Caveat Emperor
Lisa Schiffren, "The Corner" @ National Review

So much for the Emperor's VIP Club's high class goods. With her three diamond rating, "Kristen" aka "Ashley Youmans" aka "Ashley Alexandra Dupre" does not appear "highly educated," "accomplished," "sophisticated," or of "good family," as the online website claimed about it's high priced merchandise. Indeed, she is a pretty 22 year old woman with a nice body from a broken and perhaps abusive family in New Jersey. She didn't know her father. She dropped out of high school in 10th grade, ran away, and, in the course of living with various men, came to be interested in music. Now she wants to be a singer. How'd she get into high end prostitution — the "escort" business, as both she and the New York Times call it? Well, the guy she was living with walked out, (because she was upset about various children he had fathered), and she couldn't pay the rent. She considered working in a friend's restaurant, or moving home, but.... hey, this came up.

It's time to put to rest the enduring myth of the high class hooker, with putative elegance and extraordinary erotic skills. Mr. Spitzer and his ilk may wish to kid themselves, by spending extra, but they are really just paying for an available body. For the most part, "highly educated women from good families" — or even just moderately educated women from ordinary families —have skills that allow them to support themselves in what used to be called "honest" ways. (Unskilled women with less education also mostly choose grubby honest minimum wage labor, of course.) I think The Sopranos had a far more realistic view of who most prostitutes and strippers are than a lot of the romantic nonsense I've read lately.

Ms. Youmans does not want people to think she is "a monster." Does anyone think that? I doubt it. She is a dumb kid, who appears to have had no parents to offer help or guidance in life. Her physical beauty has, perhaps, made her life worse than it might have been had she been willing to move out of the expensive apartment and work as a waitress or shopgirl. There are monsters in this story — but they are the pimps (male and female, at Emperor) and the customers.

Further, on this point, the comments of a person claiming to be an "industry insider" writing at Pajamas Media:

None of these girls was coerced into selling her body for money. Most of them came from middle-class backgrounds, and many had been accepted to universities. But they dropped out as soon as they discovered that they could make $20-30,000 a month as an escort.

Then they got addicted to the money and the lifestyle. And then one day, usually between the ages of 25 and 28, once they’d developed that knowing, experienced look that clients instinctively disliked, they found that themselves in a classic bind: they were addicted to high living but could no longer pay for it; they had no marketable skills; and years of late nights and lazy days had left them with no self-discipline. What to do? The really smart ones pulled themselves together and, with the help of a sympathetic client, started some kind of a business. Others married rich, cynical, older men in a sort of paid-wife arrangement. Those were the most common stories. I did not inquire into the fate of the girls who sort of faded away. I did not want to hear about their loneliness and poverty.

So much for the "victimless crime" myth.

#1  So much for the "victimless crime" myth.

I totally disagree. When you can make $20-30,000 a month for providing your "services", you are no victim. These were hardly crack-addicted teenage single mothers; they were successful businesswomen who could "get out at the top" at the time of their choosing.

Let's get real - working as a janitor or taking fast food orders for a few years is far more grueling and demeaning.

#2  Y'know I have no interest in the trials and tribulations or the joys and benefits of being a hooker. If you end up getting rich from it, well, good for you, you probably earned it. If you end up drug addicted or diseased or dead, well, good for you, you probably earned it.

#4  As I point out, sex is legal, giving away money for silly reasons is also legal. What is not legal is to do them in a short time span of each other with a clear cause and effect relationship.

This means that only really uncreative or downright stupid prostitutes and johns ever get busted.

Heck, unless they are this stupid, they aren't even *called* prostitutes, even if they do essentially the same thing.

Most any reasonably intelligent person can sit down and in five minutes figure out how to create a prostitution business that will never be busted, or even suspected of prostitution.

#6  So much for the "victimless crime" myth.

You might as well say everyone who goes into gymnastics, ballet, modeling, pro-football or any other career with a shelf life ending in the early '30s is a crime victim. People make bad choices and fail to invest their income while they have it and then they live with the consequences. I speak from experience.

