Floyd Bennett Field migrants leaves NYC'ers fuming over reported spike in robberies, scams and an arrests near shelter
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Brooklyn residents and cops are left fuming after a perceived spike in crime from their newest neighbors - migrants at the Floyd Bennett Field shelter.

Nearly 2,000 migrants were moved to the isolated temporary shelter in mid-November as the city ran out of housing options.

Local residents told the New York Post there has been an increase in shoplifting, panhandling, scams and street prostitution since the migrants were moved there.

New York City is currently caring for over 68,000 migrants and with hotels and other accommodation supplies reaching capacity, options are increasingly limited. More than 116,000 migrants have flooded the city since April 2022 when southern governors started to bus them to northern cities to help deal with the crisis at the US-Mexico border.

Residents told the Post migrants from the Floyd Bennett shelter have been running a scam along Flatbush Avenue near Kings Plaza, where they walk into traffic and pretend to be hit before asking drivers for $500.

'They're scaring people saying "You just hit me, and I'm going to report it if you don't give me the money,"' the unnamed cops said.

President of the Bergen Beach Civic Association, Sal Calise, told the Post he nearly was a victim of the scheme on January 6 when a man walked into traffic, causing him to swerve and nearly hit a parked car.

'I looked back in my rear-view mirror, and he’s turning around laughing at the migrants sitting on the corner," Calise said.

'They had all their phones in their hands like they’re ready to film. I thought "This is obviously a set up".'

Calise said the scam was discussed at an association meeting on Tuesday, but police told the Post no one has formally reported the scam so they have nothing to act on.

There have been five arrests at the center since it opened.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
USAF Officer Wins Miss America Crown
[Epoch Times] U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Madison Marsh won the Miss America title on Jan. 14 at the Walt Disney Theater in Orlando, Florida.

2nd Lt. Marsh, who represented the state of Colorado, is the first active-duty Air Force officer ever to compete and win the title. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The 22-year-old Arkansas native competed for the Miss America crown in Florida on Sunday—an event featuring several phases including a public interview, as well as evening gown and fitness stages. She was one of the 51 contestants who participated in the event.
Marsh is a National Truman Scholar, two-time National Astronaut scholar, eight-time Dean's List at the Air Force – three-times Superintendent's List, a National Rhodes finalist, certified private pilot, and a black belt in taekwondo.

#2  In case you wanted to see her out of uniform

(sorry guys, didn't mean to get your hopes up)
Posted by: Mercutio || 01/15/2024 8:40 Comments || Top||

#3  ...I'm truly sorry to be a bit of a wet blanket here, but I've got to point out a few things.

First, genuine congratulations to LT Marsh - whatever you feel about the MAP, it ain't easy to win. She's clearly smart as a whip, and she's going to be a superb spokesperson for the State of Colorado and the USAF.

Trouble is, I respectfully feel she never should have been in the doggoned contest in the first place.

She got her commission last year from the USAF Academy, which means she incurred at least a 6 year obligation. She then got the slot at Harvard Kennedy - again, a hell of an achievement...but one that takes approximately two years where she's at school instead of at a line unit, and now she's just gotten another year away from doing her job and being deployable.

So, she can't go back to anything resembling military duties until roughly January 2027. And this is in an Air Force with gaping holes in its manning. And in all honesty, I have doubts the USAF will hold her to what should be her new separation date of 2032 should she decide to leave.

I have no doubt that she went by the book in requesting permission to do all of this, and it was granted by the book. I simply feel that in the current manning environment, allowing someone to make a run at the Miss America title was not a good call.

A few years back USAF killed the Tops In Blue show troupe because while guys were on their third and fourth deployments, frequently back to back, these folks were all-singing and all-dancing around the world...and at best it was resented, because the units they came from still had to provide the same number of bodies for deployments. I believe this should have been the way here.

#5  ...or an Annapolis graduate who gets a reserve gig to play in the NFL?

I'm so old I remember the Playboy issue of women in uniform. The Air Force and Navy women faced disciplinary actions, the Army one was already out of the service, and the Marines took no action. Being the 'old days', the Commandant was asked why the female marine didn't receive any disciplinary action. He replied that he didn't see it as a problem, but if there was a magazine called Ugly there might be.

