polarisation increases, China will be less likely to submit reflexively to the current dollar-centric monetary system. If anything, the guarantee of a vast new source of oil, gas, and other strategic commodities from Russia will help to address China’s longstanding comparative disadvantage in these areas relative to the US, who have basically frittered away their unique period of dominance in the immediate aftermath of the Cold War.

"Whatever the ultimate outcome of the war in Ukraine, it will almost certainly accelerate the ongoing shift of power from Washington to Beijing."

#53  Oh dear — another charming Russian! Well if you click your heels when you kiss my hand like my father used to, Econ101forMorons, I shan’t blush and simper.

But life is not a Dickens novel and has no happy endings.

Such a Slavic outlook — of such thoughts is an Anna Karenina unnecessarily made. The poor girl chose to be unhappy, then chose to make herself and all around her even more unhappy; she could have decided to be happy, or at least content, instead. To some extent it goes to how one chooses to define the events of one’s life, and how one chooses to feel about them. The choices are not only, after all, whether the glass is half full or half empty, but there is also the possibility of gratitude that one can has a glass (or can contrive a fluid-containing container, whether temporary or permanent) and can find something nourishing to drink from it, however much or little that might be.

The fact that I exist, and my children, is a proof that Hitler lost, despite my parents’ decidedly challenging childhoods and early adulthoods. The fact that we meet here on the internet and end up discussing in comity is proof that the Soviet totalitarians lost — two wonderful things, indeed. How much happier an ending can there be?

Incidentally, Charles Dickens was an Englishman, my dear, not American. I highly recommend his A Child’s History of England, which I enjoyed as a child.

#54  tw,

Read the great American critic Gary Saul Morson of Northwestern University for a brilliant, radically original interpretation of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. See Morson's brilliant analogy of "gold hidden among sand," and his radical notion that Tolstoy and Dostoevsky subverted the normal, causal progression of the novel with a technique that Morson calls "side-shadowing," ie the opening up of multiple, equally likely potential outcomes of characters' (human) actions.

Morison asserts that the true hero of Anna Karenina is actually Karenin, who literally saves the life of Anna's love-child with Vronsky - the child whom selfish Anna abandons.

Vengeance is MINE, saith the Lord

Let's shell the biggest Nuclear Reactor on the Planet. I am Putin. I am invincible!
[7News]Russia fires on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant that could spark explosion ‘ten times larger than Chernobyl’

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest of its kind in Europe, is on fire after an attack by Russian troops, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar says.

There had been fierce fighting between local forces and Russian troops, Dmytro Orlov said in an online post on Friday, adding that there had been casualties without giving details.

“A threat to world security!!!” Orlov posted to Facebook.

“As a result of relentless shelling by the enemy of the buildings and blocks of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire.

“I demand, stop! Immediately stop shelling the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant point blank.”

The Russian army is “firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Friday.

“Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl!

“Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!”

Firefighters are unable to reach the fire at the nuclear power plant, according to the mayor.

“The Zaporizhzhia Power Plant is notifying of a threat at the first block of the power plant,” he said.

“The fire at the plant is continuing. The firefighters cannot reach the location of the fire.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a tweet it is “aware of reports of shelling at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant”, and that it was in contact with Ukrainian authorities about the situation.

Before the fire broke out, the IAEA released a statement warning that Russian troops were approaching the area and any fighting near the plant could be disastrous.

Ukraine told the IAEA “a large number of Russian tanks and infantry ‘broke through the block-post’ to the town of Enerhodar, a few kilometres from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)”, the IAEA said in a statement.

It added that Ukraine’s regulatory authority had sent them an “urgent letter”, warning that Russian troops were moving directly toward the nuclear plant and the situation was “critical”.

Earlier, the mayor posted to Facebook warning of intense fighting on approach routes to the nuclear power plant.

“Our National Guard fighters are defending,” he said.

“There are victims, but the exact number and condition so far cannot be determined under the circumstances.”

In an earlier post he wrote, “stop shelling the Zaporizhzhia power plant”.

Ukrainian authorities had earlier reported Russian troops were stepping up efforts to seize the plant and had entered the town with tanks.

#5  From the Times of Israel liveblog, as of 12 minutes ago:

Russian troops take control of Ukrainian nuclear plant, authorities say

Ukrainian authorities say a fire at Europe’s biggest nuclear plant ignited by Russian shelling has been extinguished, with Russian forces taking control of the site.

The regional military administration says in a statement that Russian forces took control of the Zaporizhzhia plant in Enerhodar and that operational personnel are ensuring its safe operation.

