#2 Interesting pictures at that page further down. Normandy-style tank obstacles all over the place, minelaying at the beaches. They have supposedly large amphib ships there. I'd still expect most to arrive initially over the air via helicopters.

A WW2 style over-the-beach invasion may end up looking like a WW2 style beach invasion in the Pacific. Peleliu, Guam, Iwo Jima come to mind. Yes they were eventually successful, but they also required weeks of preparatory bombing and lots of naval gunfire. And there were still massive casualties. Now factor in the increased quality and prevalence of anti-armor and MANPADs available in the defense, and the poor quality so far of Russian equipment and poorly trained personnel, and it could be a bloodbath. If the Russians want to force a landing, they will do so. But the cost could be the operational destruction of the Black Sea fleet's Russian Naval Infantry to a stub.

If they were to play it smart, they'd simply grind down the coast from the east and Kherson, and have their Rus separatists in Moldova launch small attacks from the west side. Supplied overland by the Crimea garrisons.

This whole thing does not look well thought out at all.

#3 Whether the Rus actually do it or not, the threat of an amphib assault forces Ukraine to mount a defense. This ties up men and materiel that could be used elsewhere.

In the meantime, the Russians will

Likely accompanied by a feint landing and some naval missile strikes to support the ground troops. Sounds like a plan to me.

#4 The last Russian amphibious landing took place in early 1943. It took the Soviets seven months to make their objective seven miles away.

Recall, naval infantry units are by regulation a fleet commander's personal guard to be deployed by the fleet commander alone.

Not even Putin can order the Black Sea Fleet Commander's personal guard to battle without the Black Sea fleet commander's assent.

They are not like our beloved marines.

Even if hostilities ended this morning, the 'land bridge' to the Crimea and a Northward Crimean expansion appear to be likely goals achieved.
