EL CERRITO, Calif. - A naked man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon after telling police he had a screwdriver in his buttocks.
Police say John Sheehan was lying on a tree stump fondling himself beside a nature path near the El Cerrito Bay Area Rapid Transit station Thursday. Sheehan was initially arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure. But when asked if he was carrying anything police should know about, Sheehan mentioned the tool. Officers drew their weapons and firefighters were called to the scene, but Sheehan removed a six-inch metal awl wrapped in black electrical tape without incident.
From between his buttocks? Or... ummm... I don't wanna know.

Passers-by called officers about 7:50 a.m. to report that a naked man was lying on a tree stump beside the Ohlone Greenway path, exposing himself and masturbating.
Police saw 33-year-old John Sheehan and arrested him on suspicion of indecent exposure.
Officers led him to the nearest street, the 2000 block of Kearney Avenue. Before putting Sheehan in the back of his car, Sgt. Paul Keith asked him if he had anything on him that police should know about.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Police are looking for a robber who held up a noodle bar in western Japan then paid for his meal and waited for his change before making off.
The young man ate a bowl of "ramen" noodles and a side order of fried chicken at a restaurant in the city of Osaka on Wednesday then produced a knife and forced a waitress to hand over takings of 46,000 yen ($393), the Sports Nippon newspaper said.
When the woman demanded he pay for his meal, the robber gave her 1,000 yen and waited for his 100 yen change before running away, the paper said.
Two Buffalo police officers responding to a complaint about a domestic dispute at an East Side home Wednesday morning got into a fistfight while trying to control the situation, The Buffalo News has learned. Officers Cariol J. Horne and Greg M. Kwiatkowski - both on duty and in uniform - threw punches at each other on the driveway of a home on Walden Avenue near Sumner Place, according to police and witnesses. About seven citizens watched the two officers fight. During the scuffle, Horne jumped on Kwiatkowski's back, and Kwiatkowski punched her in the face, police said. Witnesses said Kwiatkowski's face was swollen and red.
The fight was reportedly sparked when Horne tried to prevent Kwiatkowski from making an arrest, police sources say. Other witnesses say Kwiatkowski and a second officer were using excessive force to arrest a man by wrestling with him on the ground and beating him repeatedly with a police baton, and Horne was trying to stop him. "There were fisticuffs exchanged," Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson said. "She reportedly jumped on his back and she got punched in the face . . . The officers were placed on an administrative leave with pay, and we will take the appropriate disciplinary actions against anyone determined to have acted inappropriately."