Arizona hot air balloon crash kills four
[MAIL] A 28-year-old nurse from Indiana has been identified as one of the four people killed in a hot air balloon crash in the Arizona desert.

Katie Bartrom's family revealed she died in Sunday morning's crash that left four dead and one seriously injured.

Bartrom's mother told ABC Arizona that the young woman, who hailed from Indiana, loved skydiving and adventure.

Police said the aircraft crashed into the desert around five miles north of the city of Eloy at around 7.50am.

Thirteen people - eight skydivers, four passengers and a pilot - had been in the balloon, according to Eloy Mayor Micah Powell.

#1  As was mentioned in the comments; 'eight way formation jump' resulting in simultaneous reduction of roughly 1.5 tons of cargo, likely caused the basket to bolt skyward, resulting in balloon collapse and streamer.

#2  I have absolutely no idea what that means, Besoeker, but I’m sure you’re right.

#3  /\ Balloon inflation requires both hot air and a constant weight applied to ensure uniform inflation. Constant weight, much like that of a parachute canopy. Without the gravitational pull of the heavy basket, tension of the suspension lines is lost and the balloon begins to fold or streamer.

If you have a parachute malfunction and cut away the main canopy to deploy a reserve, the malfunctioning canopy simply folds and slips away.

The commenter's theory anyway. Sounded valid to me.

Mullah killed in Chechnya in front of his own child
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited
[KavkazUzel] A mullah in the village of Voskresenovsky, Shelkovsky district of Chechnya, was stabbed to death in front of a child. According to sources, the motive could be blood feud. The opposition channel denied this version.

The murder became known from a video distributed in WhatsApp chats, shot by the alleged killer in the first person. "Caucasian Knot" does not publish the video for moral reasons. The video shows a man approaching a car, starting a conversation, attacking a couple of meters from the frightened boy, getting into a car, presumably an Infinity, and driving away.

According to telegram channels, the person killed was Abdurakhim Gakaev, born in 1968. Before his death, he received more than ten blows with a knife, writes the Mash Gor channel. The motive could be blood feud, the report says, but the details and circumstances that could lead to the blood feud are not given in the report.

The Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for the Republic confirmed the fact of murder. According to the department, the murder occurred in the courtyard of a private house. The attacker stabbed the 54-year-old man several times. He died on the spot. “A criminal case has been opened regarding the murder of a resident of the village of Voskresenovskoye (part 1 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation),” says a message published on the department’s website.

The report also said that investigators are establishing a motive for the crime.

Telegram channels covering the actions of security forces indicate the name of the suspect. Turpal-Ali Sh, born in 1993, resident of Gudremes, was put on the wanted list, reported, in particular, the telegram channel "ChP-Kavkaz". According to one version, it was a “blood feud.”

According to one of the channels opposed to the authorities of Chechnya, the suspect in the murder of Turpal-Ali 10 years ago turned to a healer (using alternative medicine methods) in Dagestan. Five years later, he began to seek treatment for witchcraft, so Turpal-Ali became a “patient” of a man whom he killed, deciding that he was the same sorcerer.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that in Chechnya, since July 2019, the persecution of residents for occultism has intensified. The state television channel "Grozny" regularly publishes reports in which local residents repent of practicing witchcraft. On October 29, 2022, security forces detained Khasukha Suliev, a resident of the Gudermes district of Chechnya, after which the head of the Center for Islamic Medicine, Adam Elzhurkaev, reprimanded him for engaging in occultism.

TV spots with public repentance of sorcerers in Chechnya are only part of the practice of public apologies, which, at the instigation of the head of the republic Ramzan Kadyrov, is practiced in other regions. You can read more about cases of forced apologies in the Caucasian Knot reference book “Fashion for apologies: from Chechnya to the very outskirts” and in the “Chronicle of public apologies in the Caucasus”.

Let us also recall that the Chechen authorities regularly report on the reconciliation of blood families through a specially created reconciliation commission. Reconciliation of bloodlines often occurs under pressure from the authorities, although in such cases hostility may actually continue, President of the Assembly of Peoples of the Caucasus Ruslan Kutaev noted earlier.

The Chechen authorities created a commission for national reconciliation in 2010. On October 17, 2011, the head of the republic,  Ramzan Kadyrov, said that the commission had been abolished as unnecessary, but the next day, a new commission was created under the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Chechnya, which, as the muftiate explained, would also deal with the reconciliation of bloodlines.