The administration says the fire at the site was extinguished, and that there is damage to the compartment of reactor No. 1 but it does not affect the safety of the power unit.

Emergency services say there are no casualties.

US bio labs in the Ukraine - Sergey Lavrov said it, so it must be true
[Breitbart] Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that Russia will continue its "military operation" in Ukraine even if a peace deal is made until the process of "demilitarization" and "de-Nazification" is completed to Moscow’s satisfaction and Ukraine is stripped of weapons of mass destruction — including chemical and biological weapons he accused the United States of developing on Ukrainian soil.

"Demilitarization, in the sense of destroying the military infrastructure that threatens us, will be brought to an end, even if we sign a peace agreement. It will necessarily have to include such a clause," Lavrov said from Moscow in an internationally televised interview.

Lavrov began with a rambling speech about the U.S. supposedly using Ukraine in a bid to conquer Europe, similar to those of Napoleon and Hitler, and claimed Russia was invading Ukraine with murderous force to liberate Ukrainians from American and European Union domination so they could chart their own destiny.

Lavrov insisted Russia is acting with care and responsibility according to strict "protocols" regarding nuclear weapons, while "erratic" Ukrainian, NATO, and American officials make irresponsible nuclear threats.

"It is in the minds of the Western politicians that they keep returning to nuclear war," he said. "It’s not in our minds, so we will not allow any provocations to take us out of equilibrium."

"We have data that the Pentagon is preoccupied with chemical and biological installations in Ukraine. The Pentagon built two biological war labs, and they have been developing pathogens there, in Kyiv and in Odessa. Now they are concerned that they may lose control over these labs," Lavrov charged.

#2  How many of those labs were originally Soviet bio labs? As one of the two superpowers of the Cold War, the Soviet Union pursued biological warfare as thoroughly as it did chemical warfare, nuclear warfare, conventional warfare, guerrilla warfare, propaganda warfare. etc

As I recall, the thinking when the Soviet Union fell was that America would pay the salaries of as many of the scientists and engineers as possible thereafter, so that they would not be tempted to sell their services to terrorist and criminal groups. If the labs are still staffed now, it must have worked.

Russian Maj. Gen. Andrei Sukhovetsky Tango Uniform - 'And he ain't gonna jump no more'
[FOX] Ukrainian defense forces killed Russian Maj. Gen. Andrei Sukhovetsky in combat earlier this week, according to Ukrainian officials and Russian media.

The circumstances of the 47-year-old’s death were not immediately clear, but the Kremlin-backed Pravda said he was killed "during a special operation in Ukraine."

According to Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Sukhovetsky deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District last year. He was also the head of the 7th Airborne Division, had served in Syria and received two commendations for bravery from the Kremlin.
49Pan said the General was Spetznez!

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment
[Facebook —Clarice Feldman] Mason Clark, George Barros, and Kateryna Stepanenko

March 3, 4:00 pm EST

The Russian military has continued its unsuccessful attempts to encircle Kyiv and capture Kharkiv. The Russians continued to attack piecemeal, committing a few battalion tactical groups at a time rather than concentrating overwhelming force to achieve decisive effects.

Russian commanders appear to prefer opening up new lines of advance for regiment-sized operations but have been unable to achieve meaningful synergies between efforts along different axes toward the same objectives. They have also continued conducting operations in southern Ukraine along three diverging axes rather than concentrating on one or attempting mutually supporting efforts.

These failures of basic operational art—long a strong suit of the Soviet military and heavily studied at Russian military academies—remain inexplicable as does the Russian military’s failure to gain air superiority or at least to ground the Ukrainian Air Force. The Russian conventional military continues to underperform badly, although it may still wear down and defeat the conventional Ukrainian military by sheer force of numbers and brutality.

Initial indications that Russia is mobilizing reinforcements from as far away as the Pacific Ocean are concerning in this respect. Those indications also suggest, however, that the Russian General Staff has concluded that the forces it initially concentrated for the invasion of Ukraine will be insufficient to achieve Moscow’s military objectives.

Operations to envelop Kyiv remain Russia’s main effort. Russian troops are also continuing three supporting efforts, one to seize Kharkiv, one to take Mariupol and secure the “land bridge” connecting Rostov-on-Don to Crimea, and one to secure Kherson and set conditions for a drive west toward Mykolayiv and Odesa.

The Russian attack on Kyiv likely consists of a main effort aimed at enveloping and ultimately encircling the city from the west and a supporting effort along the axes from Chernihiv and Sumy to encircle it from the east.