#8  I've had the pleasure of living where prostitution is legal, and indulged myself on many occasions. When properly controlled and regulated, it can be a remarkably civilized business. In truth, prohibition is the source of nearly all negative aspects of the trade.

Amid Charges of Spitzer Tryst, Embattled Prostitute "Kristen" Expected to Resign
Iowahawk

At a hastily scheduled morning press conference at the headquarters of New York's exclusive Emperors Club prostitution ring, high priced call girl "Kristen" announced that she would temporarily step aside in the wake of charges that she had engaged in sex with New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

"I made a serious mistake and betrayed the trust of my co-workers, my many clients, and my pimps," she said in a quiet voice cracking with emotion. "I will be taking a leave of absence to earn their forgiveness, and redeem myself in the eyes of the entire expensive whore community."

The embattled prostitute did not mention Spitzer by name, and stopped short of offering an official resignation. But longtime sex industry insiders say that it will be difficult for Kristen to return to her post in light of mounting federal wiretap evidence that she had sexually serviced the Governor on at least two occasions.

"It will be hard for her to spin her way out of this," said Destinee Rizzo, editor of the trade journal Executive Concubine."After taking on clients like that, her days as a five diamond, high-roller suite call girl are over. Frankly, with all the press coverage she'll be lucky to get a job as a $5 truck stop lot lizard in Kentucky."

"The big problem now is to keep this incident from threatening the whole expensive whore industry," added Rizzo. . . .

Iowahawk: Come on Democrats, Let's Stop the Cannibalism
. . . So remember: the next time you learn that your opponent's staff is spreading stories about your candidate's involvement with a satanic LSD murder cult, take a deep breath, count to ten, and let it go. Sure, you could probably respond by distributing the well-documented evidence of your opponent's long history of serial necrophilia. Sure, it might temporarily feel good, and maybe it might swing a few million votes. But you have to ask yourself: to what end? Is some cushy 6-figure job in the next presidential administration -- with a probable $5 million-per-year K Street lobbying career waiting on the back end -- really worth losing your dignity and self respect over? . . .

Remember, in the Bible Jesus counsels us to "turn the other cheek." This is sound advice for all Democrats and progressives, even if it comes straight out of the right wing fundies' favorite "science" book. It's time for cooler heads to prevail, and that's why I'm calling for both camps in this squabble to pledge to bring an immediate end to this self-destructive cannibalism. And by "cannibalism" I of course mean figurative cannibalism, because I would never dignify by repeating those lurid charges of actual, literal cannibalism currently being shopped around to the media by your opponent's flaks.

What? You didn't know? Hey, I'm just telling you what I hear.

Home Front: Politix
That's Clinton Loyalty for Ya!
This is what Senator Clinton had to say about the Ferraro last night:

Earlier in the day, Hillary Clinton supporter and fundraiser Geraldine Ferraro gave up her honorary position with Clinton's campaign after she said in an interview last week that Obama would not have made it this far if he were white. Obama said Ferraro's remarks were "ridiculous" and "wrong-headed."

Of Ferraro's comment, Hillary Clinton told her audience: "I certainly do repudiate it and I regret deeply that it was said. Obviously she doesn't speak for the campaign, she doesn't speak for any of my positions, and she has resigned from being a member of my very large finance committee."

"Under the bus, my pretty! You and your little dog, too!"
Geraldine Ferraro serves as a warning to anyone who wants to help a Clinton. Here she was, just another Clinton campaign chick going out there trying to out-identity-politics the black guy. It's obviously a campaign strategy. But as things get to hot and heavy, Clinton dumps her. (Bill Clinton seems one of the few immune to that treatment.)

When Steinem made her actual outrageous remarks about John McCain a few weeks ago, Hillary had a little more respect for Gloria than she did Ferraro. But I guess that's reason and loyalty with the Clintons. It's a vast right-wing conspiracy when your husband actually abuses power. When a dedicated surrogate of yours does her job, playing the silly identity-politics game you all play, you cast her aside like a reckless and expendable young professor.