The thin blue line just got a whole lot thinner.
That's very moving, a tad sad even.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Some of the letters are comical (a man asking God to let him win the lottery, twice), others are heartbreaking (a distraught teen asking forgiveness for an abortion, an unwed mother pleading with God to make the baby's father marry her). The letters about 300 in all, sent to a New Jersey minister ended up dumped in the ocean, most of them unopened.
The minister died two years ago at 79. How the letters, some dating to 1973, wound up bobbing in the surf is a mystery.
"There are hundreds of lives here, a lot of struggle, washed up on the beach," said Bill Lacovara, a Ventnor insurance adjuster who was fishing last month with his son when he spotted a flowered plastic shopping bag and waded out to retrieve it. "This is just a hint of what really happens. How many letters like this all over the world aren't being opened or answered?"
Many of the letters were addressed to the Rev. Grady Cooper, though many more simply said "Altar." According to the text of several of them, they were intended to be placed on a church's altar and prayed over by the minister, the congregation or both.
Some were neatly written in script on white-lined paper, others in a feverish scrawl on tattered scraps of parchment or note cards. Many were crinkled from being in the water and then dried out after Lacovara fished them out of the sea.
A dog-eared business card inside one of the letters identified Cooper as associate pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Jersey City. A woman who answered the phone at the church office confirmed Cooper once was a minister there, and had died nearly two years ago. The current pastor did not return several calls from The Associated Press over the past few days.
Other documents in the bag, including bank statements and canceled checks, also listed Cooper's name and an address for him in Jersey City. A death certificate issued in 2004 for a Grady Cooper lists the same address as those on the bank documents and some of the letters.
His wife, Frances, whose name also showed up on some of the letters at the same address, died in 2000, according to Hudson County records.
No one answered the door last week at the address where Cooper once lived, and a neighbor said he did not recall anyone by that name. Attempts to locate Cooper's relatives were unsuccessful.
Lacovara speculated that someone cleaning out Cooper's home found the letters and threw them on the beach in Atlantic City, about 100 miles from Jersey City. "I guess rather than just throw them in the garbage, maybe they thought they'd set them out to sea to bless these people," he said. "So they made a trip to Atlantic City, maybe went to a casino, and put the letters in the water."
The letters, wrapped in several smaller brown paper bags inside the larger plastic bag, did not appear to have been in the water too long, Lacovara said, though about half were too badly damaged to be legible.
He opened a few with his son, Rocky, on the beach. The first few were humorous. "I'm still praying to hit the lottery twice: first the $50,000," one man wrote. "Than after some changes have taken place let me hit the millionaire."
Another asked God to make a certain someone "leave me alone and stay off my back," while still another asks God to calm a woman who "call the Internal Revenue on me." One woman complained that her husband always talks about sex, and another writer anonymously dropped a dime to God on someone cheating on his wife, complete with dates, times and locations.
But those, Lacovara soon found, were the exception.
Many more were written by anguished spouses, children or widows, pouring out their hearts to God, asking for help with relatives who were using drugs, gambling or cheating on them. One man wrote from prison, saying he was innocent and wanted to be back home with his family. A woman wrote that her boyfriend was now closing the door to her daughter's bedroom each night when it used to stay open, and wondered why.
A teenager poured out her heart on yellow-lined paper in the curlicue pencil handwriting of a schoolgirl, begging God to forgive her and asking for a second chance. "Lord, I know that I have had an abortion and I killed one of your angels," she wrote. "There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about the mistake I made."
One unwed mother wrote that her baby was due in four weeks, and asked God to make the father fall in love with her and marry her so the child would have a father.
Lacovara said he is sad that most of the writers never had their letters read. But he hopes to change that soon: He is putting the collection up for sale on eBay. I don't think the people imagined that while writing those letters...

The local bishop should take charge. He should volunteer to take the letters, and he and the priests in his diocese should have a quiet ceremony. Then they should divide the letters and read each one, offering an appropriate prayer. Then and only then should they be destroyed.

OCEANA COUNTY -- It wasn't terrorists or anarchists who stole dangerous explosives out of an asparagus field in Oceana County's Ferry Township, police said. It was, to stretch the definition, fishermen.
Two 22-year-old men, both from Ferry, are accused of taking the eight 150-gram Pentalite seismic charges and nine electric cap detonators to "blow up fish," according to authorities.
State Police Detective Sgt. Andrew Fias, of the Hart post, said Thursday the two suspects arrested Wednesday have not yet been charged, but have been questioned about their intentions. The explosives have since been turned over to authorities. "They said they took them out of curiosity," Fias said. "They were going to blow up fish," he said. "There was no threat to any structures. Their intention was not to do any harm to anyone. People can rest easy."
An explosion rocked Kuwait's smallest oil refinery on Saturday, sparking a fire that shut the facility, the Kuwait National Petroleum Company said. No injuries were reported.
Investigators were looking into the cause of the blast at the Shuaiba installation south of Kuwait city, but terrorism was not suspected, said Mohammad al-Ajami, a company spokesman. And why not? Refineries do explode for non-terrorist reasons, but they have to be prime terrorist targets too, so why wouldn't you at least suspect terrorists?
More than 800 people were evacuated and the fire burned for three hours before firefighters extinguished it, he said.
Shuaiba is the smallest of Kuwait's three oil refineries, with a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day. Al-Ajami said the explosion occurred in the refinery's heavy oil unit, which had a capacity of 25,000 barrels per day.
Al-Ajami said parts of the refinery with a capacity of some 120,000 barrels per day remained operational, and the refinery would be "back to normal," except for the heavy oil unit, in about two days. It was unclear if the refined oil was for domestic consumption or overseas sale.
Kuwait has three refineries all in the emirate's oil-rich southern region which have a combined refining capacity of 915,000 barrels per day. The small state on the western shore of the Persian Gulf pumps around 2.6 million barrels of oil per day.
Hot pants and miniskirts will soon be legal in South Korea.
The country is in the final stages of revising an indecency law that prohibits people from wearing revealing outfits and was once enforced by ruler-wielding police during authoritarian governments in the 1970s, officials said.
"The law for excessive exposure does not match our current society," said Kim Jae-kwang, an official with the Korea Legislation Research Institute.
Under authoritarian rule, police could arrest or fine women for their fashion choices. They also took scissors to men whose hair they felt was too long and tossed people in jail for unauthorized dancing.
The rules stayed on the books as South Korea moved to an open democracy in the late 1980s, but were no longer enforced.
Now miniskirts are about as common as traffic jams in the capital of Seoul and police have long given up on measuring the distance from knees to hemlines.