Russian forces in the south resumed offensive operations toward Mykolayiv on March 3 after securing Kherson on March 2, but do not appear to pose an imminent danger to Odesa. Russian forces likely seek to force Mariupol to capitulate by destroying critical civilian infrastructure and killing civilians to create a humanitarian catastrophe—an approach Russian forces have repeatedly taken in Syria.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Russian forces opened a new line of advance from Belarus south toward Zhytomyr Oblast, west of Kyiv, as Russian forces attempting to encircle Kyiv from the northwest were driven further west by determined Ukrainian resistance and counterattacks. Russian forces will struggle to complete an encirclement of Kyiv at all if they have to advance along ring roads as far from the city center as those they are now using.

Russian forces on the east bank of the Dnipro River remain unable to secure the important town of Chernihiv or to break through Ukrainian defenses in the northeastern outskirts of Kyiv.

Russian ground forces have remained relatively static near Kharkiv as Russian artillery, air, and missile bombardments wreak devastation in the city. The Ukrainian military indicates that a regiment-sized Russian formation will try to envelop or bypass Kharkiv in the coming days. Similar Russian attempts at such operations elsewhere in Ukraine render the success of such an undertaking at that scale unlikely.

Russian forces are attempting once again to open a line of advance through northern Luhansk Oblast, possibly to assist efforts at Kharkiv or, as the Ukrainian General Staff assesses, to drive on Dnipro and Zaprozhya. The Russian forces currently reported as engaging in that drive are far too small to attack either city successfully and are probably insufficient to sustain a long drive on their own.

Russian troops have surrounded Mariupol and are attacking it brutally to compel its capitulation or destroy it.

The mayor of Kherson conditionally surrendered to the Russians, allowing Russian forces to renew their advance on Mykolayiv, which they have done. The Ukrainian military nevertheless reportedly defeated an attempted Russian air assault to take an airfield near Mykolayiv.

#1  Time. Why rush in. Let those who want to leave leave. Holdouts will soon run out of materials of all sorts of things. Let the media bloviate. People will soon tire of Pete and re-Pete. Soon complete encirclement cutting off western supply lines. Time. Putin berated and derided will move steadily on. Then Biden slavish followers blindly proclaim in any discussion because he is buddies with Trump. I might add 10 Wuhan type research labs in Ukraine of which seven Putin has destroyed. I can hear the Democrats and Soros squirm. This is a major financial setback for them and the swamp.

Military summary of the LDNR. The situation on the line of contact on March 3 (updated)
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[NewsFrontInfo] 23:37 Kiev Nazis shelled the village of Mineralnoye in the DPR. According to preliminary data, a civilian born in 1999 suffered.

23:02 In the city of Shchastya, liberated from the Nazis, in the LPR, the prosecutor's office of the republic is already working. Law enforcement officers are ready to accept complaints from local residents about Ukrainian militants, in order to then send them to the European Court of Human Rights.

22:54 The Nazis will not be able to leave Mariupol. The Mariupol-Dnepropetrovsk highway is under the control of the People's Militia of the DPR and the Russian army.

22:44 The People's Militia of the DPR liberated all settlements in front of Mariupol from the eastern and northeastern directions. The Nazis, meanwhile, are turning the city into a fortified area. The grouping, which was advancing from the Crimea, stopped after the capture of Berdyansk. This was not caused by enemy resistance, but by the desire of the command to secure the northern flank of the advancing group, using the Dnieper as a natural barrier. Her task is to block the city. They hope to avoid the storming of Mariupol and resolve the issue of liberating the city through negotiations. In this way, human casualties can be avoided.

22:04 In the 15 days that have passed since the beginning of a new escalation in the Donbass, 26 people have died in the DPR. Another 105, including children, received injuries of varying severity. During this time, the Nazis opened fire on the republic 766 times, fired 9174 ammunition.

They damaged 500 residential buildings, 194 civil infrastructure facilities, including 11 medical institutions, 17 educational institutions, 11 social security facilities, 12 critical infrastructure facilities, electricity, water and gas supply facilities. The Zuevskaya TPP came under fire twice, the cooling tower and the boiler house building, 82 vehicles were damaged.

21:40 The LPR authorities continue to put the liberated settlements in order. In many ways, such tasks can be dangerous. So, an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic was injured when he was inspecting a mined area in Stanytsia Luhanska. He has already received the necessary assistance and taken to the hospital.