Moonbat fratricide: Olbermann calls Hillary a "Republican"
Huffasnuffaluffagus Post

Tonight, as promised, Keith Olbermann attacked Senator Hillary Clinton in a ten-minute "Special Comment," . . . in which he accused her of "campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican." . . . Olbermann chose to frame his comment in terms of bad choices on the part of Senator Clinton, stopping short of calling her inherently racist, instead casting the matter in terms of her receiving bad advice from the "tone deaf" and "arrogant" members of her campaign ("they are killing your chances of becoming president...[and] slowly killing the chances for any democrat to become president"). . . . "Do you not see, Senator?" Olbermann asked. "Senator Clinton, this is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact."

If it's a (figurative, of course) suicide pact, I say let's insist on strict enforcement of its terms by specific performance.

India-Pakistan
The Numbers Mount
There were 56 acts of suicide terrorism in Pakistan during 2007. Four of these were committed during the first half of 2007 before the Army's commando raid in the Lal Masjid of Islamabad from July 10 to 13, 2007. The remaining 52 were committed between July 13 and December 31, 2007.

As against this, there have already been 17 acts of suicide terrorism between January 1, 2008, and March 11, 2008. Ten of these were committed before the elections on February 18,2008, and the remaining seven after the elections. There were three in January, nine in February and five till March 11,2008.

Area-wise comparative figures are given below (figures within brackets indicate the number of suicide attacks till March 11 this year )
Federally-Administered Tribal Areas: 23 ( 4 )
North-West Frontier Province: 21 ( 7 )
Punjab: 9 ( 6)
Balochistan: 2 ( Nil )
Sindh: 1 ( Nil )
Of the seven attacks in the NWFP this year, three were in the Swat Valley (Mingora), two in Peshawar and one each in Charsaddha and Darra Adam Khel. Of the six in Punjab, four were in Lahore and two in Rawalpindi. Of the four in FATA, two were in North Waziristan where according to the US, the sanctuaries of Al Qaeda, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and other pro-Al Qaeda groups are located, one in the Kurram Agency where there have been frequent Shia-Sunni clashes and one in the Bajaur Agency where it is suspected that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the No.2 of Al Qaeda, has taken shelter. So far this year, there has been no act of suicide terrorism in South Waziristan, where the headquarters of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan headed by Baitullah Mehsud is located. In 2007, there were 20 attacks of suicide terrorism by the Mehsuds in South Waziristan.

According to reliable Pakistani police sources, the needle of suspicion points as follows:

Al Qaeda or the IMU or the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan--the two attacks in North Waziristan and one in Bajaur The Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohamadi of Maulana Fazlullah--the three attacks in Swat. The Jaish-e-Mohammad, the anti-Shia Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and the Tehrik-e-Taliban-- The six in Punjab, two in Peshawar and one each in Charsaddha, Darra Adam Khel and Kurram. There have already been 266 fatalities -- combatants as well as non-combatants -- till March 11, 2008, as against 636 the whole of last year.

It is learnt that the Lahore office of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which was attacked on March 11, 2008, and severely damaged, houses, inter alia, a Joint Interrogation Centre to interrogate arrested terrorist suspects. It also has the office of a top secret counter-terrorism investigation division trained in the US. The private advertising agency of Model Town, Lahore, which was attacked the same day, is located close to the office of a Special Counter-Terrorism Investigation Unit of the Punjab Police. The police suspect that the suicide terrorist, must have found it difficult to penetrate this office because of its strong physical security, and must therefore have caused the explosion in the nearby office of the advertising agency, hoping that the blast would also damage the office of the police unit. It did not.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hezbollah after Mughniyeh
Yehudit Barsky
The recent killing of Imad Fayez Mughniyeh will not preclude Hezbollah from striking again -- and, judging from past experience, the Lebanese-based terrorist organization will eye Diaspora, as well as Israeli, targets.