Let me tell you something: South Korea hasn't been enforcing those laws for a long time. There are a hell of a lot of good-looking women in this country and an awful lot of the younger ones like those denim miniskirts that extend about six inches down from their crotch. I strongly suspect that the South Koreans haven't got a clue about burkas and would tell any Muzzies proposing it to take a flying leap at a cement mixer.

One very simple solution; Ban the hijab, the niqab and the burqa. Period. Not allowed, anywhere. Not even inside a mosque. No ability to perpetuate extreme Islam. And make no mistake about it; Any brand of Islam that requires women to wear such raiment is an extreme form. All such attire is confirmation of how woman is to blame for male sexual desire and an extension of fundamentalist doctrine that promotes Abject Gender Apartheid. Such a prohibition will cause the more hidebound Islamists to leave for other parts. This is the first big step in making Western countries unfriendly to Islam.
But Monash University feminism lecturer Karen Green argues that the headscarf actually sexualises women by suggesting men and women cannot interact without the cloth barrier preventing men from succumbing to their desires. Muslim women are wrong if they think that the headscarf prevents them from being treated as sex objects, Dr Green wrote in a 2004 essay. In fact it confirms that that is their social status.
Therefore, such attire should be banned. It is an extension of male domination in Islam and an unacceptable component of free society.
Despite Mr Zreikas protestations, it is clear that the Lakemba mosque, which regularly hosts 4000 worshippers and is controlled by his association, may be creating an enclave.
Exactly how many of those 4,000 worshipers have called for al-Hilalis dismissal or censure?
While most Muslims disagree with these extreme views, authorities are worried about the lack of drive within the Islamic community to stop such teachings.

Bosnian Muradif Hasanbegovic, 36, was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery in the Karlau prison, near Graz. He escaped from the workshop where he helped package and post parts for lampposts. As the president's motorcade drove past a school bus, the children waved. President Bush waved back at them. The school bus driver wasn't waving, though she was using her hand. She allegedly gave Bush the finger.

Bush's response says something - imagine Kerry or Clinton in his place (or for that matter, DeLay or Hastert): would they just have turned to their seatmate and said "That one's not a fan"? It's little stories like this (& off-the-record visits with wounded vets etc.) that make his on-the-record statements more credible to me (and I still don't entirely trust them - it's politics).
A radio talk show host was fired Friday after he made a derogatory comment about the weight and sexuality of the Green-Rainbow party candidate running for Massachusetts governor. WRKO-AM pulled host John DePetro from the air after he made the comments Thursday. It announced Friday that he had been fired.
"In the context of what he said and the tone with which he said it, the comments were completely inappropriate, derogatory and will not be tolerated," said Jason Wolfe, the vice president of AM programming and operations for station owner Entercom Boston.
DePetro did not immediately return an e-mailed request for comment Friday, however, he told The Boston Globe in a story posted Friday on its Web site that he was "stunned" that he had been fired. He said he had called the candidate, Grace Ross, to apologize for calling her a "fat lesbian."
"Sorry I called you a fat lesbian, bitch."
The host, who calls himself the "Independent Man," said he made the remark because he was exasperated that Ross and independent candidate Christy Mihos were eating up time during a debate earlier in the week that included Republican candidate Kerry Healey and Democrat Deval Patrick. He said it was then that he told listeners he wished someone would "tell the fat lesbian to shut up."