20:33 Ukrainian punishers continue to fire at the settlements of the republics of Donbass. Under attack was the settlement of Zolote-5. The Nazis used Grad multiple rocket launchers. The fire damaged 13 apartments.

20:10 The People's Militia of the DPR stormed the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the village of Andreevka south of Volnovakha. In addition, the defenders of the republic captured trophies: four Ukrainian tanks.

18:32 At the moment, the forces of the People's Militia of the DPR have already liberated 36 settlements from the Nazis. Now all attention is focused on the military operation in the cities of Volnovakha and Mariupol.

17:56 Updated data on the tragedy in Yasinovataya: the death toll has risen to two people. In addition to the woman, another person was killed under fire.

17:45 A resident of Starobilsk, who was recently completely liberated from the Nazis and took control of the forces of the People's Militia of the LPR, told how the mayor of the city is sowing panic. He gathers people and denigrates the defenders of the republic and the Russian military. Anatoliy Anikiyev, the administrator of the Starobilsk – Peaceful Protest group, helps him in this. They film tank-jumping demonstrations and later distribute them to the Ukrainian media.

17:24 The forces of the People's Militia of the DPR are already in the village of Vinogradnoye in the suburbs of Mariupol. The Azov Nazis refuse to negotiate and use the civilian population as human shields. They posted grenade launchers and snipers on the roofs of high-rise buildings. The defenders of the republic cannot use serious weapons, since the lives of the civilian population are at stake.

14:57 The forces of the People's Militia of the LPR continue to liberate the republic from the Nazis, and find "gifts" that the West and the EU gave to Kiev in abandoned positions. The defenders of Donbass already have a large amount of foreign weapons at their disposal.

14:50 In Kramatorsk, people with Right Sector badges broke into the OSCE office and "wrung out" three mission vehicles. The militants are armed and very dangerous, all residents of the city are asked to be careful.

12:58 Ukrainian Nazis do not allow civilians to leave the settlements of Mariupol and Volnovakha. The cities are already in a state of humanitarian catastrophe, however, any attempts by the People's Militia of the DPR to organize a corridor for the evacuation of people are suppressed by militants - the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin.

12:46 The forces of the People's Militia of the DPR are going to take the Ukrainian Nazis into the operational ring in the area of the cities of Donetsk and Gorlovka - the official representative of the NM DPR Eduard Basurin.

12:24 The outskirts of the city of Gorlovka in the DPR remain under fire from Ukrainian punishers. In the microdistrict "Quarter 88" after the shelling, a house caught fire. Information about the victims is being specified.

China-Japan-Koreas
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Calls on U.S. Govt. to Recognize Taiwan as Independent
[Breitbart] Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called upon the United States to recognize Taiwan as an independent nation during his visit to the island off the coast of China.

On Thursday, Pompeo publicly declared that the U.S. government should take the "long-overdue" step and recognize the freedom of Taiwan.

"It is my view that the U.S. government should immediately take necessary, and long-overdue, steps to do the right and obvious thing, that is to offer the Republic of China (Taiwan) America’s diplomatic recognition as a free and sovereign country," Pompeo said in a statement.

Pompeo said this would be a recognition of an already "existent reality."

"This is not about Taiwan’s future independence, it is about recognizing an unmistakable, already existent reality," asserted Pompeo. " That reality is this, as many of your past and present leaders have made clear, there is no need for Taiwan to declare independence because it’s already an independent country."

"Its name is the Republic of China (Taiwan)," he continued. "The people and government of the United States should simply recognize this political, diplomatic, and sovereignty reality. The Taiwanese people deserve the world’s respect for a free, democratic, and sovereign country."

#1  This is the type of response and geo-political action that should be taken as a result of events in the Ukraine. Will it happen? No, of course not. Not in a thousand years of a Biden administration.

#2  It would force China's hand and make it lose face and most likely strengthen Xi's position before the September meeting of the CCP.

I would wait until after that and if Xi is still in power, declare it and then do a complete decouple from the direct Chinese manufacturing pipeline. Just make sure there are other sources that you have put in place to pick up the slack.

It would hurt, badly but not as much as it would to China that is in a slow collapse of its economy. China would cease to exist.

#3  Lately I've been very disappointed with Mr. Pompeo. Sympathetic as I am to the idea of Taiwan's independence, I think this is as recklessly provocative an action as promising Ukrainians that they could join NATO. Better to quietly and privately let Xi know, in no uncertain terms, that his navy would end up at the bottom of the South China Sea if he tries to invade Taiwan. My understanding is that the concept of "face" is very important in that part of the world. So let Xi keep his face as long as he stays in his place.

