March 18 (Reuters) - Russia's central bank kept its key interest rate at 20% on Friday following last month's massive emergency hike and said it would start buying OFZ government bonds, warning of an imminent spike in inflation and a looming economic contraction.
Bank of Russia policymakers held a scheduled rate meeting after more than doubling the key rate to 20% from 9.5% in a one-off action on Feb. 28 to support financial stability and shore up the rouble. The currency had crashed to record lows as Western countries imposed sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

Funny what successful missile strikes, an interest payment and help from India and China can do for a currency. The ruble has soared on the back of these positive developments. It's almost back to where it was pre-invasion in February.

Russian ruble to dollar rate over the past 2 months. According to that link, the ugliest closing rate was 136.7 on March 7, so Whearong the Low-priced1146‘s 154 on that date must have occurred some time during that day.
This is why I leave all the investing stuff to Mr. Wife, and have promised to stick to basic stock and bond funds after he dies. I started reading my father’s Barrons when I was still a child, but it turns out that reading about a thing is not the same as being able to use it.

In terms of strategy this is no different from Operation Linebacker during the two weeks prior to the Jan-1973 Paris Peace Accords. The Russians are being very methodical and focused on their war aims in the East and along the coast in the South. They will keep crushing Ukraine with hypersonic missiles until they achieve their goals. They don't need to occupy Ukraine or even invade Kiev. From 2 hrs ago:
"Moscow and Kyiv are coming close to an agreement on "critical" issues regarding the invasion of Ukraine, according to the Turkish foreign minister. The French are moving in to replace American and British companies that have exited Russia. Investors are snapping up Russian bonds. The ruble is going to rise and may even be backed by Russia's huge gold reserves. India's now accepting rubles as they buy Russian oil, arms, metals and other exports. Having and using hypersonic missiles changes everything.

More missile strikes will strengthen Russia's negotiating position further and persuade more and more countries to avoid sanctions and do business with Russia.
China, India and France are on board already. Unsentimental nations that see through the propaganda are correctly judging that Russia's winning and that their missiles will bring this to a conclusion soon. The French will make huge profits.
"The French retail tycoons behind Decathlon have been setting out plans for a major Russian expansion of their multi-billion euro DIY chain.
Leroy Merlin, owned by the Mulliez family - which with a €42bn (£35bn) fortune ranks among the richest on the planet - wants to fill the vacuum left by western rivals such as Ikea after they pulled out of Russia.

Just watched the latest Task and Purpose YouTube video on the "Fog of War" in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian Army in the East has reached a decision point on whether to withdraw to the West while/if they can still move in order to maintain their combat power. The Russian holding attacks appear to have have fixed the Eastern Ukrainian units into place...and the encirclement/destruction of the Ukrainian military is the apparent objective. Hazards if Ukrainians stay near their depots and risk encirclement...and huge risk if the Ukrainians attack to the west to escape the encirclement and get bottled up crossing the river...only to fall in on an uncertain supply and ammo situation in the West. The Russians want them to move into the kill zones at the river, but if they stay they will be pounded by heavy artillery. A crisis is coming...Zelensky can see it.

Testing and Evaluation of their own capabilities I guess. It looks like the Russians are learning lessons and applying them. They are firing incompetent generals and forcing the others to lead from the front, thus the high attrition rate amongst the two and three stars... And now they have NCOs and first line officers that know the deal and can improve their training base after this war is over.
We can't seem to fire the incompetent Generals, ever...and we have few that have led from the front since the first gulf war. And now the vax purge caused us to lose more qualified combat soldiers than what the losses Russians have likely suffered so far in combat...
I have hopes that we can learn lessons from this war, but from what I hear from my EUCOM friends we are little more than spectators. Same happened in Afghanistan, we didn't document the bad and realign to ensure it doesn't ever happen again...just covered it up. Same will happen here. I am depressed.
Austin and Milley need to go, as well as Jake Sullivan. Sullivan authored this set of disasters and Milley and Austin just set there playing with themselves.

I like the handful of Russians I've met, and I agree with pretty much everyone here that we ought to keep our guys out of this. What amuses me about our trolls is their unwillingness to concede in the slightest way that things might not be working out quite the way Vlad had expected. He said he wanted to demilitarize Ukraine - not occupy it, not rule it, not conquer it. Most importantly, he wanted to cleanse the east of the Ukrainian thugs who've terrorized the Donbas for 8 years, and build on this foundation to drive westward and secure a land bridge to Crimea. He's done so.