For many of his victims around the world, the mid-February car-bomb assassination of Imad Fayez Mughniyeh -- one of the world’s most wanted terrorists for two decades -- has the ring of true justice. At least in the short term, the killing of Mughniyeh will have a deterrent effect and hamper Hezbollah’s capability to carry out a revenge attack.

It will not, however, preclude Hezbollah from planning a future strike -- and, judging from past experience, the Lebanese-based terrorist organization will eye not only Israeli targets for retaliation, but Diaspora Jewish ones as well.

Mughniyeh, the second highest official in the Islamic extremist group and seen as a possible successor to Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, showed no boundaries of brutality or location. He was on the FBI's Most Wanted list for the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847 and murder of one of its passengers, U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem. The FBI posted a $25 million reward for Mughniyeh's capture.

Earlier in his terrorist career, Mughniyeh joined Fatah’s Force 17, the personal security apparatus of Yasser Arafat. Mughniyeh was one of a number of young Shia Muslims recruited to Force 17 and initially trained by Fatah.

Mughniyeh went on to become a founding member of Hezbollah and was placed in charge of its Special Security Apparatus, also known as the Islamic Jihad Council, whose members were trained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards. He ultimately became chief of the security apparatus and headed Hezbollah’s foreign operations, overseeing terror activities worldwide. Both the Islamic Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security facilitated Mughniyeh’s international operations.

The 1983 massive car bombings of the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed more than 300, and the kidnappings and murders of Westerners in Lebanon, including CIA station chief William Buckley and USMC Lt. Col. William Higgins, as well as members of the Lebanese Jewish community, all are accredited to Mughniyeh.

He gained international notoriety for his involvement, together with Iran, in the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy, and the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center, both in Buenos Aires. The official findings of the Argentinean investigation of the AMIA attack revealed that it was planned and executed by Iran and Hezbollah. As a result, Interpol, at the request of Argentina, issued an arrest warrant for Mughniyeh and five Iranian officials.

Serving as Hezbollah’s nexus to other terrorist organizations, Mughniyeh provided vital assistance and training for Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, strengthening the ties of those terror organizations to both Hezbollah and Iran. He also maintained ties with Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri of al-Qaida by providing explosives training for al-Qaida operatives.

Following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Mughniyeh was believed to have been instrumental in having organized the escape of up to 50 senior members of al-Qaida's leadership from Afghanistan to Lebanon and facilitated the escape of dozens of other al-Qaida operatives to Iran. Over the last several years, Mughniyeh further expanded Hezbollah’s influence and was reported to be working with Iran to train Moktada Al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army in Iraq.

Mughniyeh’s most recent activities included his key role in the construction of Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in southern Lebanon from 2000 to 2006. With Iran’s aid, he oversaw the efforts that transformed Hezbollah into an organization with military-level capabilities. Mughniyeh also is considered responsible for the kidnapping of Israeli reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, and he directed Hezbollah fighting against Israeli forces during the 2006 Lebanon war.

What comes next in the post-Mughniyeh era of Hezbollah?

Nasrallah immediately blamed Israel for Mughniyeh’s February 13 assassination in Damascus and declared that Hezbollah was prepared to immediately retaliate “anywhere” against Israeli targets worldwide. For example, the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed several weeks after Israel’s assassination of then-Hezbollah leader Abbas Musawi. Two years later, there was a bomb attack on the AMIA building, the headquarters of Argentina's Jewish community. After Mughniyeh’s assassination, Israel issued security alerts to its embassies and an advisory to Israeli citizens abroad to be alert for possible abduction attempts.

Mughniyeh clearly left his imprint not just on Hezbollah, but on other terrorist organizations. Due to his contacts with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, those organizations may be called upon by Hezbollah to expand their own terrorist activities against Israel. Other organizations that received assistance from Hezbollah expressed solidarity with Hezbollah after Mughniyeh’s assassination and may decide to engage in their own violent actions or may be called upon by Hezbollah for assistance.

Clearly, Hezbollah will not let Mughniyeh’s assassination pass without attempting a display of its own capability for revenge. The question is not if, but where and when.