Germany charges Russian citizen over plot to assassinate Chechen dissident
[IsraelTimes] Commissioned by a Chechen security official in 2020, the hit was meant to silence an exiled Chechen blogger in Sweden who is the brother of the intended victim, prosecutors say

A Russian man has been charged with plotting to kill a Chechen dissident living in Germany on the orders of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov,
...who just sent a a whole bunch of super special Chechen forces and an assassination team to Ukraine, where they were promptly massacred, I seem to recall to the last man...
prosecutors said Thursday.

The suspect, named as Valid D., is accused of planning the murder commissioned by the state, carrying out shooting exercises with the intended hitman and spying on the target.

"A member of the security apparatus of Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov commissioned the accused Valid D. with the logistical organization of the killing of an opposition member" in the first half of 2020, prosecutors said.

The charges come amid global outrage over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has sparked unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow.

The suspect was arrested last year and has since been in pre-trial detention.

According to German media reports, the target was Mokhmad Abdurakhmanov, the brother of exiled Chechen blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov, who lives in Sweden.

"The state-ordered killing was intended in particular to silence the brother of the targeted victim," the prosecutors said.

Valid D. is accused of procuring a weapon, selecting a hitman to carry out the murder and arranging for him to be brought to Germany.

He also allegedly spied on the target and his home in search of a suitable scene of the crime, as well as carrying out shooting exercises with the intended killer.

The man picked to carry out the murder claims to have accepted the offer only out of fear of reprisals, the prosecutors said.

Germany and Russia have been at odds over the years over several burning issues, including cyberattacks and a string of espionage cases that Berlin has blamed on Moscow.

A German court in December sentenced a Russian man to life in prison for shooting dead a former Chechen commander in a Berlin park in broad daylight, a murder prosecutors say was ordered by Moscow.

Kadyrov, a former rebel-turned-Kremlin-ally, has given his backing for Putin’s attack on Ukraine, sending his notorious fighters to the country.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel is a close ally of the US, yet has not supported the US over Ukraine.
[Twitter]

Recall that Mr. Cohen was secretary of defense under President Bill Clinton, over two decades ago. It is not clear to me why his disappointment should matter to anyone now, particularly the leadership of a foreign country. It is clear why proudly biased British-Iranian CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour would seek attention by tweeting it, though.

Nonetheless, since this tweet on March 1st, Israel did support America vis a vis Russia, so none of this matters beyond the few days of anti-Israel agitation.

Please see comment #15 below.

#1  Israel sold weapons to the Ukraine Nazis. That doesn't sound like something a close ally would do. That doesn't sound like anything a Jewish government would do, either.

#2  So Israel won't join in sanctions.
Neither will about 5 billion people around the world who will be delighted to trade for Russian oil, and gas, and wheat, and gold, and potash palladium nickel alumina titanium coal etc

How do they love thee, Russia? Let us count the ways:
China - that's 1.4 billion people
India - another 1.3 billion people
Turkey - add another 82 million pop.
Brazil - gee they're pretty big: 213 million pop.
Egypt - wow, over 106 million pop.
Iran - now buying Russian arms thanks to Joe "Help the Iranians!" Bidet - add another 86 million pop.
Indonesia - leapin' lizards! 275 million pop.
South Africa - with much gratitude for support during the anti-apartheid struggle, 57 million pop.
Uganda - along with Iran, one of many African customers for tens of billions in Russian arms exports 44 million pop.
... the rest of the African arms importing nations: 1 billion pop.

Supporting the US sanctions are maybe 1 billion people tops
Vs. 5 billion sitting it out.

CHINA MEDIA GOADS RUSSIA TO USE CIPS OVER SWIFT
BY JEFF PAO
Asia Times
March 1, 2022

Russia can use China’s Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) for its international trade after its major banks were removed from the US dollar-based SWIFT payment system in response to the Ukraine war, according to Chinese state media reports.

Several Chinese researchers were quoted by Xinhua and the Communist Youth League Central Committee’s website as saying Russia would not be seriously hurt by the Western world’s SWIFT ban as it had developed its own payment system – the System for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS) – since the Crimea crisis in 2014.

They said CIPS together with SPFS would continue to grow and become an important global interbank payment system.

Some Chinese commentators speculated Russia would be able to survive the recent round of sanctions imposed by the West over the Ukraine issue as it was not holding a lot of US dollar assets, but mainly gold, oil and foreign currency.

European countries would also be hit by the SWIFT ban as the cost for them to buy Russia’s energy would increase, they said.