I would argue that this is Plan B and it *is* going rather well. When things jumped off, there were two special forces operations - a decapitation strike on the government and an attempt to seize Gostomel airport to create an air bridge for the assault on Kiev. Both failed. Ha-ha stupid Rus, right? Maybe not. Maybe more like heads I win/tails you lose.
If either of these ops were successful, it would give Russia a quick lead in the game, like throwing a Hail Mary on the first play. But even if they fail, both ops tie down troops and resources that are needed elsewhere which gives the Russians a bigger jump in the north, east, and especially the south. That is the main course. The airport and the government were just gravy.
I believe the failure of "Plan A" to achieve its primary goals is the source of the "Russians expected the Ukrainians to roll over" meme.

People should not hail this as some great strategic victory. Instead it is the harbinger of corporates as sovereign entities, with their own foreign policies and charters superceding the interests of their parent nations. Even today, the $ multi-billion corp is answerable to no lawmaker or court, owns it's own officials and maybe even senators and representatives. Russia will not see this as the innocent volunteering of 'help' by private entities. They will pay dearly later. But even otherwise, the globalist aim of undermining the nation state and superceding of legislature decided policies by transnational corporates is ultimately being fulfilled.

Pro tip for foreign volunteers: leave your mobile phones at home
"A cruise missile attack on a Ukrainian military base housing foreign fighters was launched after Russian forces hacked into phones used by British personnel, security sources have claimed. Sources also fear some of the volunteers may have been 'turned' by Moscow's agents who have 'subverted' them by exploiting their credit card debts.
It has led to calls from the British intelligence community for the volunteers to be dissuaded from heading to the region. One source pointed the finger at Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, blaming her for encouraging Britons to volunteer. The source said: 'It is not safe. They are badly led, badly equipped and badly compromised by Russians.'

For years, Ohman said, he took no salary and had no paid staff as he fulfilled direct requests from front-line units with an annual budget of less than $200,000. Since the invasion last month, more than $20 million has poured in from within Lithuania, a country of 2.8 million residents. He is dispatching a convoy to the border every four or five days.
With a cellphone held against a days-old beard, Ohman orders military gear by the ton from around Europe, China, Israel. "I tell them all the time: 10,000 euros can be more deadly than a million if you know how to spend it," he growled between phone calls.
Ohman has filled one donated warehouse on the outskirts of Poland’s capital, Warsaw. Another in Vilnius, provided by a Lithuanian transport company, has become a drop-off site for locals wanting to give.
"These will work," one volunteer declared on a recent afternoon when a truck arrived at the Vilnius warehouse with 800 pairs of new steel-toed boots and 1,000 fleece jackets still in the wrapper, all donated by a hunting goods retailer.
A forklift unloaded the cases, depositing them next to 14 pallets of IV saline solutions and boxes filled with 13,000 trauma tourniquets and 200 satellite phones.
A local marketing company has launched a fundraising campaign for the group. And a group of Rotary Club volunteers makes calls to military suppliers in surrounding countries.
"Everything in Europe is selling out," said Zemyna Bliumenzonaite, a Blue and Yellow staffer. "But we are getting more requests than ever."
She held out her phone to show some of the texts she gets from soldiers in Ukraine. One named "Kruk" asked for 1,000 tourniquets and 40 individual first aid kits. She tells him they will be in the next convoy.

The US and EU have a policy of coercion, threats, hijacks of international transactions that hurt populations rather than regimes. It is a conveniently cruel attitude adopted by only truly evil cliques. Like killing off all bison just to starve native Americans and gloat over the 'masterful strategy' as 'victors'. This attitude continues to this day.
If the eastern nations do conspire together to chip away at that capacity and create a bloc to counter the overbearing influence of the west, no one can grudge them that. American peeps should instead revolt against their new establishment which is turning this age old policy of coercion and economic threats inward, toward Republicans and classic liberals and everybody who doesn't want a gay rape paradise run by afromarxist pimps and crazy women.

Having lived and worked as during the Nixon/Ford version of issued wages and prices freezes. Which were applied in the hopes of halting inflation. Simply put.... It mainly helped Nixon more to get re-elected, than is solved inflation.

CNBC reports that delivery drivers are pressuring Amazon to pay its Flex program drivers more in order to accommodate currently surging gas prices. Approximately 50 delivery and rideshare drivers protested outside an Amazon warehouse near Los Angeles earlier this week.

Regardless of how many SIMs you swap, cell phones pass a lot of device identity data that would let anyone paying attention see that some phones were not originally sold in the area where they were being used. That would be red flag city.