Economy
‘It's the economy, stupid'‐The real reason so many young adults are living with their parents
[Creditnews] Young adults used to dream of moving out of their parents’ homes and into their own apartments, but living alone has become a luxury not everyone can afford.

According to a recent study by Intuit Credit Karma, 31% of Gen Zers are living with their parents because they can’t afford to rent or buy their own place. Overall, 11% of American adults still live at home with their parents.

"The current housing market has many Americans making adjustments to their living situations, including relocating to less-expensive cities and even moving back in with their families," said Courtney Alev, a consumer financial advocate at Intuit Credit Karma.

Even young adults who live alone are reconsidering their living arrangements because costs are too high. About a quarter (27%) of Gen Zers reported that they could no longer afford rent and 25% said they’ll have to move back in with family to make ends meet.

Millennials are in the same boat: 30% say rent is unaffordable, and 25% are thinking about moving back in with their parents.

The research is consistent with a 2021 study conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, which showed that one in three adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents.

Radiation fears in the Grand Canyon: Uranium mine opens just miles from national attraction - as experts warn it could pose health and ecological hazard
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A new uranium mine has opened near the Grand Canyon despite experts warning that it could wreak havoc on the environment and local water sources.
"experts"
A 20-year law that banned mining on the uranium-rich land surrounding the national park expired in 2023, allowing the Pinyon Plain Mine to open in December - about 10 miles south of the Grand Canyon's southern brim.

The mine's proximity to the national park has sparked pushback from environmental activists who fear that radioactive chemicals will contaminate the water and pose a health hazard to people who live in the area, as well as tourists.

The Havasupai Tribe has repeatedly tried to prevent the mine from opening, arguing that it will contaminate local groundwater and threaten cultural and spiritual religious sites.

#5  There are active and inactive uranium mines all over the southwest. A lot of them are quite near, or actually in, parks and other public areas where folks might hike or camp. There's always signage saying exactly where the mine is and not to enter them.

Every one I have seen during my hikes is also severely plugged and gated off.

Wyoming goes nuclear: Cowboy State is set to see uranium mining boom as prices soar and lawmakers propose ban on Russian imports to end Putin's stranglehold on the rare element
Thanks, Hillary.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Uranium mining operations in Wyoming are gearing up for a potential dramatic expansion in operations, as a proposed ban on Russian imports drives up prices for the crucial nuclear reactor fuel.

Uranium spot prices hit $92.50 this week, the highest since 2007 and up more than 84 percent from a year ago, according to data shared with DailyMail.com by market-tracking firm UxC, LLC.

NBC News Reports ‘Deep State' Plot to Facilitate a ‘Military Coup' Against Trump Amidst Fear for Alleged ‘Retribution' if Re-Elected
[Gateway] Concerns are intensifying among far-left national security "experts" and Pentagon insiders over the possibility that former President Donald Trump might leverage the U.S. military to enforce his political will if he returns to the Oval Office.

In a detailed report, NBC News inadvertently admitted the existence of a "Deep State," allegedly working to facilitate a military coup against former President Trump if he is freely and fairly elected by Americans.

The NBC article paints a portrait of a left-wing plot to disrupt military allegiance to civilian control.

Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist wrote, "NBC reports the left is plotting ways to have military not be under civilian control. This dangerous and unconstitutional usurpation of power is being framed by NBC as good because it will undermine Trump if he is freely and fairly elected by Americans."

UK to send 20,000 troops to Nato's largest military exercise since the Cold War to practice repelling an invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces as Grant Shapps warns 'the foundations of the world order are being shaken to their core'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Britain will send 20,000 service personnel to one of Nato's largest military exercises since the Cold War to practice repelling an invasion by Vladimir Putin's forces.

The troops will be joined by one of the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers, eight warships, as well as the RAF's F-35 lightning attack aircraft, which will practice flying in imitated conflict scenarios.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will announce the deployment of Army, Navy and RAF members to the 31-nation drill across Europe during a speech in London on Monday.

He will say the contribution to the Steadfast Defender exercise will provide 'vital reassurance against the Putin menace' as he warns the West stands at a 'crossroads'.

The war games come after ministers announced a further £2.5billion support package to Ukraine and the RAF airstrikes, with the US, on the Houthis in Yemen.