Further - Here's the 'official' Grace Ross website (warning - do not click on this site whilst eating or drinking anything), and from this part of the website, she is referred to thusly: She is a white lesbian living in Worcester.
DePetro has referred to her as a lesbian many, many times on air in recent months, almost always by prefacing it with 'as she refers to herself on her website'.
Maybe I'm just an asshole or something, but I don't see how this is a firing offense, given his past mentions of her pelt-licking tendencies. I guess it was the combo 'fat lesbian'?

The "fat lesbian" remarks harks back to a joke by standup comic Greg Girardo, when he commented on the Inmternational Olympic Committee cancelling womens' softball.

A 16-year-old Oro Valley boy was arrested Friday in connection with two containers of acid that exploded at Foothills Mall. That's near Tucson, BTW
Authorities arrested the teen at his school, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. She would not say what school he attends.
The teen is being held at the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center on one count of arson and one count of misconduct involving weapons, both felony charges, Barkman said. The Star is not naming the suspect because he is a Moslem juvenile.
Emergency personnel evacuated two stores, a Barnes and Noble and a Famous Footwear, on the south side of the mall after patrons heard a loud noise coming from an outdoor trash can Thursday night. The stores were evacuated for about three hours. The incident was similar to one that occurred last Saturday inside the Northwest Side mall.
Sgt. Chris Rogers, a technician with the Pima County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, said the explosions resulted from substances mixed in a plastic bottle causing a chemical reaction that ruptured the container. While the explosions were not powerful, the corrosive properties of the substances can cause chemical burns, respiratory problems or hearing problems, Rogers said. It's 95% likely this is some deranged asshole who's never heard of the Koran. But just in case...

So let "Uncle Buck" tell you if you have teenage boys hiding muriatic acid, aluminum foil. and 2 liter plastic soda bottles they are up to no good. I doubt many rantburgers are teenagers wanting to learn how to blow up mail boxes. Consider this a heads up for parental units. BTW the report sounds like a shot gun going off. You (women lawyers) are professionals. You should be dressed as requisite for the lawyers. We (the judges) cannot identify women lawyers wearing veils and doubt that veiled lawyers appear in court several times seeking adjournments for other lawyers cases, Justice Pervaiz told a veiled lawyer, Raees Anjum, who was seeking adjournment of a case. The court could barely hear Ms Anjums name when she was asked to make her presence for a case she was seeking an adjournment for. Ms Anjum had to repeat her name several times because of her veil and this led to the chief justices observation that women lawyers should not wear veils in courtrooms.
I was embarrassed when the chief justice asked me not to wear a veil in the courtroom, Ms Anjum told Daily Times. I feel more confident in my hijab (veil). I am a progressive Muslim woman who has the courage to follow her faith while living and working in this conservative society.... hijab reflects a womans modesty, she said.

Kwiatkowski - both on duty and in uniform - threw punches at each other on the driveway of a home on Walden Avenue near Sumner Place, according to police and witnesses. About seven citizens watched the two officers fight. During the scuffle, Horne jumped on Kwiatkowski's back, and Kwiatkowski punched her in the face, police said. Witnesses said Kwiatkowski's face was swollen and red. 
A radio talk show host was fired Friday after he made a derogatory comment about the weight and sexuality of the Green-Rainbow party candidate running for Massachusetts governor. WRKO-AM pulled host John DePetro from the air after he made the comments Thursday. It announced Friday that he had been fired.
